THIS IS FOR YOUR OLD TIMERS: I recently had to have cataract surgery as the eyes were getting to where I could not drive at night and a change in glasses was of no help. Couldn't see gun sights very well. I was afraid of eye surgery.... So I waited until it was not a choice to continue without the surgery. WOW! 30 minutes in and out and my vision is back to a bright 20/20 and an occasional number 2 reader for very small print. If old eyes are your problem and it is cataract related, I for one say, "GET 'ER DONE!". It is great to see like you did when you were 25.

Weird, I was just about to watch your 1886 disassembly video again while I have my morning tea … and this popped up. Thanks for the new video! Love that Marlin and cool old school scope.
Well I'm glad to be able to spare you from that long tedious video. But I have to confess, I go back and watch it every now and then as well. That is an amazing and complex rifle!
I know full well the old adage, "the better you can see, the better you can shoot" via Jim Carmichael from Outdoor Life. I had a similar Weaver 2.5X on my 22 Marlin and popped heads on game plus trash birds all around our feed lots. Neighbors would supply a 50 count box of shells and trust me around their livestocks to shoot for affect (and fun). On a 44 Mag, it would be fun picking your bullet path thru the woods and across the fields. Enjoy that rifle!
That beautifully renewed Weaver looks like an admirably useable addition to your Marlin. In the decades since passing the half century mark, I have come to appreciate low power bright scopes on short to medium range rifles and on handguns.

30 years ago we used to send all of our Weavers to El Paso about 6 years ago or so we heard that they were out of business sold out I can't recall the name right now of the company but they were really good. On all my rifles that I hunt with I love the microtrac straight 8 Weaver 56 mm optic been hunting with those for about 45 years when Weaver was still producing them. And yes we have lost a lot of trees also that's why my policy is I do not cut any good trees.
Thanks for your comment! Sorry that the Heat and drought is that far west. I sent a weaver 2 to 7 Power Scope to them to fix the elevation turret. They completely rebuilt it as good or better than new. I was very happy. 200 bucks. Worth every penny
@@TargetSuite I'm a 60 model also I love my old stuff can't beat it, as I mentioned in the last reply I was buying the recondition straight 8 microtrac Weaver 56 mm optic for 150 bucks sent to me, but like everything else the prices have skyrocketed.

Missed you, George. I have the great fortune to own more than 40 rifles (not counting my wife's, 'cause she doesn't share guns anyway). Exactly TWO of them have scopes. @@TargetSuite nope. It's got a ring fore and one aft of the turrets. Exactly how the original owner set it up for hunting. No weird eye relief issues to speak of.
Great to see an update with you! Have missed your videos. I'm with you brother, love that rifle, caliber and the weaver scope upgrade! Fantastic combination. I always liked the weaver scopes in past. God bless all here.
I have scopes on half of my lever guns. K4 came on like three of them at the time of purchase. Two of my savage 99's have scopes, one newer one vintage. They are hunting guns and you should set them up for your hunting needs. Try the leupold hog plex, 1-4. If you like the looks and size of vintage but also want modern features. OG danger show sold me on two of them, one on a 94 winchester carbine in 44, one on a ruger american ranch in 7.62x39. Compact, clear, light weight.
Good to see you back! What a cool thing to do to bring back old scopes! I am one that hates to see scopes on lever guns but if that gets the job done than go for it!
I agree. I have an older JM 1894 Marlin made in 97 and when I bought it, it had a scope on it but I just couldn't get use to seeing a classice lever gun with a scope. I have 4 levers now. So I took the scope off and put classic buckhorns back on, I can't bring myself to putting a red dot on my Colt SA 1873 either, I do have red dots and scopes on other stuff, but just can't do it on the old classics that didn't have it then. Oh well, I'm a Fudd as they call us old geazers. I'm glad to see Ruger keeping the levers alive, and doing a great job on them too.
It does look out of place for those of us who like the classic look, though they have been mounting scopes on them since just after the civil war, man not effective or reliable but has been being done since the 19th century.
Apparently I jumped the gun with my email. I'm glad the pond project is progressing. That 1894 Marlin is a beautiful rifle. There are a couple of shots in your video that really make the beauty of that rifle stand out. Very interesting about the scope. We'll be wondering how your hunt comes out. Stay cool George.
Good to see ya back. I've got that same scope on my old JM Marlin 1895 in 45-70. Mine has the command post reticle. That looks like a sweet setup for that rifle and with the older eyes it's a great help.
I wish this one had the post Crosshair. The fine crosshairs are great but I suspect at dusk they'll be harder to find. In any case I like it and it's a huge improvement over irons.
As always thank you for the time you put into your videos. Great content without the BS. Pond is looking amazing as well as the gun! Oh and I think scopes are just fine for helping hit what your aiming at!
Nice to see you! Please do not feel obligated to create shooting videos in that heat. I am in Middle Georgia where it is hot, but not THAT hot. I am looking forward to the pond video.
Beautiful firearm ❤ Nice choice of scope for it as well 😀 I actually put an older Bushnell 1x4x24 on my Henry.. figured it would help find my load easier.. and it's still fun to shoot! If you are planning on hunting with your rifle.. a scope makes perfect sense.. especially for aging eyes like mine! Thanks for sharing this brother
Personally, I have no problem with a scoped lever action. Especially when used for hunting. Regarding the pond, I'd consider adding some pea gravel areas for the bass to bed on.
I shot the largest deer I harvested last year with a 44 mag Henry lever action with a 16” barrel at 120 yards “scoped”. The deer dropped where he stood with a double lung shot. 240 grain SJHP in and out. He literally took 3 steps. I was very impressed with the 44 magnum performance. Happy hunting sir.
Always great to see you! That 1894 is just beautiful. I'm hoping Ruger is ramping up production and we'll start to see more of glynn in the market. I had an old Weaver 4x on my Savage 99. It was mounted on tip over rings so thr iron sights could still be utilized. I'm looking forward to the next one and any updates on thr pond. Be safe out there in the heat.
Good to see you. We assumed that you were too busy with the pond project to be out shooting and filming. That is a major project. Thanks for sharing it with us and I look forward to seeing it as it progresses. You made a nice rifle even nicer with that vintage scope. The .44 magnum does hit with authority!
I have the same scoope. A weaver k2.5-b. I live in sweden and actually send my scoope to vintage gun scoopes about a month ago for a complete restoration. It cost me nearly a week of salary so i hope it will turn out real nice. I will put in on my ruger made marlin 1895 sbl. I think the scoope will come back sometimes in december januari. Good luck with the pond.
Missed you- always enjoy your videos. Love that scope! My eyesight at this age makes a scope on my lever guns a must. That 1894 in 44mag was the model I was waiting for; but watching you side load it is making me second think it. I really like the tube load on my Henry Big Boy Steel and Big Boy Classic- I have been spoiled. Maybe when they come out with the 24" barrel Cowboy model 1894, all resistance will go away:) Thanks again.
Thanks! I appreciate your comment. From a pure ease of loading perspective, Henry has the right solution. But I think you are right. A 24-in cowboy model would be a must-have! Thanks again.
George, you missed your calling.....frogman deluxe lol. I like the scope on the rifle. very classic looking. May I suggest one of the picatinny rails that dovetails into the rear site slot. I forget the name of the company, maybe XS sights. The one that makes the rails for the Marlins. Wife and I joined FBC Colmesneil last sunday. We finally got our new pastor. Great preaching. Very encouraged. God bless.
Thanks for the update George. I suspected you were busy with work on the lake. I would enjoy hearing what you have to share about dealing with the heavy trigger pull lever guns are known to have. Reports are the new Ruger Marlins measure out at over eight pounds. And I thought the five -to-six pound trigger on my Model 94 was a lot. Mix in the poor eyesight of older guys like me who prefer iron sights on a lever gun and its amazing we can hit anything.
Thanks for your comment. I haven't had to do anything so far on the triggers. But one option is the replacement trigger from Ranger point precision. I've heard they will certainly lighten things up a little bit, and get rid of the Flop if that's something that bothers you.
That scope/rifle combination is looking sharp! I think what matters when it comes to putting a scope on a lever gun is does it go well with the lines and style of the rifle. If it does then I say have it. Frankly, for all the people who keep complaining about scopes on guns all I can say is that the market has overwhelmingly spoken. If scopes weren't popular then more rifles would be coming with iron sights, and less firearms would be drilled and tapped or dovetailed for mounting a scope.
Great video, I have a few weaver 2.5 and 3x K series scopes I need to send out. In the dark woods, the scope does help especially on dark animals. I hate to not run peeps but the scope is a better tool as Townsend whelen, Elmer Keith, and jack o Conner all said in their books for timber hunting.
It's great to see you posting content, George! Like yourself, I am a heretic... just not as bad! :) That was so thoughtful of Austin to keep you company while you went out in that "water." I was thinking you'd feign being in distress jut to see him come rushing to your aid. You're a better man than I! I hear they're looking for a replacement for The Tidy Bowl Man.
@@TargetSuite Thank you. I still think Ruger should have come out with the .45 Colt first, but that's why I'm not their CEO. :) On a serious note, I wonder how values will be impacted with Ruger putting out superior products within the Marlin line. I mean, even JM era rifles had their shortcomings. I know. Heresy!
Having spend near 20 years in manufacturing myself (engineering side of things), I can appreciate the speed at which Ruger has managed to move the entire Marlin factory across States, set up, reconfigure all the machinery and drawings and CAD models, improve the designs, get them functioning on the machines, and put out much improved product. Crazy amount of work. While I don't like the price of ANYTHING these days (dollar is weaker than it's ever been since 1933), I'm happy the product is improved.
That is a fine looking rifle and that scope looks like it belongs there. You might want to put the hammer extension on - I’m not crazy about the one that came with my 336 but my early ‘70s 1894 came with a really nice one. Thanks for calling out Vintage Gun Scopes. I’d love to get another Lyman Alaskan …
Thanks for your comment. I may look at a hammer extension down the road. But it generally if I can get my thumb in there to safely cock and decock I prefer to keep it clean. I don't remember who pointed out vintage gun scopes to me but it has changed my future when it comes to scopes. I would much prefer to have an older reworked scope than a modern one. Yes the modern ones from companies like loophole and others are fantastic Scopes but I just like old when it comes to gun stuff.
@@TargetSuite I know exactly what you mean. My Dad’s sporterized Mauser has a Lyman Alaskan scope on it. Only 2.5x and an old German style reticle that works very well for me. No BDS monkey business, hash marks or Christmas trees - just a clean sight picture.
That scope. I've got a K-2.5 with fine crosshairs and about a 2 or 3 MOA black dot. It's mounted on modern black AK in 7.62x39. It always gets comments and looks incongruous, but works great on the platform.
Well you know me, I love a scope on a lever gun mainly because my old eyes need all the help they can get. I have a video coming out about my Rossi R92 .357 where I have a melt down and I'm blaming the peep sight. It will post on 8/20 so check it out when you can. I love old vintage Weaver scopes. I have a couple that were my dad's and one is on his 25-06 Mauser sporter rifle. Watching you dive to turn the ball valve reminded me of a Farm pond where the farmer had created a long T handle that was mounted on the pole next next to the valve. That way he could access it from a boat. Just a thought if you have some welding capability. Also, today at our camp next to my property the water meter blew a seal. They water guy said to just turn it on for needed water and when I did it blew out so much mud that it completely soaked me from head to toe. Luckily I always keep a set of spare clothes in a bag in my truck. That made my ride home more comfortable. All I could do was laugh about it. Thanks for the video and see you soon.
Came for the classic firearm, stayed for the pond!

The scope on a lever gun? Well, I've had a vintage Sears Ted Williams scope on my Marlin guide gun in 45/70 for about 25 years.
Excellent!
I have the same scope but 4x on my 1964 .35 rem 336. Very nice optics for its age. Mine hasn't been refurbished so yours is probably a bit nicer.
Sweet! Did you have to mount yours with the turret in front of the Rings?
@@TargetSuite nope. It's got a ring fore and one aft of the turrets. Exactly how the original owner set it up for hunting. No weird eye relief issues to speak of.
Great to see an update with you! Have missed your videos.
I'm with you brother, love that rifle, caliber and the weaver scope upgrade! Fantastic combination. I always liked the weaver scopes in past.
God bless all here.
👊
Good to see you again. Nice scope. Nothing wrong with a scope on a lever gun, especially with aging eyes.
Amen!
Very nice video, George. Good luck with your pond-and stay cool!
Appreciate the kind words. But since it's impossible to stay cool, I'm just trying to stay alive😄
Glad to see another great video!👍🏽😀❤️🇺🇸 wow you’re a water dog too!…LOL
Haha!💦🐕
I have scopes on half of my lever guns. K4 came on like three of them at the time of purchase. Two of my savage 99's have scopes, one newer one vintage. They are hunting guns and you should set them up for your hunting needs. Try the leupold hog plex, 1-4. If you like the looks and size of vintage but also want modern features. OG danger show sold me on two of them, one on a 94 winchester carbine in 44, one on a ruger american ranch in 7.62x39. Compact, clear, light weight.
I've got one of those Leupold 1-4 pigplex scopes and really like it.
It does look out of place for those of us who like the classic look, though they have been mounting scopes on them since just after the civil war, man not effective or reliable but has been being done since the 19th century.
old scopes are great; i install vintage Redfield scopes on all of my old rifles; class act.
No worries, Roy. Your encouragement is always a blessing!
You are welcome. I was reminded this morning how much I enjoy making videos and sharing with you guys.
It's also important to have your own time sir!
Great to see you, cool vintage scope on a vintage rifle, a completely cool set up.
👍👍
Those old Weaver scopes are great and I am forever on the look out for them, I am very much in favor of a scope on a lever gun
Good hunting (on the old Weavers, I mean) 😉
Nice to see you! Please do not feel obligated to create shooting videos in that heat. I am in Middle Georgia where it is hot, but not THAT hot. I am looking forward to the pond video.
Thanks!
YOU - DA - MAN
Beautiful firearm ❤
Nice choice of scope for it as well 😀
I actually put an older Bushnell 1x4x24 on my Henry.. figured it would help find my load easier.. and it's still fun to shoot!
If you are planning on hunting with your rifle.. a scope makes perfect sense.. especially for aging eyes like mine!
Thanks for sharing this brother
Thanks for watching and thank you for your comment!
@@TargetSuite you're welcome brother!
Personally, I have no problem with a scoped lever action. Especially when used for hunting. Regarding the pond, I'd consider adding some pea gravel areas for the bass to bed on.
Pea gravel is definitely on the list. We'll see what's left in the budget when we get to that point.
Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm looking forward to taking that 44 Mag in the woods.
Thank you! I appreciate your comment.
Good to see you. We assumed that you were too busy with the pond project to be out shooting and filming. That is a major project. Thanks for sharing it with us and I look forward to seeing it as it progresses. You made a nice rifle even nicer with that vintage scope. The .44 magnum does hit with authority!
The pond and the heat were definitely demotivators when it comes to video production.
The old man in the sea!😂
Haha! I resemble that remark!
I run a 2.5x leupold scope on my Henry and my marlin 336
Great rifle great video hope the heat lets up soon.
Amen to that!
Wow! That's fantastic! I sent them an old weaver 2x - 7x and they worked wonders with it. I hope your experience is the same.
Thanks again.
good to see you back. I've been watching your vids the whole time. I guess I've been catching up.
Don't really care for scopes on lever guns, but as I got older and my eyes changed I have to have one
Yes sir. It becomes a matter of necessity.
That wind has to feel good with the heat.
Normally it does. But when the 15 mph Breeze is 105°, it is just sucking the life out of everything living!
Old Man Still Got It
Just a little slower, perhaps😉
Hey George! Good to see you! We just finished the hottest and driest July on record in New Mexico. I can relate!
Wow! I think it's that El Niño thing😉
God bless.
Thanks for your comment Max. Glad to hear you finally found a home!
@@TargetSuite we are too.
👍😊🎯 my vision says put a scope on everything.
Haha! I'm getting there!
@@TargetSuite painted up sights on rest.
If scopes weren't popular then more rifles would be coming with iron sights, and less firearms would be drilled and tapped or dovetailed for mounting a scope.
.681 -👍 Great video. The images are beautiful.
Thanks!
I've missed you!! And I'm looking for a .429 mag Ruger Magnum. You've talked me into it!!!!
Good to see you , try and stay cool.
Thanks!
Haha! I've missed your comments as well. Nobody plants their tongue as firmly in cheek as you do😄
@@TargetSuite Thank you. I still think Ruger should have come out with the .45 Colt first, but that's why I'm not their CEO. :)
On a serious note, I wonder how values will be impacted with Ruger putting out superior products within the Marlin line.
Amen!
Thanks. I'll keep an eye out for that video.
