  • Hey Good People,
I had an interesting case in the shop this week. We had a 2015 Fiat Abarth that was towed in. Customer stated that he went over a large puddle and suspected water got into the turbo. Follow me along in this video as I go through my diagnosis process.

You sir are not a parts changer. You are a mechanic. The people calling you a parts changer because you dont overhaul, dont know the definition of the term "part changer". Parts changers fire the parts cannon at something and hope for the best. Parts changers look at dtc's and change parts based on codes not actually trouble shooting the problem. Keep doin what you do man, you are doing just fine.

If I was that customer, I would find the cheapest engine to put in it. Make sure it can pass emissions. Take it to a dealership and trade it or sell it to them.

I still have a 2.7L 1999 Concorde runs good blew out a water pump gasket on the highway in 2010. Big puff of smoke bluish white and motor shut off. Towed it back home drained oil put in new oil started back up right away then started shaking and oil and water mixed. Put in chains , guides, tensioners and water pump. Started right up been running ever since. I would very strongly urge do not try to restart any engine until motor is oil primed without starting preferably the next day. Air intake water is an engine killer probably 100%. Did check compression and it was good after oil pressurization then repaired vehicle. Oh, after mechanical repairs made clear codes car started up like nothing happened. That Fiat motor is toast. Thanks guys greatly appreciate this video.

Alex, you are ten times the mechanic I am, but the first thing I do if an engine went swimming, is pull the dipstick. Good video, definitely needs an engine, hoping the transmission is ok.

Thanks buddy, I didn’t bother pulling the dip stick because I kind of figured it needed a engine from what the customer told me

After a possible water forging incident pull the spark plugs and then crank to see if water spews out. If water but no damage let it drain down into the crank case and add sum marvel mystery oil to keep it from rusting while the plugs are out. I forgot use a suction device to pull the major water out. 99% hydro lock when water is sucked to the cylinder's. If it has weak rings the pressure is going to the crank case. It's a goner

Autolite is a great spark plugs for older Ford’s and other domestic cars brands up until the early 90’s. Autolite use to manufacture the Motorcraft spark plug up until around the early 2010’s.

Put a little mystery oil on each piston put the plugs back in and start it maybe it will come around I work on engines that run 24/7 in the natural gas field and some set for years I do a compression with low to no compression and it came back around

I think the only thing I saw you almost do wrong(not that bad buuuuut)was not box up the spark plugs and set them back in the car like you saw them. You did say you were going to leave everything like you found it. Autocraps or not, being respectful of the customer's stuff goes a long way. I think you've even mentioned something about other mechanics being respectful to the customer as well in your past videos. You are good at what you do and I love watching your videos. Your wife had your back right there and she was on it👏
You guys are awesome, keep up the great work. And no you aren't just a parts changer, you are a great mechanic Alex!

I just gotta comment, when I first saw the video thumbnail in my youtube page I thought the title said Fat Albert 😂I know many shops that don't do engine overhauls or trans rebuilds. there are other shops that do that for their main business.

😂😂😂 it was the “F” & “A” wasn’t it? You’re right, I am looking for some reliable shops that do in my neck of the woods, so I can refer my customers and give them other options even if I don’t do the work ya know?

Not sure how valves would get bent with liquid in the cylinders.
However, I do see rods get re-configured.
You gonna take it apart and see what really happened? Send it to Eric @ I do cars! He'll save the water pump!!

Hello Alex my name Jerome S my wife has a 2008 Chevy uplander LT 3.9 it ran hot before due to low and old oil. The code came back for camshaft sensor so I changed the 1 by the power steering pump I noticed the wire connector wires was burnt also so I clipped them and reconnected it.

I had a old pinto 4 cylinder that went swimming and had no compression I plowed the plug holes out and put oil in the cylinders turned it over and got it to start but the lower end was out. So I gave him 45.00 and then put a 302 in it.

Question, my 08 charger 3.5 will start but… it cranks for like 5-6 seconds before it starts. I’ve checked the fuel pressure regulator and seems fine. What else could it be?

  • @AKChryslertech

Another argument for the overhaul comment, in todays age, it is cheaper for the customer to swap the engine out than to rebuild it. Shops that specialize in overhauling charge an arm and a leg for it. It is no longer economical to rebuild an engine like that one due to like you said, the liabilty but also because with the labor hours you would have in it for the rebuild, you could have swapped the motor out for a better price.

2:29 naw that engine toast. As soon as the water came in while running, it was done. I've never seen or heard of an engine that ran fine after getting water in the cylinders. Honestly Alex you wasting your time with that diag. New engine as soon as he said water in the engine. Even replacing the engine you will have problems bc of soaked wire harness, ect.
