Calvin, isn't it crazy that these guys made Nightfire, arguably one of the best Bond games, and they also made 007 Legends, arguably one of the worst Bond games? Just blows my mind
It's all down to the video game publishers really. I guess EA back then went all out and gave Eurocom a big budget and free rein to what they wanted for Nightfire. In comparison, Activision gave them as little time and budget as possible to rush them to finish Legends in a specific time frame.
Michael Barton I still don't think 007 Legends is that bad. It looked better than GoldenEye Rogue Agent and that has mediocre reviews back then. Then again Goldfinger sounded more like the actual guy in Rogue Agent than He Did in 007 Legends.
Have you thought about playing and reviewing Goldfinger 64? It's a full mod for Goldeneye 64 that turns the game into Goldfinger, with a full campaign based on the movie and new characters, weapons, multiplayer levels, etc. It's really well done, moreso than most ROM hacks.
In fairness, quite a lot more could have been wiped out. Your bank account, that one 99.9% completed game-save file which took you hours of grinding to do....
Calvin, the scenes with Xenia holding onto Bond's leg and then his boot reminds me of Necros in The Living Daylights. It would have been cool if there could have been a way of having her plead for her life the way Necros did as Bond cut the laces to slip his boot off. Well the two scenarios are most different so an enormous helicopter for a counterweight did not really leave time for pleading. At least the closest we get to the equivalent is Xenia's cries of "No" several times in despair realizing her helplessness. I suppose though there could have been a desperate "Help me" when she first grabs onto Bond.
I think it would be out of character for Xenia to ask for help. It's why I like how her death in the film as it's quite sudden [she only just has time to react before she is crushed on the tree].

This game was a letdown for me when I originally played it. I was expecting a more direct remake to the N64 version. Kinda like what Nintendo did with the GameCube remake of Metal Gear Solid. You made a lot of solid points and it's made me want to go back and revisit it. Great video and I'm so glad you're back!
Great review Calvin, good to see you back. I hope there is a developer secretly working on a new bond game as we speak. Gaps between movies were much easier when we had some quality games to tide us over. :)
Thought this game was alright. Stealth was pretty fun, but the game felt waaay too much like call of duty. It's definitely a lot better than 007 "Legends" though
I remember getting this for the Wii upon its original release with the special golden Wii Controller. Never gave it much of a chance before selling it. Will pick this up now on PS3 thanks to your review. I should maybe give Legends another chance too if I can get it for the right price.
I think the only issue I had with the game at the time (I had the wii version) was that it felt like Call Of Duty with a James Bond skin slapped on. I enjoyed the hell out of the multiplayer modes of the game both local and online (golden gun/paintball all the way!)
14:42 hey, it's still stealth if nobody's left alive to remember they saw you! And, take it from a bloodthirsty monster-beast, rampagey stealth is the best kind of stealth.
If it wasn't for this game, I wouldn't be watching this channel right now. This was my entry into the whole Bond series - I hadn't even seen a Bond film before I bought this, but there was so much hype for it when it came out (especially in Official Nintendo Magazine back when it was still a Wii & DS exclusive) that I decided to try it out. That was November 2010. 8 or so years later, I have all the films, all the Fleming books (plus a few continuations), most of the games, a few comics and a handful of soundtrack albums sitting on my shelf. So, thanks game! It really did change my life I guess. Also it came with a snazzy gold Wii Classic Controller Pro. That was pretty cool too. Not that the Wii Pointer Controls were bad, they were OK if I recall. Just that I had played a lot of 'Metroid Prime 3' beforehand which had excellent pointer controls, so I found it hard to adjust and ended up using the Classic Controller most of the time. I myself preferred playing stealthily - I find it fun pretending to be a secret agent and enjoy the challenge of trying to retain cover. Also I suck at firefights so I always tried to avoid them.
There are two small advantages the Wii version has over Reloaded: -Many concrete & wooden barricades are destructible. -You can use motion controls to aim more precisely, especially peeking out the side of barricades which is impossible in Reloaded.

That’s quite a fun and interesting fact! Thanks for sharing that. I always found their conversation funny. Now it makes me interested in seeing that 1969 film.
I’ve just come late to the party and played through this game for the first time, having been an avid fan of the original and still have original cart with all unlocked levels and cheat I might add 😌 Precisely my thoughts with the streets and “Train” level… “is this entire place under construction? What gives with all of the scaffolding and quarries”
Pretty sure the two bickering guards near the end are a reference to the 1969 film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. In that film the main characters argue about what they’re going to do in the future, and the Kid even tells Butch “keep thinking Butch, that’s what you’re good at”.
I always wondered how Alec could survive like 1000 bullets at the end, and then somehow, one bullet defeats him. It's just a bit stupid to be honest lol
Except it's not "just a bit stupid," because that one bullet only knocked him off the edge. It was falling into an explosion that killed him. This is blatant scene manipulation. So much for being "honest."
6:40 I thought Rare owned that level layout, considering the fact that the exact same layout is used in the multiplayer mode of Perfect Dark. And don't quote me on this, but I believe it might also be in Perfect Dark Zero. Either way, now that I know it was also used in Quantum of Solace, either this level layout is in the public domain, or it's owned by both Rare and Activision.
Goldeneye Reloaded was the second Bond game that I owned (first was QoS on the PS2) so I do have a soft spot for it. However, while it was fun for the first few times, I can't ignore how it unnecessarily takes cues from the Call of Duty games, from the gameplay to no real mission variety and the so-so multiplayer (co-op was cool tho). Modernising Goldeneye really took away the fun away from the story and characters, to gameplay mechanics like the lack of gadgets to use. Still it's a hell of a lot better than..... 007 Legends.
It just doesn’t feel right looking at this game and characters like Trevelyan, Natalya and Onatopp not being portrayed by the actors from the original film.
Apparently they had issues with one of the companies to get the rights again to recreate the levels exactly. They settled on the dam level and just went from there. Considering the hurdles I think they did a great job overall
Yeah I’m sure you’ve heard by now but with daniel Craig also being used seems to have stemmed from their access to the original likeness. There was a shot for shot remaster that got canceled for all the above reasons and this was made as a response to that
5 years late to the party here, but better late than never. My main issue is, if you brought back Sean Connery to do From Russia With Love, why not also bring back Pierce Brosnan and Sean Bean for Goldeneye: Reloaded?
This has a special place in my heart. When I was 10-11ish I got this on release day on the wii with the special controller. Sure, while xbox and PlayStation people saw this as an average game, it allowed me to play a decent multiplayer shooter on the wii.
That stuttering when trying to say bankers keeps getting me 😄 Also, it’s nice to see someone else talk about this game (which I basically grew up with)
I loved the pants out of goldeneye reloaded. I'm a big bond fan since I was a kid, but having only a nintendo wii at the time, it was pretty incredible a James bond game came out for the wii that was actually really good! Thanks for the vid!
They actually really wanted to do that, they hated how overly action paced the 007 games were and wanted a more sleathly game. They couldn't because of cost and now they gone.
The one redeeming feature of this game is the fact you can play as Charles Gray Blofeld in multiplayer. I don’t know why you can, but I thank the devs for letting me play as my personal favourite Blofeld and it should be mandatory that he’s playable in all future 007 games.
Great review, Calvin! I got the Wii version for Christmas the year it came out and have played through the campaign several times on almost all of the difficulty levels. Amazing game, even though the splitscreen was a bit limited compared to the online multiplayer mode (except from the abundance of different classic Bond characters you could play as). I'm considering buying Reloaded or playing the Wii version again in the near future.
Hey calvin, you need to play quantum of solace on the PS2. It is a completely different game to the others and in my opinion one of the best bond games I've ever played. The games stupidly underrated and is a hidden gem
@@jamesfrovarp4624 the PS2 version was developed by Eurocom and there return to focusing on licensed property's contracted to them from publishers and not trying to get publishers onboard for fresh projects. I haven’t played that one yet, but I get the feeling the reason it’s so underrated is because of many people’s hatred for the movie it’s based off of considering the film is one of the worst Bond films. The movie was so boring that I fell asleep during it. It was also very forgettable. I am still interested in buying the game based off of it though.
I have just completed the WII version of this -great game!! I agree with previous comments that's it one of the best ever WII games. ( The Tank level sucked though)
This game had some development trouble. Originally this WAS supposed to be a one to one remake but rights issues stopped that from happening. So to skirt around holding rights they agreed on a remake but it couldn’t adhere to the film completely. So this game is all a fancy way of recreating Goldeneye whole simultaneously trying to avoid getting sued apparently.
ABOUT FUCKING TIME!!!! I always wanted to see you review this awesome remake! I only had the Wii version. It's fun to play with motion controls but I would have liked the HD and extra multiplayer content.
I legit never thought that was a bathroom in the nightclub...thought it was another part of the bar or something (fancier than any bathroom I've ever seen...anywhere)
Thinking of your comment about Craig not being a very good voice actor. I think part of the problem was it just felt like he was reading another Bond actor’s lines, which he was, these lines were written for Pierce. Especially that line “No, for me.” Just the way Pierce delivered it, all the emotions, here with Craig, nothing. Monotone and reading from a script.
I had this for the Wii and didn't really care for it. This version looks much better and I'm encouraged to give the PS3 version a shot thanks to your review. Keep up the great work!
31:26 - "Daniel Craig just isn't a very good voice actor, is he." I'm going to say it. Daniel Craig just isn't a very good actor in general. Sorry, I know everyone and their granny seems to think he's somehow amazing, but he's stiff, awkward and wooden and seems to have got worse and worse with every Bond film. He doesn't look like James Bond, he seems constantly like he's trying desperately hard to appear and act like James Bond yet just comes across as someone's dad pretending. He's also a complete 1-trick pony. I never bought into any of his romance stuff even in Casino Royale, and his movies are just perpetually miserable and dreary with his constant narky sulking that is literally all he can ever do. The rare moments he tries to be jovial and relaxed, he fails miserably and even seems just plain weird and creepy. He isn't even tall, dark OR handsome either. I was singing his praises when he was first announced as Bond and for a short time after seeing Royale, but that honeymoon period wore off very quickly for me and I genuinely think he's the worst Bond actor, not including Lazenby who barely counts as an actor - and frankly, even Lazenby wasn't much worse and at least tried to be more 3 dimensional. Craig is possibly the most overrated actor of recent times.
I miss those days very much! The maps were very solid, IMO better than many CoD maps and the colors and weapon renderings are just emblazoned in my memory
Wishful thinking here but it would’ve been an inspired choice if they had gotten Eric Serra of the original film and Grant Kirkhope of the original game to collaborate, maybe recreate the best of both soundtracks. Add a more cinematic sound to the old N64 jams and maybe even throw in the Goldeneye Overture for good measure.
I'm definitely excited to see your full take on 007 Legends. Honestly I really loved the Goldeneye remake (I bought it day of release with the snazzy gold controller), so i was super excited when I heard they were doing the same thing with classic Bond. However, even though the two games look almost identical and clearly use the same engine and are made by the same team, Legends is a massive drop in quality and I'd love to get your thoughts on exactly why that is.
Hurray the return! 4 things to say 1. If I remember correctly reloaded goes out of its way to break stealth compared to the Wii 2. The nightclub on Wii didn’t use full models for all dancers but flat sprites that had more energy then the pretty dreary reloaded clubbers standing about 3. Why the bloody hell is Bond not wearing a hat in the Snow? Seriously a jacket and pants but they paid top bill for Daniel Craig’s likeness they need to use it ha ha 4. Bond does have a gadget: his Smart Phone it can hack, scan, and most importantly take calls! Glad to see an upload from you Mr. Dyson looking forward to 007 Legends 👌
I actually really like this remake i mean its not as free form as the OG goldeneye but i think its a fitting call of duty style retelling and i enjoy it
I've heard that the reason they used Daniel Craig for this game is because they didn't have the rights to Pierce Brosnan's likeness. Regardless, I do find the idea of re-imagining Goldeneye as a Craig-era bond film to be absolutely fascinating.
Honestly, I loved the multiplayer for this. It was no cult classic like Goldeneye 64 but a modern goldeneye game that I wish survived long enough to make it to Xbox One.
2:44 I actually love how it’s a new experience I mean yeah I wish we could get a beat by beat remake but when I think of reloaded I think of the story being retold in a more modern time
Finished this game for the frist time yesterday :) Memorial Park in St Petersburg was fucking hard. As well as Cradle. I enjoyed the game very much all in all.
The licensing to get the game resold online on an emulation platform or remastered is a licensing nightmare. There was going to be an awesome remaster of the N64 game on XBLA developed by Rare Ltd, and it even included the ability to switch old and new graphics at 1080p 60fps. All this was revealed in released footage on the online tubes. Similar to Perfect Dark XBLA. Licensing is a major killer.
I've been waiting for this review!!! So glad you reviewed it!!! I love this game and i enjoy it! It has it's highs and lows but its a solid game!! I love the weapon diversity and level design! Btw Sky Briggs was such a under used character, he was so cool! Anyway, thx for the vid calvin!!!

In hindsight, this game is a pretty good shooters game to play on the hardest difficulty, in comparison to all the CoD as of late
I have just completed the WII version of this -great game!! I agree with previous comments that's it one of the best ever WII games. ( The Tank level sucked though)
I’ve been waiting so long for this Calvin! Really looking forward to it
Hope it was worth the wait :D
Calvin - Bond Reviewer It was! Nice to see you’re uploading regularly!
It's strange that Boris is not featured in the story mode, but is a playable character in multiplayer.
31:26 - "Daniel Craig just isn't a very good voice actor, is he."
I'm going to say it.
I played this game around 2012 back when the wifi was still on and I gotta say some of the best multiplayer action I've ever experienced
I'd be interested in a review of the original Goldeneye.
Deadmau5 is pronounced "dead mouse"
This game was my first fps. I'm not that young, I just got a little late into the genre. I really loved it.
I wish the multiplayer was still active. I loved playing with the Moonraker gun.
The reason the controller vibrates when talking to Briggs is because he's patting you on the back.
I totally did not know that. To be honest, I forgot the controller vibrated during that part.
My problem with reloaded is there no subtitle
subtitles*
Honestly, I loved the multiplayer for this. It was no cult classic like Goldeneye 64 but a modern goldeneye game that I wish survived long enough to make it to Xbox One.
This is canon for me in the Craig series
That security guard, what a helpful chap.
I think all of us want a remake of Goldeneye.
I have got that game and I’m on the last level
When will you review the N64 Goldeneye?
I fucking missed u calvin
I've been waiting for this review!!! So glad you reviewed it!!! I love this game and i enjoy it! It has it's highs and lows but its a solid game!! I love the weapon diversity and level design! Btw Sky Briggs was such a under used character, he was so cool! Anyway, thx for the vid calvin!!!
your face at 5:41 LOLOL i spit my drink out i was laughing so hard
I hope we get a new Bond game soon. No other FPS games I know of have Golden Gun Mode. I love that mode.
