Wish Disney had offered these movies with expanded aspect ratio years ago but better late than never I guess?! Would be nice if they follow-up with IMAX Enhanced versions of MCU movies on physical 4K UHD Blu-ray. Here’s hoping…
That would be awesome to get them on physical!
As far as I know, IMAX also has distribution rights for the IMAX footage that the studios make and that's why they didn't have it anywhere else before this. (Not a 100% sure, I read this on Reddit.)
Reddit can have some good info…and some bad info.
IMAX does not hold the rights to the footage. Marvel does (and subsequently Disney). IMAX is but a tool in all of this. It’s only their equipment, they’re not creating anything.
@@MovieUniversity Thank You. I read it on r/movies and the comment had tons of upvotes so I thought the person knew what they were talking. 😂
Can you shoot me a link please?
Thank you for the update on IMAX Enhanced on Disney+.
My pleasure!
Some updates or clarifications:
1) The DTS:X mix is not available YET on Disney+. However, DTS and Disney plan to have DTS:X available to stream within the next 6 months.
2) I misspoke in the video when I said Infinity War and Endgame were the only two movies shot entirely in IMAX digital. Shang Chi and The Suicide Squad were also shot entirely in IMAX digital.
3) If you stream from an Apple TV device you will not be getting the DTS audio mix regardless. Apple does not pay for the license fee for DTS. Behind the scenes, many of the audio technicians and engineers at Apple previously worked at Dolby Labs and of course they don't want their former competition streaming from their device if it can be helped.
AppleTV has Apple Music with tracks in Dolby Atmos, so I think their decision makes sense more so than any bias.
I was going to ask this , I watched back widow & shangh chi and neither switched my amp into imax enhanced mode .
I am so happy imax E is being rolled out . I have the newest bad boys on 4k blu Ray and is the only title that I've had that made use of imax audio mix .
So if Disney + release DTS X, the Disney app through the 4k apple tv won't play it? What about atmos which Disney + has and plays through apple 4k tv already.
Does IMAX Enhanced offer Disney Plus to LG OLED or do you still require brand specific tv and equipment with a special code.
@@jb7753 Sorry man, just saw this. The UA-cam studio app for creators is awful when it comes to sifting through replies.
Since Apple TV won't stream DTS, the system will revert to Atmos.
Once a again a great video with good indepth information. Smaller black bars equals in more usable pixels from your TV, so that is already a big win I think. In season 2 episode 1 of the Mandalorian there is also an IMAX scene, TV just came alive with that scene! 👍🏾✌🏾
Soon we'll have ultra IMAX in Glorious 4:3 aspect ratio! Those retro 20th century TV's were ahead of their time. 😆
😂😂😂
I’m really enjoying it. I hope they expand it to non MCU films such as Star Wars Sequel trilogy and others.
Unfortunately, I doubt we'll get any more IMAX Enhanced versions of MCU movies. However, an insider told me Disney plans to rollout more movies in IMAX Enhanced that are not MCU related going forward.
@@MovieUniversity why do you doubt this?
If a movie wasn't originally shot with IMAX Enhanced cameras then they can't make it IMAX Enhanced to fill up the entire frame. If they do fill up the frame it'll be because other parts of the picture got chopped off, which of course defeats the purpose of IMAX Enhanced.
@@MovieUniversity Could this possibly included footage that is shot on a 1.43:1 ratio like in the case of the force awakens and even The Last Jedi? 🤔
The case for? I don’t understand what you’re asking?
Never click on a video this fast. Lol. We always value these videos your putting up. Keep them coming!
As of 30 November, 2021, Disney+, in the Marvel Section, lists 13 IMAX Enhanced titles. Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Black Widow, Avengers Endgame, Captain Marvel, Ant-man and the Wasp, Avengers Infinity War, Black Panther, Thor Ragnarok, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Doctor Strange, Captain America Civil War, Guardians of the Galaxy and Iron Man.
This was actually informative! I didn’t know IMAX audio in the cinema was designed the way it was. I knew about the speaker layout, sizes, etc.
Me either. That’s interesting that they don’t use subwoofers. I wish they offered speakers like that, I thought my speakers were full range. I have Kef Q750
I just wish these "IMAX Enhanced" versions were available on 4K discs.
An industry insider told me it’s possible that might happen in 2022 😉
A little late to the party here but I experienced IMAX Enhanced for the first time last night via Disney+ and was very impressed with the visuals and audio even though neither my TV or soundbar is IMAX Enhanced. The HDR and aspect ratio alone were fantastic.
Basically, It's all a marketing scheme where IMAX reserves exclusive rights to the fullest content that can fit in standard 16:9 format that studios distribute in order to inflate costs for consumers for a more exclusive experience.
Marketing, yes. Nefarious scheme? No. It’s about the camera sensor size in imax cameras. Watch the video I made on how aspect ratios work in the description.
Yeap. Sensor size is one.
But another thing is you have to remember, IMAX design their screens to sit nearer to the screen to fill your peripheral vision. So the story is still meant (in IMAX’s perspective) to be told in anamorphic, but the extra screen real estate fills your peripheral vision as if there’s no end to your eyes and feels larger. The extra real estate wasn’t exactly use for story telling (although some filmmakers have taken advantage of that).
From the years after filmmakers have used the the extra real estate for more than just peripheral vision, IMAX enhanced on consumer level is just giving ppl whatever fully was shot.
But I do agree that it’s not meant to be the way normal IMAX is and my own opinion, IMAX is reducing is quality of name by doing it with Disney although it helps bring the brand more known.
It's too bad we aren't getting the IMAX Enhanced audio over Disney+ even on devices like the Nvidia Shield which can pass through DTS. The sound we get on Disney+ is Dolby Atmos, so no IMAX Enhanced audio for now. From my understanding, the Apple TV hardware does not support DTS, so it may not be possible on that.
On Nov 8th, 2021 Disney stated if you stream the IMAX Enhanced movies you will hear the DTS:X sound mix of the movies. If you're system is not equipped to decode DTS, the sound mix will revert to the Dolby Atmos mix.
@@MovieUniversity I have a Denon X4700H AVR which is IMAX Enhanced capable. Nvidia Shield hardware is capable of DTS. So, I'm not sure what else you would need to get the audio aspect. If you could link to the article, I would appreciate it.
@@joentell I had to go back and reread what you wrote. I replied too fast and didn't process what you had said properly.
Yes, as you know, Apple TV does not support DTS (unfortunately). I asked Brian why (the interviewee from this video). He said Apple just doesn't want to pay the licensing fee. DTS wants Apple, but Apple doesn't want DTS. It's a pain for me to because I love my Apple TV device.
I got my facts mixed up, but there's no way to edit the video after it's gone up. DTS:X mixes for these movies have already been done (according to my source), BUT they are not just yet available on Disney+. However, Disney does plan on putting the DTS:X mixes on Disney+ in the near future. So even when the DTS mix is available on Disney+ you still won't be able to hear it on Apple.

(Also, very honored to have a big channel like yours comment on a small one like mine)
@@MovieUniversity Hey thanks for the info! I think it will be a good thing when the sound part gets to Disney+.
I wonder which devices other than the Shield will support DTS-X on Disney Plus.
On the Daily Hifi Podcast, we recently talked a bit about the need for BEQ (bass EQ) on many movies mixed for home viewing as they remove a lot of the low-frequency bass. IMAX Enhanced should fix that issue.
One of my sources tells me DTS:X will roll out on Disney+ within the next 6 months. Behind the scenes there was a desire by Marvel to rush out the expanded aspect ratio since Marvel and IMAX have had a close relationship for years now. However, for the sound parts of things it actually apparently is a lot more labor intensive to roll that out onto a big streaming service like Disney+.
For me it has other perspective. Movies are really awesome in cinema with an 2,35:1 aspect ratio and when something is made just 16:9 it looks not very cinematic. Nowadays we live in a streaming era, which is something even more serious than just watch tv channels. So in a streaming service a movie made in pure 16:9 aspect ratio does not look so cinematic but 2,35:1 is starting to feel too much wide for all rigid 16:9 home screens. If TV has to evolve 18:9 would be a way (and not so far wide from everything) In my opinion, for streaming 2,0:1 would have been the best of both worlds but then it does not come as a standard branded like the prestige of IMAX.
For me IMAX enhanced is just a clever new way to standardize a proper aspect ratio for streaming services which is 1,9:1 (one that still looks cinematic and fills much more a home screen) and clearly supported by cinemas too.
I hope that Disney + and more streaming services bring this aspect ratio to their offer. Looks great!
It also helps a lot with smartphones too since they're close to 18:9. So media in aspect ratios close to that would be great for almost all devices
Me on the contrary - I enjoy Netflix movies shot in 16: 9 and utilising my 65" almost entirely rather than downscale my screen to 55" with cinema movie ratio. Im paying extra for bigger screen I want every corner to be utilised not paying for black bar display
Very good video. Hopefully you could do a video on Dolby vs DTS sound.
I’m actually in the process of that right now!
@@MovieUniversity omg that's awesome funny how the universe works haha! It's a topic I've been curious with for a while but never any great explanation or experiences. Plus with the lack of DTS on most streaming devices and services I just never get to test it out fully other than test patterns. Thank you for everything you do!
It really comes down to the licensing and marketing of the department at DTS and Dolby. Dolby Labs does a better job of marketing their products to companies than DTS, unfortunately.
What about bitrate? We watched the IMAX Enhanced version of "Doctor Strange" on Disney+ this past weekend, and I swear the picture seemed to have a bit more detail than the standard Widescreen version, which I chalked up to maybe having less compression or higher bitrate. So I was surprised to not hear that come up in this video. Maybe placebo effect?
I want to know this answer!
Definitely the placebo effect. This is not uncommon. A lot of people will also say the DTS-MA sound track will sound better than the Dolby True HD mix but they're both lossless sound tracks and the file sizes is the same, it's just the prestige of DTS makes people think it sounds better in that instance.
Bitrates are the same for both formats on Disney+. A reddit user took screenshots of this recently. www.reddit.com/r/DisneyPlus/comments/qry03u/bitrate_of_imax_enhanced_movies/
What might have happened is the internet connection where you live. Depending on where you live and the time you're streaming something there might have been less bandwidth for the regular version to buffer. Happens a lot to people living in apartments or in the suburbs.
@@MovieUniversity you are wrong!!! Dts is superior!! Point blank.
No, I’m right. You’re just stating an opinion, I’m providing facts and statements from people in the industry. You can’t just say DTS is better. Which format? What year? What’s the bitrate?
Several DTS formats are indeed better than their Dolby counterparts. But DTS MA and Dolby TrueHD are indistinguishable.
It is superior because it is a unique master, with Imax colour grading.
The visual differences from the mass-theatrical versions aren't *just* the aspect ratio.
It's really obvious in Civil War, where the detail in the airport scene is incredibly pronounced, compared to the footage in the rest of the film.
Does imax make speakers?
Dolby Atmos IS the Home Theater version of Imax for sound if you have a Premium level System like I got.. I got a Dope JBL 5.1 and other than a speaker on the ceiling which is impracticable its immersive still and my ground rumbles on big explosive scenes in crystal clarity. Im happy with Atmos at Home..
So I’m confused, was DTS-X intended for IMAX 6 channel audio ? I never associated IMAX with an audio standard.
Don’t we lose part of the sides of the images when the IMAX image is translated for 16:9 televisions.
This will be a little complicated.
DTS:X was NOT intended for IMAX 6 channel audio, and it still isn't designed to replace IMAX's audio in theaters. IMAX entered into a partnership with DTS a couple of years ago to do the sound for IMAX movies for home media.
Why would you lose the sides of images if the image is shrank for home viewing?
You can have way better audio at home vs a theater. Simply because your room size is way smaller. Bigger speaker in larger rooms sounds way worse and unlocalized than small speakers pointing at you. At home, you're the recipient of audio, at the theater you just hear a bunch of inaccurate noises spread on a large room....
I subscribed because of this video 👍🏼
Thank you!
I don’t know about others. But I really like the taller aspect ratio of the IMAX version. I’m so tired of the black bars. I want to be able to enjoy every inch of the screen space on my TV I paid for. If I want the wide aspect ratio, I’d just go to a theater.
Cry more baby
That makes two of us
"If I want the wide aspect ratio, I’d just go to a theater." Well, yeah, because that's what most movies are made for... the theater... not your TV.
@Fint Flint It seems like most people don't understand the purpose of the black bars or how filmmakers can use aspect ratios as a tool. "crappy cinematic black borders widescreen ratios" They're not crappy and aspect ratios are used for a reason.
Will more tvs and apple TV be able to be upgraded to pass dts:x sound I got bad boys and jumanji on disks bad boys hardly blew my socks of with the sound mix
I just pinned a comment at the top about DTS and Apple. Check it out!
Do we have IMAX aspect ratio in India also?
The only IMAX theatre in my country is 3D. Wonder if Cinepolis has 2D theatres in other countries?
What country?
(I’m glad 3d is dying)
I was wondering today, why Endgame look so much bigger.
no infinity war and endgame aint anymore the only movies shot on imax digital now shang chi and the suicide squad was fully shot on 1.90:1 imax :)
Great catch!
Yeah. The Suicide Squad is unusual for showing in 1.90:1 everywhere, rather than a wider/shorter ratio in normal theaters
Is the sound better ?
IMAX is amazing AT THE MOVIE THEATER. At home it is a jarring aspect ratio changing during movie mess.
For home make a decision 2.35 0r 16:9 and make the whole movie that.
Ratio changes in the theater, too, unless the film was shot entirely in IMAX. In which case, you wouldn't get ratio changes at home, either. Maybe you're just noticing it less in the theater due to the additional immersion?
It switches back and forth in the movie theater as well. There is essentially no difference.🤷♂️
Can you please explain cinescape Eleven
My receiver suppports it but just says atmos when playing imax content
It should say DTS is playing IMAX Enhanced content.
Can u please explain iam seeing marvel movies by using 4 way zoom in my tv
Is this similar to imax enhanced?
I don't understand what you're asking.
I wish iTunes would do this. I own so many movies and would love the full 16:9 frame in IMAX scenes
Perhaps one day but probably not anytime soon. Apple is notorious for not wanting to pay licensing fees. Which is why we now have the Apple ecosystem.
@@MovieUniversity but iTunes is one of the only places to get Dolby vision content, most movies on Blu-ray are HDR-10. I could see them doing it
Netflix, AppleTV, Vudu and Amazon Prime all stream content in Dolby Vision. Not sure what you’re talking about.
@@MovieUniversity sure, just saying they are willing to pay Dolby vision license fees, so why not imax
The Dolby License was done years ago behind Steve Jobs' back by the marketing and licensing department at Apple. When Jobs found out he wanted to kill the contract but it had already been signed.
D+'s IMAX Enhanced thing is only aspect ratio. Hence you can play IMAX Enhanced with Dolby Vision/Atmos.
Read pinned comment at the top for DTS:X info.
@@MovieUniversity i read it before lol dont get me wrong. not just audio thing. True imax enhanced doesn have Dolby VISION.
Hey quick question if I have a small home theater sound speakers will it still work?
Yes
@@MovieUniversity thinks
Does IMAX the company have a say in when footage can be used?
Because I heard that's why the dark knight trilogy blu-rays use the IMAX ratio
Could you elaborate on the question. I’m not sure I understand.
@@MovieUniversity so does IMAX control when companies can use IMAX footage on Blu-ray?
Because thats what i heard where IMAX can tell the studios to not allow the physical Blu-ray releases to use IMAX ratios
So from that this is why only certain movie releases like the dark knight can switch back and forth based on what scenes were shot with IMAX cameras but for some reason other movies can not do the same for their Blu-ray releases
Sorry for being confusing
I have never heard of that from any official source. From my understanding it’s based largely on the directors preference.
Why hasn’t it released in India 😫
What do you mean no other movie beside Infinity War and Endgame were shot entirely with IMAX digital? What about Zack Snyder's Justice League?
Zack Snyder Justice Leaugue was shot on 65mm film not digital or IMAX
@@HeliosAnimation OK... Thanks.
@Helios Animation is correct. Justice League was shot on IMAX film, which is superior in every way to IMAX digital, except for when it comes to the editing process. Even then, Just League was not entirely filmed in the format. It's just too expensive.
sir I really want to know how the Batman should be viewed when it comes out 😭 imax or Dolby
Dolby Cinema.
Imax enhanced has 3D capability?
with the Marvel movies that are now IMAX ENHANCED, do they use DNR and all of these things? because im not a fan of them using DNR.
I can't confirm it, however, the answer should be no.
DNR is only used when a movie is shot on non IMAX cameras to bring it up to their standards or when a movie is being remastered from years ago to remove film grain or other on screen enhancements. Since these movies were shot digitally with IMAX cameras there should be no DNR.
Definitely not. The Imax masters feature *greater* detail, not less.
IMAX enhanced gear is another way to get the consumer's wallet to open. It offers nothing the consumer can't do himself.
Is this the reason why they remove dolby atmos on disney+
Thanks for asking!
Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos not showing up is an in app issue with Disney+. Even though you may not see the tags on screen once you play something you know is in Vision or Atmos your equipment should switch over to those modes.
Haven't seen it, but shang chi supposed to be the third movie completely in IMAX on Disney+...
You are correct! Unfortunately, I can't edit a video once it's been uploaded but, I pinned a comment at the top correcting my sentence from the video.
Avengers Infinity War and Endgame are not the only movies shot entirely with IMAX cameras, Shang Chi and The Suicide Squad was also shot entirely with IMAX cameras.
I already addressed this in the comment section.
Pardon me because I’m a simpleton. I have 2 stereo HomePods and stream everything from my Apple TV. How does this affect me? 🤯
It will give you a boost in the picture department, especially if you have 4K. The sound won’t be discernibly different
@@billelliott3507 watching on a Sony Oled so even better picture will be mind blowing. Many thanks!
@Adam Khimji for sure man, enjoy!
This is the longest anyone has ever taken to say no DSP (which most people who care turn off anyways) and full 16:9 screen ratio.
Dumb comment. IMAX Enhanced shots are not 16:9, they're 1:91, which means they'll still have small black bars at the top and bottom.
Just remove the black bars and leave the 16: 9 FULL format. That is enough for households. The 4: 3 format like the Justice League doesn't make much sense either. The best would be Full 16: 9 and that's it.
The full imax film ratio of 1.9:1 is larger that the 16:9 one. While it’s shrunk on screen to fit in the image the sensor that’s capturing the image inside the camera is actually larger therefore showing more.
@@MovieUniversity I know that. what I'm saying is that it would be better not to leave any bars anywhere and cut the image to cover 16: 9, which is the standard in televisions. 😁
@@reviewplay1157 most of the mainstream projector is 4:3 XGA and also... is better to have whole walls 4:3 filled with pictures rather than just 16:9 in the center...

It looks like they will finally be bringing the DTS audio mix to Disney plus. What are your thoughts?
About dang time!! This has been a long time coming. The team at DTS is very small and so polite, I’m genuinely very happy for them.
@Movie University I did hear a rumor that it's lossy. Originally they said it would be the full-range audio mix and not the near-field mix. We'll have to wait and see. Maybe you can reach out to your contact for verification.
That’s a good idea.
It might be lossy because of bandwidth limitations. While steaming is improving, it’s still not on par with physical.
DTS responded, but they passed the buck over to Disney to answer it without giving me any info. "While we are eager to talk about expansion for DTS - we want to be respectful and careful with our partner relationships (Disney) and cannot speak for them. It may be best for you to reach out to Disney directly about DTS:X on Disney+."
BUT, another guy I'm friendly with in the industry who was at DTS until recently told me it would absolutely have to be lossy for the simple fact that the bandwidth just doesn't exist yet to stream good surround sound. Which made sense to me after he said that. I got a video on this channel talking about why physical is still better than streaming that covers this topic if you want to check it out sometime.
@@MovieUniversity Thanks for trying. Keep up the good work on the channel
Isn't Aquaman imax?
They outta do that with bluray too😤
Release the IMAX ratios on Blu-ray you mean? I got a source that says Marvel plans to release some of the movies on disc.
The sad part is unless 4K Blu Rays get more storage you will never see IMAX Enhanced on disc. Its simply too much data. I remember James Cameron fought FOX to get the ads off their 1080p Blu Ray because he wanted it in a fuller aspect ratio and needed the data.
Movies can be split on multiple discs such as the remastered 4K versions of the Lord of the Rings movies.
Thank you for your public service.
😊😊😊
Irony of imax no Christopher Nolan movie is on imax enhanced even though he is the one who mainstreamed imax into featured movies.
Well, unfortunately it’s the studios who are in control and Nolan has not done anything with Disney up to this point.
That said, the IMAX scenes are usually included in the physical media releases for Nolan’s movies anyway.🤷♂️

First we had 4.3 screens. Then we had 16.9 screens. Now we watch movies in 2.35:1.
Imax enhanced looks like a movie in 16.9?
Am I missing something here? 🤔🤣
It's a 1.43 or 1.9 image with the top and bottom chopped off to fit a 16x9 TV which is 1.85
Personally I don't feel this should be sold as IMAX Enhanced on Disney+ until it supports the DTS:X sound track it's very misleading to consumers.
This is addressed in the pin comment at the top.
It's not available in India 👎 whyyyyyy 😭😭
Laughing at all those people that bought a 2.35:1 AR screen for their home theaters.
Why? They can still watch the standard version as well as any other 2.35:1 film. Although, a 16:9 screen is by far the best for watching any content with any aspect ratio. That's why it came about in the first place.
Are there any IMAX certified TVs out there ?
Yes!

probably sony at the moment.
It's still a compressed as hell video stream, doesn't matter what the marketing said.
almost all video streamed is compressed because of internet speed limits with today's technology. not sure what you expect.
uh huh, which is why 4k blu rays are still the way to go.
No one is arguing that fact. On my channel I have advocated for people to continue to buy physical media quite a few times. However, the reality is that many more people stream movies than buy physical today.
@@MovieUniversity Wasn't talking to you, but yeah, you're right.
You wouldn't be able to tell the difference if it was a 4K disc or stream.

4k ultra HD is soooo much better sure you get more picture but the color and lighting is faded looking. Too much godamn blooming on home screens and HDR is gold colored trash. DOLBY vision gives it a vivid color and on oled screens the blacks contrast with light beautifully. I don't like this update on Disney plus. The dolby vision stuff is miles better
Interesting viewpoint. Thanks
Couldn’t disagree more. I did a direct comparison yesterday with DV on the ATV4K(the ATV4K forces DV on IMAX enhanced D+) and IMAX enhanced on the Sony A90J internal app. It was the Sony app with IMAX enhanced that looked sharper and more vibrant. DV by comparison was muted and looked extremely faded. The difference was jarring to say the least.

Not as good as the bluray.
Movie companies need to make their movies to work with home oled screens and remove the annoying crap black bars from blu rays because cinemas are dead to me. I won’t pay their prices and horrible food and if they keep making political statements and make me hate their actors I’ll not only stop buying their movies in cinemas I’ll go back to pirating their blu rays until they learn their lessons.
