You are way off the mark. The people who love Tacomas and 4Runners or just Toyota in general have never been shopping for “all the new feature and technologies”. They were buying for affordability and reliability. Both of which no longer line up with Toyota. Not to mention Toyota moved Tacoma production 100% to mexico. Paying pennies on the dollar to make them, but charging us 10K more…

    • @pault7977

Agreed. If you're buying for all the bells and whistles, Toyota previously wouldn't have been on the shortlist. I hope the 'higher-ups' are not following Jeep's approach. Trying to be a Range Rover competitor just does NOT align with the brand. Meet the market where it's at, or have your vehicles sitting on dealer lots gathering dust - your choice Toyota,

The wages aren’t that much different in Mexico. It’s required they pay the people similarly etc to the USA to allow for the USA manufacturing facilities to remain competitive. It’s also in the Union contracts for each position classification. It’s not Pennie’s on the dollar so much as a few % points less expensive and there’s reduced land/infrastructure costs. It’s worth it to build in Mexico, but not drastically different like in the past. The Free Trade agreements have significant impact, otherwise the manufacturers would entirely abandon Canadian & USA manufacturing facilities completely.

@showmemorefunthings9208 thanks for the clarification. I'm saying their core customer base.
I'm I'll also saying this with the understanding that the entire market has shifted. However since about 2019, I've noticed both of those manufacturers offering less features in base models, and driving really high (luxury territory) premium prices.
Toyota still has the reliability and resale value. But it doesn't hurt any less

@@bagel411 Thanks for clarifying! I would agree with your assessment in general. However, the number 1 problem I see is middle income jobs are being shipped overseas and the US workforce is becoming divided in salaries (haves and haves-not). Then you have to ask yourself as a manufacturer whether it's a sustainable model to produce vehicles for the have-nots. Manufacturers have decided it's not a sustainable model and that's why we are seeing the average new car price sell for nearly $50k. For Toyota's part, they are creating economies of scale by having the Tacoma, 4RUNNER, Land Cruiser, and GX share a lot of components, which helps reduce prices. Over time this will allow them to add features to lower end models but will never get us back to the old ways.

At least for Jeeps you can get reasonable deals now. The 4xe wranglers are expensive but you can get them at ~10% or more below MSRP. Granted we don't know what the situation with the 2025 model will be that is to be announced in the next few month. I hope we see a similar situation for the 4Runners in 1-2 years, when they are available in quantity and the initial buyers craze has subsided. A $60k fully loaded TRD off road would be 54k. This would be a bit more manageable. But even with a potential rebate, overall I think these prices do not reflect the value and use case of these cars anymore.

I will be frank, I make close to 150k living in the Midwest and I cannot mentally afford a 70k car. I think it’s insane to pay 900$ plus a month for a car payment and that doesn’t include gas, insurance, and maintenance, like brakes, new tires, oil changes etc. So almost 1300-1400k a month for a car is insane.

Found a 2020 F150 5.0 Lariat for $30k less than new, with under 13k miles. I paid maybe $2000 more for it than my Toyota 4Runner was new back in 2020. I got a decent deal, but yeah, can't see spending $900-$1100 monthly payment for something that sits in the driveway most of the time.

agreed. On Toyota's website, configuring a Toyota Tacoma SR Xtra Cab 4wd with the towing package and package with blind spot monitoring & parking assist (the options I would want), MSRP for that truck comes to $38,235, and that's before destination fees, taxes, and any dealer markups. Pretty expensive for a basic truck. Now, that one's not too much more expensive than a similarly equipped Nissan Frontier, but to get into a Tacoma SR5 Xtracab model with the larger turbo engine, you're looking at well over 40k, and that's still not an upper trim model. I've been looking at getting into a midsize truck this year and I'm heavily leaning towards the Nissan Frontier. The current model's been out long enough that there are some newly used ones on the market I've seen for 29-30k, a much better buy than the Tacoma right now, and the Frontier is a good truck. Wait a couple of years for the new Tacoma and see what they go for on the used car market.

Wages for average people have been flat for over 40 years while corporate profits and executive pay has increased dramatically. Corporations are not sharing the profits with their workers at the same rate they are compensating the executives. If worker pay had kept pace with corporate profits then people might be able to afford these vehicles. If corporations want to keep raising the prices on their products while generating record profits and not compensating their workforce to share in the success of the company, then no one will be able to afford the products they make. Henry Ford understood this dynamic so he paid his workers enough so they would be able to afford a Model T.

It's not that Ford understood the dynamic of workers that were able to afford the cars they built. Ford made cars cheap enough for everyone because he developed the working assembly line. The reduced the time it took to make a vehicle allowed them to have an overall lower cost. There were over 200 car makers in the US from 1900-1920. The ones who quickly learned how to manufacture faster, gained notoriety... like General Motors and Chrysler. Soon the others couldn't keep up. It's called competition, a part of capitalism, and what brings you lower prices in general. So if people stop demanding higher priced vehicles, then prices will fall. It really is that simple.

Inflation...housing up 50%, food up 30%, fuel up 50%, and all of Toyota's raw material costs are up, why would you expect cars to not go up?

If crappy manufacturers like GM and Ford are able to price gouge then a highly reliable manufacturer like toyota should triple there price

Land cruisers are commanding a 5 to $10k premium at dealerships.
RAV4 hybrids, with dealer markup are going for up to about $50,000. Somebody mentioned earlier, Lexus pricing. An RX hybrid is $80,000. 😂. It's greedflation at its finest. They are designed to be leased, they buy them back after 3 years retain resale and sell them again, and double dip the profit, with Toyota financing.

Yeah on the high side. The TRD Pro pricing is outrageous 16K more than a ZR2 Colorado

I’ll wait till they are 0% for 72 and 12k off msrp. Fill the lots. Eventually they will have to move inventory.

The loaded vehicles have much more profit thats why they are normally the onse on the lots. They make almost nothing in the base models.
They just use the base model price for advertising.

Toyota is trying to grab as much market share as possible with these similarly priced SUVs (Trailhunter, TRD Pro, mid-tier LC, and the GX Overtrail). I agree that it will come down to looks and what capabilities you want in your $65K-$70K SUV. You must test drive each one. I suspect the TRD Pro will be the bounciest vehicle despite having adjustable Fox shocks (some people may loathe the extra bounce, body roll, nosedive, etc. for onroad driving). The Trailhunter suspension will feel different but will excel at certain offroad conditions over the TRD Pro (and vice versa). Some buyers will prefer the all-weather confidence and safety of full-time 4WD and the refinement and nameplate of the LC over the 4Runner. And then some people simply prefer the Lexus name, luxury, and posh. For me, the mid-tier LC has the best combination of refinement, offroad capability, all-weather traction, and interior niceties. I also prefer something that can go to a Four Seasons and a Home Depot without looking out of place. I'm not driving a GX550 to Home Depot or a Trailhunter to a formal gala. 😉 The LC will be an all-around "7" in most categories, while the TRD Pro, Trailhunter, and GX may score a "9" for desert-running, rock-crawling, and luxury, respectively.

I wanted to buy the new 4Runner but for $75k out the door its just too much. Bought a 2021 v8 gx 460 instead...

I agree with Tommy for that little difference in price I’d just go GX Overtrail.

you make the BEST point... that you guys personally can't even buy these vehicles. I think that is very telling.
