Favorite scene in LOTR two towers Gimli “you give me your name horse master and I shall you give mine” “I would cut if your head dwarf if it stood a bit higher off the ground” Legolas “YOU WOULD DIE BEFORE YOUR SWORD FELL”
A nice tribute to the character. I love how Gimli comes to represent the Dwarven ideal through the course of his life: enduring as stone against toil, unyielding against temptation and deception, utterly loyal and even uncorrupted by wealth. Thus he fulfilled Galadriel's words of hope: "Your hands shall run with gold, yet over you, gold shall have no dominion."
My favorite piece of lore about Gimli is how respected he was as a warrior. Aragorn mentions to Legolas at the Battle of Helm's Deep (when they were wondering if Gimli had survived his retreat to the Glittering Caves) that he'd never seen anyone wield an axe so skillfully. I'm pretty sure someone in the books (I want to say Gandalf) said that the fact that the dwarves of Erebor allowed Gimli to accompany the Fellowship was a huge gesture (which few of the council of Elrond fully appreciated) showing how seriously they took the mission, as the dwarves knew that war was on the horizon and Gimli was considered to be WAY their best fighter.

Gimli and Legolas, still a better love story than Twilight xD *"Never thought I'd die fighting side by side with an Elf"* _"What about side by side with a friend?"_ *"Aye... I could do that"*
Gimli and Legolas’s friendship is one of the best written in literature. Its just such a beautiful tale of two hostile groups coming together and looking beyond the appearance and what society may deem appropiate. To then find a lifelong friend. Tolkien really nailed that, and Peter Jackson perfectly captured it with the aid of Olando Bloom and John Rhys-Davis
i am glad you did this tribute to gimli. people who only know gimli from the movies miss so much about the true character of this dwarf. the 'faithless is he' quote is also my favorite quote by him from the book. he had such a noble and steadfast character. i admire him.
I like that Gimli wanted to go on the quest to reclaim Erebor even though he was too young, it's appropriate character building for the courageous and loyal dwarf he would become in adulthood.
I have 4 Cats, 2 female and 2 male. 1 male, my first cat, I named him Durin. Then, one of my female cat I named her Dis. :D They like each other like father and daugther. :)

As ever, great scripting and choice of images. Gimli is one of my favorites too, in that he has some rough edges that we get to see beveled off as the story progresses. He has his prejudices, his mistakes and his moments of weakness, yet ultimately overcomes or renounces them. He earns his companions' and the reader's respect.
I love how you take time to point out lessons to be learned from the content of the video. It makes me think on what I've read with greater meaning. Thank you.
Amazing video yoystan and gimli is one of my favorite dwarves who also taught us to forget past grievances and look forward to new friendships in which he made through Legolas and Galadriel! Wow...amazing video. I'm not sure why, but I got emotional at the end with the picture of him, Legolas, and Galadriel in Valinor. Beautiful story of one of my favorite characters in all of literature. Thank you as always!
i read these books when i was about 9 or 10 years old. my mom would have to take my book away at night because i would read it way past my bedtime. ever since then through many years of D&D my love of the dwarf kindred started from gimli. he would have been a true friend to have at your side in any situation. legolas was lucky to have such a friend.
"You waste your time, Aragorn. They had no honor in life and they have none now in death!" *Ghost army saves all of Gondor and demands release from earthly torment* "Bad idea. They're very useful in a tight spot these lads, despite the fact they're dead."
i never did understand why Aragorn didn't keep them around till the black gates had fallen, surely the oath to come to Gondors aid could have extended that far?
They were meant to defend gondor in isildurs time and fled, and were cursed, aragorn's deal was "fulfill that ancient oath and i will lift my ancestor's curse from you" they defended gondor in pelennor fields, oath fulfilled. If he refused to release them from they're oath after the battle. he would of become Aragorn the oathbreaker, essentially cursing them for eternity but with no way to control them, he would of had to fight the hordes of mordor, and an undead traitor army trying to kill him for betraying them to further earthly torment...he gave them a second chance, they took it and made good of their oath to the house of the king. And so aragorn rewarded loyalty and honour borne of a second chance at redemption, with honour and loyalty in kind. In short it was the only just thing to be done.
@@danielhogan6255 except you could say that the threat that mordor possessed was still extremely great hence still under threat, so why then did he not ask them to come to the iron gates?. would it just be due to them thinking that he would not release them after that?.

Another great sunday evening with my pipeweed and Men of the West. Someday I would enjoy a Faramir character history/focus. I've been trying to figure out how to suggest a quote on Tolkien Gateway and I haven't been successful so far, but I feel it as relevant now in our world as any time in ours or Arda when it is said- "I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend." --Faramir in The Two Towers.
Colton LeClaire im a post movie fan and need to read the books but wanted to say how much I love this quote!! it seems appropriate for comment on a video about the life of gimli.
oh and I always have wondered if Tolkien like some "pipeweed" of his own. lol it even exist back then? which the answer must be yes but maybe it was taboo to speak of. I've heard the first forefathers of our country liked them some "pipeweed" as well lol so it must have existed during Tolkien's time lol. wasn't he English tho?
@@seriously..... Yeah! So Tolkien was English and while im sure there was some """pipeweed""" in his time and place, and while I wonder if he had ever tried any, it has been verified that he enjoyed "Old Toby" or pipe tobacco thoroughly. I think he also enjoyed a good ale or brew. I was hooked on the movies for years and never read the books. 4 years ago I found a place to listen to the Phil Dragesh version of the audiobooks online for free. Since then I've listened through LOTR nine times now I think. If sitting down to read isn't your thing I would highly reccomend the audiobooks (you can listen in the car or while doing chores or whatever) its great! Phil Dragesh does what I think is an Immaculate job of getting voices from the films spot on in the audiobooks. Also there's music and sound effects through all of Phil's version. It's really great.
It’s times like these that, as a player and enthusiast of D&D, that I would like to emulate this character in-game. I thank Tolkien and his son for creating, preserving, such a beloved and compelling character.

Luke Skywalker the 2nd the actor did a great job making Gimli so real to us from the books. but I like Sam wise more as the best.
“Bring your pretty face to my axe!!”
Best dwarf ever; strong, loyal, had the best one liners, and showed all of us that the greatest friendships can come from the most unlikely of peoples
Mildly sad that he never had any children that we know of tho......can u imagine little Gimlis running around with short axes!?!?!? Ahh! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣
It would have been neat if the Durin that finally retook Moria was a descendant of Gimli.
Then the warg gets shot by Legolas.
Gimli: BUT THAT ONE COUNTS AS MINE!
A tank on the battlefield and as fiery as any dragon to ever walk Middle earth
One of my favorite lines: "... If Gandalf's head is now sacred let us find one that is right to cleave!"
Have a care, and lay your axe to the right tree.
One of the only quotes I've seen in these comments from the book instead of the movies.
"The words of this wizard stand on their heads. In the language of Orthanc help means ruin and saving means slaying, that is plain. But we did not come here to beg." - Gimli in Isengard
Gimli and Legolas, still a better love story than Twilight xD
*"Never thought I'd die fighting side by side with an Elf"*
_"What about side by side with a friend?"_
*"Aye...
My favorite character. Named my dog after him.
What a cool character
Fuzzy Ewok I know a friend who has 2 dogs named Fili and Kili
I have 4 Cats, 2 female and 2 male. 1 male, my first cat, I named him Durin. Then, one of my female cat I named her Dis. :D
They like each other like father and daugther. :)
Holy sht good name for a dog
Also Fuzzy Ewok is a amazing name 🤣 gotta love the Ewoks
As a die hard Tolkien fan, and reading Lord of the Rings every year. I adore your channel and videos, and I always learn something particularly about the first and second ages of Tolkien’s mythology. Keep doing what your doing!
“Bring your pretty face to my axe!”
Thank you.
Why am i crying? This was just beautiful... you've rekindled my love for the most enduring character and for this entire mythology, THANK YOU!
I’m so glad you finally made a character video for Gimli one of my favorites
Thank you for these man!!! I’m an obsessed fan of Tolkien’s works and these always put me in such a good mood. Very well done. ❤️
Amazing video yoystan and gimli is one of my favorite dwarves who also taught us to forget past grievances and look forward to new friendships in which he made through Legolas and Galadriel! And here is my favorite gimli quote.
“He was twitching, cause he’s got my axe imbedded in his nervous system!”
awesome! One of the most unforgettable characters in the legendarium. Loved this Epic character history feature.
A great warrior, a loyal faithful friend, and a master troll, everything I want in a friend.
Wow...amazing video. I'm not sure why, but I got emotional at the end with the picture of him, Legolas, and Galadriel in Valinor. Beautiful story of one of my favorite characters in all of literature. Thank you as always!
Man can watch these video's all day! very soothing and homely. Gimili's and legolas's brotherhood brings a warm feeling indeed!
can we just appreciate that you end most of your videos with a good lesson? really love it
I aways get really excited when I see a notification with your videos. They are are so well made THANK YOU for the work you put into your videos!
Thank you so much for this, I really love Gimli and dwarves lore.
Gimli, the only Dwarf ever to see the Shores of Valinor. I can think of no Dwarf more worthy of such an honor.
i read these books when i was about 9 or 10 years old. my mom would have to take my book away at night because i would read it way past my bedtime. ever since then through many years of D&D my love of the dwarf kindred started from gimli. he would have been a true friend to have at your side in any situation. legolas was lucky to have such a friend.
"You waste your time, Aragorn. They had no honor in life and they have none now in death!"
*Ghost army saves all of Gondor and demands release from earthly torment*
"Bad idea. They're very useful in a tight spot these lads, despite the fact they're dead."
i never did understand why Aragorn didn't keep them around till the black gates had fallen, surely the oath to come to Gondors aid could have extended that far?
@@blackdeath4eternity Aragorn had given them an Oath to fulfill their deeds from the past, once were all of them alive.
@@analienfromouterspace sorry but that dose not make sense to me could you clarify what you are saying please? thanks.
Opening quote is one of my favorites. Thanks for creating this masterpiece on one of my favorite rings characters.
Moving story, at the end i got a few tears in my eyes. Beautifully telled story. ^_^
Thank you for another amazing video
Ahh! Gimli - great dwarf and true friend - loved that his feelings for Galadriel grew out of her compassion when she spoke the names of the sights in Dwarvish
“I have the eyes of a hawk and the ears of a fox” gets a arrow pointed at him 😂
Another great video Yoystan. I really enjoy your ability to find meaning and lessons in all the topics you cover as it always adds an additional layer of substance to the characters, events, and settings. It adds to the immersion in Tolkien's world that I never had before and for that I thank you.
Tolkien has so much to teach us about life and caring. So much has been lost with time, but looking back brings beauty and hope.
Excellent video as always. Everytime I read or hear about Gimli sailing to the Undying Lands with Legolas it affects me on an emotional level.
Gotta admit, Gimli is my favorite character in Lord of the Rings, and Tolkien’s legendarium in general.
Who’s with me?
Very cool, amazing and interesting video 👍🏻🤘🏻🖤
Gimli my favorite character
Awesome video! Thank you for the history of Gimli
He's my favorite dwarf to bro. Great video. Thank you for keeping tolkens lore alive
Really great video, Gimli is one of if not my favorite character in the Lotr saga. This only made me appreciate his character even more.
Gimli son of Gloin. From the family of Longbeards. Great Video
Fantastic. I never knew that Gimli had such an impact on so much history of middle earth in the third and fourth age. Well done sir.
It's impossible for me to define a favorite character in LOTR, but Gimli...so many great quotes.
Mr J true true well said. so many.
Thank you so very much for this video!!!
I have requested this video from the start!!!
He is my most favorite character in this universe!!!!
"Let's hunt some orc."
".....hmmm......YEEEEEEEESSSSS!!!!"
Your summation about why you loved making this video is why I loved hearing it. I have characters in LOTR that I favor more than Gimli, but when I hear this story about his life, I wonder how that can be so.
I love gimilis storyline it the most wholesome thing in Tolkien’s work
I just want to say out of all the glorious videos on UA-cam, I enjoy your the most. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your hard work in making these videos for all of Is to enjoy🙏👍😊
Good work. I enjoyed this very much as Gimli is my favorite Dwarf.
Never complaining when an video is made about everyone's favorite Dwarf (al time favorite fantasy/lotr race aswell)! Keep up the amazing work.
One of my favorite in the fellowship
Gimli is my favorite character of the story. Thanks for the video!
Gimli: Toss me.
Aragorn: What?
Gimli: I can not jump the distance you’ll have to toss me!
NOT THE BEARD!!!
Don’t tell the elf
Yoystan you are awesome. You've taught me so much of Tolkien's work. Thank You.
Man, I freaking love your intros 😃
To praise Gimli, son of Glòin, enough would take more ink than the Sundering Seas could hold. A truer hero and friend cannot be found outside of Durin's folk. As long as the hammer pounds in Dwarven halls underground, the name of Gimli will ring with every pound.
Baruk Khazad! Khazad Ai-menu!
Let it never be said that Gimili was ever a fair-weather friend.
Thank you UA-cam for providing me with just the right amount of content every now and then. Haven't watched anything about LOTR in a while so this was a spontaneous recommendation done right.
Right, time to go binge watch every scene with Gimli in it lol (especially when he meets Galadriel)
I've watched a few of your videos, but coming upon this gem I've decided to subscribe. This gave me all the feels. Thank you
I can hear that opening fanfare before the videos even start. Love you guys. Thank you.
Thanks again. Another awesome video. I look forward to these vids every Sunday more than any show on TV.
You've done it again, sir! Another triumph of a vid on a splendid character!
It’s times like these that, as a player and enthusiast of D&D, that I would like to emulate this character in-game. I thank Tolkien and his son for creating, preserving, such a beloved and compelling character.
Damn this gave me chills! Love Gimli so much!!
"That's my wee lad, Gimli! (who happens to be 62)" said Gloin to Legolas.
77777Spooky aged differently remember lol dwarves do
Well, Gloin could carry a portrait of his son at a younger age.
Legolas has recent memories of 500 years ago, though
Excellent work! I always enjoy listening to your tales. Thank you so much!
This is a brilliant Channel. You are amazingly knowledgable about one of my favourite things in the world! Massive thumbs up from the UK. 👍
