    Hi Techno Dad, may I know what's the audio bitrate of Atmos that you compared with IE and DTSX? If not mistaken, streaming service offer much lower bitrate compared to physical media. Does this lower audio birate cause any softer or weaker performance? I'm not sure, hope to learn more information from your sharing. Thanks.

    Listening to a streaming Dolby atmos vs listening to the same track on dolby atmos from the physical disc always seem more dynamic on my physical discs! Really difficult to be able to compare every kind of tracks from different sources! Either Apple TV 4K vs Netflix (in app tv from lg) or even roku and other plugin sticks have different sound coming out of my slim 7.2 marantz receiver! Everything is plugged in in 5.1.2 setup! But any way I’m listening it’s always amazing to have atmos/ Dts x! Wish I could demo IMAX enhanced!

    Good video I know that I am not crazy when I think i hear more of the height channels with atmos than dtsx. One theory I have is that with dtsx the main event is the object based decoding. Dtsx actually doesn't require height channels to be activated where as dolby reverts back to channel based decoding when the heights are deactivated. The Dtsx is easier to hone in on the sound source where as atmos seems more smeared together. But then again I am using bouncy house upfiring speakers so that could be a factor but dtsx and atmos do sound really different.

    Always preferred DTS to Dolby; DTS sounds louder and more rumble but above all somehow center channel sounds better. I wish DTS:X was more in movies but Atmos currently ruling the world, at least in the home cinema.
    Also it seems there are barely any movies right now with proper IMAX Enhanced, meaning correct aspect ratio and DTS:X audio track, both are important as that completes the IMAX Enhanced.

For ages I'm being told by the vidrophiles and audiophiles that we need to calibrate our screens and speakers to get the picture and sound that the director intended, and here we have Technodad checking out different sound formats that sound different. So which one is the one that the director intended it to be? So if technodadrefers the imax enhanced because it has more bass isn't he breaking that cardinal rule?

    Hey Techno Dad, i have Denon x6500h home amp, i couldnt do the audessey calibration due to my amp being setup in a cage in garage away from lounge and run an optical cable from LG Oled C8 to amp. So i have the following questions please:
    1. Klipsch Speaker with atmos, 9 speaker setup
    2. My output setting from TV is set to internal speaker and optical
    3. Input sources into Oled are-
    a) PS4 HDR Pro
    b) Apple TV 4K
    c) Xbox 360
    d) Amazon TV
    When viewing my denon amp and check info it only states PCM 48mhz for sound(refer to screenshot)
    Wanted to no why its not showing atmos/dolbyX when audio is being output? What is best way to calibrate the audessey mic, as cable is to short and need to source extension of about 20/30m to run it to amp from centre?

      Techno Dad Thanks, i manage to get 2/3 15m extensions female to male, found it myself these installers totally useless and now considering moving amp back into lounge or proper cat6 converter end to end, (suggested by someone) you reckon that can resolve the atmos dilemma? Will run from LG oled C8 arc port to Amp arc in and leave Ps4Pro and Apple tv 4k directly into TV 🤔

    • @derekmaynard5619

      Dale Hair. If you haven't found your solution yet this may help.
      Plug whatever you playing the movie through the amp and not the back of the TV. So, tv source where it suggests and then ps4 in the back of AVR. This could be the issue you are having. I went through the same issue with Denon 67000h and the roku that has Atmos. The only way I could get it to display correctly was directly through the amp and setting the Roku to pass through plus I selected Dolby formate. Took forever and plenty of research but finally!!
      Also, playing Netflix, Disney plus HBO Max all through roku and not through the TV apps. Hipe this helps.

    In general I think surrounds should be for ambience and make the soundstage big. They should not be distracting. Sure if a chopper IS over your head it should be sound there. But should blend in with everything and be noticable except for when you turn them off then you should notice a big difference. IMHO.

    • @dalechalfont112
      @dalechalfont112 4 роки тому

      But you can reduce the levels of the surrounds, you could use bipole or dipole speakers for less direct sound. You can position them above headheight or angle them slightly past the listener. There are about 50 things yoy could do to make surround speakers less direct and distracting. But a non discrete mis ruins the surround for everyone.
      That is a terrible idea.
      I don't have 11 speakers and 2 subwoofers so I can have ambience.
      You could have a 5.1 mix with a bunch of reverb in the mix or even added as an eq effect or just use dipole speakers mounted above ear height to get a bunch of reverb and ambience.
      Discrete mixes are for discrete sound. You could slap -4db on all surround and ceiling channels and bam, not distracting. I don't think they should cripple the mixes.

    I'd say if height channel is important to you, stick to Atmos. For instance, if you watch a lot of action movies, with lots of flying things and you don't think it's a distraction, stick to Atmos. It's really interesting because I've switched to Atmos almost as soon as it came out, and I've been enjoying it since then. It feels like something is missing if I go back to the 'normal' sound, even for playing a concert, it's that much more enjoyable with the addition of the height channels. In terms of the low rumble or the high high, they almost don't apply to my situation as my living space/entertainment room is the same room, it isn't an ideal or dedicated enough setup. It's making sense of the situation and getting the best from the layout I have. I also have neighbors to worry about! 😂 I can't be blasting my system all the time or they will complain. Ideally in a perfect world, I certainly would love to have a more dedicated home theater. I believe the majority of people out there are in the same situation. It's great the technology is out there and we have choices. But always chasing after the latest tech or number crunching wouldn't necessarily be in proportion to the resulting enjoyment. It's important to know the pros and cons and understand what's the best possible outcome given the limitation.

    One thing to consider is the ATV4K usually outputs at a much lower volume. You should level match the output between your Blu-ray player and the ATV with an SPL meter to have a fair comparison. Between this fact and the fact you are comparing a lossy Atmos stream to a lossless DTSX/IMAX Enhanced Track I am not surprised you did not prefer the Atmos mix.

    • @TechnoDad
      @TechnoDad  4 роки тому

      Even though they weren’t level matched (I tried but there wasn’t any way to get a good “average” level during the scene as the scene was so dynamic). I couldn’t play pink noise to level match as there’s no way for me to do that with the ATV4K. Anyway, even though they weren’t level matched, Atmos height channels were MUCH louder than the other two. Any thoughts?

    • @marcalvarado1915
      @marcalvarado1915 4 роки тому

      If you use your Xbox One X to play the disc you could level match the ATV4K with it by using a pink noise track on the UA-cam app of both devices ua-cam.com/video/WJ9Go1PnAVA/v-deo.html. There could still be a discrepancy but I would bet it would get you close. As far as the heights in the Atmos track sounding too loud I don’t really have an explanation. Maybe check to make sure the trims for the heights on both of the inputs in your AVR match? I don’t own a Denon (yet) but I know some AVRs can have different volume settings saved on different inputs so maybe that would explain the difference you are hearing.

    • @marcalvarado1915
      @marcalvarado1915 4 роки тому

      One other suggestion would be to use the Xbox to playback the Atmos track via the Vudu app as well as using it to play the disc. That would eliminate any other potential discrepancy assuming the Vudu app outputs at the same volume as the disc drive in the Xbox.

    The sound engineer will mix how he thinks it should sound with his specific equipment in his recording studio, which might not be the same setup and room you have. If the bass is lower in Atmos then use the bass control and raise it 3dB to equal the other formats bass kevel. Or just increase the subwoofer level. If Atmos over the head content are too pronounced, then lower the volume level on those top speakers. Most AVR's can do individual speaker level adjustments. If the other formats have too subtle over head content then increase the top speakers level. The sound level controls are there to be adjusted to what sounds the best to your own ears. Denon has 4 memories to store different setups of speaker levels to be used with different sounding content to suit your preference of best audio quality. There should at least be bass and treble controls as a minimum on every AVR and preferably also top speaker level adjustments.

    According to Audioholics, IMAX Enhanced does not route to the subwoofer, so I am thinking this is why the bass on IMAX Enhanced is more pronounced. Here is their video here: ua-cam.com/video/aYZG-Jw4bqo/v-deo.html
    As for me, with my ATMOS enabled 9.2.4 Shockwafe, i get so much bass that I literally feel it through the house, and I never have to go beyond volume 30, which is not even one third the volume, Perhaps, I am lucky with the room acoustics.

      IMAX Enhance is like a code that’s formatted on the disc that allows it to overwrite your AVr calibration settings. I just purchased the Pioneer SC-LX904 and on the setting you can adjust limitations for IMAX Enhance. I’m not sure if other brands offer you to limit IMAX Enhance futures, but I know Pioneer allows you to. It’s good to know your speaker limitations, so that you can adjust the settings bc IMAX Enhance will boost your speaker levels. The last thing you want is blown speakers.

    You know , I just purchased this Marantz SR5013 and I already had an Onkyo HT-R693. If I had it to do over I would not have bought the Marantz. I have tried to convince myself it was better. It has preouts which is the only reason I wanted another avr. The Marantz remote operations do not hold a candle to the Onkyo's. If I had never had the Onkyo it would be different because I would not know but I do and its eating me up. The Onkyo has dolby atmos and supposedly the Marantz does to but you could not prove it by mine. The Onkyo worked flawlessly in every way. Next step for me is to sell my marantz because I am very dissappointed in it. I only paid $250 for the Onkyo and it is a far better receiver in my opinion than the Marantz.

    • @randyhunt1581

      I would have to say definately. The atmos was perfect. I was very happy with the way the Onkyo sounded. It was 95 watts per channel 2 driven and the Marantz is 100. No difference in volume. 5 watts is not enough to notice a difference. The Marantz sounds good but it does not sound as good as the Onkyo. That may possibly be because something is not right and that may be with my setup. I went by the guided setup just like the Onkyo has so I do not know why. The audussy is definately than Onkyo's but that is no help with the problems I'm having. Which is no video control with the marantz remote at all. I have 1 hdmi going from arc on tv to monitor1 arc on marantz. I have another hdmi from blueray to #3 port on avr labeled blueray. Can not understand why no video operation with remote. I don't know if there is something on my tv I need to change. It is set to CEC. That's all I got and I'm very frustrated at spending the money that I really had no business spending to begin with. I now have 2 receivers and need to either figure out what the deal is with the marantz or sell it and never buy marantz again.There is no reason the setup should be so difficult that most people can never enjoy the functions of their avr. Who knows how to use every single aspect of their avr on new ones. At least the remote should switch back and forth from tv to any other input. Mine does not.

    Can't stand home or theatrical object based audio. Personally, I think it's nothing but a stupid gimmick. And it's a shell of what it's supposed to be as truly implemented in a theater in the home environment FWIW. To me It's just louder like a wall of noise from all over. Even at the theater though I saw 1917 in Atmos and was not impressed at all. And I like loud, but this was wayyy too loud, like well in excess of 100dB for most of the movie, it was just painful. It was mostly just overly loud with a wall of noise coming from all over with no precise localization of sound whatsoever, there was no meaning or purpose to it and the auditorium rattled as a result from loosened insulation from the rumbling. The screen channels were totally overwhelmed and the L/R channels also sounded like they were spreading half way up to the sides making it sound very odd and unnatural sounding. That was at a "flagship" Dolby Cinema AMC. Late last year I saw Midway at the same AMC in their "standard" theater which was presented in DS 7.1, the theatrical TrueHD 7.1 equivalent and it was miles better in precise imaging with natural surround enhancement when it called for it that matched the on screen action. I was totally immersed into the film. Yet with 1917 the theatrical atmos sound overpowered the film completely. And mind you the speakers in the standard AMC theater were total garbage but you could tell the mix was awesome. I bought Midway on UHD BD and the THD 7.1 bedtrack was just like what I heard at the theater but better on my 7.1 HT. Now I haven't heard DTS:X but I'd imagine it's the same junk given DTS just follows whatever Dolby does like a good lap dog that they usually are. But in fairness to DTS I will admit whatever they do copy from Dolby they tend to improve upon quite a bit, case in point DCA and DTS-ES compared to DD and DD EX back in the day. I do think TrueHD beats DTS-HD though, shame BD largely ditched THD 5.1 for DTS-HD 5.1 but I'd imagine Dolbys licensing greed had a big part in this. Just that for me there was nothing wrong with and still is nothing wrong with Lossless channel based audio. I bet most mid level HT users still rock their excellent 5.1 or 3.1 systems and the mainstream market is watching on these 2 and 3 channel soundbars now with fake Atmos and fake surround. Object based or even discrete does nothing a good Lossless LPCM 2.0 DS mix won't do for the mainstream soundbar users anyway lol. I have always been a firm believer that more channels doesn't automatically mean better. I think a really good channel based mix is still great. And all these new object based only focused pre-pros and receivers have been stripped of all the wonderful DSP options and listening modes optimized for music, older matrix 4 channel encoded movies, standard stereo or even old Mono stuff. There was a proper mode for everything, now Dolby consolidated everything into some awful generic DS upmixer which is such a stupid name also given the continued use of the original DS format on 2 channel transmission limited platforms like YT to this day or when chromecasting an HBO/Showtime show from their app to your TV! So I agree with one of the comments here that modern day big budget surround mixing is starting to get overzealous, it should be strictly ambience, special effects, a big scene, flyover etc. What's happening now is all these channels are competing with the 3 most important channels which is the screen array during a large portion of these movies and the mainstream has complained about harder and harder to hear dialogue as a result. Part of that is also exacerbated by the fact that movies sound best on fully loaded horn speakers which have unmatched dynamic capability, efficiency, lack of distortion and dialog clarity. While the mass market products use box and cone dynamic type speakers with soft dome tweeters at home unless you buy can afford or have room space for JBL Synthesis or Klipsch Heritage/Professional horns which have clarity and dynamic range that cone and woofer box speakers can't dream of matching on movies. I will say that coaxial designs like KEF or Tannoy come very close and are a great alternative to horns, they are certainly better than soft dome tweeters for dialog. Anyway, yeah I think OBA sucks big time. I'm not leaving 7.1 anytime soon.

Let's not make a video with just subjective thoughts, tell us what went it to the different formats and how it may appeal to your audience.

    This "IMAX Enhanced" CRAP is ALL about AUDIO ONLY & Nothing regarding the picture FORMAT. Sure it's in 4K. You can get 4K anywhere to purchase on most streaming services. This IMAX Enhanced DOES NOT show movies in the original IMAX Theater picture aspect ratio of 1.43:1. The movies purchased such as Spiderman, Alpha, Life, etc. are still all shown in 2:35:1 widescreen. This is NOT the IMAX Theater format aspect ratio. So I feel totally ripped off on this bullcrap "Imax Enhanced" baloney. IMAX & FandangoNow are basically LYING to customers in regards to the PICTURE ASPECT RATIO. FALSE ADVERTISING 100%! THIS IMAX ENHANCED BULLCRAP IS ALL ONLY ABOUT AUDIO ASPECTS OF IMAX AND NOT THE ORIGINAL IMAX PICTURE SIZE. Shameful. And I have a SOny XBR that the movies are suppose to work on and have downloaded the stupid worthless Privilege app that has NO MOVIE to purchase anymore and has only previews on that app now. So this is all bullcrap when it comes to any "IMAX Enhanced" picture FORMAT (as they advertise & show in their previews). THE MOVIES ARE NOT SHOWN IN THE IMAX THEATER ASPECT RATIO OF 1.43:1. BUYER BEWARE!

    IMAX Enhanced is crap! It messes your original bass management and room EQ settings like changing your crossover to 70Hz. It's nothing more than a new gear/media certification scam like THX was... If you have it - disable it!
