I found an extended idea of making a plasma ball. follow the steps of 14:11 and turn the settings to alpha blend, and duplicate the sphere 4 times, shrink them one by one and you will be able to see a transparent type of energy ball

When trying to calculate the right angle for the radial array, you can enter a math formula into the rotation field. For example, put in 360/33 or however many segments you have. It will calculate the right angle so they all fit perfectly.

This is an excellent basis for modelling a Transformer spark, which previously I had prototyped using a lash up of thin meshes shrinkwrapped to a controller sphere and animated by a hellish combination of displacement modifiers and rotating controller empties. Animating the W-vector on procedural materials looks considerably simpler.

Add a cube, scale it so it just encompases the scene. In shading editor, add a material, delete the principled bsdf and add a principled volume, to the volume connector of the output node. Turn the density to between 0.05 and 0.1.
Add a larger cube around this, subdivide it and cut some thin Slats out of the top. Position your point light above this cube and crank up the power. Adds some volumetric effects. Mess about with positions and settings. :)

I took this a few steps further and added a displacement modifier to the sphere, added a particle system to it as well, and then another icosphere with the same materials and modifiers to them as the objects to be used in the render of each particle. I changed the color of the particles slightly to make them look like sparks. So now, I have an unstable plasma ball with sparks flying out of it. With an Empty controlling the texture on the displacement, I can animate it as well and the effect is awesome. Thanks for this tutorial, it gave me a great foundation to do something I was looking at trying but had no clue on how to set up the materials.
Would you give a tutorial if you already don't have it on View Layers and Compositing? It would be great to composite the plasma field with a glow but keep the emitter sharp.

I'm having trouble with the Circle array I tried it in 2.83.4 and in 2.91.0. It goes wonky in both versions. I had to adjust the scale and rotation to get it to work on the first array. The 2nd one was even worse. Yes I did ctrl A on all the objects.

The object's origin point must be at the center cursor. Right click on the object and set origin to cursor. Then go into top view and rotate the empty. At least that's what worked for me.

The shading tab is really difficult for new users to grasp. It would have been nice if you explained everything that was going on inside of the shaders tab, like what you did wrangling the "voronoi" texture mapping object to the noise vector. What the mix node does. What the texture coordinate node is. Why you put what you did. Things like that

Loving your tutorials man, keep them coming! I'm an absolute noob at 3D animation/modelling and been learning blender for the last 3 days mostly just from your tutorials and managed to re-create this scene last night in about 6 hours :) Now that I have the first still render finished I would like to render out the animation for the plasma ball but I'm not sure how to make it a seamless animation, or if it's even possible due to the "randomness" of the voronoi texture. If you or someone else could point me in the right direction to making this a seamless animation, that would be awesome! :D

@@arnav3302 thanks for your reply, I had managed to easily with the first object using the array modifier, when I had come to the second object I had trouble getting it to rotate so it would be inbetween the spaces of the first, I tried rotating the empty axis aswell as the object and it wouldnt line up properly I spent countless hours trying. Probably was a simple solution I overlooked, I ended up placing them all individually, but it's something I can come back to in future to work it out

as a total learner, a missing step makes huge difference, not sure of the advantages or attraction to the maker of the videos being quick, to the learner it's not really a great help. seems to be a thing though

The electric effect of this one helped getting the look, but I can't manage to get it to go from the middle to the outside. All I manage so far is a ball there the tendrils shoot around randomly. Any tips on how to get it to go from middle and to make them weaker the further away they get from the middle?
