- 2024 Subaru WRX TR review by The Straight Pipes. The WRX TR is putting down 271 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque from a turbo 2.4L boxer engine. At $41,895 CAD, would you take it over an older WRX?

That car has 8 more launches left until something breaks
Lol I launched my 18 WRX probably over 20 times on e60 mix putting down 360whp before the clutch showed signs of giving out. So I'm sure stock power it'll be fine 😂.
@@wlfpireso Rex’s eat clutches ? Eww
@@Dabaroo stock clutch isn't designed to handle that much torque. Like with many of these 4 cyl manual cars a clutch upgrade is recommended when pushing over 100+ lbft of torque over stock. Other than that if your eating clutches is because of launching or a shit driver.
@@wlfpire20? You don’t have the gearing to race, save your money 😂😂😂
@@xFactoryUSA never said I still owned it 🤣. Racing is what the ZL1 is for.
Still have my 2002 WRX. Tastesfully modified. Passing it on to my son this year. He has instructions to never ever ever sell it.
That’s awesome! And if he takes good care of it he can pass it on to your grandson eventually..
You are a hero, good sir or madam. I sold my hawkeye many moons ago and I regret the decision every day
Remember when Subaru and Mitsubishi made cool desirable cars? Those were the days
"ANNNNND U KNEW WHO U WERE THENNNNNN!!
GIRLS WERE GIRLS AND MEN WERE MENNNNNNN!"
@@93remixIt’s a car channel lol calm down
Nothing wrong with this car.
Subaru SVX LSI and Mitsubishi 3000GT
My $3000 JDM Subaru B4 RSK is faster and more confortable than that thing, get a freaking Evo 4-5-6-7 they are dirt cheap and way faster / reliable
It’s funny how consistently throttle house will upload the exact same review 6 hours earlier than straight pipes every time 😂
Meh they are more entertaining. TSP haven’t changed their content since the start which gets very repetitive.
@@coooolsmurffff TH also does better analyses of cars that are more relevant to the car and consumer who wants to buy one.
TH production is incredible. I keep coming back here though after to make sure I support the very small amount of Canadian content!!!
TSP still makes decent content.
It's to bad they don't find ways to get along/work together and help eachother. There are so few good Canadian reviews out there, both team are in Ontario, it would be great to see then work together and grow.
You do realize that they are both Canadian and both based around Toronto and frequently get the same exact test vehicle before or after one another?
@@richardnavratil9661 no way they are both Canadian? Aww shucks I didn’t know that! Cmon man, no shi I know this. Still doesn’t change the fact that 2 of the same videos come out on the same time
It really was the lack of a hatch that made me choose a GTI over this. I like the look of the cladding, it would be perfect for winter for all the roadsalt. the 4wd on these are no joke.
So glad I bought my 2020 WRX STI and didn’t wait for the new gen.
Yeah me too. Bought a '21 STi
Came to say just this, my 19 sti has treated me great since 2020
Stis are just expense, I wanted a 2021 Sti but got a 2022 wrx instead. Better engine but worse transmission
@@234567king better engine, worse everything. Id get a 22+ for a daily but it could never replace what the sti was
@@dixbeflopin depends what your going for, 500whp + stay with the ej and previous gens. It’s not worse in every aspect, the chassis itself is really good. Just needs the Sti trans and your set, plus some brakes but there’s some cheap alternatives for that already
This WRX makes me appreciate the older generations a lot more…
@337speed yes, and the next generation of vehicles with all the hybrids, EV's and no manuals will make you appreciate this generation much more. You don't appreciate what you got until it's gone.
04-05 STI 4 life!
337! The legend!
I wish this car looked better from the outside.
Tbh, paint matched fenders really fix up the side and front profiles. Waiting for JDMuscle's aftermarket bumper to arrive to fix the tail end. Alternatively, black wheels and lowering it an inch or two also help make the flares look like they're just part of the wheel well.
@@Aether52 I bet that would improve things. I just think the last gen looked a little more cohesive and less over styled.
i wish this car was better from the inside
Still loving my 2022 WRX!
Still? I sure hope so; Thing is basically new
Subaru manual awd is more difficult to launch than any other manual car. You have to let the clutch up a little under bit point and hold it there for a second before letting off all the way. One mod i would recommend interior wise, would be the gas pedal spacer which will bring the pedal up and allow for easier heel toe or side step if you have wide foot
Installing a pitch stop mount totally fixes the sloppy shifter feel and the lurchy 1-2 and 2-3 shifts. Highly recommended first mod for anyone looking to improve the driving feel.
ive been noticing just in my normal manual impreza 2017 that the engine/pedal has this forward/backward "wobble" to it after clutching in and accelerating in 1st/2nd. you may be on to something here it could be the pitch stop now that i think about it that would make sense.
Thank you so much for showing the car seat in the back seat!
USA gets the premium sound system in TR, RS here has base audio
In Australia our first batch of models we got the WRX in both Sedan and Wagon form, basically it was a Levorg changed to the WRX name because of marketing and the WRX name would sell more, however it only came in CVT.
For the sedan we had
tS which was CVT only and was the top-of-the-line trim with the Recaro seats and all the options, basically the GT version for America.
We also had a GT model and a RS model.
And now we have the TR, which is basically a tS in manual only form.
Why couldn’t they have gone a few steps further and made an STI
Called Subaru. They told me, they will release the STI, told me to keep that money in the bank still. They are making us wait and wait and wait to make it more desirable. Then when it comes out again, boooooom , we will all go after it making subaru brands #1 again. So as for me i have 80.000 $ available waiting foe STI to come out in 3 to 5 years. Be patient, STI is coming. They are doing it on purpose

WRX owner here, can confirm. Dumped the clutch one time on a launch and car made a sound I didn't like. Haven't hard launched the car since.
Hold down the Traction Control button to fully defeat TC. My brother has a 22 WRX Base with the Manual and it's fun to drive. It's what I used to learn manual.

I have a 2022 and the thing is super fun. Crazy how much power you can get out of these from an intake and tune
I live near Tail of the Dragon and ripped my 05 Legacy GTL thru there, had the crotch rockets pullin over 😂

Why’d you replace it so soon?

Well done gents
VB WRX is a comfy daily but it runs out of revs too fast since it tops at 6k... Traded my 2022 for a 2020 STI.
Just need a run and redline can move up to 6500
Yeah, I had a modded 22 WRX, I hated it... Shifting at 6k sucked, as soon I was hitting full boost I was shifting....
@@jamescooper5183 I meant to say tune lol. I see people running intake and tune pushing 325whp/350wtq and redline is pushed to 6500/6750
I just looked at one in a showroom and really like it.
Shifting a Subaru is hard to get smooth. The AWD system is funky like that
I think it's funny that you highlight the lumbar since I thought these were the most comfortable Recaro seats I've ever sat in, but... I've got scoliosis and prefer having a lot of lumbar 😂
That’s why I said sit in them
Does it have auto rev match?
Subaru makes good cars, I have driven Subies from 2002 through 2018, and the one thing that always bothered me was the lack of competitive acceleration compared to similar cars. The Subies stay safe and slow, while most competition becomes faster. I got used to getting beaten off the line by so many other brands, and the 0 to 60 times and horsepower figures are going backward. Apparently, Subaru has abandoned the performance enthusiasts that form the basis for the WRXs popularity. It looks like Subaru is happy to let all of us formerly faithful followers go away to other faster brands, and sure enough I have moved on.
I think the other difference with US - TR you get the harman kardon comes standard and in Canada - RS you don’t get it.
Love the format
I also had a Version 8 WRX hatch in blue, had it for ten years, missis mostly used it for picking kids up from school and getting the groceries went amazing
Had zero issues with it other than AICV service and got the same $14k I paid for it in 2011 when traded
Those black wheel arches are abominable.
It's to save some paint if any folks decide to do some rally stuff.
Subaru doesn't have the best paint nor body panels, they're trying to save stuff the best they can.
I ordered & have a '21 Crosstrek Limited ... nice gas saving vehicle. BUT not on par with my 26 yr old Toyota 4 Runner Limited in paint & or body panel quality.
I don't remember if it's north America or USA sales but look at the Vb wrx sales compared to the brz or gr corolla or supra... Subaru is selling these things. Unlike the golf or supra. So it makes sense they are kinda not hard core enough for us enthusiasts...
Well doesn't help that the golf is overpriced as shit. Got mine mine 2018 new for 20k. Nowadays it's 40k new. I loved that car but you're an idiot if you pay 40k for it
I drive a 2020 WRX RS. Recaros and 4/2 Brembos. I too wish that the RS had its own badge or something lol but oh well. But my RS has a sunroof!
Love those Brembos!
Which part of ontario are you people driving?
The TR series came out years ago, it was referred to as “Tuner Ready” from what I recall.
Yeah they kinda changed it now lol
Great video as usual! To many better cars for the price, at least they still offer a manual but meh.
-not a fan of the black "outback" plastic on the exterior.. i like the idea of it to prevent rock chips/rust in the pant, but the execution just looks cheap.
-the grill would look better without the random looking blocks in the honeycomb
-interior hasn't changed in years, my 2017 impreza sport looks nearly identical
otherwise what can i say, i love subaru, just wish car companies these days didn't look so homogenized and took more chances.
when are you getting the new x3?
Seems like the same complaints that Matt Moran had
Matt is a legend
Are they making more than a few hundred of them?
Aren’t they making a tS too?
I think the rough road you are choosing to do your launches on doesn't help with smooth launches or 1-2 gearchanges!
Microscoped!! Those lines, Cheryl !
Actually not the same car in Canada. In the US the TR gets the upgraded Harmon Kardon stereo. In Canada the RS is based on the mid-spec sport trim and looses features such as the rear heated seats and the upgraded Harmon Kardon sound system that our top trim Sport Trch receives. Interesting as well is that Canada finally got the GT model for 2024, however, they took the Recaro seats out of it (The US spec GT gets the Recaro seats). A local Subaru dealer in Edmonton is asking $59K for an RS with an MSRP of $46K. Ridiculous dealer markup.
Mexico got a wagon WRX, at around $50k USD and only CVT, had to go to subaru maxico to check that out
Are these more fun than a 3 series ?
My biggest issue with this generation WRX looks wise, is actually the rear end.
Looks is subsjective. I love the rear ! People will always hate no matter what. People will always say i like it but.... always a but. No car is perfect buddy
@@ComedyTVWeb Exactly, no car is perfect. I'm just voicing my opinion on the rear end, and to me, it feels like a huge step down from the previous gen. I'm not the voice for all people lol
@@kaz9687 then go get a car with rear back that u gonna like. U know what, you always gonna find someone else that u don't like. It would the front this time 🤣, or something else. We are human being, wr can make things to perfection. Lets just appreciate that wow tech from japsnese ppl still offering us a boxer engine ( sexiest sound om earth)... Not like u are seing the rear when driving. The WRX is soo beautiful. Go get a Toyota
@@ComedyTVWeb Bro you're allowed to like the rear end and you're entitled to that opinion as much as i am to mine, it isn't a big deal like you're making it out to be lmfao. Literally talking about looks, nothing else.
@@kaz9687 you were talking about the look. Customize it, come on... Japan is giving us a sexy car. Your turn to customize it how ever u want it. Subaru being always hated since it came out. Was called ugly and today, most do love it. Drive a Coralla, or a honda civic the rear look sooo nice.
I heard wrxs are not selling well. Figured should just bring in some levorg sti
Another DJ, J? Gotta ask… what do you do for work besides test cars?!
Thank you for the honest review. I own a 2020 WRX base since new with 40k miles. The comfort has always been marginal. Seems not much has changed except the price inflation.
Good luck with the insurance on these cars, one of the higher rate with a high history of accidents.💯
Still waiting for another STI hatch. I will hang onto my 2011 STI until then.
Panda spec in this is very cool
Bring the New Subaru WRX Impreza STI Back in 2025!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
It's going to come, but until the '27/'28 model. As a Hybridized hatch model as well. At least they're giving us the hatch again.
It's Canadian morning! Throttle house to straight pipes! And soon... Savage geese (which is American but geese are Canadian so I'm confused)
I am begging you to tell Subaru execs directly to massively improve their infotainment, add hybrids, add a bit more power to their vehicles, to fire their designers and hire new better ones, and lastly to ditch the cvts or at least use Toyota e-cvts
It's a subi. Either not driven hard enough cause it's a poor excuse for wrx or will be over tuned n modded then break cause.....subi.
The older ones are best with some solid work done and built block (don't do it like donut media).
Win for handbrake though 😅
Is there some awkward tension between Jakub and Yuri?
RS gives bad vibes in the US. It reminds us of the 2.5 RS that looked like a WRX, but had a crappy non-turbo motor.
Nice watch game Jakub😊
👍👍
I know it was in a different context, but "Nothing is connected when you clutch in" is not super accurate. Try tossing it in first at 80mph with the clutch in.
But it's not "connected" still.
@@jaybeemhardscrote7466 What are you referring to when you say "it"? The wheels to the engine? Sure that is disconnected. But saying "nothing is connected" is a bit of an oversimplification entailing every last thing is disconnected. Your synchronizers may have something to say when you toss it in first going 80 with the clutch in.
the front and rear diffs are connected via a center diff, if the new wrx tr doesn’t have a center diff cutoff it’ll put more strain on the center diff if you rip the handbrake cause of the different speeds front/rear
In the US this rig is $42K. Next!
I wonder if they're gonna call the upcoming TS the s/t in Canada😂
To turn traction control fully off, it should be *hold* the traction control button. It is for the 2015-2021.
Just give me a Crosstrek WRX already Subaru. It would sell like hotcakes as all Crosstreks do in this day and age. The cladding diaper is just way too ugly and WRX sales are down like 40%
A Crosstrek Wilderness STI would be hilariously awesome.
*Should be called a Boobaru*
Hope y'all are doing well up in Canadastan
So glad that Subaru is still making multiple fun-to-drive vehicles!
It's funny, more and more owners (including me) actually dig the cladding. Paint matching now looks like an online date that shows up with shaved eyebrows. In fact, being completely unaware of the seismic snark and gripes that have existed since the original Adam about WRXs, when I first saw the VB my first thought, "Oh cool and off-road-ish looking car!" I was, of course, driving Tacomas at the time.
The side cladding is okay since it makes the car look different to anything else, and well it's better off-road than on-road so makes sense but for me it's really just the rear bumper, it's way too plastic, you look at the car from behind and like 40% of your view is black plastic. They did a good job with the WRX Sportswagon which has no plastics and the rear bumper isn't hideous, plus that car came out before the WRX as the Levorg in Japan so I'm not sure what happened.
I’m of a similar mindset. It’s reveal I wasn’t feeling it l, but in person it made me think “off-road rally vibes” which I love for a car since you dont see often. I still think the rear end is too chunky but I love the looks over typcial street car vibes
They decided to make it look like it belonged in a family photo with an outback Crosstrek and Forrester. People seem to forget it's still a Subaru.
What I find is that this car doesn’t photograph well but in person looks better and better. I bought a ‘23 about a month ago and I absolutely love the look now.
@@turnerdrywallrestoration8077 Totally agree. It's a bit like that woman Seinfeld dates who looks bad in certain lighting haha. I've had my VB for almost 2 years now and am still in love with it.
I think Subaru heard you and then called it the TS
Bought the 24 limited and it’s been great so far.
Don't understand why they don't make the WRX a hatchback. It would be more useful and desirable to more people. Plus it would be cheaper for Subaru to just use the same body across the board for the WRX/Imprezza/Crosstrek.
Make WRX Imprezza Again
Great Banter
Please make a STI, Subaru!!
We bought a new base WRX for 29k and it is a great daily driver. I don't really the rationale understand the TR. It's 42k, with a harsh ride, and it won't keep up with a CTR or GR on the track. Hard pass for me.
Is this new car?
Man, there are like 7 knock outs available in the IP. Lol
VBs are awesome!
1/8" aux in is my $**t!
Where I live a lot of moms type of cars lol
Give us a North American wagon and a very special Tail of the Dragon episode to celebrate…
Can't get on board with the plastic clad wheel arches
…never upgrade my STI 2020 for this
Yuri going full HOA dad on the stock exhaust!
been a long time fan of the subaru brand, personally owned 5 over the course of my driving days. subaru has been very lazy and have been left in the dust by the competition.
Sorry I’m not from Canada so I don’t know about there, but at least in the states, people would disagree about it being “pretty sick “. Sales are down an insane amount.
Ya probably because markup. Not the cars fault
Sales are on par with every other year of wrx
TR = Tuner Ready
Track ready. It’s not a base trim anymore.
What watch is Jakub wearing?
Rolex Two tone 41 Datejust with diamond indices. It’s hard to tell if the bezel is fluted or smooth. In either case, they are far more available than the steel sports watches of Rolex. It’s a nice, flashy daily.
Say WRX RS 5X fast. I struggled with that.
It doesn't make sense why they didn't add more power.
Canada is a true blessing. They gave us Ryan Reynolds, Maple Syrup, Poutine, and The Straight Pipes!
The only drive mode on a WRX is WRX.
Jacob should not complain he want manual and he got it this is not AT or CVT 😂
Same title as Throttle House? 🤔
Subaru's corporate infotainment stack is probably the worst on the market today.
Hp and torque figures less than that of an 03 350z in 2024 is CRAZY for an awd sports sedan 🤦🏽♂️
The power to weight of a 350z is better than this car 😭
Ya but it’s held back from the factory, tune it and you gain a lot of power
I get one it’ll have nameless muffler deletes.
