Gimli exemplified what was best about dwarves while overcoming their least attractive traits. He's definitely one of their greatest.

I would like to think that MOST Dwarves would have stepped up as Gimli did after experiencing what he had with the Fellowship. Maybe having Gloin as a father helped as Gloin spoke kindly, if not highly of Bilbo Baggins to his son.

Gimli has always been so underrated as I feel the movies downplay his achievements. I think Gimli deserves to be recognized as important to the dwarves as any other.

I think Gimli deserves recognition as one of the greatest dwarves because of his open mindedness in accepting Legolas as a true friend and his respectful adoration of Galadriel combined with his acceptance of the ents and Fangorn.

"There is one dwarf in Moria that still draws breath!"
To answer the question at the end of the video, I will take it one step further and say that, not only was Gimli one of the greatest of his race, but one of the greatest characters in Tolkien's legendarium. We only see a sampling of this in the films, and even in the LOTR books. But when one delves deeper into his story, it is clear that he has among the greatest depth of any character chronicled in Middle Earth.

I had the great pleasure of meeting John rhyse-davies at comic con last year in November where he helped me propose to my now fiance. All while I wad wearing a replica of the one ring, passing on another ring and having a small chat about my love for gimlis character. From his bravery to his playful rivalry with legolas, he's easily always been one of my favourite characters from tolkeins works. Getting to meet him and have signatures done along with helping with a special part of my life is a moment ill never forget. Such an amazing man and a dwarf any fellowship wouldn't be complete without

In the beliefs of the Dwarves, their creator Aule (whom they call Mahal) will rebuild the world after it is broken in the Battle of Battles, and the Dwarves will assist him in this act.
With Gimli sailing to the undying lands, it's amazing to think that he would actually SEE Mahal with his own eyes. To the Elves, Valinor were a place to escape the suffering of Middle Earth, and a place to live in peace and happiness.
To Gimli, it was all of that and more; He could live in peace, but still had a mission to look forward to. To him, Valinor was just a glimpse of an Arda that was to come. A template to improve upon.

To answer your question of the day requires an agreed upon definition for “one of the greatest dwarves.” If we define this as excelling in everything exclusively important to dwarves (mining, battle, maintaining the honor of dwarves, etc.), then he is likely one of many. If, however, we define this as making the world around him a better place, then Gimley is absolutely one of very few to attain this level. Having played an instrumental role in ending Sauron would be enough, but he was instrumental in restoring relationships between not only dwarves and elves, but between dwarves and men, he helped carry forward the history of dwarves for other races to remember, and so much more. In this definition, the question is almost silly to ask.

Gimli is the great champion of the Dwarven race. I find that he is the greatest dwarf in Middle-Earth, as he was not a king nor one destined for high leadership. He was a simple warrior and servant in the halls of Erebor. He served constantly......his family, his lord of Erebor, his companions in the Fellowship, his friends, Rohan, Gondor, King Elessar! Gimli's achievements set him apart because he did not chase a crown, riches, or greatness. Instead he pursued only his duty and his conscience, and this lead him to greatness to receive some of the highest honors from all the Free Races in Middle-Earth. A true champion indeed!

The dwarves of the elden times were undoubtedly physically stronger and accomplished than Gimli. The feats attributed to them are so impressive that they seem almost to be fairytale. However, Gimli is not comparable directly to those dwarves; Tolkien wants you to see that Gimli's openness to experience and philial love for the Elves and Men make him an entirely new and unique model for future dwarves to aspire to.
If this general story arc sounds familiar at all, it's probably because it is taken directly from the Bible. In the Old Testament there are people living 900 years, saving all life on arks, destroying their enemies by blowing a horn. But the New Testament brings an entirely new model of how to live; what used to be 'eye for an eye' becomes 'turn the other cheek' and 'love thy neighbor'.
The Numenoreans and Aragorn can be described in almost the exact same way. It's not nearly as on the nose about it's Christianity as a novel like Lion Witch And Wardrobe, but it's definitely there below the surface.
