    "Once, we were all dressed by someone else. Parents picked out a T-shirt; the school dictated what colour our trousers should be. But at some point, we were granted the opportunity to discover who we might be in the world of clothes. We had to decide for ourselves about collars and necklines, fit, colours, patterns, textures and what goes (or doesn’t) with what. We learnt to speak about ourselves in the language of garments. Despite the potential silliness and exaggeration of sections of the fashion industry, assembling a wardrobe is a serious and meaningful exercise."

      as tough as it may be, you can dress nicely even on a low budget.
      what matters is the thought behind it.
      there's also a lot of dyi out there that you can do or thrift shops to buy some unique items in.

    Clothes are an excellent expression of our own style, but we must make sure that the style we are portraying actually comes from within us, and not from a marketing ad, which is telling us that we need this piece of clothing to feel good our accepted.

      Yes I am a stylist and can go on and on about dressing for yourself. Clothes are tool and extension of your personality and value. That's why we love Audrey Hepburn so much she's an example of that she is what she present herself to be.

    I couldn't agree more. Lots of people claim they "don't care how they look" or that they just "wear whatever they want." But in actuality, this couldn't be further from the truth. They aren't walking around naked, or in a burlap sack; their fashion choices are very much deliberate and meaningful. If you're a jeans and t-shirt guy, you're messaging with that outfit. When you say you "just wear what's comfortable" you're not being honest with yourself - a toga is comfortable. You just wear what's practical? Why not a jumpsuit?
    Choosing not to put a lot of thought into what you wear is a choice itself, with it's own implications. It generally means going with whatever your culture says is normal, messaging that you're down to earth and broadcasting a message of commonality with your fellows. Wearing casual clothes signals humility. Wearing shabby clothes signals a disinterest in social status and worldly concerns, implying a focus on other things.

    • @couch_philosoph3325
      @couch_philosoph3325 7 років тому +51

      digitalbrentable exactly. Of course there are peopls who put in more thought. But it would be a lie that they don't care at all. Noone would go in stained old clothes to a job interview. And i havent met someone who doesn't find sweatpants or something similar more comfortable than jeans, yet they would not wear it outside. Many women walk around at home without a bra on, because its so much more comfortable, but wouldn't do it outside. Also the guys who just wear a shirt and jeans, cause its comfortable wouldn't wear ridiculous looking clothes just because they are comfortable. Or would wear bright pink jeans even if they were the most comfortable

      or shows insecurity and or depression.
      really, there's so many subconscious reasons going on behind our clothing choices .
      I just see no reason why either dressing well or not should be ridiculed, both views are extreme.
      I see a lot of people equating dressing well with low intelligence and I honestly object.

    • @digitalbrentable

      I think I liked this video because it's given me a better insight into something that is pretty common to us all, but that I often get teased for. I generally dress flamboyantly and outlandishly, and I've never really understood why. Contrary to the dismissive 'attention seeking' explanation, which never really struck home, the explanation offered in this video really resonates: dressing strangely is a statement of identity, a message to others that I'm an unusual chap (or, perhaps, that I want them to think so).
      Anyway, a nice bonus is I now have a proper answer when I'm challenged on my peculiar attire; I can just admit it as a form of social messaging, same as the clothes worn by the person asking.

    • @zoareena
      @zoareena 7 років тому +31

      I think that just shows your'e confident enough to show the world your personality and taste.

      Yep you should be - unfortunately the world is assessing your wealth, discipline, self image, success, confidence every time you walk out the door - it's an unfair world. Putting yourself together is a basic life skill. If you don't know what you are doing you are not creating the 'like' effect in your audience. We admire and respect people who are well turned out. Clothes have language whether you like it or not.

    • @say66HELLO

    • @mouldyrhombus2227
      @mouldyrhombus2227 7 років тому +27

      say66HELLO I think the point is to wear what you like and be proud of who you are, then you attract the people who might share the same interests due to the appreciation of your style. Everybody gets judged, but at the same time everybody also judges. That doesn't have to be a bad thing, just a way to determine who you want to spend your time with. So don't feel self conscious, I'm sure your choice of wardrobe suits you well because it was picked by you. :)

    • @Toefoo100
      @Toefoo100 7 років тому +15

      The point of the video is to say that you should indeed waste your time and money for no real self satisfaction. That you should also be consumed by other people's interpretation of your choice of clothing.

    As a 6'2'' male with a shaved head, beard and a large, muscular physique (due to over 4 years of bodybuilding), people would assume me to be brutish, intimidating and quite simple.
    While this is certainly an aspect of my personality, I also happen to be be a very joyful, sarcastic and open individual. I therefore like to convey that by dressing in tops too large for me and wearing skin-tight jeans cuffed up comically high in order to show off my collection of colourfully silly socks.

    A good indicator is the extent to which a person rejects socially accepted fashion. A teenager wearing exclusively Nike or Adidas, to me suggests conformity, and a sense of self consciousness and/or fear of not fitting in. We see this in all age groups; it's generational adherence. Those who reject this are the ones most comfortable with their own bodies and minds.

    Our clothing choices reflect not only our currect self but what we strive to be, a mixture of traits that are congruent to the current self yet foreshadow our development and progress as human being . How can u show how elevated and above the frail you're ,how your mere existence on the physical plane is nothing more then a role of self-amusement in just a few piece of clothing .One must choose very wisely as such an issue is of grand importance of our selfimage and legacy.

    This is amazing, I never thought of clothes this way, and it makes so much sense now! Now I get why I am so nervous about clothes, especially on the first day of a particular school, meeting a personal music teacher for the first time, performing in a casually dressed performance (which means more options, more terror), and things like that while I dress like a peasant at home. My family doesn't care about how my hair is, or if I'm wearing the sweater I've worn for a week straight, or if I put on tight pants to make my legs more skinny-looking. They don't care, and then I don't care. It makes so much sense now, this is great!

    Why Mirrors Matter
    Hey guys
    As I was watching this video with my fellow student of life, we started digging a little deeper. Talking about the impact of seeing your reflection during a certain activity we hypothesized that this might have a stimulating effect on our self-image.
    Imagine playing the guitar or working on an essay and glancing in the mirror. Suddenly you have gained the perspective of an outsider. Might this create a clearer picture of who you are?
    Love from Antwerp

    One of the many best things I have done was learn how to dress. Learn the difference between style and fashion. As Yves Saint Laurent said " Fashions fade, style is eternal".
    Once you learn to dress with style you will be amazed at how many compliments you receive and even on how much better service you get when you go out, not to mention the extra amount of attention you get from the ladies. It's an easy thing to learn that pays big rewards and it's also fun. They amount of men you see walking around that dress like absolute slops is really sad. Even poor people in the 30's and 40's dressed very elegant.

      You don't understand the importance of genuine leather. It's not about how it looks or feels. If that was the case, golden jewelery could be made out of endless other substitutes that would resemble gold almost perfectly. The value is not in the outward appearance but the inward feeling it gives. Somewhere in the deep subconsciousness of you mind, an instinctual craving is nourished. In all humans there is a pleasure that comes from inflicting pain. The price to obtain, and difficulty required to obtain an object only further our contentment with that object. In conclusion we enjoy when our pleasure comes at the cost of anothers suffering, whether we like it or not. It is instinctual. We love to hunt, to kill.

    I shop at thrift shops and sometimes only at thrift shops and discount stores if they have special days like $1 clothing or half off tagged items. It takes patience on my part but so far I've replaced 80% of my old teenage wardrobe with clothes I'm proud to see myself in now which is more androgynous. I have always been aware of how I'm percieved in my clothing because I saw forst hand how my family were treated. My sister wore revealing clothing at a young age, had an eye for high fashion but stuck to things like Baby phat and G unit. She would get treated differently than I would. My grandma would dress me and tell me "I need to dress you like the Americanos so you can go far. You'll thank me one day." I didn't understand at the time but what she meant was that she was purposely dressing me to not look my culture. While other kids in my neighborhood wore tight apple bottom jeans, bandanas, crop tops, spaghetti string tops, things with hispanic flags printed on them with jordans, I was wearing Gap jeans, pastel button downs, and sketchers. I got into many summer activities and felt like an odd one out because no one else was like me.
    Now that I've grown up a bit, my style means alot. An interview, we dress to impress. A date is the same way. But my style isnt to hide who I am anymore. It's to embrace it.

    Clothes don't matter to my husband. T shirts and jeans is enough as long as he doesn't need to waste too much mental energy in covering up for society. After 15 years of marriage, I'm finally delving into how much technical knowledge is in his mind and I'm awe inspired by it. I love his self confidence in knowing who he is and what his priorities are. He'd much rather let what he does speak for himself. He did get an expensive Rolex from Tourneau in NYC a while ago because he values functionality and something well made. Walked into the shop with holes in his t-shirt and jeans... and flip flops. Service people there were very courteous and sold him a watch. If they were judgey, they'd lose out on a sale... their lost. I have came to organize his outfits with days of the week hanger to make sure he wears clean clothes every day... hygienes matter... but they are always neutral colored shirts and khakis for work and jeans for home. We are happy with our lives and attracts only genuine people because we don't want to waste energy and resources on those who don't matter. I admire so much about my husband and won't change a thing.

      @@zippy3253 it is not. However we may behave a certain way if we dress a certain way. Clothes, fabric and colour can impact us (emocionally/mentally/physically). But clothes are a form of communication. A great one at that!! I'm a piano player, my style /my true style is Rock/romantic goth, however when i had to teach music to little children, i had to adapt my clothing choices. Most of the people who i work with has no idea of my "true to heart" style. I'm a very eclectic reader: classics (greeks: Plato, Omer, etc.etc.), medicine, pathology, sci-fi, romances, psychology, steampunk, herbalism, gardening, cooking, BD/ comics, XVII/XVIII literature and whatnot. Oh,i'm currently finnishing my masters degree in clinical psychology. So... My tailored pants and white shirt dont say anything about me when i'm teaching. Anything about my tastes, what i do with my "free time", or where do i came from. That goes for ALOT of people. And yes, K.A. Sharmella is right!! its not a character indicater. Good video. Very insightful, but one thing that seems to be missing from these types of videos is a discussion on the why. Why do certain items mean certain things and is that really necessary. Who decides?
    It is easy to point out how it is wrong to judge others based on how they dress, but what is often missed is the fact that we use the same kinds of judgments in making choices for ourselves (seriousness, modesty, gender roles, status, etc.). The part on the artist's choice of painting himself kind of touches on this. That choice, however, can be easily dismissed as an artist being a quirky, eccentric artist. The big question remains: How should we dress, and why?

I am studying Fashion Design and one of the main topic discussions we talk about is how we are so conditioned to seeing clothing as superficial and meaningless. When on the contrary, it is one of the greatest mediums to communicate our beliefs like providing care, tenderness and self-expression. Like it was said, "acting like artist painting a self-portrait ". Our clothing provide a visual of our habitual practice. I find not many people see the beauty of its craft and valuable deeper history because of how often mainstream media presents it. So, seeing this video makes me super happy :)!

    i get your point, but IMO this message isn't something that should be emphasised. The fashion industry is out of control. Western nations already waste so much money on clothes - we over consume (often not even wearing everything we buy) due to cultural pressure driven by fast fashion companies at such environmental and ethical cost - and we are none the happier for it. Would it be so wrong if we all wore a uniform and judged each other on the contents of our character instead?

    • @zoareena

      there's def should be more awareness for the damage we do the earth.
      I think people can be fashionable and express themselves while consuming less.
      it's just a matter of putting more thought into it.
      sadly people are not aware and are uninterested.
      as long as some poor 3rd-world countries will produce the clothes dirt cheap, people would buy them cheaply and won't care about the meaning behind the cheap price tag.
      in a sense, it might be better to buy a few expensive outfits which are made ethically than a ton of cheap clothes...

    I live in a college town and I always see countless copycat people. Everyone here seems to have this hardcore conformity going on, the girls all wear the same crap (sometimes literally side by side or in groups, like the same outfit or just variations of the same outfit) and guys here, same thing, brand-name t-shirts, khaki shorts & pants. For shoes (guys & girls) it's all converse shoes or Adidas shoes (those ones with the 3 black stripes) - EVERYONE here wears one or the other (not me).My obvious gripe is that it doesn't reveal much about individuals if they're all wearing the same crap, other than the crap they're wearing is usually expensive and i guess makes them all vague consumerist, capitalist, type people. Eh? But mostly douchey basic guys & basic bitchy girls. It's quite sad in a sort of existential way. In fact, my own coworkers have remarked out I stand out so much here because I for example wear unique things like green-colored jeans or a black corduroy coat or just stuff like that. My shoes are not Converse or Adidas either, The thing is I'm not trying to stand out, everyone is so similar here, that a pair of boots or a blank colored t-shit or a sweater even, just blows their minds.

      @timgeoghegan7458 6 років тому +7

      I can see your point here, and very much agree about a lot of people following trends....but, objectively, we have to consider that perhaps some people may just like to dance to the beat everyone else is dancing to, not because they're forced. And, for the same reason, some might enjoy taking part in fashion trends as if they're seasons or chapters. They may not feel a need to express individuality so strongly through their clothing. Or maybe they're using clothing as their 'badge', as a way to project how they want to be seen (even if it is incongruous with who they actually seem to be). Or, yes, they may be just following the pack because of insecurities and social dynamics. One can't know when it comes to every person. And that's the thing - by passing judgment based on visuals alone, you too are falling in the trap of believing that you understand the person - their intention or their 'weakness' to influences - from only their clothing style. Simply by noticing them, affecting you in any way (by causing an opinion to form)...it betrays a heightened awareness in your own projection; an insecurity. It's a human thing though, to have these insecurities. We all do, to a point, about many thing. But we have to accept ourselves first - and only then we can accept others (including their perceived 'flaws' or what we may perceive to be 'lessor' traits).

      @@timgeoghegan7458 interesting response. My experience is that the ones that "choose" to wear a "uniform" ( I mean totally go with the flow to blend in), are often more judgemental, hostile and threatened by the "nonconformists". Their "currency" is to evaluate by an external "price tag" and you see the "bar codes being scanned" and a reassuring "ka-ching" of the price register and comfort that they feel that you are in the "right price bracket", and relief that you don't have "more" than them. Being non conformist and denying them bar codes to scan gets them hyper and uncomfortable at being unable to qualify and quantify. Sad.

    Could you do a video on why people get tattoos and what do they mean and represent? :)

    Sincerely this is the most beautiful visually School of Life video until now. The tech guru Kirsten has no motive to be shy, she's beautiful and has great style(and quite a personality in her early years). The message of the video is great, that our clothing represents what we feel and think and it's ok to dress like you want t0. I didn't know that we think less about our clothes when we are with good friends , personally I like to dress my best everytime, but yeah mentally is more relaxing with people which know you already. Let's give a big round of applause to this incredible team including Kristen for having the courage to be the video's model! 👏👏👏👏👏

    This video needs to talk about the effect of colours in clothing too, and how different colours affect not only the people viewing them, but the wearer themselves. Red projects confidence and assertiveness, blue is calming and thoughtful, black is neutral, white is clean and fresh, etc. I have found since changing my wardrobe from boring old grey and black t shirts that I am more confident and happier in what I wear

    3:13 Nope, I've always hated clothes shopping. Nothing gets my attention. I have zero fashion sense. I couldn't care less about clothes. I couldn't connect with this video at all. Nothing makes sense.

    Given this video, my indecision about what my "style" is comes to light as reflection of not having found an identity in life so far. Good insight.

    Wow! This is why a Bpder in my life gets very anxious and "splits" with any delays clothes shopping, or any deviation from her "perfect" fashion choice. I cottoned on a delay was not helpful, now I know more. Every little helps. Thanks

    Why does wearing tee shirts and hoodies makes me less of a woman ?
    It seems like every person I meet thinks that I'm a tomboy or a lesbian, but I'm straight, I just don't understand the concept of being "sexy" and wearing things to appeal or appease other people like men ...
    I just wear what I like, even if it seems misgendered ...

      What's worse is when a professor calls you out, saying. "I think that pink blue sweater is burning my eyes. Find something to wear," as an "example" of not taking things personally. And the whole class went quiet. Luckily one of my classmates stood up that he felt personally attack by the way our professor was demonstrating. 🤷

      Valerie Kimeli then you should reconsider what value you put on them , because you may put too much emphasis on brands and fashion trends...if you don't put ,I'm sorry , you should learn like hell, get a degree in something that the market needs and get some serious money by working

    Does that mean, that the younger generation which has started to wear very similar clothes all in all is trying to disguise their lack of self-being, because they are not particularly good at anything, or at least they think so/ havent discovered it yet. Lets discuss that...
