I wonder about using the regular clear antiquing wax (also expensive, but you need such a little bit) and, instead of the mica powder, eyeshadow---which is really cheap at $Tree. I have used the eyeshadow by itself on paper to add pink cheeks to some cheeky cherubs! See how you inspire us all to think outside the box, Deirdre!
Thank you for this tip. I have used shoe polish for a long time and also use the shoe brush to finish up my waxed pieces. Works great. I also use rub and buff with the shoe brush.
I guess it really depends on where you are buying. Rub n Buff on Amazon in the US is like $8-10 dollars for a single tube and $20-25 for a pack of 4! Plus Michael's carries it for like $12 regular (I got mine on a 60% off weekend for $5) So while I love this idea in theory, unless you happen to have shoe polish (and I don't know anyone who still polishes their shoes) buying the ingredients for the hack would cost WAY more and I'm not sure about the quality or longevity.
But if I already have most of these items, then a $6 tin of shoe polish would be awesome to make small amounts of multiple colours, instead of spending 6-10$ on one coloured tube. But I love finding recipes to make my own supplies so I personally love these diy recipes 😊
Thank you for this money saving technique. I did not have shoe polish but some Johnson Paste wax in my craft room and it worked perfectly! I will make this my go to technique for adding a bit of glimmer to projects! Thanks again!
Another cost effective trick is to go to the Dollar Tree and pick up some of their both loose eye shadow and the compacted kind works too and use that for mica powder. I use both and the eye shadow works great. Thanks for sharing and have a lovely day.
“Elise in the attic” here on UA-cam first came out with this DIY 5 years ago.. if you use your finger to apply the rub n buff it turns out a lot better , because it only applies to the raised areas.
@@PawsPortraits I haven't totally submerged the items. I clean with a damp cloth around where I used the wax to make sure I don't remove the coloring, to be on the safe side. I use mine on Sun catchers, vases and candle holders.
I read through the comments which were helpful but my question is will this diy recipe work on drawer pulls and knobs? I have some that i want to change the colour on and I too live in Canada so this recipe is very appealing to me as well!! I would love to find a diy for my metal drawer hardware!
I love this idea. I have wanted to try rub and buff but have never been able to afford it. I love how the mica powder and the cream turned out too. I think it's my favorite. Do they sell clear shoe polish?
I found that rub n buff disconnected a color I want desperately, so this might be my saving grace. The color is Patina, so now I need to find a similar mica or eyeshadow color to blend with the polish to replicate its effect. Suggestions?
Thanks for sharing this! I stopped short of buying the rub-n-buff because of the expense and the fact I couldn’t decide on just one colour ! Question: I’m guessing that one couldn’t do any reverse modpodge Graphics where this has been applied? Have you attempted that process?
Thank-you appreciate the info...I have some rub n buff and was thinking of adding some mica powder to the original for different colors as i need a olive green,i wonder if that would be better than the shoe polish or just the same.Has anyone used future floor polish as a top coat ? ,ive heard that it may work and still keep the shine...hope so
Hi! Sounds like a great idea, thankyou for sharing it! What about the smell of the shoe polish, does it ever go away? and can things be wash and will it stay put?
If you used a shiny metallic gold (or whichever color you like) eyeshadow instead of the mica powder it would be brighter than the batch she made. Dollar Tree & bargain stores have inexpensive eyeshadow.
Will this version be a successful alternative to Buff n Rub for adding color to glass etching? If it will work well for me, I can save a lot of money. Thanks
I think what you mean to say is, it sounds like a waste of YOUR time. If it gives her or anyone else, the results they want, and is cheaper than buying it (remember, not everyone lives in the US) then it's well worth THEIR time.

This sounds like a great idea too!
I've used eyeshadow and blushes too! So much cheaper, and wow, the colors!
I’ve mixed pearlescent eyeshadows with clear DIY wax to make a couple of custom colors and it worked - and held up - beautifully. 🙂
@@jodilea144 Thanks--I was wondering how well it might hold up!
@@ShadyV Good to know I'm not the only out there with makeup on my DIYs!
Nice for subtle look. Rub n buff more vibrant

What a fantastic idea Deirdre! Thank you for all your clever, budget saving ways, of doing things.
Glad it was helpful!
I have most of the standard rub-n- buffs, but this is a great hack to get some more amazing colors than just the basics!
This is awesome. I wish I knew this 20 years ago. It is expensive so thank you. I would love to see a comparison of the 2.
You and me both!

Where we’re at, a tube is $6.99 at Hobby Lobby, and a dollar fifty or so more at Michael’s.
Deirdre, like me, is living in Canada. Here the prices are almost double than it is in the US.

Yuppers! In Canada, you'd think you were paying for a gold bar, not a tiny tube of mica and wax... sigh...

Wonderful!
Wow, amazing results, so clever. Can't wait to try this. TFS
Thanks so much 😊
It does work better just on your finger, then it will hit the raised areas. I like to use the clear furniture wax a bit more
Yes fun to experiment

Thank you! Exactly what I had been wanting to figure out or find; where someone truly clever and creative (like you) already had. All smiles now.
Glad I could help!
@@OurUpcycledLife Hi, wondering if this would stay on glass after engraving? Wouldn't it wash off?
Golly! I just bought some gold rub and buff yesterday. Thanks for the heads up.
Enjoy!

Wonderful idea! I especially liked what it did to he old brass. Thank you for sharing. Julie 🥰

Thank you!!! We don't get Rub n Buff in South Africa and I haven't found anything similar to it. So glad to have found this video!

Love this can't wait to try it.
I use the rub'n buff to color my etched glass pieces.
Thank you so much.

Did it work for your etched glass?
@@eugenet1336 It worked great. I've used it on several glass etchings and have sold a few pieces. 👍
@@lyndarandall211 what happens when the glass is washed ? Does the colour disappear ?

Use a shoe shine brush to polish up your pieces.
Good idea!
Great idea
Has anyone tried to make this with candle/oil OR maybe with just coconut oil? I really want to go experiment now! ❤this hack!
I haven’t but certainly worth experimenting
Did this with my combat boots and now I’m in Leavenworth.
😂😂
I’m definitely making some of this Deidre! This is going to be so much better on my budget. Thanks for this craft recipe!

Yes, it would definitely work to add some Micah powder into your rubber buff
Hi! Sounds like a great idea, thankyou for sharing it! What about the smell of the shoe polish, does it ever go away? and can things be wash and will it stay put?
I don’t find there is a smell
WOW 😲
Clever. But it didnt seem to look as vibrant as Rub & Buff. Got some Tim Holtz foundry wax but havent tried yet.

I have not tried that
Could you use Minwax Paste Finishing Wax?
I have not use that product, but it would be worth a try
Could you use a KILZ sealing clear wax instead of shoe Polish?
I have not use that product but it’s worth a try
Can you apply clear coat or clear epoxy on top of this rub n buff?
Yes you can!
Only thing, I adore the smell of rub n buff
I bought readymade metallic wax but it comes off easily and isn't permanent on most surfaces, any tips?😢
Hmmm not sure
Can you use it on glass? Does it wash off?
It will wash off if you scrub
Hobby Lobby sells the tubes of Rub "N Buff for $6-7.
🇨🇦
FYI. Your Amazon link for the shoe polish is different than what you use n the video.
Yes that one is discontinued
Please add your finished products so we can see what we are going for.
Can it go on etched glass
Yes, I can
Can you make it with clear wax?
Yes
Does it leave projects smelling like shoe polish?
No not at all
Tfs❤
You are so welcome
it never actually dries and becomes permanent, right?
Yes it will
Looks like a colored antiquing wax
Is this permanent or do you have to reapply after you clean the item?
Permanent
It doesn't look as good as rub n buff but I guess it is at least pretty cheap.
So basically any kind of wax and Mica powder
Yes that will work
