How To Use A Drawing Tablet with Inkscape

- Опубліковано 26 лип 2024
- In this tutorial I’ll be demonstrating how to use a drawing tablet in Inkscape. The setup should be quick and seamless if you’re a Windows 10 user and you’re using a Wacom device.
Drawing tablets allow you to create freehand digital art the same way you would with a pencil and paper. They work very similar to how a mouse or touch pad works. The tablet portion of the device corresponds with your screen, and the pen works like a mouse. Hovering your pen over the tablet will allow you to move the cursor around on your screen the same way you would with a mouse. Drawing on the tablet with your pen registers on your computer screen the same way clicking and dragging with your mouse would.

Believe it or not, for years I’ve been watching your video’s. Guess what I bought yesterday. This is almost a scary coincidence 😊 This afternoon it’s going to be delivered. Right video at the right time. Thanks Nick!
I just got a Surface Studio 2, just downloaded Inkscape for the first time and just started watching your tutorials. This is the exact video I needed to see. Thanks!
Oh, just for Wacom. Still, good to know I can use my pen instead of the mouse for outline work.
You hit another out of the box - Nick! I've ad a lowend wacom for years but never really used it. Probably use it more now. Thanks!
You never disappoint me! I ❤️ working with Inkscape.
Thank you for this quick tour to use Wacom and Inkscape. Also great to see how you up your videos on UA-cam which I really enjoy!
Thank you! I use a XP-Pen Deco 01 drawing tablet and the pencil tool for drawing. When I use the pencil or calligraphy tools though, the pen is a must.
For some projects, if you use detailed sketches for instance, it is probably better to use the bezier tool, but you can sketch with the calligraphy tool quite nicely too.
Nick is a Human he has hands ;D
@Heinrich Ackermann That`s the Question hehe :D

That is cgi. Those are fake hands
Jk
No I thought he is angle came down from heaven
i want a face reveal @logosbynick
Great Nick.
The another pen's button i used for pan navigation
Really useful.
Good tip about the multiple monitor filtering. Thanks!
Hey Nick, I had tip feel cranked way up because I don't know what I'm doing with this thing. Anyway I tried dropping way down like you had it and now it's working way better. Saving me time and grief as usual. Thanks a million!
Thank you! I recently bought an entry-level Wacom tablet, and I want to teach myself Inkscape. I was wondering if/how those two intersect, and this video answers that question. I have a lot to learn in both arenas, and I'm thankful to have found your channel.
I've been waiting for this
Thank you, my friend. Verry usefull and usefull, as all your tutorial allways are.
Very good demonstrations on all of this guy's videos.
Nice post.
Intuos installs itself on MacOS as well. I usually map the button you left disabled on right click. I find it useful to reach contextual menus in Gimp.
great channel, keep this forever
Thank you!
Set the lower pen button to middle mouse click. Use it to pan the image in any direction by pressing the button, touch the pen to your tablet and move the pen. Release the button when finished.
Exelent, like allways.
I use Wacom One (old, not newest), its cheap and realy GOOD for its price.
Hi nick, can you teach us how to use symmetry tool (just like procreate) in easy ways?
More inkscape drawing tablet videos!
Good video. But this part of "making a Wacom work is really easy". Please make another video on how we could adjust the pen inside the Inkscape preferences. Like the stroke width with pressure of the pen etc.
Please use your preferred setup so those who are not experienced with tablet use and setups could have a foundation to start on...
Hello, dear Logo... upsiie I ment Nick. :) I use the "lowest Button" always as a "Right Mouse Button". It opens the Context-Menu, and can help with the "Selection/Object"-specific Tasks. On my Drawing-Tablet, I have alot of "MacroKeys", but no "Ctlr/Shift/Alt/AltGr". In InkScape I would alternatively use the "unset-Button" for the "Panning/QuickSelection" (Space-Bar). I really enjoy Your lessons and your Workflow. Did You ever heard of XAML-Paths? XAML is the descriptive Language of WindowsUI and can reuse "SVG"-like Syntax for Path-XML. So You giving me a good understanding of SVG and InkScape. thx and c.u.
EDIT: After I saw another Tutorial, I recommend to use the "SpaceBar" on the Pen´s lower Button. It will help with "Stamping duplicates" also. ;)
I'm curious on what system specification you have.
I just opened Inkscape to remix an icon to look like my system's theme and I got this recommended to me.
GOOGLE IS ALWAYS LISTENING.
Thanks from the video. Should you talk about pixel art on Inkscape?
I'm trying inkscape, found your videos and I realy have to say that you save me! I also use a tablet and/or mouse but I have this problem on inkscape: If I open it with my mouse then I'm not able to use Inkscape with the table and vise versa. Is there some setting to fix it?
Thanks again for your tutorials!
Finally!!!
What version of inkscape are you using? I downloaded the 1.0 for Windows and it's default is slightly different to the one you use here, I was just wondering which (if any) settings you changed from the default to get your current layout. Thanks!
Thanks I have graphic tablet but i didnt know which tool should I use
Thanks! I love your tutorials. Will you be doing any tablet specific ones with inkscape/gimp?
I don't have any tablet-specific tutorials lined up. I don't use it often to be honest. I just wanted to make this video to demonstrate what it is and how it works.
@@LogosByNick Long time viewer here, I've taken your class, and have become proficient in inkscape. Just got a surface 7 pro to draw. Not what I expected, but what ever is? Would like if you could go over tablets in inkscape. I'm sure I'll get it, but you make things easier. Thanks
Im the maping settings you should check "force proportions"
Thanks. Do you know how to set the zoom function of the pen tablet by holding down the keyboard Ctrl button and the pen button (for example, as implemented in GIMP or KRITA or BLENDER)? In version 1.0.1 (3bc2e813f5, 2020-09-07), these actions give the canvas rotation and only, and this is sad. Maybe there is some way to change the rotation of the canvas and zoom? I really miss zooming with a pen in INKSCAPE :) Ubunu Studio 20.10, WACOM CTL-472.
More logo tutorials!
Is there a way to pan along and around the canvas using a mapped button and the tablet pen..? Or does it always need a mouse to do so?
Cool
I love my 7+ year old wacom tablet. I use second button for right click.
Only thing I don't like is, I'm right handed, but I'm a left handed writer, and I need that left hand for keyboard controls lol.
How do I map one of the pen button's to the inkscape eraser tool?
If I have learned anything about wacom pens is that they love cpu cache more than cpu clock speed.
Are there any touch screen laptops that I can use inkscape on?
Nick... I am using affinity suite but I'm switching for an open source software (and linux). Are your courses updated to be done with new (1.0) Inkscape or there are not so many differences? + I know that there is a scribus, but... Is there any publishing (catalogues / packaging) worthy app for linux? It seems that nor adobe, nor affinity or Corel is going to make their ports for open source OS :D
Sometime in the coming weeks, I want to start learning to use Inkscape to make a comic. Some people have expressed "why would you do that" but the more I'm seeing, the more possible it becomes.
When my strokes cross over in calligraphy mode, the intersections subtract from it. Any idea what i may have turned on that shouldn't be on?
Top right of the Fill panel there are 2 icons. Click on the one furthest right, and this will fill in the gap you see in the intersections.
@@LususSaule yes . i'm such a duffus. Forgot about them, i have a very old tablet and i thought it may be a problem with that. Thanks.
one thing i do notice is that there is quite a big cursor offset between my pen and where the application thinks i'm drawing while using my wacom cintiq 16 (yes both screens my pc and the tablet use the same resolution) and i don't have the cursor offset when i'm using programs like gimp or photoshop.. so my question would be how can i fix this ? i also don't see the tablet as a input device in inkscape
Hey I've just downloaded inkscape and was wondering if you had/knew about some materials to get started with the program, blender for example has a series for beginners on their youtube channel, that sort of stuff
Nick actually has an Inkscape master course for $17 on his website and a Inkscape beginner playlist on his channel.
EDIT: Solved it.
Hey Nick, I have a problem: Several shortcuts doesn't work for me when using the pen, for instance shift + mouseclick (when you have to select multiple objects) and ctrl+shift+drag (when you have to do a perfect circle and have selected the circle tool). It works when I use the mousepad, but not the pen.
Do you have any tips?
Edit: The solution is to go into 'Edit -> Input devices' and select the input to "Tablet"
what version inkscape u use im confused at new version
Is it good for portrait sketch?
Hi dear Nick! Just to say seems your pressure sensitivity seems to be off here, which is sad since this functionality is actually the best within inkscape.
U can re-enable by tweaking input devices near preferences in inkscape itself.. cheers and thanks for such good and consistent contents~
My pressure sensitivity dosen't work. My XP pen Is detected like a system aggregated pointer and not a graphic tablet. This so sad because I'm a freehand artist. Do you know some tricks to solve this issues ?
@@sarak5884 i remember now. Turn off windows ink pen feature since u only would use it on native windows stuff, u can turn it off and it should work in inkscape and still in others like PS Illustr
Hai nick can u please make a crash course about inkscape video, we need to understand the tool, how it work, how to use etc, especially in new inkscape. at least for a begginer, 4 hours course or more I think it will be enough😂
Big thanks from ur fans an I love all ur content
How do I zoom when using tablet ? Can I use drag to zoom like with ctrl+space in photoshop ?
You could program that into one of the buttons of the pen/tablet. Or press + and - on the keyboard.
Where did the music in the end go?
What about pen pressure?? Does Inkscape handle that?
Excuse me, I have a problem with inkscape 1.0 that is so stuck and I can't fix it
my interface direction is inversed (its from right to left now), I've tried reinstalling tons of time and still, tried deleting the prefrences file in user folder and still. I just gave up on this
Do you have anyideas?
I am using old laptop that runs i3 processor 2nd gen with 8gb ram ..I hope this is sufficient to install Inkscape and learn doing illustration ..also I am planning to buy drawing pad (Xpen deco 1 v2) any suggestions ?
Hi Nick, how about adding subtitles? Among all inkscape channels you are the best, so please add subtitles (at least in Russian). I think that all Russian-speaking users will be happy with such a gift ;)
Is it pressure-sensitive?
I'm new to Inkscape. I am using a Wacom Intuos 4. In Inkscape my cursor or where I select is a few inches offset to the right on screen. Any help would be appreciated
Trying checking the tablet settings to see if there's something that can be tweaked.
I challenge you to make a video about how you work as a freelance graphic designer ( The sites you work with and some experiences you had with your clients).
is there any way to use my ipad pro as Drawing Tablet for PC ?
Try to search an app for "graphic tablet pc input" pressure might not work Idk I'm on Android
I'm facing a peculiar problem. Once I start using the tablet within Inkscape, then I'm unable to work with my mouse anymore. I'm able to move the mouse pointer around but when I try to click on tools or menu options it is simply not working at all. The pen works fine again. If I use just the mouse from the beginning things are working fine. It happens soon as I start using the pen. I tried looking in the preferences for any options but couldn't find any. Do you know why this is happening and how to change it?
Pleace Pleace make a Workflow video from sketch to Vektor with Tablet how choose your artboard for icons logos, illustration and specialie for web!!! ooo and you are the only one how i Respekt with Inkscape Art's.
Hi, do you kwow why, when I push the pencil button (ControlZ mode) Inkscape make me the undo+zoom in??? I dont know how erase the zoom operation..
I experience the same 😔
how can i use my mouse on my laptop as well as using my wacom tablet in Inkscape, it used to work but suddenly stopped.
the tablet you linked is out of stock :(
Excuseme may i ask you to this wacom tablet appearing normally in 0.92.4 or 5 input device section but 1.0 is not showing up. its showing system aggregated pointer that all other no anything. is that normal ?
Simbiyot same here it doesn’t appear as an input device anymore
Does the tablet surface appear black? Or does it display the same thing as the monitor?
This is a low-cost drawing tablet so the drawing surface does not act as a monitor; you draw on it but must watch the results in your actual monitor screen. It does take some time getting used to drawing that way. There are graphics digitizers with screens built-in that are much easier to use as you can see directly on the tablet like Wacom Cintiqs but these tend to be expensive (although other manufacturers have started to offer decent alternatives to Cintiqs for affordable prices)
I've been using a couple of Wacom pads for years and years! First of all, I use two monitors of different sizes and the pad works fine across both of them. However, your strange problem reminds me of another wierdo that drives me mad. Since changing to Win10 I cannot get the thing to work properly. I cannot get it to do a right-click from the pen buttons and trying to get the tip sensitivity set up has been impossible. I've tried grabbing new drivers from the Wacom site many times but nothing changes.
I used to use the pad exclusively without any need for a mouse but I now have to keep a mouse within reach to do the right click thing. Most annoying!
I'm a lefty so I draw with a pen and a mouse at the same time lol. You can check the settings in the propreties something with "Win10 pressure style" It might work? better than doing nothing I guess, sorry I couldn't be more precise tho. (I have an old Wacom Intuos)
@@Mioumi I've been through the settings in the Wacom driver and Win10 so many times but nothing seems to make any difference. It's really frustrating.
a doubt, when I install inkscape, a box appears in the middle, and I don't know how to remove it, help :(
Is there a way to use the tablet and the mouse at the same time? When I open inkscape with my tablet, it completely ignores my wireless mouse .v.
Hi Mioumi, my mouse and tablet can work at the same time. If the mouse doesn't work, see if your pen is put on the tablet?
Same problem here, when I ise the tablet, the mouse clicking just got disabled...
@@RM-Niu no I tried that, it seems that the software only can input one of these two :'(
Why don't you put your illustrator channel in the featured channel tab? seems like a nobrainer
Is Inkscape free?
But does it works in Linux?
If anyone is interested there are cheaper tablets from Huion. I use one and I don't have any big problems.
first! more texts effects though. thank you for everything.
Excusme sir,
I'am Ali from Indonesia,
I feel your channel is powerfull for studying InkScape, i hope permission to you sir,
I grab a part of tutorials for my contens soon,
Because in my university, many student can't study with C#relDraw, i use InkScape for vektor drawing, i hope your permission for me,
Thank you,
Ali,
redo. the other button you set to redo.
On windows most of the time you need the drivers. On linux it comes out of the box on most distros
face reveal wanted XD
Should be titled "How to set up a Wacom Tablet on Windows." Didn't really learn anything useful for Inkscape that wasn't already obvious...
This is a graphic tablet, not a drawing tablet.
