- Hey Good People,
New Year, Dodge's still coming into the shop, nothing new lol. We had a 2017 Dodge Durango in the shop. Vehicle keeps dying. It's not the batteries, nor the alternator. In this video you guys can follow along with me as I go through my diagnostic process to find the issue.
I hope you guys learn something from this video. That's always the goal. Leave your comments below. I love to hear from you guys.
Your favorite Mechanic,
Alex

Gud catch bruh. I was definitely unaware of that fuse bank on the positive terminal circuit. Y'all a funny couple with a great vibe. Don't let the world ever step into y'alls living happy and prosperous.
Appreciate that
Agreed. I love their relationship dynamics. They make a very good tandem
i started driving back in 84 and bought my first car in 89 and my first rule was to buy the hanes and/or chiltons book for whatever vehicle i bought. when working on anything, DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE!!! most times its the first step ion the book for any repair. its there for a good reason.
You most likely will NOT find a O.E.M. service/repair manual for any new car nowadays. I bought the service manuals (4) for my 2011 Honda CRV (when new) because I do my own repairs. Those Chilton & Haynes manuals may no longer be in print form in a few years. You will soon have to get online service data to get wiring diagrams, etc.
Yeah I was gonna say the same. Seems like the auto repair world was a better place when you could get the manuals for your car. Now their even making it harder to change your own brakes or check the transmission fluid on these newer cars 😒
True! It’s hard to find manuals anymore sadly. Also wanted to mention, I still drive a 1988 Honda Accord and I love that car 🙃
if i cant find a haynes or chiltons book for it, i wont buy it. nothing wrong with a 88 honda. the newest vehicle i own is my 04 ram 2500 and to be truthful, i dont ever want something new. the wife has a '12 escape and the best thing...theyre all paid for and running great because a guy can still work on them without "needing" a scan tool. i got my code reader and the interwebs and thats gotten me by just fine. love the channel, by the way. @@AlexTheCarDoctor
El cheapo for sure , buy from rock auto go parts are good quality and are very inexpensive.😂
You had a good teacher, thanks for passing your knowledge onto the youngsters.
As a learning young technician i get more knowledge from your videos Great work guys🙏🏿
Our pleasure!
Coming from a vet, to a greenhand; never recommended a neverstart battery to your customers. There are only 3 companies in the world that actually manufacture new batteries, neverstart, superstart, duralast, and a couple other brands; are all made by the same manufacturer, and are all crap. Get an interstate, or factory replacement. Interstate, and all the manu's, are built by same company. Stick with the higher priced batteries, for higher quality. And always do your research.
AC Delco batteries are solid and have a real nice price lately, too. 12 year vet.
When I first clicked on your video and you said 2 battery’s was something to do with a fuse or relay. With two winter vehicles and 2 summer vehicles I started doing research were that’s all I use the internet for. Because everyone man/woman needs to really understand there vehicles. You and uncle Scotty Kilmer are the only 2 I study and I appreciate you. And thanks for the reply to my question on you and your wife’s live yesterday. -26 so guess the polar vortex is over and now the snow begins lol. Thank you once again for teaching your knowledge and I wish you and your wife the best in 2024 💯
I appreciate that man! Putting me up there with Uncle Scotty is a huge compliment 😏 I respect Scotty! Thanks for your kinds words and thanks for your support 👨🏽🔧
I really enjoy watching your videos and learning from it. You and your wife do make a good team, and you're a great mechanic. Keep up the good work, and im looking forward to future videos.
Thanks so much! I appreciate the love!
Man, I appreciate you man I’ve been out the game for minute now I’m back in the game making money man just because of you and your knowledge. Appreciate you brother.
Glad I could help
Definitely agree. I started an auto mobile mechanic business as a journeyman. Really enjoy watching these always something to learn or enjoy.
That was a great repair to show on video nice work…👍👍
Thanks 👍
the cat wanted to give a free diag😅😅😅..
Nice job, Doctor! No tick, that's good. 👌 It was 36 below with 29 mph wind and minus 13 in northwestern Minnesota this morning. 😢Old fat Dutchman loves ya!
Nice work! Good learning moment for me. Electrical stuff always scares me, I don't know nothing about it
You can do it! Just start messing around with it and you’ll learn by tail and error lol
That was a smart decision to use a bystander fuse as a test, to prevent your brand new fuse from blowing as a result of a dead short. $140 for the entire fuse bank is an irritating design. Old style fusible links were a lot cheaper than that.
Just subbed 👍 keep up the real world scenarios and honesty!
your approach and your wifes enthusiasm to your craft got me to sub
First time viewer ! Good videos I'll keep watching ,from Charlotte
Thanks for your support! Hope to visit Charlotte one day soon. I hear it’s a wonderful place!
Very smart diag using old fuse link to check for short. Excellent idea 👍🏻👊🏻
Thanks! 👍
Great video Alex you and your wife do a great job very informative
Thanks 👍
them long studs are a good way to cause a short. Those Durango's are nice looking vehicles.
Good diag video. Snowy and cold here in Roanoke VA
Mopar Goat strikes again 😅
Always informative, keep it up as usual.
Always! Thank you 🐐🐐🐐🐐👨🏽🔧
I love watching y'all work..The announcer is wonderful..I am coming for you to check the srt8
.06..181k
Come on! I can’t wait to hear that srt8 rumble.
Great diag and repair. I did not know there was a fuse there! (would have seen it when looked there) Not a cheap part! Thanks for the video.
Do your thing Dr. Alex the car guy👍
I had a 2018 journey come in a few weeks ago, same symptom... no power. Noticed the ignition switch wasn't lighting up (the off, acc, run). Pulled switch out and found power coming from the underhood fuse box. Checked fuse, and it was good. Pulled up the fuse box to start checking for an open wire and found about 9 wires chewed by a rat. One of them being the power supply to the ignition switch. Soldered back and repaired all damaged wiring, and it was good to go.
Doctor pentastar back again 😍😍 literally watching this vid while at lunch break at my job.
Hope you enjoyed it!
17:45 tell customer to keep original alternator and have it bench tested?
As long as that Amazon seller has some warranty on it, I guess it already installed and can't be returned 😅
yo first one love your videos and your energy. you seem like a very nice dude
I appreciate that!
Man, you got such an interesting channel. I get a kick out of watching you...and still learning at 73. Much Appreciation.
Thanks so much! I’m sure I could learn a lot from you as well!
NEW SUBSCRIBER and LIKED the videos! A Cat guy has to be cool! LOL I have a 2015 Durango Citadel. I do not have that Aux Battery. What is is for and what Durangos have them? Love the channel! Im a DYI guy and this channel is wicked cool!
Nice work Alex!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Great job finding the problem keep up the good work nice video my brother
Will do… thank you sir! 🫡👨🏽🔧
Alex on the penastar engines . Were do get your lifters and rocker arms from . Keep up the good work. Always a pleasure to see your videos.
I get them from auto zone.I’m glad to hear that thanks
LoL 🤣😆
Putting the engine back in my '03 Forester. Was testing without the alternator connected. Went to hook up the alternator and snap, crackle, Pop. There went the main fuse!! Working tired!
Dang
Very honest vid. Thanks. Sucks to be the next shop.
Thank yall for that power circuit hidden path, got it in my private library now.
Car doctor did it again! 👍💯
New subscriber here! Enjoy your channel and awesome info.
Good job 😃
Good fuse info too
Glad it helped
Good job
Great job and video
Thanks!
I went through the same thing with my 09 Cadillac cts-v, bought a new battery and went through two alternators because the shop said the alternators were the problem, I found out myself theres a wire that went from the alternator starter battery has a fuse on a 200 fuse the wire was hitting my headers and arcing and blew the fuse the fuse is riveted shut so you are forced to buy the whole new I got tired of spending momey so I just cut the fused out and a new fuse holder and put a 250 AMP fuse in it and rerouted the wire awy from the haeders. I only spent $10.00 to fix it myself, I told the shope and they gave half my money and now I have a brand new extra alternator sitting in my garage $380.00. They never knew to check out the wire. I wish you made this video last summer lol. But thanks for your help and the time you put in to making them...
I love your videos, you're teaching me so much. The dishonest mechanics must hate you. Thanks!!!!!!!
Thanks. I’m glad you’re learning. I promise that’s the only reason I do UA-cam. The bad mechanic might hate me but they gone learn something if they watch me too! 👨🏽🔧
Excellent video
I appreciate that!
I love yall man lol Good video
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Had this issue twice, main cause was the MOPAR main big battery failing internally..
I have a 2017 WK2… V6
The batter junction fuse box on the positive terminal blew a fuse..
Only solution is to replace box and battery. And all is great, dropped in two AGM batteries VARTA
Three years and running strong 💪🏻
awesome work
Thank you! Cheers!
The cat 😂 good video as always Alex
Glad you enjoyed
Awesome repair doc. Man ppl buy the cheapest part for their vehicles, and go cheaper on repair. But be walking around with Jordan's on 🙄 or $200+ pair of shoes.
Especially in Atlanta! Be dressed from head to toe but tires are as bald as a boiled egg 😂
Most Beautiful women don't look at your tread depth or don't look over to see if your check is in light is on 😂
@BlueDinnie True. I just be like, why go cheap on your car. That's one of your most expensive investments. Not to mention the one that gets you to and from the 💰.
@AlexTheCarDoctor man I see cars totaled all the time. Look at the tires, and they're bald. I was on a call once. BMW slammed again the Jersey barrier, spins out, and smashes rear in the pouring rain. He said idk what happened. I looked at the tires, and they were bald. I look at him and said it's those non approved DOT slicks you have on it. He didn't think it was funny.

AWESOME VIDEO , GREAT JOB,
Thank you!
@@AlexTheCarDoctor YOU'RE WELCOME .
Those dodge ipdm boxes are horsepoop. Garbage. My first go to with any electrical issues. Good show sir
Nice video.
Great to know
EGR cooler on right side, was a recall on the alternator, and their is a flash update for tailgate and sunroof for battery draw.
Thanks for this info! I really appreciate this!
You failed to check for parasitic draw. Especially when the customer said she had to change out batteries, or her batteries were dying.
I believe Sumone arced the battery to ground probably at the alternator pos terminal. A draw test will surely come back at less than 50 milliamps
Unless the alternator was not putting out enough voltage for the battery to recharge. Battery could have also discharged through a bad alternator with bad diode(s). Let's see if we get a follow up video.
You’re absolutely correct a parasitic draw would prove if it existed or not plus no mention of vent tube to the AGM battery should advise the customer In my 2 cents worth it most likely started with a parasitic draw after replacing multiple batteries then a generator (which blew the 150 amp fuse during installation ) not knowing hopefully it’s ok CHEERS
Good job DR.😁😁😁😁😁😁
I appreciate ya! 👨🏽⚕️🩺👨🏽🔧
Please continue Putting thorough detailed Videos on this for Kids that Want to Learn
Absolutely! 🙏🏽
U guys are awesome
Thanks so much 🙏🏽
Bought my '00 Grand Cherokee few years ago. Cheap. Was having charging issues and battery draining issues. They already threw an alternator at it. The real deal was the plug for the small wires was loose. Tighten them up, solved.
The majority of the battery draw was the transistor/relay for the electric fan. Unplug the fan. It also has a mechanical fan which is cooling fine.
It still has a battery draw issue. Leave it for 4-7 days and it'll be dead. Don't know what's up. I hooked up a trickle charger. No issues.
good work, a final test would be to turn everything on, headlights, A/C, stereo , windshield wipers, ect , to put a full load on the car.. just to be sure nothing else is overloading the the charging system., never underestimate the problems a person can cause that worked on it before you.. hopefully that elcheapo alternator last a while and they dont bring it back claiming you didnt fix it right,, its always " its the same problem as before". insinuating you didnt fix it right,, if she tried 2 new batteries, after the original battery, there may be a parasitic draw somewhere,, an amp clamp on the main positive battery would be a good test after the system goes to sleep,, around 10 to 40 miliamps would be a ballpark acceptable draw.. if the car comes back in a week or two see if they had any aftermarket newfangled bullshit added, like aftermarket alarm, Gps track your wife devices, ect,,, they are usually the culprit..
For many many Mopar always had a fusible link
When you said "I'm a cat person"...I subscribed.
Secondary battery for the electric water pump, electric oil pump, hydraulic pump(transmission/brakes)….because this thing has auto stop. It’s one of the worst things the automotive industry ever did.
That brand is "APremium". They got parts all over Amazon.
Did you check if there is a phantom draw? Does that have the TIPM?
He could have put that secondary battery in Ceres with the main battery overloaded that main lead fuse when it's only probably a 12 only. Very common from idiots doing that in my business practice. So I agree with you doctor
Hey Alex on the Penastar 3.6 were do you purchase the camshafts for these engines ? Is there a better price and same quality as the dealer ?
I get them from Oriellys. Never had a problem
You should be a Dodge specialist you know a lot about the penastar
I know right lol 😂👨🏽🔧
First rule when working on anything electrical on a vehicle disconnect the dam power first before you do anything
12:15 ugh, proprietary fuse assembly 😢
It's sold online for as little as $84 though, but you need that done ASAP and move along 😅
Online warranty?
@@s.j.5850 I get stuff from eBay like a power steering pump with a 3 year warranty, brake rotors with a 1 year warranty, front struts from Detroit axle with a 10 year warranty, etc
Does this work for my 13Rt Durango !? Because I see that I don’t have that part is not showing fuses
Hey we have a 2012 dodge Durango and the fan not working and we changed it it still didn't work any idea?
Good job , why do you always have to fix janky?
Hey Alex, my 02 Suburban has an extremely loud ticking noise on idle and on acceleration. It has no catalytic converters and has Glasspacks welded in the place of the cats but with very poor quality welds. I also have 3 broken studs on my exhaust manifolds. Does this to you sound like exhaust leak or lifters? I need a second opinion from a shop owner before I remove the heads and check and possibly replace the lifters. I don’t see any metal sparkles when I change my oil. (5.3 Vortec 235,000 miles).
That generation of LS didn’t have lifter issues. Most likely it’s just an exhaust leak.
Happened to me was working on my car on a Sunday and crossed mounted the terminals blew the main fuze.Soldered it back until the dealership had the part in stock then replaced it
Now that’s some excellent Next Level Get er Done stuff right there! 👨🏽🔧🫡 Awesome work!
question you said at the start she had draining did u happen to check battery draw after fuse was replaced i just dont see a fuse causing that issue so i am asking i figured someone crossed the terminals and it blew and only being one issue?
I assume what happened, the original batteries were old and worn out, causing it to go dead every morning or so, she tried replacing the batteries, arcing something out and blowing the main fuse, and after that she started throwing parts at it. so I did not find it necessary to do a battery draw test. my assumptions was correct. She haven’t been back.
What's wrong with individual fuses? 🤔
Do more videos like this for electric
I got you!
Just think, my '58 Plymouth Suburban, in my profile picture, I believe it doesn't have any fuses!!
Harry is searching for rats.🤣🤣🤣🤣. Great work.
Alex what school you attend to become a machanic. You is so smart.
Didn’t really go to school. I spent my senior year in high school in a technical college for brakes. I learned most of what I know from being a Mobile Mechanic and having to figure it out!
Harry wanna drive forgot to tell him it’s dead 😂
Before i watch im gonna guess the TIPM or the battery cover has too much dust as has parasitic drain now or the stop start little battery is draining the main battery.
Whoever worked on the car before you gets a 'B' for effort & a 'D" for testing & execution. With newer cars you cannot afford a "Oops". That cheap, no-name alternator will cost them more in the long run when someone has to replace it sooner than later. It makes for more business for you!
One of those DIY neighbors knows everything mechanic failure lol😅
I think she mentioned something about a mobile mechanic
If they changed the alternator and didn't disconnect the battery what are the odds they touched the ground when they disconnected the battery from the alternator?
5:1
Wife is on point with the everstart/Walmart brand, but I'd stay with the MAXX series or the platinum (if your vehicle calls for AGM) 4:02
I avoid the middle tier or value battery because it may not have enough CCA for your application
What is the metals touching other metal and that’s why I won’t turn on
👍👍👏👏
What's the purpose of the smaller battery?
It’s for the stop start system
Where are you located?
foxy mama the reason that battery rank so high is because they dont cost as much,,, they should be renamed to NEVERSTART because around the one year mark, they quit.. she needs a NAPA OR DURALAST GOLD..
Damn
They were suppose to swap the old studs from the auxiliary battery to the new one.
I’m not sure who she has working on this video.
Mopar goat 🐐
🐐🐐🐐🐐👨🏽🔧
11:59 i bet that block is 300 dollars
Will yall get the cat a mechanic suit to wear while at work?
😂😂😂 I’m gonna tell the wife and see what we can find for him lol
why you always get parts from dealership, theres other places where you get the same product for less
Chrysler things.
