My whole friend group is really into godzilla & I hadn't watched any of the movies until my friends started having watch parties of the 2000's ones. Your breakdown of it all was really helpful & I can't wait to start watching & finally understanding all my friends' nerdy godzilla talk
James, you gotta do revamped version of Godzilla for beginners now that Godzilla Minus One and Godzilla X Kong The New Empire have been released, so you can further elaborate! Everything you do is phenomenal, and thank you for absolutely everything you provided all these years!
I saw Godzilla, I saw AVGN. I'm a simple man, I squeal in delight, then I press the like button and share this with all my brothers and sisters across the world. Spread that Big G love, y'all!!!
Funny story: Because I wanted a complete set of the Godzilla films (dvd was fine with me) I got a bootleg set. Not only did it include every movie and a bonus disc with some mini documentaries, but there was a section that was “Godzilla Film Reviews”. Out of curiosity, I put on and guess what? It was James Rolfe’s Godzillathon, in its entirety. James really is the expert on everything Godzilla if he gets bootlegged with the Godzilla movies.
I was impressed when I saw the 1954 original, was so dark and cruel! The actors really seem terrified and desperate. The classic soundtrack is amazing on it's own.
My dad was a big Godzilla fan with a bunch of toys, masks, soundtracks and VHS aswell as dvds. He got me into it super young with the nes game. It always brings me joy when you cover Godzilla because it reminds me of him and I see you in him kinda
I feel like the best way for casuals to get into Japanese Godzilla is starting with Shin Godzilla & Godzilla ‘54 in either order as well as Godzilla -1 now. For monster fighting GMK, Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla, & Tokyo SOS would probably be the best ones to watch after. Godzilla vs Destoroyah is also a must, one of the best movies & can act as a finale for basically any of the series
I have no interest in the series but I love hearing James talk about what he's passionate in. and because of him, i know way more than i should about these movies i've never seen 😂
Mine are Shin Godzilla Godzilla Tokyo SOS Godzilla’s Revenge (I know it’s bad but I think it’s hilariously bad) Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla (1976) Godzilla vs Destoroyah
As I understand, after Godzilla vs Kong next year, Toho is planning another reboot. Shin Godzilla stands totally alone, and isn't getting a sequel as far as I know. I guess Toho's new films will be the "Reiwa" series, seeing as that's the era name in Japan with Naruhito ascending to the throne.
Honestly, I feel like it kind of needs to be it's own separate thing. Like the original, it's a movie born out of tragedy, not really fit for blockbuster movie goers.
@@warbossgegguz679 True that makes a lot of sense tbh, Just thought it was a very interesting take on Godzilla with an interesting design and compared to the US version I could see him witch was nice.
@@SquinkyThreepwood my guess is supersizing Kong. It's mentioned in Skull Island that Kong is still young. That movie takes place in the 70s, so plenty of time for him to grow large enough to fight Godzilla in the present day.
The timeline is only a problem if you go into it expecting it to be coherent. Thing to remember is that except for the Heisei series they are all basically stand alone films. And even the Heisei series doesn't need to be watched in order. It just makes it a bit more cohesive.
Shin Godzilla is #1 on my list. I don’t think it drags at all. Yes it’s “talky” but I feel like it’s shot in such an interesting way and is so distinctly Japanese that it’s an awesome watch.
As a kid, I always got confused with the titles cause they always sounded the same. But I'm glad my dad introduced me to the movies, cuz now I'm a major fan. From elementary to even now, I'm glad to be a major fan still.
Shin Godzilla is my favorite because it went in such a drastically different direction, bringing back the allegories and political implications of the 1954 original. I also don't think it's that crazy for me to say that the atomic breath scene is just... beautiful. Maybe not as action packed as most movies in the series, but also a much more poignant film with more message than just "kaiju rumble time." Me and one of my friends watched it right after Pacific Rim and it was really cool to see such drastically different tones in (what are on paper) two very similar movie premises.
2) Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle for Earth 3) Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1990s) 3) Godzilla vs. Destoroyah 4) Godzilla 2000 5) Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S.
My introduction was Godzilla v. Mechagodzilla (the original) when I was six. I was instantly hooked! The Caesar chant was so spooky as a kid, and when he finally showed up he was wild to look at. Such a crazy movie, and very entertaining. Godzilla Minus One just came in as a crowning entry to the franchise, so much so that I would potentially even put it as the number one film to watch for beginners. At least number two behind the original. What a spectacle in theaters!
as a life-long Godzilla fan myself id say you nailed it. those five are great and i appreciate how varied you made this list as their are so many tough choices in my opinion.

My whole friend group is really into godzilla & I hadn't watched any of the movies until my friends started having watch parties of the 2000's ones. Your breakdown of it all was really helpful & I can't wait to start watching & finally understanding all my friends' nerdy godzilla talk
Godzilla is the bomb👌

"What a nice day"
I love these scripted videos about films!
Burn5 Solo James is best James
They're by far his best video's if you ask me.
Absolutely. These videos are gems.
Marvel has the most ambitious cinematic universe.
Godzilla: hold my beer.
To be FAIR at least Marvel is all in the same timeline and the accessibility is really easy. I did like the comment though
@@Psychoma99 toho planning to do a shared universe in 2021.
@@Roarrior. Hell yeah then I hope it turns out really good
@@Roarrior. oh fuck yes that sounds awesome
Remember kaiju fans, the new godzilla series coming. Its called "world of godzilla"
Funny story:
Because I wanted a complete set of the Godzilla films (dvd was fine with me) I got a bootleg set.
Are you kidding me, Shin Gojira the acting, the build up the talking, the realism. I love it!!!
It truly is a great time to be a Godzilla fan
Just by binging your Godzillathon videos I get all the information I need! Thank you James, you are awesome!
Thanks, man, this was perfect timing. I wanted to get into Godzilla but was pretty daunted. Thanks so much.
I started with Final Wars, I like insane!
I loved it for donald frye. god damn that mans moustache was on point. also beginning to end he was a badass.
Mr oneshot is a strait up legend.
Final Wars is one of my favorites - I used to joke that they should have titled it as "Godzilla whips everybody's ass" 😂
I saw the clip with the sum41 song and nuking Gino from a karl smallwood video, and yeah im down for some edgy insanity
INNNSAIINNNEEEEEEEE!!!
My son and I love "Son of Godzilla".. It's our favorite. We enjoy the cheesey dubbing, and practical effects. It just hits right
I was impressed when I saw the 1954 original, was so dark and cruel! The actors really seem terrified and desperate. The classic soundtrack is amazing on it's own.
Apocalyptico100 it is by far the most important and best Godzilla film.
My dad was a big Godzilla fan with a bunch of toys, masks, soundtracks and VHS aswell as dvds. He got me into it super young with the nes game.
It always brings me joy when you cover Godzilla because it reminds me of him and I see you in him kinda
James casually just dropping the fact that he can listen and understand japanese like no biggie
Wait, James knows japanese? Is he a weeaboo? Why else would he know japanese?
@@arte0021 He probably wanted the original Godzilla experience so he learn Japanese for that
I feel like the best way for casuals to get into Japanese Godzilla is starting with Shin Godzilla & Godzilla ‘54 in either order as well as Godzilla -1 now. For monster fighting GMK, Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla, & Tokyo SOS would probably be the best ones to watch after. Godzilla vs Destoroyah is also a must, one of the best movies & can act as a finale for basically any of the series
The Heisei series is incredible. Possibly excluding Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla, the Heisei series is occupied by one absolute banger after another.
I have no interest in the series but I love hearing James talk about what he's passionate in. and because of him, i know way more than i should about these movies i've never seen 😂
My top five are:
Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II
Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah
Godzilla vs. Destoroyah
Godzilla vs. Biollante
and the original
Mine are
Shin Godzilla
Godzilla Tokyo SOS
Godzilla’s Revenge (I know it’s bad but I think it’s hilariously bad)
Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla (1976)
Godzilla vs Destoroyah
Best 5 (for newcomers, not in general)
5. Godzilla (2014)
4: Shin Godzilla (2016
3: Gojira (1954)
2: Godzilla vs Biollante (1989)
1. Mothra vs Godzilla (1964)
1. Gojira 1954
2. Shin Gojira 2016
3. Gojira 1984
4. Gojira vs Space Gojira 1993
5. Gojira Final Wars 2004.
🙌😍😎👌😋
bacd 1990 Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla came out in 1994.
Late 80's and 1990's Godzilla is my favs too.
That's a real shame tbh Shin Godzilla was pretty interesting would of liked to of seen it continued.
Do we know if they're nerfing Godzilla or supersizing Kong?
@@SquinkyThreepwood my guess is supersizing Kong.
It's mentioned in Skull Island that Kong is still young. That movie takes place in the 70s, so plenty of time for him to grow large enough to fight Godzilla in the present day.
Just got back from seeing King of The Monsters, you're going to love it!
Angus Scrimm Nah.
Godzilla vs Megalon is THE BEST! Jet Jaguar is amazing and Gigan has always been my favorite!
He jock it made of steel, eats sushi from a pail...
rush1er I know right, I love the 70s ones
Ill never forget the flying kick
Kasia35 Godzilla 73?
Excellent thumbnail, excellent comment, you win
Back to the classics huh?
And yes these movies' time line is a total and complete clusterfuck
The 8th Wonderer, jet jaguar punch punch punch!!!
The timeline is only a problem if you go into it expecting it to be coherent. Thing to remember is that except for the Heisei series they are all basically stand alone films. And even the Heisei series doesn't need to be watched in order. It just makes it a bit more cohesive.
@@koloth5139 Heisei era story line is glorious and has a beautiful bittersweet Ending in Godzilla vs Destroya
I like Godzilla's Saturday morning cartoon style of continuity where the movies are like awesome interchangeable episodes.
Shin Godzilla is #1 on my list. I don’t think it drags at all. Yes it’s “talky” but I feel like it’s shot in such an interesting way and is so distinctly Japanese that it’s an awesome watch.
I don't think so either, but for some newcomers it might.
Been a fan since your Godzillathon reviews! This makes me so happy!!!
"(Godzilla '98) is not that bad of a movie."
THANK YOU.
I liked Final Wars for 2 reasons. 1 it has Sum 41, and 2 the OG Godzilla destroys the 98 Godzilla with no challenge.
It's also like doing a bump of coke. Such a fucking insane film, definitely one of best animes ever made
Ehh
Zilla
So you like 1 scene, cuz both happen at the same time 😂
Godzilla 1954 is just a classic. There are many good Godzilla movies, but 54 should absolutely be your introduction

This series should definitely continue. This has really helped me, because I’ve wanted to get into Kaiju films for a while now. So thanks James!
I've watched EVERY godzilla movie in existence, I love them all. Nostalgia IS indeed real.
I’ve been a G fan for a long time, and this is perfect for new comers. Well done James
MF DOOM made an album based completely on godzilla films, and wow it’s great.

3.) Godzilla vs King Ghidorah
4.) Godzilla Tokyo SOS
5.) Godzilla Final Wars
2) Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle for Earth
3) Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1990s)
3) Godzilla vs. Destoroyah
4) Godzilla 2000
5) Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S.
(1 Godzilla 2014
(2 Godzilla gain the monsters all out attack
(3 Godzilla king of the monsters
(4 Gojira (1954)
(5 Ghidorah the three-headed monster
That's an interesting list: I'm curious, why do you prefer Terror to the original Mechagodzilla?
Really I think that’s just your opinion
@@jasongray6698 Like James said, you're gonna hear different opinions everywhere you go.
I think I love Godzilla a little *too* much...It's bordering on an obsession. I have an entire room dedicated to Godzilla figures and memorabilia.
It can never be too much when it comes to Godzilla man! He's like....80 stories tall and prone to rampaging lol jk 😂
It's not obsession, it's just that "there is a little bit of Godzilla in all of us...."
For our king!
I’ve never been a Godzilla fan. Thank you for wasting your time to educate people like me on these movies. I knew you’ve been always a fan so I couldn’t wait to listen to this. Keep up the hard work! You’re the man!
I love whenever James gets to talk about things he is genuinely passionate about
Sending much Godzilla love your way, fellow James
Godzilla 2014 is a masterpiece of the genre imo - even better than the new one. Coming from a 15 year Godzilla fan, I find it absolutely stunning
Thank you James. I've been trying to find a decent way to tell people how to start with Toho Kaiju...
Now if you could do Ultraman, Kamen Rider, and Super Sentai that would be greeeat...
Easy: watch Ultraman, laugh at people who watch Kamen Rider and Super Sentai.
For Kamen Rider, I just ask if there's a theme they like... In all likelihood, there's a Kamen Rider for that.
@@KougajiCalling yeah. example: I prefer the darker stuff, hence my 2 suggestions.
@@thewhiteskull4003 No. If you're old enough to write a comment, you're old enough to change your own diapers.
