Heath is a veritable artist when he's working. The detailed explanations and footage of the different steps in the repair of these really pay off in this video. Sort of like listening to a walking encyclopedia when he speaks. Another great video guys.

Trenton & Heath, great work! I actually had a few Tecovas specific questions. Is it possible to resole them with a synthetic sole something similar to dainite? Also, does JR make a slightly thicker sole that could be used? I’m asking because my ropers get used mostly for dancing and going out, where a leather sole is nice. I’m thinking of getting a “Jackson” square toe which would be used more for causal use and light work. In that case rubber or synthetic would work better for me.

@@nsatoday - I just bought the Jackson Square toe. Love it so far. Would love to know how the danite soles might work on these boots.

I've owned a few pair of western boots and just received a pair for Christmas from my fiancé. I could tell instantly the level of quality, far surpassing their price, but to watch you deconstruct the boot and point out that literally every facet of the boot is 100% traditional (excluding the seat, which is an acceptable swap), makes me even happier. You are also an artist and will be getting boots of mine to resole. (I just don't trust a Chicago cobbler to understand the intricacies of western boot's unique features).

I have to say that in my review of the Tecovas boots I have seen a few videos on resoling them. You by far are the best I have seen when it comes to resoling the boots. Wow! You are an artist! Great video!
I now understand a lot more about cowboy boots than, "Hey! Those are cute!" I never considered just how complex the construction of a boot really was. How you can rip that all apart and resemble it with new parts is simply amazing. I thought when you first begin, 'well, good luck.' Thank you for teaching me something new.

Wow, you sir are an artist! I've always bought Lucchese - absolutely love them, however, now I'm 75 y.o. lady living on social security and can no longer afford them. I've been looking for a good boot without the big price tag. I've been spoiled by having such comfortable good quality boots. I'm sold on Tecova and am ordering a pair. Your video was amazing. I got a pair of the Jacksons in the black color and when I first walked on a wet surface (puddle), I noticed the paint started to kind of wipe off the sole. is this normal for new boots or is it a manufacturer mistake?

That looks like a well made boot! So glad your doing cowboy boots. I’m British but lived in Canada for many years where my love of cowboy boots really took off, my best pair are a pair of vintage Justin’s in black full quill ostrich, beautiful comfortable boots that I found in the thrift store unused for $50! Justin were fantastic as I sent them the serial numbers and they told me they were a custom order back in 1986! What is it with Luchesse and Alden. I always thought them the pinnacle of US mass made brands but they both cheap out in various ways but don’t pass that on to the customer!

ianmedium Wow...great find! I have a pair of ostrich boots as well and love them. Lucchese’s, as a whole, are good boots. We refurbish a lot of them. I’m not sure if they’re trying to keep it very traditional and old school without the cork, but it surprise us. I do think Alden and Lucchese are both very overpriced.

Tecovas are considerably cheaper than Lucchese from what I can tell. Tecova lizards are $300ish and Lucchese are $1000. Alligator $500 vs $5000. Its not really about hipsters and kids but value. I guess if you can afford it grab the best boots possible but id rather just replace when worn out. I will agree Ive had considerable QC issues but I expected it.

This was a great video and you did an excellent job on the resole as usual. But I would of loved to see the upper work, as they needed some serious attention. As those boots had alot of scuffs, discoloration, stains etc. That's one of my favourite parts to watch in these type of videos.

And the stacked leather heels on tecovas boots appear to be made of uniform thickness layers instead of one or more angular upper layers as in most traditional cowboy high heel boots, which give the heel a slight slant instead of an abrupt step. Another reason Cuero's seem to be more traditional. A detail most wouldn't notice or know of. But I've only had the Cuero's for 2 days. I'll see how they hold up.

Maybe 1 1/4". 1st think I do when I get a pair of boots I like the feel of....I take them to the cobbler and have the heals lowered. Then I feel like I'm walking flat and it's better on my spine. Lol
Like those tacovas, they still make the heals a bit high even on there roper style which I way I haven't got a pair yet. Usually I get wedge sole boots now. My back hurts way way less 😁

I have two categories for my shoes - staples and accents.
My staples consist of those shoes which have a longer lifespan and often (but not necessarily) a higher price point. These include Church's, Allen Edmonds, Cheaney, Wolverine, and Crockett & Jones. These shoes are kept in regular rotation and, with minimal care at home and the occasional re-sole, will (and have) lasted me for years.
My accents are those brands that I buy with the intent of occasional wear. Banana Republic, Thursday Boots, Jack Erwin, and Aldo are some of my favorites. These come out every so often and while I do take care of them so far as cleaning and shining, I would have strong reservations investing the money to have them re-soled. For the record, I am not disparaging these brands; the construction of the shoe runs in line with the price point and I would not expect a $135 pair of shoes to last a lifetime of regular wear. That said, I think they are a steal given the fact that I wear them 4 or 5 times a year so they do last for years. (I tend to buy a simple, basic shoe and nothing too 'trendy" - I can wear them for years without fashion regrets)
    One exception is Doc Martens.
I have worn these for years and I have yet to purchase a pair that not only broke in very quickly but also gave me years of consistent wear. For $140 I think that they are a great bargain and one of the few brands that actually look pretty cool if you aren't the most disciplined when it comes to regular shoe shining.

Glad to see this video and get a informed answer from someone who can really tell the quality. Probably going to really consider Tecovas for my next pair of boots.

I got a pair of ropers in calf leather from the "defect" sale they held in Houston and I can't find the defect, they look beautiful, and they are super comfortable. Probably the most comfortable shoes that I own.

I've had good luck with Los Altos. Los Altos has cork. I wear the square toes but they are still cut with a little more style and flare and very comfortable. I'm curious what a professional Cobbler thinks of them.

You do some excellent work. I'm from around the Elk River, Minnesota area where our local boot store closed shop, the Boot Mender, due to health reasons after 40 some years in the trade. Purchased and had boots repaired there. Gonna mis him and his shop. Good to see how other brand of boots n shoes are constructed. I'm in the way of wanting a new pair of western boots. These Tecovas look to be the ticket.

This Tecovas are crafted in León, Guanajuato, Mexico, this is the most important city leather wise in Mexico. Some other great shoe brands are produced there, like Cuadra, Varonte, or Duque Di Galliano.

Really enjoy your videos & reviews of shoes and boots. Just watched and agree with your review of the shoes to NOT buy in 2020 but now I'd like to see your review of some affordable, quality shoes that we should buy, it would be very helpful. I like my Allen Edmonds but have given up on Cole Haan, Florsheim, Johnson & Murphy and especially some of the less expensive shoes which I've had and consider uncomfortable junk.

I remember when I was an undergrad, I saved up for 6 months to buy a pair of Lucchese boots. My buddy and I both saved up some money and bought a pair. they were about $350 a pair. Everyone told us that you buy expensive boots because they don't wear out and you can resole them. Both our Lucchese boots fell apart in short order after getting wet once. Ill never buy another pair of those. I miss the days when Dan Post and J. Chisolm made good boots.

Get yourself some Tecovas! Watch this video a second time! They're well made, and less than over-priced. Check out their website. It's very informative. Why am I trying to sell you on a pair? I ordered a pair of Harpers on 31 July. I put them on for the first time on the morning of 5 August. I'm in love!! They were $275!!

I've looked into Tecovas, and they seem like a great boot, but they don't make a pointed toe- which is pretty much the state of things today. I still have to search for a Tony Lama with a nice point to get that vintage style.

From 18:55 to 19:15 I would have thought that the new heals would have had opposing right and left rear tread. These boots appear to have two left heals to my eye. Maybe the vibrim heal only comes one way. Other than that, they look fantastic! Great work!

I just bought The Jackson and waiting for them to arrive. Happy to hear they are made well. I did just discover a brand that may be better, but they have a limited selection; Chisos might be worth checking out! They are a little more expensive than Tecovas but still less than popular brands like Luchesse. Maybe you can give them a review.

I am considering buying a Tecovas with a Vibram sole, because they grip better on slippery surfaces. I noticed they don’t have a Goodyear Welt. I assumed this was so, because it had something to do with a leather sole vs. a rubber outer sole, and it wasn’t necessary. However, I have non-cowboy boots with rubber soles that are welted. My question is, once my Tecovas with a Vibram sole is worn down, are they just disposable like cheaper boots?
