Hi! This video is *officially* outdated, less two months after it released. Yippee. I decided I will keep track of new Pixar shorts and write quick reviews of them HERE in this comment! My Letterboxd list also keeps track of the updated ranking, so check that out! boxd.it/p1Q3E Self (2024) I would put this between 22 vs. Earth and Hawaiian Vacation. The animation style is… half cool, half kinda cheap looking. I think it’s really interesting to see Pixar experiment with this different style, but narratively this one is super weak. A lot of the less good SparkShorts end up feeling like “baby’s first metaphor.” There’s nothing explicitly wrong with this, and for children it’s a good way to be introduced to theme, but it’s not for me. I prefer the more nuanced stuff the company is more than capable of.
short films are so essential to getting such incredible stories out without having to go through all the hurdles and hoops of securing a feature length movie budget. A lot of animated films loose their sparkle from concept to finished product to stay on the "safe side", which is why experimental short films mean so much to me!
49:46 Actually since Soul, Turning Red, and Luca are all getting released in theaters, they’ve confirmed their shorts would play with them. So not only will these great movies finally go to theaters, but their shorts will too!
oh my god wait where does it say their shorts will play in theatre?? lucas my favourite movie and seeing ciao alberto in theatre as well would be SO cool
Wanted to mention, but you used trauma bonding wrong in the kitbull segment! People get this wrong alot, but a trauma bond is actually when an abuser causes trauma, and uses that to bond with a victim
Oh gosh, I’m so sorry. I should’ve looked into that before I said it. I’ve only ever heard it used the context that I said it in, so yeah, it does seem that people use it incorrectly quite often. Great to know, and again, many apologies. Thank you for correcting me!
It’s impossible for me to not tear up when I see anything related to Kittbull 😭😭 even if I think about it too long my eyes start to sting… it’s such a good short
Fun fact: my parents got my sister and I's births taped and at the end of each of them, for whatever reason, they included a Pixar short with music over it. Specifically, the Adventures of Andre and Wally B played at the end of hers and Luxo Jr. played at the end of mine. Why? No clue, and I would never have even known that those were Pixar shorts if it weren't for this video, so thank you for that
Man show Dreamworks some respect. You can't say they're not good when they've made masterpieces like Kung Fu Panda, HTTYD, the new Puss in Boots, Prince of Egypt, etc.
Say what you will about the Cars franchise... ... but when he is lyin', he is cryin'. This was a great watch and I think your channel has a bright future ahead of it. Shorts are such an underrated format of storytelling, I appreciate this a lot
If anyone goes to Disneyworld PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE go to the Pixar/disney animation festival! It’s beautiful, Piper and Feast were shown in 3D and the 3D was actually legit too. But the music and lighting they do is amazing. I sobbed rewatching Feast in that form. I adore Feast and the story with it. It shows the dog starting with nothing and how his relationship with his owner is everything. With time however, the dog begins to become greedy with food and loses focus on the man’s happiness. He’s so upset over how things are changing even though his owner is so happy. Once it clicks that his owner was hurt and depressed, he knew he wanted to sacrifice something of themself for someone who gave them everything. I’m the end, the changes wind up being good. The ending just brings this smile to my face and I sob at the ending at how happy they all are together.
There's a swedish live action movie from 2007 called *"Pirret"* that's got p much the same premise as "Float", but it's expanded on more since it's a feature length film. I dunno the english title for the film, but the swedish title directly translates to "the jitter" (which sounds alot less positive than it's supposed to be, think more like... having butterflies in your stomach or buzzing with excitement. bc kid floats when she's happy) You should check it out if you can find it with subtitles.
While I do really like La Luna my favorite Pixar short film is hands down Kitbull. It's the only Pixar short (and I've seen most of them) that, to this day, has made me cry. I love it so much 🥰
ok i am a huge fan of you and a huge fan of pixar shorts BUT I LOVEEEDDD MATERS TALL TALESSSSSSS WHEN I WAS LITTLE. as soon as that "if im lyin im cryin" CAME ON I GASPED BECASUE IT TRANSPORTED ME BACK TO THE PAST
On the note on the ending for everyone watching- YT is chock full of short films from smaller animation studios or college students and some of them actually slap. Just search ' animated short films' and rabbit hole away. On the rankings- La Luna is also my fave but I do want to fight you a little on Nona I loved that short
I dropped an apparently scalding-hot, god-awful take recently which was: most of the time I end up liking the short film that plays before a Pixar movie better than the movie. Which for some movies, it wasn’t an awful take, like Piper is definitely better than finding Dory, there wasn’t much contention about that. But the hot part of this take was that I liked Lava more than inside out. I got home from the movie theater after watching inside out and all I would talk about was Lava. I really wasn’t that upset when bing bong died because I was still recovering from lava, and that statement made several people mad at me.
When I went to go see Elemetal this summer they played a short before hand. It was Carl's Date (28:00) and to be honest, I think I liked it more than Elemetal. (Lava is one of my favorite shorts
@@tiannagraham5210 I found the characters very shallow, especially Riley (which made it really hard to care about anything to do with her), and the emotions honestly felt too simplified, even at the end, and even for a children's movie.
im happy a lot of my favorites as a kid ranked high like mike's new car, your friend the rat, jack jack attack, for the birds, and partly cloudy! i also really liked knick knack as a child, idk maybe the music had a big thing to do with it but something about it just really charmed me. i also love snowglobes and souveniers like in the short so that may be another reason i used to watch them always cause i had the shorts collection and in the car i'd always play them over and over
0:06 I had that DVD too! Though some memories of it are not the fondest sadly😞 when I was a kid our car had a DVD player and I remember watching that DVD in the car on the way to the hospital to visit my grandpa with my family. It was the last time I saw him before he passed so when I think of that DVD I always think of that day. Like I still remember very clearly my mom taking my hand to walk us into the hospital and me jumping up and down like I was the sheep in Boundin' and singing the song from the short
Air Mater isn’t a tie in for planes, it released before. The movie was inspired by the short. He says “if I’m lyin’ I’m cryin’” because they’re tall tales
This has unlocked a memory for me...I genuinely didn't remember that "Bound'" and "One Man Band" existed until now and now I'm vividly aware of them once again.
You take that back right now! Smash and Grab isn't that bad. It's two gay robots overthrowing their oppressors. Give the gay robots their day in court! My non-joke take is that Smash n Grab is actually is pretty good. I love how both robots are designed and their little functions. I like how they are built for labor, shackled to their labor, and yet they escape using the tools of their oppressors, and survive by sharing their power source and working together. Plus I watched it a lot while teaching a class on character design, and seeing their little robot bodies, and in particular the very crunchy sound design made me like a lot. Now that I have presented my case I expect an apology and for you to grant Smash n Grab it's rightfully place in this ranking. If not you will be hearing for my lawyers. (And you will hear them coming, I couldn't afford human lawyers, so it's just a pack of wolves I managed to put suits and ties on. If you hear howling that means they are approaching)
I had an entire DVD full of these short films that I would always play on one of those portable car movie player things that attach to the back of the driver car seat during long road trips. Peak childhood right there.
I love Boundin' cause when I watched it as a kid it really like mentally helped me out. I wasn't the happiest kid and by the time I saw Boundin' it just really hit me and I think now it's because the message I ended up getting from it is even at my worst there's like still hope for me and a chance for me to get back up again. It's probably just when I watched it but it made me feel better about myself and for that I think that's why I really love it lol
I remember at the start of the pandemic, I became really obsessed with short films and while sometimes I was too young to be able to understand the deeper meaning behind them (it's not like the subject was too mature, I was just kinda stupid and I didn't really look deeper), I still really enjoyed watching the plot unfold and admiring the animation. I like the fact that 'There's A Man In The Woods' (if it's considered a short film idk) became popular on tiktok, even though I was kinda gate-keepy about it, I think these animators and story writers deserve recognition. I also found it very cool that the people making these animated short films were uni students because, at the time, I wanted to become an animator. Long story short, I love animated short films and I think they need to get popular again because I miss that reaction channel era
Ok so my Grandma had a collection of these that me and my siblings would watch whenever we went over. This was like watching my childhood be ranked. Thank you so much for reminding me of these!
I haven't been paying attention to Pixar shorts for years now, and was not only delighted to see some of my childhood favorites I had forgotten, but also to learn that there were a few really cool sounding ones in the top 10 that were hitherto unknown to me 😮

Seriously, where is all of this hate COMING from?!! Why have I never seen anybody hate the short THIS much before??? I rewatch it all the bloody time! Also. . . . . .no. To all of what you just said. Quite frankly, I’ve always found this short to be about how important it is to have a lot of self-respect and NOT to let others ruin your happiness/cut you down. Has anybody here watched the same short that I have???
ngl i so look forward to seeing what random nugget of pop culture you're talking about each video, it either unleashes a wave of horrific nostalgia or bizarre curiosity
fun (??) fact about knick knack! there's an original version where the lady figurine has comically oversized titties and it looks as bad as you'd expect A+ list & video!! my personal favorite is for the birds
13:09 I’m actually so fr rn, but I used to go to a Christian elementary school, and there was this one annoying ass song about being yourself, and this fugly animation clip played under it. It’s horrendous.
50:01 I just had a sudden memory of how my ex husband used to point out the weird bird in the short and say "that's you, Jenni! You're weird and no one likes you" 😮🤦♀️😅

la luna is my favorite too, my second favorite is probably piper. i haven't seen or even heard of a lot of the newer ones on this list, but i remember they used to air all the older ones [80s-early 2000s] back to back on abc family when i was a kid and i would always get so excited for that.
The amount of live action, animated and documentary that haven’t got significant film distribution or film restorations is shocking. Looking at the many nominations of the Academy Award short films and BAFTAs especially outside of Disney, Pixar, Warner Bros and Aardman Animations.
I’m sad you ranked Mike’s new car so low, that is legit in my top 5 Pixar shorts and it kills me with laughter every time I see it 😂 but I love that you had La Luna and Burrow at the top since they are excellent as well ❤ another great video from you Max, keep up the good work! 💖✨
Okay like, I get why Boundin' it's not for everyone, but it was my favorite as a child because I loved to jump and I thought the sheep kinda looked like me with the bigass nose and shit haha, I never really thought about it looking kinda wonky because yeah, it looks weird but I always thought it was charming... idk I also found myself coming back to it constantly and resonating with the message, and sometimes even crying to it, so, yeah. It was my favorite until Bao showed up to the party xD
My parents just divorced, and I'd like to say from the deepest of my heart thank you. These videos are extremely calming in some way to me. I can tell that you have put in so much dedication to these videos. I think that you deserve more subscribers. The content is amazing, you are an incredibly funny person. Keep on making amazing content!
Finally someone who doesn't hate Brave! I know it's not the best movie but I loved it as a kid and I really liked seeing Merida and her mom grow closer together.
I absolutely loved Purl when I was younger. The animation style was nice to me, stopmation and stuff. I didn’t understand the message when I was younger, but now I think the message is amazing now. oh and also, I loved (and love) kitbull as well!
Lovely lovely ranking!rarely do I see Pixar shorts being thoroughly discussed. Personally, I am quite fond of all the pre-toy story Pixar shorts, especially the adventures of André and Wally b; people usually dismiss this short bc it’s was basically a cgi test but…honestly? I just think it’s warm and lovely, the character designs were basically just shapes stuck one on top of the other due to restraints, and yet they’re so quaint! I honestly wish Pixar would pay tribute to this short in some way but oh well🧍💔. Pardon my bizarre rant, lovely video‼️👍
Hi, I’m the guy that likes the Mater shorts. It’s mostly nostalgia but I watched them recently, and really? It’s just mindless fun. It’s silly and fun and you don’t really have to think about it - Mater’s just making shit up as he goes along. “And you were there too!” Is the bane of Lightning’s existence.
wake up babe new max video dropped !! anyways I’m grateful you made rules to guide this video, i don’t think watching 100+ disney shorts would be enjoyable for ANYBODY. great video as always big man! :)
i LOVE boundin’ there’s just something so funny about how it exists, like why is it doing that? i remember it being the first one i saw that made me really think “now wtf is this?”
Okay I know you said this was only for PIXAR shorts, but......the only short that makes me cry more than Bao is Far From the Tree. Oh. My. Word. Far From the Tree made me bawl like a little baby, just for me to then bawl even harder watching its companion film, Encanto. ❤
Me waiting the whole video for him to rate Feast (That one dog short about food) Finishing the video and googling it to find out it was a Disney animated short
I liked and still like Boundin, not gonna lie, it was one of my favorite shorts when I was a kid. But recently I watched it in original (I'm Polish, so the version I used to watch was obviously with Polish dubbing), and honestly, I kinda hate it? In Polish all the lines are spoken very clearly, the characters are voiced by different people, there are fun rhymes, and the theme is something like "if you hit rock bottom, don't give up and keep going even if you're doing a different thing". In English... well, for starters, I couldn't understand a word because of the way the voice actor slurred all the words. And I'm almost fluent in English 😭😭
I'm confused, during the mention of the short For The Birds he says that it played before Monsters, Inc. 2. At first I thought that he was talking about Monsters University but that movie cam out in 2013 not the 2000's. Was that a joke that I just don't get or is he referring to a different sequel?
My friend the rat supremacy ratatouille is my favourite Pixar movie and my brother and I would watch this nonstop as lifted honestly kinda scared me as a kid and now we can quote it verbatim it means a lot to us glad you feel the same. I honestly feel this shirt influenced my love of watching video essays it’s so good!
Tin Toy. The stuff nightmares are made from. However it is interesting to examine the trajectory of Pixar after that, as they would gradually make better shorts and grew to realize that human beings don’t look like mashed potato demons.

Okay like, I get why Boundin' it's not for everyone, but it was my favorite as a child because I loved to jump and I thought the sheep kinda looked like me with the bigass nose and shit haha, I never really thought about it looking kinda wonky because yeah, it looks weird but I always thought it was charming... idk
I also found myself coming back to it constantly and resonating with the message, and sometimes even crying to it, so, yeah.
It was my favorite until Bao showed up to the party xD
“Partly Cloudy” is my favorite!! All I wanted was for it to be ranked above “Lava” which I actually cannot stand lol so I’m happy
7:52 nooooooo smash and grab is good!
Legitimately my favorite Disney princess is Merida
29:52 Elise Ecklund is a good ukulele player
I absolutely loved Purl when I was younger. The animation style was nice to me, stopmation and stuff. I didn’t understand the message when I was younger, but now I think the message is amazing now.
oh and also, I loved (and love) kitbull as well!
Watching this got me to watch “Caio Alberto” because I wanted to know what the ending you weren’t spoiling was.
Boy did I nearly cry watching that…
Lovely lovely ranking!rarely do I see Pixar shorts being thoroughly discussed.
The entire car franchise is so much better than he makes it out to be I thought the stories were extremely heartwarming
Smash and grab is my favourite thing to come out of Pixar
the toy story shorts were literally my childhood leave them alone😭but i get where ur coming from
wake up babe new max video dropped !!
anyways I’m grateful you made rules to guide this video, i don’t think watching 100+ disney shorts would be enjoyable for ANYBODY. great video as always big man! :)
When you said a band with 2 people and who play ukulele why was my first thought when Peter and quagmire become a band in one episode of family guy
i LOVE boundin’ there’s just something so funny about how it exists, like why is it doing that? i remember it being the first one i saw that made me really think “now wtf is this?”
I like the Maters Tall Tales but only because its better than watching a whole Cars movie with a kid lol
I remember watching some of these when I was little and this was very nostalgic
29:34 what were those first two things referring to
I love short films, gonna watch burrow now
how dare you diss tokyo mater that was my favorite short as a kid
Okay I know you said this was only for PIXAR shorts, but......the only short that makes me cry more than Bao is Far From the Tree. Oh. My. Word. Far From the Tree made me bawl like a little baby, just for me to then bawl even harder watching its companion film, Encanto. ❤
Me waiting the whole video for him to rate Feast (That one dog short about food)
Finishing the video and googling it to find out it was a Disney animated short
50:21. Monsters inc 2?
Such a great thing to come home from musty crusty school from thanks max ❤️
Kitbull shot a harpoon through my heart ARG!!!!
Love the POTC ride soundtrack in the background!
A great ranking!! I’m not sure if you’ve seen Far From the Tree (released with Turning Red), it’s one of my new favourites!
La Luna really is that good
How dare you make me remember the good dinosaur… I will continue my day by forgetting about it
Boundin used to scare me so much as a child omfg
i love anything you do with your content
i love the continuous cars slander
This was a Great Wall down memory lane!! I loved all of these as a kid x3
I had that DVD when I was little, I watched it constantly
13:53 this shit looks like a blue sky movie
There goes the next hour of my life
11:40 i dont trust like that
ur videos are so scrumptious i drink them like soup yummy
I thought that said “soap” not “soup” 😭😭
I think you forgot to link the student animated version of the incredibles short, none of the links in the description go to it
Fixed!
I personally really like knick Knack. The Bobby McFerrin soundtrack really adds to the charm
