Personally, I liked the old lore better. I know, they can tell more stories with Necron dynasties and individualized leaders, but the old lore with the Necrons as these cold, methodical, inscrutable monsters from a forgotten age gave the 40K galaxy a sense of unsettling mystery the other factions mostly lacked. The old lore was more of a slow burn, as you never quite knew what they wanted or why they were moving in. Maybe it's to sterilize the planet, or maybe there's a bit of their old archaeotech sitting in a museum somewhere, and they're gone as soon as they retrieve it, possibly without a single shot fired. Or maybe there's something about left-handed humans they're interested in, and they flatten a city looking for them, but otherwise buzz right off after grabbing their requisite boatload of southpaws. The new lore... Well, like I said, now you can tell stories not just featuring Necrons but _starring_ them, and that's something. But to my mind, under the new lore? They're ultimately just one more group of conquerors, and 40K has never lacked for those.
It can still be the same tho depending on how you tell the story. Unless you are telling the story from the Cron's perspective, you still never know for sure why they are going to any particular place or doing whatever they are doing. And the majority of them are still inscrutable monsters even if the story is from the Cron's perspective; remember the lower tier Necrons are literally children robbed of personality and put in a metal body. It's just that now you can tell stories from their perspective rather than just having them around to destroy stuff. Szarek, for instance, might be one of the most interesting characters in all 40k. A 60 million year old King who did the best he could with what he had, made major mistakes, had major victories, and ultimately left it all behind because he thought it was the right thing to do.
Aren't the old lore Necrons still there from an in-universe perspective though? Probably next to nobody in the entire galaxy knows about their dynastic struggles and intentions about wanting to have host bodies once more. From the eyes of a farmer , soldier , admech explorer , planetary governor , Astartes captain ; Necrons are still the same mysterious and cold machines of utter annihilation and bullshit hacks. Just my 2 cents.
I still don't know how the Necron tomb world on Kronus got away with only being destroyed by the Blood Ravens, they are lucky they didn't all get stolen.
One thing to consider about some Necron Dynasties is how fractious they can be. A fringe world Lord wakes up early and decided to carve a small fief for himself, or a particularly ambitious subordinate lord decides to kill his sleeping overlord and take his place. Necrons can be petty like that.
I'm not surprised, actually. In fact I'm amazed the Necrons even had a presence there. The Eye of Terror used to be the core of the Aeldari empire, remember? The fact that the Eldar would tolerate, or be ignorant about about any Necron presence that close to their core worlds is fascinating.
@@Flight_of_Icarus well, consider that the eldar's primary mode of interstellar travel is the webway. It only goes to select planets. So it's quite possible proximity is only really measured from their access to the webway. (Was there a webway portal on cadia? 🤔)

Love it the Necrons have a phenomenal success rate for awakening and only a handful of times have they been defeated of the thousands of worlds awoken. I would rather be atomized by a Necron then captured by a Drukari or Night Lord but they are the most powerful and deadly force as they have the best technology and the awnser to any other force.
The lore change effectively traded horror for personality. I miss old'crons because they were the only truly competent major force. Champions of the War In Heaven back for round two.
and these cats always survived the awakenings just to execute classic "Alien" jump scares. PDF sneaks trough dark corridor and hears a noise "Gee, it's just a cat." Turns around just to face Ncecron warriors and is ripped into atoms by gauss rifles.
How do Necron Tomb Worlds awaken, well inevitably it starts with a Tech Priest turning to his Magos and asking, 'I wonder what'll happen if I press this button?'
They'll be wielding something worse than industrial grade egg-whisks and sink plungers. | 0:35 - So no Trazyn the Infinite, then? | 2:44 - So the Mechanicum makes the same mistake as the Dwarves in Khazad-dûm, over and over again? | 4:30 - (dances in celebration) | 12:07 - Either that or an Ork tactic. | 37:25 - That required a Blackstone Fortress crashing down to destroy.
Imagine growing up as a poor imperial citizen, suffer through hardship and exploitative labour for years.... and then someone hits the red no no button by accident and awakens a necron "sleeper cell" on that very "paradise" you happen to life on. The excitement and fun you can look forward too will be a wholesome experience for your entire family.
Would you consider doing a lore video on the Oldcrons (pre-5th ed codex) and contrast it to the more current stuff, I'd be very curious to hear your thoughts there?
The issue with Old Crons was that it was basically "What if Skynet was a Lovecraftian God?" Interesting concept but... We already have Tyranids as a "Hive Mind." Necrons lacked the fundamental flaw that other races in 40k have, which is "They can conquer the galaxy if everyone would just not be idiots." New Crons have that flaw but GW could have reconned the number of C'tan so there were thousands of them all competing with each other. I agree the new lore is better than the old though.
You got 2 parts Awakening and Recycling ♻️ Suffer too much casualties and your Resurrection can get jammed leaving your overlords and destroyers stuck behind millions of lower caste warriors.
@@Marinealver Hopefully there would be different Resurrection systems with different priorities. So the one for the Lord is placed in the middle of the elite wargear vault, the Destroyers are placed in locations with wide corridors so they have access, and the Resurrection systems for the Warriors are placed wherever fits
Loved the Necrons of the old codex, love them even more in the new.. so what if they seemed "boring".. Guass cannons go ZRRRP! and if played correctly, they dominate.
12:00 "Find out how many soldiers an enemy machine gun can kill, then just send more than that". -Luigi Cardona, Chief of Staff of the Italian Army during WW1. "OME, He is a genius." -General in Imperial Guard, probably.
Pretty sure he has a video detailing that already. It's a pretty well known subject cause it's one of the few things that make tyranids unique. From the genesteler cults sending out beacons and evacuating the planet. Shadow in the warp. Attrition war Ripper swarms Digestion pools And cappilary towers. Was all packed in 1 vid.
I hope you keep doing this for a long time Arch. Your storytelling, combined with a quib thrown in here and there, is really unique and makes listening to you very enjoyable.
scenario: lets assume for a moment that an imperial excavation unearthed a tomb. guard forces are called they open it up not knowing what it is. little kanoptek spiders come out of the tomb but dont attack leaving the men bewildered. they see the spiders scanning around their surroundings and picking up random rocks presumably metal content rich. the men gather up a team to enter the tomb and witness lifeless husks of machines lining all the walls. the spiders manned a forge that suddenly burst to life further into the tomb and you could see the spiders fashioning limbs and legs and most confusing of all metallic weapons. realizing what they may have found they think it could be some old factory they accidentally activated. going deeper they do not notice the subtle flash of green entering the eyes of the machines lining the wall. they reach the final chamber and see a large tomb door made of stone and two guards protected by a field of blue energy in stasis. just as they were about to turn around the tomb opens and they see a pharaoh like being arms crossed over each other rod in one hand sword in the other. the eyes glow bright green and look up to the interlopers. suddenly the blue fields fade and the machines begin attacking. the machines lining the walls behind them all come to life as they try to rush for the door hundreds of machines blocking their path. the soldiers outside hear the commotion inside and turn weapons raised to see a dark green glow from within. they hear the screams of their comrades dying as they recieve shots of green plasma disintegrating them. the Tomb has Awakened.
So can Necron tomb complexes and worlds expand beyond what they originally world? Like for instance a minor resource production fringe world given enough time might expand to a core world and pose an even greater threat or are they limited to fairly close to the capabilities they had previously? I figure you'd be pretty much stuck with the number of warriors you have but they could focus efforts on expanding their infrastructure and production capabilities and could possibly begin constructing void assets, ships orbital stations, etc.
Not really, most Necrons are limited in what they can learn. So you can’t train any new crews for those ships. But the space station with a lot of constructs and a few specialized Necrons to lead them in the construction and expansion of their current facilities.
Each warrior was a civilian when they were properly fleshy and alive. When you kill a Necron properly and prevent it from teleporting away for repairs, it is dead and gone for good. They will not be able to replace it. The Necron humanoid bots are shells for the consciousness of the people. They are not true robots. You kill the consciousness and you permanently reduce their available military.
@@Nempo13 makes a lot of sense, so once a tomb world completed reactivation of the residents that's all they have barring stuff like the scarab drones.

I remember in Soulstorm how it's lore that had the Imperial Survey Corps of the local system not been so lazy and corrupt and actually did their jobs properly, the Necrons on the third planet in the system likely would have woken up centuries before before the conflict of the game... and Imperial Scholors cannot decide if that is a sign of divine providence or gross negligence with some dumb luck thrown in.
I've been waiting for a long time on Necron lore, I must admit, I'm a necron fanboy, I'm honestly curious on the necrons and their super weapons, and who control which, and how do they measure when to use one or not.
Fun Fact: The new leagues of votann faction lore says the Votann dislike/hate the necrons because too often when they go digging for precious resources, they run into their tombs which in turn wakes them up and then have to then fight a protracted war against them.
Hmm I'm wondering if a neurons might be willing to make alliances with humans and other races in exchange for trade, and perhaps aide to restore their tomb worlds. I mean probably not. Considering that could be very interesting and 40k is often anathema to things that would be interesting, but it's a fun idea.
If I remember right there is some Necron dynasty that keeps humans as serfs which puts them on the extremely tolerant side of the spectrum, but that is as fair as I am aware of for stuff like that happening.
@@bewawolf19 hm? I am honestly kind of suprised by that. Becuase 40k often goes out of its way to have alien species be stupidly hostile to each other. Even when mutual cooperation would be in their best interests as a species
Currently writing a crusade campaign for my friend to play using my AdMech vs my Necrons, based around (unoriginally) the priests waking a tomb world. So, yeah, this video is gonna be great! 2:53 …oh, lol.
If I remember correctly there was one time a Necron Dynasty encroached on another Necron Dynasty and that group told everyone to get off it's lawn meaning Sending out a Necron world engine.
Do you think Trazyn the Infinite was the first major Necron to wake up? Did he witness the end of the Dark Age of Technology/Human Federation? Would he have any relics and artifacts from that era?
I have to say the video before this and this video are really clicking with me. I'd go so far as to say these are my favorite stand alone videos that you've made so far!
Can we talk more about how our short term perspective still has no idea what the macro goal is of the Necron is after they wake up and establish their empire? (a state they might not get to given the haphazard awakening) Arch mentioned it was originally to grab souls to feed the Star Gods, but now that no longer makes sense, what is the plan? Was there a plan? Do the shards still need to be fed? Was it an anti Chaos mission? Did it have anything to do with the reason they slept? Was this a way for the silent king to grant himself rest and his people "freedom?"
The Star Gods are the C'Tan, and the Necrons don't want anything to do with the Warp (they are realspace). Some thoughts about what the Necrons want are to defeat the Tyranid fleets that are still on the way to the Milky Way. The reason the Necrons went to sleep is because there were warp entities (Enslavers) getting loose, and the Necrons didn't like that. So the Necrons went into stasis, while th eOld ONes had to clean up the galaxy from the Enslaver plague. For anti-Chaos, check out the Necron ending for the game "Battlefleet Gothic II"

Now it's either the wipe you out, or they put you in a fish tank to pretend to be Necrontryr.
And sometimes it can really, really backfire. Say, they try that right as their Overlord and his guards are waking up.
@@matthewcoster5535 Its what Makes Necrons fun. They can be both monolithic or fractious. I have a lot of fun with that in my custom dynasty.
I've asked for this video several times for years now... thank you arch
Honestly I'm surprised Cadia wasn't a tomb world, or at least one of the planets in system.
I would actually feel bad for the robo skeles if they awoke on Cadia.
@@Flight_of_Icarus Another W for the Necrons. ALL HAIL THE INFINITE EMPIRE.
@@Flight_of_Icarus well, consider that the eldar's primary mode of interstellar travel is the webway. It only goes to select planets. So it's quite possible proximity is only really measured from their access to the webway. (Was there a webway portal on cadia? 🤔)
@@Flight_of_Icarus good point, but isn't it heavily implied that the whole Cadian gate thing is containment for the Eye of Terror, and of Necron construction?
Oh God now I see something. The first Necron Codex was the first part of the awakening process. The new one is about all the tomb world awakening.
Arch I’ve been listening to you ever since I came back from overseas when I was still with the marines in 2017
Please keep up the great work! 40k has been my escape and I look forward to more in the future! The Emperor protects!
So, what was it like being a real-life Imperial Guardsman?
Mostly boring, with short intense bursts of pants-shitting terror/action I assume...
@@The_Keeper lmao The imperial guard is more like the army and the marines are more like the catachin jungle fighters because we fight with anything sharp and with very little supplies lol
All jokes aside tho I don’t miss the government but I do miss my marines… The real brotherhood you can only get when you have no one but each other
Too many of my friends have dealt with suicide including myself…. It’s the struggle within that’s our biggest enemy

@trueblueprussian 23 recon marines or navy seals. I’ve had the pleasure of training with both so I can’t decide who hates their job more and wants to die lol us marines stole some seals lunch tables and they weren’t too happy about that. You should’ve seen the face of the kitchen staff! It was like a Mexican standoff without the guns lmao we just talked shit to each other and went our separate ways. But Good times tho :)
How many tomb worlds have woken up because a cat has knocked a cup off a table.
and these cats always survived the awakenings just to execute classic "Alien" jump scares.
"Dead men walking" is a great example of this playing out
They'll be wielding something worse than industrial grade egg-whisks and sink plungers.
Can you do a lore video on astropathic / interstellar communication and how it works for each faction imperium, chaos, eldar maybe?
Imagine growing up as a poor imperial citizen, suffer through hardship and exploitative labour for years.... and then someone hits the red no no button by accident and awakens a necron "sleeper cell" on that very "paradise" you happen to life on.
The excitement and fun you can look forward too will be a wholesome experience for your entire family.
"Guh-reetings and Salutations!"
When I hear that intro, I just smile. Less [Generic UA-camr Intro] and more [Generic Dad-talk Intro].
We already have Tyranids as a "Hive Mind." Necrons lacked the fundamental flaw that other races in 40k have, which is "They can conquer the galaxy if everyone would just not be idiots."
New Crons have that flaw but GW could have reconned the number of C'tan so there were thousands of them all competing with each other.
I agree the new lore is better than the old though.
They also made the C'Tan into shards, instead of full-power C'Tan entities
I prefer the new lore with them being actual characters
Necron tactical doctrine would be nice. Isn't a lot of Necron logistics handwaved with their magical super teleporters?
You got 2 parts
Awakening and Recycling ♻️
Suffer too much casualties and your Resurrection can get jammed leaving your overlords and destroyers stuck behind millions of lower caste warriors.
I want a video on how the Necrons view the Tyranids and how the Tyranids view the Necrons. It's something I've been wondering about for a long time.
I guess it is "fucking bugs" and confused hunger
Loved the Necrons of the old codex, love them even more in the new.. so what if they seemed "boring".. Guass cannons go ZRRRP! and if played correctly, they dominate.
I read the title as "Neocon" not "Necron" and it still made sense....
Nice to see you back on form arch, hope to enjoy many more hours of your signature narration.
I like to think that the awakening Necrons have the mentality of Carl from Aqua Teen Hunger Force.
"What happened to my freakin Tomb World!"

Perfect timing
Was just looking for some got tier background audio
Oh yes!! more Necron lore to consume with my morning coffee oh yes yes yes
Arch, the following reasons are why you are a good loretuber.
'Confrict...'
'Descwibe...'
Next up: how the Tyranids devour a world? Love your stuff as always Arch :)
Pretty sure he has a video detailing that already.
It's a pretty well known subject cause it's one of the few things that make tyranids unique.
From the genesteler cults sending out beacons and evacuating the planet.
Shadow in the warp.
Attrition war
Ripper swarms
Digestion pools
And cappilary towers.
@@lordfrostwind3151 Generally, keyword "Canoptic" indicates an autonomous drone - it's more than just Spiders and Scarabs these days.
Apparently the mechanicus game is canon via gw which to be said is a legit explorator fleet with a large detachment of skitarri and other machines cuz the crons we're expected to be there
I had a slip today and feel like I have the butchers nails but this will ease the hammering.
I just finished rewatching your Konrad video and what do I see? Very nice.
Whenever I think of Arch I think exactly the picture on the right. It just fits.
You can also use a fuel refinery and plot armor as an improvised fuel air bomb as Ciaphas Cain did to destroy a tomb complex
“Its waking up” is my favorite trope no matter whats waking up
Last time I was this early to a lore video, The Emperor still had a first name :)
This is the one Mr. Inquisitor, he is the one who wants to side with Xenos!

@@bewawolf19 hm? I am honestly kind of suprised by that. Becuase 40k often goes out of its way to have alien species be stupidly hostile to each other. Even when mutual cooperation would be in their best interests as a species
@@irontemplar6222 The Necrons are the tomb kings in space. So them keeping some humans around like their fantasy cousins isn't that surprising.
Ooooo necron lore on a friday?! Under promise and over deliver, as per usual Arch.
I've been on a Necron binge right now so this is a most welcome video.
"Oh mighty Szarekh, I have seen what your legions have done for other worlds, and I want that for me."

So, yeah, this video is gonna be great!
2:53 …oh, lol.
Our lord Arch asking the real questions!!
Really wanting to know the specifics of what happened on that tau world tbh
The Necrons seized the means of destruction
They all died.
If I remember correctly there was one time a Necron Dynasty encroached on another Necron Dynasty and that group told everyone to get off it's lawn meaning Sending out a Necron world engine.
Necrons are the goodguys in the 40k setting.
They just want their multiverse back.
Dude ur videos are bad ass
Keep up the good work
Arch, would you ever do a Mechanicus Playthrough? Great stuff as always!
Can the necrons make new warriors ? And if they can , without a necrontyr soul - would that make them just canoptek constructs ?
May the lore continue to flow, like the mightiest of rivers
Do you think Trazyn the Infinite was the first major Necron to wake up? Did he witness the end of the Dark Age of Technology/Human Federation? Would he have any relics and artifacts from that era?
Trazyn never fell entered the great sleep
More Necron stuff please! imo this is the best part of 40k. The Imperium of Man is probably my least favorite part

Arch: Uploads a warning about tomb worlds
Me, in the middle of technotheological 'debate' with Dogmatis Videx: "Yeah I'm just going to ignore that."
This is making me want to re-read dead men walking.
The whole "Tiny insignificant things" implies that I could in theory, take the wrong candy bar from the store and thus END THE WORLD.
aaaaaw yeah more necrons! I know what I will fall asleep to for the next couple of weeks!
How to deal with a fully awoken Tomb World?

I have to say the video before this and this video are really clicking with me. I'd go so far as to say these are my favorite stand alone videos that you've made so far!
Can you do the adeptus mechanicus please I am fascinated by the toasters
Can we talk more about how our short term perspective still has no idea what the macro goal is of the Necron is after they wake up and establish their empire? (a state they might not get to given the haphazard awakening)
Arch mentioned it was originally to grab souls to feed the Star Gods, but now that no longer makes sense, what is the plan?
