I see that many people here are confused about the fact that even though there are some positives to taking flax seed, my teacher, Vaidya Rama Kant Mishra's family lineage of Ayurveda, which dated back for 5,000 years were opposed to eating them. It might be a hard concept for some to comprehend, but there are certain foods which create heat, such as chilis, seeds, nuts, garlic, onions, and then there are some that create cooling in the body, such as zucchini, yellow squash, lauki squash, watermelon, cucumbers and grapes. In this video I am especially describing the fact that whatever you swallow, your liver has to digest it. According to Ayurveda, the digestive organs all contain some heat, or digestive fires (agni) as it is called. The stomach contains one fire, however, the liver is a very large organ and it contains five digestive fires. In this day and age the liver is overheated from so many chemicals that it was not designed to handle: we have allowed the use of over 80,000 chemicals in our environment, food, air and water. This includes pharmaceuticals and synthetic nutraceuticals -- all these toxins the liver has to process and as a result it is overheated in 99% of the population at this point. The problem is that all nuts and seeds contain some heat and they have this effect on the liver to warm it up a bit. However, flax seeds are considered the most heating, to the point where yes, while they may have some health benefits as mentioned in many of these comments, they also have a very strong heating effect on both the liver and the spleen, which most people are not aware of. I made this video to give you fair warning, that while you may be benefitting from the use of flax seeds (and this includes flax oil), over time your liver and spleen might heat up, however when you develop a health problem from it, you might not be aware that it is coming from a malfunctioning liver which is literally overheating and not capable of performing some of its 500 jobs as well as it should.
In Ayurveda, "heating" (ushna) refers to the energetic quality or virya of a substance, which doesn't directly correlate with modern understanding of inflammation. The heating quality in Ayurveda can refer to: Digestive Effects: Helps stimulate agni (digestive fire) Promotes better absorption Aids in breaking down other foods Metabolic Effects: Increases circulation Promotes movement of nutrients Helps in tissue transformation Scientific evidence shows flax seeds are anti-inflammatory, due to the Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), Lignans, and antioxidants This is a good example of how traditional Ayurvedic classifications don't always align with modern biochemical understanding
I agree and the approaches cannot always be translated. The differential diagnosis is completely different. Also, alcohol and refined sugar cause heat too. There are different kinds of heat and they affect the body very differently. That said, Ayurveda has a very nuanced understanding of these elemental concepts and how they interface with different tissue layers and blood components, etc that aren't mapped out the same in western models.
Ayurveda does not prohibit flex seed. In fact on the inset of winters almost every house hold makes preparations with flax seeds for use through out winters. Of course they don’t eat pure Flax, it is always mixed with other ingredients.

I’ve read dozens and dozens of articles on Flaxseed. Not one of these articles ever stated anything that this Doctor is stating. Other than not overdoing the amount of flaxseed that you consume, the facts shown and the opinions, from Medical and Nutrition experts have shown a definite positive to flaxseed. Like almost everything we consume, the key is moderation.
I put a desert spoon of flaxseeds in the coffee grinder and have it in my smoothie everyday. I guess if you were to consume them as a meal as stated in this video you would have reactions but that could be said about many foods. Common-sense and moderation in most things is a good philosophy that I live by.
Indians have been including flaxseeds in their diet since thousands of years. Every household makes flaxseed laddus in winter. And roasted flaxseed powder is added to veggies and rice and curry. We are all fine.
Yes, you're right it is eaten in 'Winter' because of its heating properties and not all year long like today's craze over flax seeds. When foods are eaten seasonally and for your body type they do not harm.
@@aratiullal9201 exactly. That's the problem in modern diets. Doctor, you are talking about an extreme example where a person ate Flaxseeds as the main food because nothing else was available. Obviously that is seriously wrong. Never do such things. Flax seeds are warm in nature and increases Pitta. I know it by testing on my own body when I went through a serious aggravated Pitta condition. But sesame seeds are worst, they are very heating. I could not eat it for many years!! Combining flax seeds with pumpkin and sunflower seeds, and eating about 1 tablespoon regularly especially in the morning breakfast is absolutely fine. 🙏
I did some research myself on flaxseeds and according to the information I found that they are only dangerous in large amounts and in fact 1 study claimed 50 grams a day safe. It seems to me the benefits of flaxseeds far outweigh the dangers.

I tried flax seed oil but I could never guarantee it didn't go rancid before I finished the bottle.
Flax oil, made from flax seeds, goes rancid very easily. That's why I stopped using it. Whole flax seeds can pass through your digestive system undigested, so you won't get all the nutritional benefits. Of course neither of these things matter if you don't eat flax seeds in the first place. Dr. Teitelbaum did say that flax seeds are high in ALA and Vitamin C, and Omega-3s, iron, B1, copper and molybdenum.
I did not know that flax seeds are heating to the liver and spleen, but when I worked in health stores, my collogue mentioned that one reason flax seeds are not good is because of the ratio of the omegas. They are too high in omega 6 and 9 and too low in omega 3. Long term use can cause inflammation. Hemp seeds are good as the ratio between the omegas is well balanced. Hope this helps you.

Dr Marianne Thank you for this video. Can you please tell me if the same goes for animals. A holistic vet recommends ground flax seed as one of the natural ways to help your dog if it has constipation, by sprinkling a bit on food or mixing with water. About half a teaspoon.
I really believe this is true.Everytime I add flaxseeds, even a small amount to my green smoothies,I do not feel well, and end up in the ER.I seem to get very dehydrated from the flax seeds.
It's because you are making green smoothies and your body is already under stress digesting whatever it is you are putting in your body, your gut needs to constantly repair itself and the bacteria inside it, you could try a probiotic and introduce flaxseeds gradually. But keep a balance of proteins, salts, fats and vitamins in your diet.
Some of the signs and symptoms that you may encounter if you have excess heat would be redness on your skin, burning sensations, swelling (weight gain) and loss of function. For most of us it’s about quantity and the season you eating heating foods (best is winter) and also the state of your liver. If your liver is functioning properly the first two still apply. I have just created a video on anti inflammatory hacks 90% of people are not doing. Because of the difference between an Ayurvedic approach.
This is true. It's also true that for many foods there have been multiple controlled studies that demonstrate the health promoting or harmful effects of foods and food-like substances.

THANK YOU DOCTOR MARIANNE ❤ I JUST STARTED ADDING THOSE IN MY DIET TO LOWER CHOLESTEROL 😢 PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT SHOULD I USE TO LOWER MY CHOLESTEROL..
High total cholesterol does not have health risks associated with it - just try to keep your triglycerides below 70. Lowering your insulin levels by keeping your carbohydrate intake low is your best bet. Also avoid cooking oils that aren't cold-pressed or expellar-pressed.... Don't eat anything deep fried....
Flax seeds are great in almost every single aspects please don't listen to bs like this but in addition to that you can also use oats and mushrooms which have beta glucans also just try to get in as much soluble fiber in general and try swapping out saturated fats (except for stearic acid) for polyunsaturated fats in nuts, seeds and fish
So have some Eclipta/Bhringaraja. It cools the liver, least in Chinese medicine, and I suspect Ayurvedic. Flax is helpful for me since I have leaky gut (SIBO probably) and psyllium and many others give me constipation, but flax helps promote bowel movements. Triphala didn’t work either.

I’ve always hated flax seeds and for that reason only never used them. I have however been consuming a lot of store bought crakers made with various nuts and seed, including flax seeds as regular bread is not so good for me. Considering having Hashimoto and being medicated for this for me at years I’ve come to understand that liver healt and function is crucial.
I avoid all meats, fish, seafood and dairy products and eat a mostly plant-based diet. My one exception to plant-based eating is eggs. Nobody dies or is harmed by eating unfertilized eggs. So, I was adding flaxseed meal to my oats in the morning to get enough EFAs. But switching to 2 pasture-raised organic eggs every day will supply all the essential fatty acids my body needs, right?
It's complex and depends as there are different forms of estrogen but short answer is flaxseeds contain phytoestrogens or plant estrogens called lignans. Lignans can modulate estrogenic activity in the body, meaning that they have a hormone balancing effect. It really depends on the individual, they may provide estrogenic support when levels are low and have anti-estrogenic effect when levels are high. This happens because they compete for the same receptors.

It doesn't matter what form or whatever we consume "milk" or "ghee" in because it's wrong in any event and I dare say when you're not a cow calf, goat kid or lamb etc it'd be highly imbalancing to pretend we're those baby animals. Flaxseed, in raw mode, must not be taken more than one spoon in powder form. It's much more better to use cold pressed flaxseed oil as your cooking medium.
The examples used to verify why one shouldn't eat flax seeds are extremely anectodal and not representative of more common examples of moderate flax seed consumption...an ounce or 2 at a time sprinkled throughout the week.
I have had a really bad throat clearing phlegm problem for 7 years. The one thing I have consistently done is take digestive enzymes with every meal. My question is, do Supplemental Digestive Enzymes heat the Liver? Since enzymes are active and split things and break things down it seems like their energetic would be high fire element. Could the phlegm be Kapha's response to the over generated heat from the Digestive Enzymes?

Traditionally we eat sesame and flax seed in very moderate quantity( 1 tea spoon) by making a chutney which we consume mixing it with oil in daily meal.
It appears that the provided information is incomplete, as there are certain facts missing. While flaxseed is generally considered warming in nature, it is important to note that excessive consumption can have adverse effects. Growing up in India, flaxseed products were commonly used, particularly during the winter months. However, it is advisable to reduce consumption during the summer season. As a vegan, flaxseed has become an integral part of my diet. I have been incorporating it into my daily routine for nearly two decades, and I have not experienced any negative health consequences.
Sunflower seeds are contraindicated for Blood tyoe B. I have been eating flaxseed in small amounts for the estrogenic benefits. What are alternatives for that? I’m off soy as well. As a blood type B, I do well with dairy and drink, whole grass fed milk whenever I can get it. But avocado is another avoid for blood type B. Blood tyoe distribution varies in different cultures based on whether the diet helps or hurts the different immune responses and other genetic differences. Diet advice may come from cultures that may be all the same blood type and not appropriate for people whose ancestry is different. But Bs are nomads and in the minority, so I’m always curious and determined not to be given merely average advice when I know I’m probably not average.

But keep a balance of proteins, salts, fats and vitamins in your diet.
Every time you consume flaxseeds you end up in the ER? I guess you're not very bright to do it more than once.
Exchange flaxseeds with psyllium husk. I put it in my millet porridge.
Hi Marianne are you saying not to take milk thistle? What about Tudca? What should be taken for l8ver detoxification then?thanks
What do you make of the evidence for flax seeds lowering blood pressure please?
Thanks for the reminder. A good example in your teacher's story.
Great info thank you 🙏
Thanks. How about Flex Seed oil? Same?
How do I know if my liver is overheated or too cold?
Great question
Thank you very much for thos emlightening content!
Thank You Dr Teitelbaum!
Eat this eat that 5:32 this is good this is bad. Does anyone agree????? Nope!!
So many conflicting messages from different sources 🥱
This is true. It's also true that for many foods there have been multiple controlled studies that demonstrate the health promoting or harmful effects of foods and food-like substances.
There is another option for you personally...
Thanks!
We have been eating flaxseed chutney for ages!! Javas chutney with garlic , salt , chilli powder. But we have to eat only a teaspoon and adding oil and roasting them and then crushing into a powder ..
This is super interesting 😊
What about chia?
@@eleanorsendeavors29how can you make so many wrong statements in 1 comment
Flax seeds are great in almost every single aspects please don't listen to bs like this but in addition to that you can also use oats and mushrooms which have beta glucans also just try to get in as much soluble fiber in general and try swapping out saturated fats (except for stearic acid) for polyunsaturated fats in nuts, seeds and fish
@@kackkiste Nope they are not. They are hot in potency and should not be consumed by people with liver inflammation and/or pitta dosha.
@@kackkiste It is you that is mistaken, but I see your mind is already closed, that’s a pity 🫣
I take flax seed oil supplement. Is that just as damaging?
Not at all. Flax seeds as well as flax seed oil is not harmful. She is spreading mis information
Mam are you going to upload more of the knowlege of dr.mishra😢😢😢😢😢😢we need it
Interesting, thank-you so much for the information.
Flax can help with cool liver .. SIBO may thrive in a "cool" condition.
Is this verified by tests done on the liver ?
I tried flaxseed, my body reaction was very negative. Consider it as this testing.
You can use flaxseed external as a poltice.
For example a hot poltice on the liver area.
What about grounded up flax?
Great information, thank you. I eated too much sesame, sadly. Flax seed oil is also not good, I assume.
What about flaxseed meal???
How do they diagnose a hot liver?
thank you!
i had no idea ...
How do you know if your liver is hot?
Feel hot and being in sun for long makes you offish
In TCM medecine, some symptoms are : pimples, lips ulcers, rashes and skin eruptions, constipation, etc ..
@suzananda I only really have the last one. Been dealing with it for decades.
You know that your liver is "hot", when the spleen, the intestines and your stomach, all want to date the liver!🤣
@suzananda according to TCM what diet reduces liver heat ?
what about Budwig Protocol?
I wish you would get a better microphone Dr. Teitelbaum. I listen often to your lectures, but as I am hearing impaired I struggle a lot to hear what you are saying and I also miss much. I do also listen to other videos without any problem.
Use the CC option.
Does chia seed have the same deleterious effect?
I’ve always hated flax seeds and for that reason only never used them. I have however been consuming a lot of store bought crakers made with various nuts and seed, including flax seeds as regular bread is not so good for me. Considering having Hashimoto and being medicated for this for me at years I’ve come to understand that liver healt and function is crucial.
Dr. Marianne What about chia?
I avoid all meats, fish, seafood and dairy products and eat a mostly plant-based diet. My one exception to plant-based eating is eggs. Nobody dies or is harmed by eating unfertilized eggs. So, I was adding flaxseed meal to my oats in the morning to get enough EFAs. But switching to 2 pasture-raised organic eggs every day will supply all the essential fatty acids my body needs, right?
Does this recommendation include flax seen oil as well?
Does flaxseed increase estrogen in females
It's complex and depends as there are different forms of estrogen but short answer is flaxseeds contain phytoestrogens or plant estrogens called lignans. Lignans can modulate estrogenic activity in the body, meaning that they have a hormone balancing effect. It really depends on the individual, they may provide estrogenic support when levels are low and have anti-estrogenic effect when levels are high. This happens because they compete for the same receptors.
My mom's tumor is estrogen positive. Should I give her flaxseed or not? @@ardentlyverdant1855
Do flax seeds have phytoestrogens, if so can they affect thyroid?
I have looked into several reputable ayurvedic sources, and no one seems to agree with you. Granted, there are some people that can be adjusting a lot of unnatural food items and have an unhealthy liver, but for those who eat well and have a healthy liver, flex is an excellent addition to the diet
Hey, thank you. You and right they don't look at that what happens after they are eaten.
What about the famous Budwig anti-cancer protocol,:
Fermented dairy product (qvark, cottage cheese, kefir etc) mixed together with freshly ground flaxseed & flax oil???
It is way healthier than modern diet nowaday, no surprise that people feel better. But if you go on a long terme, some imbalance may occur. According to TCM medecine this has too Cooling effects, may be the heating effect of flaxseed counteract the cooling of dairy products ?
Thanks
Many years a go ..I was advised by ayurvedic doctor In Melbourne that best oil for massage is cold press sesame oil as well to rinse mouth first thing in the morning ..is is wrong ?
It is absolutely correct from an ayurvedic doctor/vaidya
Do you have any actual science to back up any of this? Link to studies?
In the West we're taught to consume small amounts of flax seeds. I could understand your warning about them but considering you recommended we consume other species' infants' foods i think you may want to reevaluate everything.
It doesn't matter what form or whatever we consume "milk" or "ghee" in because it's wrong in any event and I dare say when you're not a cow calf, goat kid or lamb etc it'd be highly imbalancing to pretend we're those baby animals. Even ghee is menacing to the lymphatic system and disastrous to the body and mind
Your videos are great
I take 3 tablespoon grounded flaxseed every day with warm milk. So should i stop it????
Has your liver 'heated' yet? 😊
But seriously, how do you feel?
In India we eat 1 teaspoon of flaxseeds only or even sesame is in 1 teaspoon only in winters .. if from a cold country u like India you can eat thru the year I guess I am not a Ayurvedic’s dr
@OrMon-r5f i feel the same
I think they taste good. I mix with yogurt. Didn’t realize that I shouldn’t be doing this.
When I was a teenager I dad temporarily moved to rural areas to grow some cereals. Because there was no food around to buy or cook, we carried a lot of potatoes and crashed flaxseeds. We ate them for almost 3 months day n night. Now I am 65. And I often do health chk ups. But the result shows no problem w my liver n spleen though I am diabetic. So, if it is so dangerous, why I am still alive?
You do know there were studies done on why many sex workers were not getting HIV in the early 90s. Just because they didn't get it doesn't mean it didn't exist. Hope that helps
Thais is note consensus in Ayurvedic medicine.
Flaxseed, in raw mode, must not be taken more than one spoon in powder form. It's much more better to use cold pressed flaxseed oil as your cooking medium.
Dr Marianne, us ut safe to yse flaxgel on scalp?
On actual measurements or results stated ...
Overnightoatsstyle ??? 🤔🤔
The examples used to verify why one shouldn't eat flax seeds are extremely anectodal and not representative of more common examples of moderate flax seed consumption...an ounce or 2 at a time sprinkled throughout the week.
She is not exactly ' a picture of health' herself unfortunantely !
Nope they dont.
But what about flaxseed oil. I take flaxseed oil with yogurt?? Thank you for your wonderful videos
Flaxseed oil with yogurt is little better
thank you
You forget India is very hot country, therefore people avoid taking hot Ayurvedic herbs. But in winter they eat flax & sesame seed laddos, people in west live in a cold climate so it’s doesn’t have same effect, so they should put this into context!
I regularly soaked a tbspn of flaxseeds in water overnight and consumed them, until one day, they made me quite ill. I’ve not tried it again since. What about chia seeds?
Chia are fine, but ditch the flaxseeds.
You’re suppose to grind flaxseeds.
I think there is something to it re the heat for the liver. I started drinking ground flax see in my morming tea for chronic constipation. I feel though that I’ve gained weight and my liver is „aching“ from time to time. Any suggestions for change or alternatives?
@renatehepher6368 2 tabs soaked chia seeks and 1-2 Kiwi fruit a day for chronic constipation
Traditionally we eat sesame and flax seed in very moderate quantity( 1 tea spoon) by making a chutney which we consume mixing it with oil in daily meal.
Depending upon body type and main dosha, still its true that flaxseed torture the liver in the long run so restricted usage is recommended.
Interesting.
I've been advised to take this oil often. But i just couldn't.
I would buy it and take the first dose maybe then it would sit in the fridge for the next year until I threw it out haha 😄
What should I do as i suffer from epilepsy and recently angina. I have been taking milk thistle. So what in place of that?
