It was criminal for Avengers Infinity War and Endgame for both to be filmed entirely in IMAX but to get released standard with black bars for home release
The avengers 4k blu-ray is imax its amazing and it would be nice to see infinity war and endgame in 4k imax.

I’ve seen all of those expect Transformers & First Man.
Fallout, Interstellar & Into Darkness are my favorites.
Fallout has been one of the best looking movies for me over all plus I’m a fan over all of the franchise.
Interstellar & Into Darkness have top notch special effects along with a some of the best audio.
Not surprised that half of these are literally Christopher Nolan's films. I don't have a problem with that btw, that's really cool. I have Tenet on DVD, and that's in IMAX too.
The Last Knight is my favorite reference 4k disk to show off with. It literally has every kind of demo scene (CGI, live action, car chase, space, mix of CGI and live action). Even medieval scenes lol.
I totally forgot that this movie exists. LOL

The exciting thing about this for me was hearing you say you favor 3D over 4K for some of these. Just set up my home theater with projector and thought it would be all about 4k, and while I love the Atmos on UHD discs, I still think well done 3D is visually more impressive. Now I'm stocking up on those rare examples of 3D blu rays with Atmos (Mad Max etc.). Will pick up the Last Knight after this. As you guys suggest, there are high quality (critically acclaimed) movies, and then there are great home theater movies that look and sound great and show off your system. I would also like to see you do a top 10 3D blu rays video, even if 3D is going to disappear.

And it sounds from this video that you guys sometimes favor 3d over 4k, and having just set up my home theater and DLP projector, I'm finding the same thing. Well done 3d is still more visually impressive to me than 4k. Admittedly, my projector isn't a 5-10 grand true 4k, but a 1.5 grand Benq which upscales.
Well there's really a market for 4K and 1080p Blu-rays. But some are very noticeable improvements. But if you're upgrading from a 1080p to a 4K one it may vary. The difference may not be worth to upgrade or not. But spare change is really a great UA-camr for reviewing technical specifications for movies. I still buy 1080p Blu-ray movies because of the price and 4K for the quality and audio but both of them ofter superior quality over streaming.
The Dark Knight Rises is my favourite of the new trilogy. 1989 Batman is my favourite. Favourite IMAX 4k for me, is Fallout.
When you play a 4k blu Ray disc that has Imax content. Will the TV adjust for it automatically?

I was about to comment transformers last knight before you got to #1 lol. Love it or hate it the visual is outstanding in Imax 4k hdr.

Not really sure what a IMAX movie is on bluray. I have many of these movies and they seem to switch between formats. I have a projector with a widescreen and if I play these movies in 2:35 or whatever to fill my widescreen but then are to tall in imax so I have to play them in 16:9 so when they are IMAX they fit the screen. Is that right?
Will we ever get full imax movies instead of just a few shots here and there? You would think that there more demand for that. Do you know why this is?

Yeah apparently the last 2 Avengers movies were fully shot in IMAX, it just sucks they were not given the full imax ratio for the home releases instead thy got the letterbox 2.40.1
comes down to the cameras, especially if we're talking about genuine full 1.43:1 IMAX. Super loud and bulky. But IMAX has just announced that they're working on a new line of cameras (finally) to workaround this issue. The current ARRI IMAX digital counterparts (the ones used in DUNE) could, in theory, be used to shoot an entire movie but they still don't reach the quality of IMAX film cameras

So many movies were released in IMAX cinemas but when they arrive on Blu-ray they come in standard aspect ratio with black bars. 🤢🤮🤮🤮

I’d happily pay more for IMAX especially if it’s run throughout the length of the film. Didn’t even know Avengers last 2 films were filmed that way? The 4K disc pic quality were quite disappointing IMO.

What qualifies for a IMAX scene thou ? Does it have to be filmed using an IMAX film camera or it can be any digital camera like the Alexa just without the black bars ?

Imax Enhanced has even less support on disc from the studios didn't back it up - despite massive support from home cinema manufacturers. Dark Knight Imax sequences knocked it out of the park for me, I remember when they showed the first 10 mins in the cinema it was jaw dropping. There is an Imax bluray of Transformers Age of Extinction film itself was poor but Imax stuff was v impressive but they didn't move it over to 4K release sadly.
I’ve just re-watched The Expanse from Amazon Prime in 4K and a 120” screen and it’s not IMAX but it’s “full-screen” in 4K and the space cinematography is amazing.

Batman films don’t have the imax on iTunes. But they do have Dolby Vision which the discs don’t

i find mad max fury road 4k version and doctor sleep to both have superb visuals and mind blowing atmos. i use fury road opening where hes just escaped from being captured with my atmos testing.

Hate the 4:3 aspect ratio but do love seeing the full image on my tv so I'll give Snyder props for that and I can't wait for the Blu-Ray release of the JL Snyder cut
Dunkirk is phenomenal. It's a figure it yourself type movie. My favorite of his releases.
1917 is a better war movie than Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk war movie

I know it's not uhd bluray but there is also Spiderman Far from home and homecoming on Imax enhanced streaming services. It's funny you make this video now as i bought myself an 85" Samsung qled for xmas and the black bars seem enormous. So much so that I've been looking for variable aspect ratio content, I've purchased every single one of these on 4k over the past couple of months plus A beautiful planet. My absolute favourite being Aquaman, I'm just waiting for Paramount and Sony pictures to release 100 plus Imax enhanced UHDs in 2021 like they promised.

Lion King, Joker aren’t IMAX. Yet Aquaman is. None of them shot on IMAX cameras. What makes Aquaman special?
Aquaman, Marvel movies and MI6 are shot with full sensor width and height. It’s called Opengate. And IMAX has a trademark over these scenes and will play theatrically with that aspect ratio in IMAX theatres only. You can crop these scenes to 2.35:1 without cutting off heads.
Joker, Knives Out etc are shot entirely in the cropped sensor 1.85:1 (DCI Flat)
These movies are shot in a way that you CANNOT crop these to 2.35:1 scope without cutting off heads. And IMAX doesn’t have agency over this because all theatres will play it that way.
Some exceptions which are cropped+IMAX for the entire runtime are Skyfall, 1917 and Tomorrowland. These never became available to home media.
Exactly! People gets exited when they saw IMAX but don't realized most of these films were shot with the new Arri 65mm camera and IMAX basically called their camera, here's the link if anyone wants to read more about the digital IMAX camera: www.arrirental.com/en/cameras/alexa-65. These cameras has full sensor that display aspect ratio of 2.11:1. Some of the other so-called IMAX films like 1917 were shot with Arri Mini which has aspect ratio of 1.89:1, they masked out the top and bottom when shown on regular 2.39:1 screen. Only a few films shot with the real IMAX 65mm cameras, for example, Nolan's films.
@@Bluboy30 Yeah lol it’s mostly marketing. I can shoot 16:9 “IMAX” from an iPhone and add letterboxed bars to my own videos and alternate between fullscreen and letterbox.
Adding trademark to an extra bit of open matte is absurd yet I’m fascinated by it. I like IMAX nevertheless haha

Last Knight and Aquaman look insane in 3D. I’m getting into buying 4k movies digitally on my Apple TV to save some space. I don’t see much of a difference between the disc. I only buy 3D movies.
I am glad that there are few Imax titles out there . I ofcourse love the picture quality,but i HATE the switching aspect ratios. That switching is irritating for folks like myself with 2,35:1 aspect ratio.
I prefer 1:85 or 1:78 aspect. I myself am not a black bar fan.
@@mr_movieguru my point was that you do not have black bars when you have a cinemascope screen and an anamorphic lens. Then you get the whole picture and use of every pixel.

Inception was a missed opportunity, it should've had IMAX shots but it doesn't!

I watched some behind-the-scenes videos of Inception prior to buying it on 4K and I'm pretty sure I saw a guy using an IMAX camera while filming the hallway fight scene. Could've just been a screen test and then for whatever reason they decided not to use it. Was then pretty disappointed when I got the 4K disc and there were no IMAX scenes, lol.
@@mr.rapter4517 apparently they shot some footage in 5 perf 65mm but i cant tell. probably just for special effects like a lot of other movies
Hey Tony Stark I respect you dude. But you are missing the point of his attentions for the film. His reasoning for not using IMAX was that he thought the dreams needed to look real as possible, so that meant shooting in 35mm and some in 65mm.
Hi Shane i am surprised you find Dunkirk a bad watchable movie i think it is different for English/European viewers it was a major event in WW2 1940 and didnt involve american troops unlike Private Ryan which is also a superb movie
Too bad this is limited to blu rays. Christmas Chronicles 2 on z Netflix was shot competely in IMAX and, while inconsistent, is often visually spectacular.

When Av recivers say they support imax, what does that means when imax isn't a sound but a picture quality.
Johnny Jones: It's both. Like DD and DTS before it, (although DTS was only for sound),but good luck finding any discs with it. I suppose they include it for the eventual release of said discs with the codec. Like most things that are manufactured, they like to add "stuff" that you may or may not use or want, just to make it look impressive to the average consumer. My understanding is that you can set up your system in a Imax configuration and have a matrixed, instead of a discrete soundstage when using it. I haven't read enough on it to have a full understanding as of this time, since it hasn't been fully been embraced. There are a few reviews of AVR's on youtube that explain this better. G
I dont know the criteria for being called imax and getting on the list, but seeing as Aquaman is on here, and that is not shot on imax camera, and only uses full screen, you can add:

Pacific rim

There is very little in the way of movies with IMAX. Maybe less than 20 hollywood films on disc. Not exactly sure I haven't counted but it's not many. So having side bars only comes up a couple times a year. It's not a big deal.

Yeah, it switches to IMAX as soon as they open the hatch. Probably the most effective use of the format I've ever seen.

I just wish they had Imax on the final pyramid scene. It will be spectacular. And how about Interstellar? I think it is better Imax film than Tenet.

Obviously we have a messed up grading here. 5/10=average. Not 7/10. That means everything 7-10/10 is compressed, like a 7.5 is really a 6/10, and a 9.5 is really a 9/10. Really confuses because then it's not clear. It's also clear we need a 3d 4k HDR hehee
I have a 16x9 screen and I'm at the point where I wish all movies had the option to view them in 1.85:1 at home, because 99% of people who watch movies outside the theater have 16x9 screens!

Great atmos staff in interstellar did I miss something, I thought nolan is not into atmos, just 5.1 dts. ? Joker was not shot in imax format ?to be fair looks better than most of the films on your list, and it's presented in full aspect ratio all the time.

Interstellar is definitely my number one. The opening scene from Dark Knight is amazing as well. I watched Aquaman the other day but my TV isn't very good at HDR and it's a bit small but it also looked crazy...
I think I watched Fallout on Netflix... or some streaming service. First one I'd watched since number two at the cinema. Loved it. I've added it to my list.
Oh men, when you do have a tv for it, Aquaman is awesome. Hdr is just great.
Heard that Interstellar is similar to the normal BluRay. I compared the ITunes 4K HDR and its pretty similar to my BluRay.

@@leapingtortoise I saw screengrabs from the Interstellar BluRay 1080p vs 4k BluRay and the difference wasnt huge. Did you test them yourself?
@@Milan-cf1xe I think there's a bump in detail (although my eyesight isn't great), particularly in the IMAX scenes. I think HDR and wide colour gamut do more (at least for me) which make the picture better, although it can be touch darker
I choose to watch all my 4K movies full screen except for IMAX as I cant haha . I dont need black bars! I really enjoyed Transformers The Last Knight, it was FUN! but I didn't like how the screen aspect ratio kept on changing rapidly all the time to 3 different sizes. I would prefer to watch it on full screen. I dont mind watching the other IMAX movies how they were but I still just prefer to watch all my 4K Movies full screen.
Here I am waiting and trying to score a PS5 just so I can finally jump to 4k and enjoy some 4k Blu-ray movies...

Tron legacy and hunger games catching fire are in imax but just the blu-ray version not 4k.
I missed IMAX in the title and was expecting to see Christopher Nolan's The Prestige in list but no. I'd still be interested in your thoughts on the 4K The Prestige? Wonderful movie and The Illusionist came out in the same year, 2006, I bet that was not a coincidence, more likely spying.
Except for films that are not related to one another storywise, any of you feels cheapen when a physical disc box art says "N-film/movie collection." It sounds like a pirated movie and it does not look good when displayed on the shelf. For me, I think its better to put "Saga" or any other distinguishing title in the covers, like the Hunger Games Saga, Star Trek: the Kelvin Timeline, Pirates of the Carribean: The adventures of Jack Sparrow etc. They could also put "Complete Series"/"Complete Chronicle" when its a TV series. I have no problem if its in the reverse box art so as not to alienate the other buyers

Nolan movies come with DTS Master Audio 5.1 unfortunately

@@luisd7636 Atmos is not compatible with film projection so he doesn't want to give the digital presentations of his movies any advantages. You can't pair it with 35/70mm prints, so he wants to follow that.

Christopher Nolan is doing us a huge disservice. By not giving us dolby atmos with his movies
That is Nolan's personal artistic decision. Still, his movies tend to have solid 5.1 audio mixes, including Oppenheimer (which would definitely be top 10, maybe even No. 1, if this list were redone today).

"Fun Fact" I had an in-person conversation with an OSCAR Winner, remaining nameless, in 2019, who worked on Dark Knight Rises/Nolan Movies.... We both agree DKR is a better/more epic film than DK, ...but that's just our opinion.
Even though I loved the TDK, I saw TDKR at the first show, midnight the night before release on true imax at smithsonian with a full crowd of full on enthusiasts. It's my fave moviegoing experience and I doubt it will ever be topped
@@shahryarrizvi1 Fantastic experience I'd imagine! Although TDK appears to be the most loved amongst fans, for me it goes against the grain of most Nolan Movies i.e. it's quite a linear timeline, unlike BB and TDKR... if I recall correctly?

@@therealshanelee Yes sir! The first Pacific Rim 4k Blu Ray is in full screen, 1:85 ratio, (no black bars). I remember seeing it in IMAX 3D, it was mind blowing! Blu Ray 3D, equally as incredible. BTW, huge fan of your channel, just had to throw this one in there because it's my favorite 3D or 4K full screen transfer.
