I'm installing that very same rudder kit on my Old Town top water 120 tomorrow. Already have my holes marked and template traced. I'm taking my time with hatch hole. One shot deal. 😳😓. I'll be bringing this video along with my instructions to the garage. Lol. Great information information on the installation. I'm glad you did this. 👍👍.
The Florida Bass Paddler any chance I can get a view of how the rudder directional wires work? Are you pulling on bare wire? Not clear in the instructions.
Bill, I have been following your install. I am to the point of installing the bungee that recenters the pedals. The instructions are unclear and I can't see the bungee in or the way its installed. Any suggestion on clarity for the bungee install for the pedals? Thanks for the video ! Had old towns pictures been a little larger I might not be stuck!
I am so sorry, but I no longer own this kayak. I can't for the life of me remember how I installed the bungee. Again, I know it is to keep the rail system centered, I just can't remember how I installed them.
Pretty sure this will work for the Sportsman series as well. Not sure why they didn't build in the tubes in the factory since it has provisions for mounting a rudder
The official rudder is almost $300 in Canada so I was thinking of getting a Chinese one and modding it. Some clear plastic 1/4" plumbing tubing should work for the tubes.
Wish you could have shown how you cut the Hole in the kayak as well as the rear tube and the rutter guides and running your cables and installing the rudder. Anytime you are putting holes in your kayak it is nerve racking.
Nice! Is it possible to just install the rudder without the lines to lower & raise and just manually lower before you go out? Not a fan of lines running on the outside of kayak.
I guess you could do that but if you hit, let’s say a stump and it knocks the rudder up, you’ll have no way of lowering it unless you get out of the kayak.
I am having issues with figuring out the deployment cable. The directions suck, and sadly you skipped over the setup of it. I have the cables to the point where it says don’t run them through the last guide. After that the directions basically make zero sense and the pictures the provide based off the directions are impossible.
@@Snags70 OK, so if you find me on Instagram, follow me; this way I can send you a picture I found on my Facebook page. Basically, the bungee runs through the last guide and is connected to the rudder lines via two fisherman's knots. The picture will show better detail.
That is the Ocean Kayak Hatch that comes with the rudder kit, or you can buy it separately. It is a 6" hatch. Here is a link to it: oceankayak.johnsonoutdoors.com/accessories/oce-deck/6-cam-lock-hatch
Hi Bill loved the video. I've got the 120 also and I'm debating the rudder upgrade. I understand all the install except for the foot pedals. Do the rails slide fore and aft to provide movement for the control wires. I know the pedals are stationary once they're locked. Thanks for the install video. Nice job.
Brad, thank you for the kind words. Regarding your question, during the install you will remove the existing rails as well as the pedals and will install slide rails. You will then slide the rails and pedals into the newly installed slides, and then the entire rail will slide fore and aft. The foot pedals them selves will still remain stationary to your liking. If you look at 9:59 of the video, you can see the previous rail installed into the slide. I hope this helps.
@@bradthornton2494 Thanks again for your kind words and best of luck with the install. The rudder makes such a difference, it makes the kayak that much better!
This looks like an absolute bitch. My old town doesn't track for shit. As soon as you stop paddling it just does a fucking 360. Which basically forces you to buy the rudder system, which is stupid af. They should've just had the rudder system already installed with the kayak and you pay a little more for the kayak.... instead of forcing they're customers to install this shit because its basically useless without it. And you cant even buy a drop skeg, which is literally all I need for the tracking. I'm selling mine

Thank you so much for the kind words, good luck with the install!
Thanks so much for showing us . I just purchased a new motor New port vessel nk180 electric brushless 1.8 hp. I am definitely going this route.
Thank you for the kind words!
Excellent video!
Thank you for the kind words! 🙏🏻
Thanks for the video. Installing mine next week and your comments and advice are much appreciated.
Thank You Steve...If you have any questions during the install, please ask. I will be more than happy to help!

Thank you for informative instruction video, i will pick up my 120 from my local dealer tomorrow.

It should as it is the same hull design.

Great video. Big help for sure. Question-, why can the rudder raid and lower line be run inside the kayak as well? Like the Feel Free system.
Wish you could have shown how you cut the Hole in the kayak as well as the rear tube and the rutter guides and running your cables and installing the rudder. Anytime you are putting holes in your kayak it is nerve racking.
Sticks29 Yes it is. I actually posted a video of an installation of a rear hatch in my PDL...that shows in detail how I cut the hole in the tank well.

So are you at the point where you need to make the fishermans knot?
@@flbasspaddlerthe directions are very unclear of where to and how to run the bungie to tie the knot, but yeah that’s exactly where I am stumped

Got the same boat and boreal color! Installing motor on mine!
Really confused with the fisherman knot Instruction. Not so much making the knot but understanding how to feed the line through twice
Are you referring to the instructions sent or what I referenced in the video?
The Florida Bass Paddler I got it! Took me a while to understand it but I got it. Ready to test it!!!
How big is that hatch on the back?

Well sir you sold me on the rudder kit. Ordered from Old Town and got a Labor Day sale price. Thanks for the video and for your coaching.

It took some work but wasn’t that hard to install. I have experience installing rudders on previous kayaks which also helped.
