The Problem with IMAX "Enhanced" on Disney+

  • Disney Plus's IMAX Enhanced shows a version to subscribers that filmmakers did not intend for them to watch on their home TVs. These Marvel movies shows in IMAX Enhanced mode essentially expands their aspect ratios to 1.9:1. While I don't think this is inherently bad, there is some issues with taking that Imax format and putting it on the small screen.

      True. I upgraded to 85” and with a 10-13ft viewing distance the “theatrical” crops seem both claustrophobic (the head are sooo big!) and yet small because of tremendous amount of black bars. More and more people are buying big TVs but it doesn’t really matter. 16:9 crop looks always better than black bars. On any TV. I already have enough wall space surrounding my TV for it to breathe.

    I actually like the IMAX enhanced versions of the movies that were shot in IMAX. I really feel like it actually makes the home viewing experience quite cinematic. It’s also kinda a treat for those who really wanted to see it in IMAX but weren’t able to and finally get the opportunity to see it years after its release. As someone who saw several of these movies in IMAX, I’m really glad that Disney acknowledges that some people saw the movies in IMAX and wanted to see it again in their preferred way of viewing them. For me, I feel like these films set the bar for IMAX. For several years filmmakers who have used IMAX cameras have made history. Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight is the first Hollywood film to be shot with IMAX cameras. Michael Bay made IMAX history twice by shooting Age of Extinction with the IMAX 3D digital camera and later The Last Knight with Arri IMAX 2D cameras on a 3D rig. Regardless of the quality of the films, both were technical feats for IMAX. It wasn’t until The Russo Brothers’ involvement in the MCU for Captain America Civil War, Avengers Infinity War and Endgame where they made the record of being the first film to be shot with Arri IMAX cameras and the first films to be shot entirely in the IMAX ratio. And now every studio is wanting in on trying to film movies entirely in the IMAX ratio. For me, these were big deals that the normal moviegoer wouldn’t consider. Bringing in the IMAX enhanced versions of these movies allow the viewer to see what they’ve missed if they couldn’t see it. I’m quite proud that IMAX is slowly expanding their product beyond theaters and documentaries. I know that’s a lot to take in, but these films were pretty revolutionary for Disney, Marvel, and IMAX.

    I just preferred the more blended approach in that the more smaller scenes should only be shown in the traditional 2.39 aspect ratio, and the action scenes should be 1.9 to give it more scale. That's particularly where Nolan excels at doing and it makes for a great viewing experience, even at home.

      Nolan does it though mainly because he is shooting on Imax film cameras. You really can't shoot dialogue scenes with those cameras because they are so loud so it's the reason he only uses them on action scenes. Meanwhile the Marvel movies are shot on digital Imax cameras and because of that, they aren't loud so they shoot everything in Imax. And Nolan has said that he wants to shoot more smaller scale scenes in Imax too and just waiting for technology to be able to be able to remove the camera noise, Because he will never shoot a movie digitally.

    Good video. Well put together and clearly explained.
    For me the IMAX enhanced versions are better because in some frames (the ones that were filmed with this in mind probably) you just see more.
    For example Endgame: at tony's funeral there is a scene where tony has a message for his morgan. In this scene thor and steve are in the back ground. Never knew this till the imax enhanced version where you can see their faces. It just felt like the original stole a bit from me. Where as the imax version gave it back
    Now some movies, like black widow, are not entirely in the tall ratio. It varies, some frames are normal and some frames are tall.
    At the end of the day I'll pick IMAX enhanced every time because you could miss somethings if you don't watch it in imax.
    But it's good that disney gives you the option.

      Problem is obviously in many cases for marvel movies imax aspect ratio is an afterthought or just an attempt to make as universal frame as possible, that's why there is a lot of just boring negative space in imax framing. But there are movies that have framing almost exclusive for imax and look worse on tv aspect ratio, for example, Dune or Dunkirk.

I have a projector, and the size of my screen allows for the changing aspect ratios to look really good. Only a few scenes are in Imax. But when I tried to watch Doctor Strange in the multiverse of madness, all of the visual effects seem to look fake, I don’t know if it’s the added resolution that does it, I even noticed it for Infinity War, especially with digital characters. On top of that you have every ad and music videos with stupid fake black bars to make it look cool so you end up having black bars on your 1.78/1 widescreen tv all the time.
    And these Marvel type blockbusters are framed in 2.39/1 but still shot in 1.78 or Imax 1.43 as anyone can see on the monitors of every making of on blu-rays.
    Shoot the bloody movies on 1.78/1 and everything else unless you are Sergio Leone and actually know how to use the wide format and compose your shots accordingly. First movie I enjoyed this IMAX switch was Chris Nolans the Dark Knight with well placed scenes that benefitted from the IMAX, true IMAX filming. The Switches is the first Guardians of the Galaxy film I also enjoyed. But for the first time ever, I enjoyed an IMAX switch, where is became a character of the film rather than a noticeable visual change was Batman VS Superman. It wasn't until a second viewing did I understand why I was feeling an extra boost of emotion when I noticed the IMAX Change. So I like it all...as Queen has said, I WANT IT ALL. And I want it now. Then to get the full size you have to zoom the image or use the letter box image. Again what a waste if we get the so full screen in the theater and it's made the way we should see it that way, isn't that the reason for the flat screen we have at home to see the full picture. It's just directors and cinematographers who use IMAX for contractual reasons or to justify the more expensive ticket, just like it was with 3D in the last decade. A lot of content is reviewed and modified for that purpose.
    So, that "theatrical version" it's almost what you see in the theater.
    In the case of IMAX films, I think too much is lost either in image or screen when traditionally adjusted.
    I say the more of the tv screen is used, the better, and that's why the enhanced is a cool version.
    I agree that it would benefit from a little bit of reframing, but it should be done by the director.

    The framing is done so to immerse the viewer. By making these unmanipulated shots, you feel like you're actually in the scene, because you don't frame a shot when looking at something with your eyes. 1.43, for example, shows the immersivenessnof that format, even on the small screen a 1.43 video is very immersive

    I just like it because it fills my TV and remove the black bars even if it's useless information......it feels good just like it feels good in imax theatres even if it's not directly visible......I prefer watching movies like Avengers 1 3 4, Ant-man and Shang-Chi on my TV as it has a taller aspect ratio throughout the whole movie.......

    Unless you have a strong aesthetic preference for one framing or the other and are focusing more on that than just being immersed in the film, I don't really see what the argument is. Yes, the 1.9 version has more space above the actor's head, but isn't there just as much extra image below the 2.39 version as above it? In other words, assuming you're watching on a screen with an aspect ratio below 1.9, won't the character's face be the exact same size and in the exact same location on your screen in both versions?

    • @riahmatic
      @riahmatic Рік тому +1

      It's a matter of composition. Compositional choices are intentionally made to draw your eye to certain parts of the screen vs. others and some ratios of spacing are more aesthetically pleasing than others. And as was explained in the video, extra information that can be distracting is "cropped" naturally in a true IMAX theatre but shown at home. In a visual medium all of these facts change the experience that film makers spend months/years designing.

    It's not issue of IMAX.
    it's the Cinematography and Framing/Composition in IMAX Frame of the DP of the Movie.
    I know some Framing/Composition of other Movie are so Tight and Loose it still doesn't matter. You're getting the Correct Image No Matter What, the way they intended.

    I can’t speak from a cinema IMAX experience because my local theatre doesn’t offer it. But, watching on a TV just makes the film look cheap. It’s like the soap opera effect for aspect ratios.
    Let’s be real. Without the massive screen it’s basically just 16:9.

  • @morenol1990
    @morenol1990 Рік тому

    I usually prefer a taller aspect ratio for films at home viewing, but wasted negative space os kind of annoying. I'd much prefer the framing to be used accordingly as opposed to use as much of the tv frame as possible, just because it looks cooler.
    One way to get ahead of this is to frame the IMAX scenes for both theatrical and home viewing with proper space used in the frame. Just look at any Guillermo del Toro film. He uses a slightly taller aspect ratio of 1:85:1 and uses the right amount of space in each frame, with no empty framing at the top of the screen.
    Also, a 2:35:1 aspect is great. Let's not dismiss it. Some of the best films in history have been filmed in this ratio. Just look at some of your favorite films to see how many have that ratio. All in all, not every film should have the same ratio. It should be utilized according to what the filmmakers had in mind.

    2.39 is the best format and 95 percent of films are shot in that format. It is the closest to the human vision which is more let to right not up and down. It is especially a joke when most theatres are Liemax not real IMAX.

    • @tshddx
      @tshddx 2 роки тому +3

      Our field of vision is nowhere near that wide. It's more like 1.5 to 1.8. But that's not really a great reason to prefer any particular aspect ratio except when you get to a very high field of view that comes close to filling our entire field of view, like VR or *maybe* some of the very large format cinemas. Wider aspect ratios like Scope are really just a creative choice. They work particularly well for landscapes, and some action scenes can make great use of it (see the Ben-Hur chariot scenes for a great example with an even wider image). They can also be used to great creative effect with horizontal movement in the frame and horizontal symmetry. In my opinion, 2.39 and wider are much clunkier for close ups or scenes with a lot of interesting vertical motion or space (like a lot of indoor stuff).

    In my experience it depends on the movie. It works with a lot of Nolan's films because his framing isn't quite as meticulous. He shoots for the big screen anyways and lets the audience do some of the framing themselves. He doesn't seem to shoot with specific shot compositions in mind. Other filmmakers have specific compositions in mind, might even storyboard their entire film for a specific aspect ratio. In those cases the expanded frame just ruins the composition. That's why I'm glad there's no IMAX version on any home release of Dune.

    For the average viewer, they need to stop buying shit TVs and go for a Q-LED/OLED and get with the times. Also, as the 'film maker' intended to it is known to be absolute garbage because newer TVs come with a 'Film maker' mode which lowers the brightness and covers the image in a pissy yellow.
