HA! I'm so glad you enjoyed that line! Glad to hear you enjoyed the game a lot as a kid! Good point about it competing with Perfect Dark too... I hadn't considered that but you're spot on
I think one of the other things that held back the success of World is Not Enough on N64 was the fact that the true follow-up to Goldeneye from Rare came out that same year. Perfect Dark was released earlier that same year in 2000, so if you were looking for the true successor to it in terms of gameplay systems, design, & controls, Perfect Dark was likely you're better option. Also worth noting that Timesplitters came out that same year on PS2 by Free Radical, which consisted of ex-Rare devs who were part of the Goldeneye team, so yeah, no shortage of Goldeneye-like games to play in the year 2000.
My tutor from when I was at college worked on this game as a buy tester. he said that he pestered the director to put him in the game. I think it was the submarine captain, because as it was a photograph of his face put onto a 3D model, they had to do something about his long hair, so a cap got rid of it.
You gotta unlock all the characters and levels! You haven't lived until you've had a shootout on top of a flying airplane with a guy wearing just a bath towel lol.
Man I loved this one just as much as I did Goldeneye as a kid. I remember renting it from Blockbuster the first time. And getting it for Christmas later that year. Happy memories.
Great video! Fun fact about the bank heist level at the beginning: If you have a gun drawn, security will shoot you when you get downstairs. If you don't, they'll just watch you walk out.
So happy this game is being given its due credit. It’s for sure one of the best Bond games for level design alone. There’s great variety to the gameplay, and the mission objectives are largely memorable. Also, the multiplayer was ballin’. I’d actually put it just behind Nightfire and just ahead of Goldeneye.
Thanks for reviewing this Calvin. This was my favorite Bond game growing up besides Agent Under Fire and Nightfire. This review really means a lot to me man I have been waiting for this since I first discovered your channel last March or April. Words can’t describe how much I appreciate this during these hard times! You made me laugh more than a view times! I kept rewinding it hoping it would never end! I would live to see you do a full play through of this man! This game is really a hidden gem there’s something very special about it the missions and level designs are better to me than goldeneye by far. TWINE is actually my favorite Bond movie. I always loved the Christmas Jones and Electra chemistry between them and Bond it kind of reminds me what I always wanted from a girl something about it just is so cool. It’s hard to explain but something about this movie and game just really holds a special place in my heart. Some interesting research I found scouring the internet the last couple years before I bought an N64 and did a recent play though I actually found out that there is a scrapped mission called subterranea that was removed from the game that was supposed to be between fallen angel and a sinking feeling pretty cool you can actually hack it into the game and see it’s similar to the caverns map on Goldeneye. Also there is a playable version of the thanes castle area that you can glitch into. Very cool. Also a test level called crate yard. And another cool bit of info is that a prototype version leaked a few years ago that is pretty much the same but still cool to check out. I believe there is some different guns and a couple more unseen levels to discover. Sorry for the long comment I just love this game so much. Love you bro can’t wait for more great videos from you in the future. Cheers Calvin.
I picked up TWINE N64 late last year and had a blast playing it. Can see several ideas that were fleshed out better in AUF and Nightfire. Definitely overshadowed by its big brother Goldeneye, but is in the same tier as it. The multiplayer is just as fun, plus the addition of bots makes it more versatile.
I just started watching the video but I wanted to say beforehand that I've really been looking forward to this review! I love the N64 version of this game and was super excited when you said you were going to review it!
I remember watching my brother boot up the game for the first time, select the Courier level and immediate fail the mission by punching the receptionist. We were so used to Goldeneye, where shoot absolutely everyone is usually standard procedure. Just one of the many ways the gameplay of TWINE 64 is more advanced and nuanced compared to Goldeneye.
It’s more like they actually just programmed more NPCs to be friendly fire or civilians that trigger a mission fail. It probably wasn’t that big of a change to do. In goldeneye there were still mission fail triggers with some civilian or friendly fire deaths, this game just enabled it even more.
@@KetwunsGamingPad Yeah I suppose I was exaggerating a bit. Goldeneye still had non-combatant NPC’s, guess my memory was a bit fuzzy. Still, yeah they are more advance in TWiNE, where some still try to kill you or even fight on your side.
I was waiting for this one. I really got into this game last year. Like the movie, I find the game seriously underrated. I see why some people prefer this over Goldeneye since it's a much more polished game with more dynamic missions. Tho it does come at the cost of more annoying missions. I failed so many missions because hostages kept getting in crossfire.
Completely agree with you, Alex! Particularly on your point about the movie being underrated. I also failed in my playthrough a few times thanks to hostages getting in the way. There are SO MANY of them in this game!
Honestly, I loved this game especially on the N64, tbh maybe even more than Golden Eye. Golden Eye is also great but I just liked the play through of this one more. This game makes me feel like I'm the lead character in an action movie.
Fun fact, you can change the gun's settings from a silenced pistol to an unsilenced, or the Sentinel Rockets from guide to auto, and the KA-57 for a auto to semi and so on.
This game holds a special place in my heart for being a replacement birthday gift when my mom couldn't find Ogre Battle 64 despite looking all over town. In the end I might have never played this game, and never have played the multiplayer so much with my friends if not for that. My mom did end up finding OB64 a few towns over about a month later. :)
This is my favorite Bond game! Not only a great game but also one of the best video game adaptations of a film in my opinion. It follows the plot pretty well and fleshes out the action scenes from the movie.
"An off-duty Fat Controller", the Sheriff J.W. Pepper tourist, the two Calvin's squabbling over multiplayer, thank you for the many laughs Calvin. Also I had no idea Skyrail was in this game, granted I've only played a few of the mission levels on an emulator but I find that really interesting that they brought back an original level in Nightfire and not just locations from the films. Speaking of Nightfire, in the PC version you can have "goodies" battle each other in multiplayer, although the AI isn't great but you can still have fun with it lol.
I prefer this game to Goldeneye personally. The atmosphere and the gameplay are refined to a point Goldeneye simply could not do for the time it was released. Eurocom really knocked this one out of the park. They also made my personal favorite Bond game ever, Nightfire. I always wished the spinoff Bond games like Nightfire, Everything or Nothing or Agent Under Fire had gotten live action movies made for them. But that is a Bond fan dream really. Great video, brings me back to my childhood. I still pop this game in til this day on my N64 and enjoy its astounding gameplay.
Excellent video Calvin! I love TWINE, I know Goldeneye revolutionised first person shooters but I always played this one more. Some awesome, laugh out loud gags too - not a ski level!, the Moore pop figure, and JW Pepper’s outrage at the multiplayer got massive laughs! Thank you :-)
Did you know you can completely skip the first level… just go into the room where deposit box is but raise the alarm first then pick up the deposit box then just walk out then you’re done 😊
TWiNE, Goldeneye, and Nightfire are the 007 shooter holy trinity IMO. Spend some time with any of the 3 either alone or with a couple friends and you are guaranteed a good time
It has literally been years since I’ve heard someone else feel the same way about TWINE for the N64 as myself. It’s not GE 64 but it’s definitely still a favorite of mine after 20+ years
I loved this game, I remember use to coming back from school and playing it for hours. I use to always regularly replay the first mission to and loved the jump out the window. This, Tomorrow Never Dies & 007 Racing were games I use to play so much. Great video thank you :)
Calvin raving about the good and evil multiplayer skins is what we all did and still do playing matches. Playing as M with a 12 gauge shotgun is not only classic but led to my sisters labeling her it’s Judi Bitch.
Loved this game back in the day. Totally agree with you about putting it up there with Nightfire and Everything or Nothing. Sticky grenades on the Bank level were a blast in multiplayer.
For some reason a lot of the R and Q dialogue is only ever heard on the easiest difficulty, worth going through it just to hear some of the dialogue there, mostly explaining the grappling hook, the bomb in the subway, and a few other locations. In Midnight Departure you can get into the truck that Davidov uses to get the airfield and it'll drive you there if you get in it instead of him. The opening cutscene in Turncoat has a second Bond spawn in for a second before the camera cuts to that second Bond where he then points to the board, this is not shown in this video though.
My mom knew a guy who worked at a place called Game Force. He said if I wanted any games to let him know. I had told him I wanted James Bond on N64 and he gave me this instead. I took it over to my neighbor's house and we had so much fun playing multiplayer with bots, that we opted to play this instead of Goldeneye (which they received later). When we found out that stuff could be unlocked through the single player campaign, we started playing that together to unlock more multiplayer content. I really liked the watch feature and all the little gadgets that were introduced. Personally, I always enjoyed this game and Perfect Dark over Goldeneye. Your video reminded me that I really should revisit this one.
TWINE N64 was and still is my favorite version of the game for me. The pace of the game is so much better and despite a few changes, it is the closest game to the movie in my opinion. I love the MI6 attack mission and I also enjoy the Subway a lot, but the action in both City of Walkways missions is absurd. PS1's TWINE is a classic mainly because of the casino mission but the N64 version gets a bigger highlight for being a little bit more original. Attacking MI-6? Threatening the subways? Skiing throughout the Alps with dozens of doods trying to kill you? Better voice acting? Dude, that's just amazing. Also the multiplayer is quite enjoyable as you can play it alone. It's impossible to hate this game, it brings me so many good memories. It's the closest game from Goldeneye on the same console. I can say that it is the Nightfire of the Nintendo 64. Also, just promoting myself a bit... a playthrough of both PS1 and N64 TWINE, and many other Bond games are featured on my channel as well.
I dunno, but looking at the footage makes me think that it seems like Mr. Dyson here didn't realize how to zoom with the sniper rifle. (Also, customizable controls are a thing with some presets if I recall.) Dunno if this is better than the PS1 counterpart while having played both but I only own the PS1 version legit and have only emulated the N64 one along them 2 prototypes that are out and almost nobody talks about as well, especially the later dated one, which was made available first.
If I remember rightly most guns had two modes of firing, machine guns could be auto or single shot. Ppk with silencer or without and the shotgun could go full auto. That rocket launcher you shoot the helicopter with in the walkways levels can fire all four rockets.
I'm probably a minority for saying this, but I think my sister and I had more fun playing the TWINE multiplayer than the Goldeneye multiplayer - primarily because you could play with bots and they gave you two planes refueling in midair as a map!
Fun Fact: Near the end of the Fallen Angel Level, if you shoot Elektra in the wrong place, thus only injuring her, she immediately kills M and keeps shooting at you. If you still don't kill her, a cutscene plays where you see the sub go underwater.
One of my utter fave bond games without shadow of a doubt! And overall, one of the most technically impressive games on the system! I mean, along with Conkers Bad fur day and the port of Resident evil 2, it actually has voice acting throughout! Let's not forget this is a cartridge with storage of 64MB or less.
Elektra's "torture chair" is actually a mechanical garrote which was an execution device that was used throughout spain and its empire from the 1760's until 1958 when it was replaced with shooting in spain, although it was still used in the philippines until it was replaced with the electric chair in 1969.
Great work as always Calvin! Getting mowed down by M with an AK is unforgettable! Like Nightfire, this game has a special place for me. These games did a great job giving people a look into Bond with gameplay variability. Especially loved the music in this game too. Hoping one of these days the franchise could potentially get some new management that can churn out new games. 007 is such an untapped franchise... guess that’s what makes it so unique tho!
I remember having a lot of difficulty with the awkward controls in the final level, but then somebody told me that you can change the control scheme to look up and down without having to manually aim all the time. It makes it so much easier.
I didn't know your channel, and I'm so glad to find it and see a Bond fan bringing up this game. As a kid I didn't have an expansion pak so I had to speedrun it if I wanted to finish it... and that's exactly what I did each time! I loved it, a lot more than Goldeneye even. Now I love both game for different reasons, TWINE is way more dynamic and cinematographic, while Goldeneye is a lot more hardcore and demanding in the gamplay department... but TWINE had friggin bots and I spent hundreds of hours fooling around with the multiplayer with friends (or alone trying to find different ways to troll the IA into doing silly stuff.) To this day I really hate how underrated and overlooked this game is, being one of the very best on the whole console catalog right up there with Goldeneye.
I feel like there must have been a difference in popularity of the N64 vs PS1 between North America and Europe, similar to the Mega Drive or micro-PCs like Atari ST being most popular in Europe. My experience was the inverse of yours. This was the version of TWINE that I and most other kids had, and I didn't know that there was a PlayStation version until much later. Most people where I grew up in Canada went from the N64 to the Cube and picked up a PS2 as their first Sony console.
Playing Golden Gun mode in multiplayer was always fun imo, too bad that you need to beat the game on 00 difficulty to get it. But the mode itself is arguably among the most creative in any Bond game I feel, all players need to find 3 particular pieces of the Golden Gun (The grip, the magazine and the barrel) and once they have all 3, they need to use the Golden Gun to kill everyone else within a 3 minute window
Thanks so much for this review! This past year, I have went out of my way to build up my retro N64 gaming library and I included The World Is Not Enough (TWINE) as well as Goldeneye 007, so I'm glad to be able to watch your review of both classic 007 games on the N64! I was thinking, would you be able to also do a review on Perfect Dark? As great as TWINE is, it was not only overshadowed by Goldeneye 007, but also by Perfect Dark being released in the same year. While TWINE is the 007 successor to Goldeneye on the N64, Perfect Dark is actually considered to be the spiritual successor to Goldeneye with Rare building upon the same engine. When given the opportunity to renew their 007 license, Rare declined it since they felt a bit tired after exhausting themselves in the world of 007 with Goldeneye and wanted to make their own unique first person spy sequel of sorts with Perfect Dark. Incidentally in Perfect Dark, the primary agent Joanna Dark is a British agent. I think it'd be great if you're able to do this especially with endlessly waiting for No Time To Die to be released. Even though Perfect Dark isn't technically a 007 game, it'd still be fitting to review it since again, it's a successor of sorts to Goldeneye 007. Keep up the good work!
This game was unfortunately overshadowed by the awesomeness of Goldeneye, but this one is great as well! I was blown away by the multiplayer mode. Capture the Flag and King of the Hill were tons of fun. It might be tough to find friends to play it nowadays, but fortunately you can turn on some bots to play with!
I had a lot of fun with this game. It’s a shame it’ll be forever stuck in GoldenEye’s shadow (I think it’ll always be “the other N64 Bond game”) but then I think that’s a problem for Bond games as a whole that GoldenEye was so big that many gamers consider it the only Bond game worth talking about. I struggle to think of another game series so defined by just one title. That being said, I can’t decide which I prefer more between GE and TWINE. Definitely TWINE benefits from the N64 Expansion Pak - which came free with Donkey Kong 64 so if players had bought that they would’ve been fine. Also TWINE benefits from coming out at a time when bigger N64 cart sizes were available so Eurocom were capable of more than what Rare could do in 97. TWINE does feel like it’s pushing the N64 further than GE, but then Rare were pushing it even further around the same time with Perfect Dark (which also sits in the shadow of GoldenEye sometimes). My biggest memory of playing the game was having to replay the Masquerade level cause I couldn’t figure out you had to jump up and ride the rails - I wasn’t expecting the game to replicate the film so closely. My only problem with this game was the N64 controller not having enough buttons. Pressing A cycles through your weapons, but to switch gadgets you have to hold A and press B, but then to switch between alternate weapon modes you have to hold B and press Z, and then to switch vision modes with the X-Ray specs you have to hold B and press A. Which is made all the more annoying that sometimes I’d go to hold A and press B to cycle gadgets, but it’d register as just pressing A and it’d cycle through the weapons instead. I know it’s a minor issue, but when you’re in the middle of a busy firefight it’s easy to forget which button combo does the thing you want, and you end up loosing a chunk of health cause an enemy starts firing at you while you’re faffing about with weapons. Most of the time I just did it through the pause menu, which really breaks the flow of the game. And yes, this wouldn’t be a problem if the N64 controller had more buttons (or had been designed better so the D-Pad could be reached), but I would’ve preferred if they had just put the gadgets in the weapons cycle rather than splitting them up.
Great write up as always, BenCol! I very much agree re the controls. I didn't go into it here as I felt like I didn't have much of a say given that I was playing it through an emulator. But yes, even when I was assigning the buttons to the PS4 controller I was using, some of it ended up feeling VERY clunky. I have a lot of nostalgia for the N64 controller but it's a pain to use on games like this where you want to strafe etc.
Really fantastic video! I spent hundreds of hours playing the multiplayer with my sister when we were kids and came to expect the dreaded save game corruption every few months, then needing to reformat and complete the game again to unlock all the characters and levels. Which emulator do you use to play this on pc?
0:40 - It's not JUST the fact that we were moving on to the following gen. TWINE's competitor was, believe it or not, Bond's former developer Rare. As Perfect Dark, their M rated, spiritual successor to Goldeneye, was also out that year. And poor Eurocom, who otherwise had a solid Bond game, had to compete against that.
I’m completely the same! I love it when Bond games do that and don’t only give you x gadget for only the two missions where you need it. Takes a little figuring out when exactly to use the grapple, laser etc
Great review. Surprised you didn’t mention that the game for whatever reason couldn’t use the James Bond theme (which is no where to be found in the game)but could use part of the David Arnold score as its main theme
I rented TWINE so many times growing up and we returned it so late each time, my mom eventually had to buy the Blockbuster copy. My cartridge still has the sticker across the spine!
This game has been in a blind spot for me as well. I do remember playing it somehow but it you asked me how many Bond games there were for the N64 yesterday I would have said "1". Looks amazing emulated as well. Great review as always mate!
I love this game! I remember seeing a single screenshot of this in Nintendo Power back in the day and being like "They're making another Bond game!! YES!" When it came out me and my cousin played the heck out of it. Pound for pound I've always considered it on pretty much the same level as Goldeneye. Late N64 games really are a whole different world than the early games--developers really started pushing the hardware to the max, and as someone who never had a Playstation it was mind blowing to see them pull off fully voiced cutscenes. We also loved all the new multiplayer modes and the fact that the game had bots so it made multiplayer matches way more interesting!
Man this brings back so many long buried memories of my childhood. I remember this game was a blast, but the last level was a dissapointment where you just kill Renard with a button push.
If you kill Moneypenny at the start of King’s Ransom you’ll fail the mission but can continue playing. However, a security guard will alert you that M has been taken hostage in place of Moneypenny. I always thought it was amusing the developers accounted for that.
Wait what do you mean? Monneypenny isn't taking hostage by default, at least to my memory
@@Seethi_C Sorry, I should have worded that better. I meant after you activate the first security system Moneypenny will radio radio Bond to alert him that M has been taken hostage. M in the movie: Looks sad when she sees that Bond killed Electra.
M in the N64 game: Calmly adjusts her hair like it's an ordinary day at the office.

Judi Dench’s facial model there looks absolutely terrifying like she’s in the Vic and Bob Masterchef sketch.
Goldeneye has a lot of cheap plastic melting in the sun style faces too lol

Very much reminds me of donkey Kong 😂.

Damn Calvin this guy took the time to write all of that and you didn’t even reply? Kind of rude
The expansion back turns on Hi Color mode which improves textures. It was definitely worth it
emulator emulates et
I picked up TWINE N64 late last year and had a blast playing it. Can see several ideas that were fleshed out better in AUF and Nightfire. Definitely overshadowed by its big brother Goldeneye, but is in the same tier as it. The multiplayer is just as fun, plus the addition of bots makes it more versatile.
4:51 I love how he drops-dead instantly.
I still have my blue N64 cartirdge. Good times!
TWINE is far more punishing than Goldeneye.
Goldeneye is the more important game, but TWINE is the better game.
I never realised Calvin was sitting down in these videos...
Great video Calvin, they just keep getting better and better especially the production value
Glad you like them! Feel like I've really found my groove these last 6 months or so :D Really appreciate the kind words!
Yes most guns have an Alternate fire mode
I remember the shotgun. It had an auto I think and it was hilarious. Great game really.
Fun fact ~ On one of the multiplayer maps, hidden volcano I believe... The bots have a blind spot where you can hide and they cannot find you
The problem with TWINE (if you had a N64 at least) is it is like eating a greasy kebab after enjoying the lobster bisque of Goldeneye 007.
Really glad you enjoyed it! Definitely had a lot of fun with this one in particular!
29.33 “This is so cool, look at his little mole!” Hilarious :-D
32:46 I can’t stop laughing at this part 🤣 😂😂😂😂😂
TWiNE, Goldeneye, and Nightfire are the 007 shooter holy trinity IMO.
Spend some time with any of the 3 either alone or with a couple friends and you are guaranteed a good time
This game is excellent. I never played the PS1 version, but I have very fond memories of blasting through those opening levels on my N64.
The pure nostalgia of this vid.
It's quite fitting that a Bond game requires 2 gadgets (rumble pak & expansion pak)
It has literally been years since I’ve heard someone else feel the same way about TWINE for the N64 as myself. It’s not GE 64 but it’s definitely still a favorite of mine after 20+ years
22:22 "His Lapel pin?!!!" hahaha very accurate to the movie
Glad to see you play this version. I think its pretty underrated to be honest. Fun fact the ntsc version of the game the cartridge is blue.
Agreed very much on the underrated point! Didn't know that about the cartridge... *Heads to google
Ridiculously underrated game!
I always felt that Die Another Day took a page from this game's "King's Ransom" mission when Q introduces the simulator glasses.
I loved this game, I remember use to coming back from school and playing it for hours. I use to always regularly replay the first mission to and loved the jump out the window. This, Tomorrow Never Dies & 007 Racing were games I use to play so much. Great video thank you :)
"An off duty fat controller" ahahaha that gave me a good laugh
Calvin raving about the good and evil multiplayer skins is what we all did and still do playing matches. Playing as M with a 12 gauge shotgun is not only classic but led to my sisters labeling her it’s Judi Bitch.
@Stephen McNiff thank you!! A livestream would be a lot of fun indeed.
I think Cleese had more lines in the Agent difficulty.
Loved this game back in the day. Totally agree with you about putting it up there with Nightfire and Everything or Nothing.
Sticky grenades on the Bank level were a blast in multiplayer.
How did you get this running without choppy audio? I can get the controls and resolution a-ok but the audio is all over the place :(
I like how the mission at Mi6 is essentially the into mashed with the VR training scene. Great use of source material
Yes! This is how I want to start my Sunday morning.
Elektra: “You wouldn’t kill me... you’d miss me”
Bond: “I never miss”
(Also, customizable controls are a thing with some presets if I recall.)
Dunno if this is better than the PS1 counterpart while having played both but I only own the PS1 version legit and have only emulated the N64 one along them 2 prototypes that are out and almost nobody talks about as well, especially the later dated one, which was made available first.
If I remember rightly most guns had two modes of firing, machine guns could be auto or single shot. Ppk with silencer or without and the shotgun could go full auto. That rocket launcher you shoot the helicopter with in the walkways levels can fire all four rockets.
I'm so grateful that the N64 version was my first game and I was born 2002 Im an lucky bas....
I'm probably a minority for saying this, but I think my sister and I had more fun playing the TWINE multiplayer than the Goldeneye multiplayer - primarily because you could play with bots and they gave you two planes refueling in midair as a map!
10:20 I know when I visit London, my first destination would be the docks.
38:27 more proof that sam mendes played this game
You forgot to mention that if you stand behind an enemy holding your gun behind their back they will surrender. That's where the mechanic came from.
Fun Fact: Near the end of the Fallen Angel Level, if you shoot Elektra in the wrong place, thus only injuring her, she immediately kills M and keeps shooting at you. If you still don't kill her, a cutscene plays where you see the sub go underwater.
I may have to go back and try this!
Do the vending machines in the tube station sell Thai Sausage?
Now I love both game for different reasons, TWINE is way more dynamic and cinematographic, while Goldeneye is a lot more hardcore and demanding in the gamplay department... but TWINE had friggin bots and I spent hundreds of hours fooling around with the multiplayer with friends (or alone trying to find different ways to troll the IA into doing silly stuff.)
To this day I really hate how underrated and overlooked this game is, being one of the very best on the whole console catalog right up there with Goldeneye.
I’m so glad you did a review on this amazing game! I grew up playing it as well as Goldeneye…this game is extremely underrated. You are a Legend sir!
I loved this game as a kid, used to play it all the time as a kid in 2001.
It's a shame that TWINE was overshadowed. It looks like it would've sold as well as Goldeneye and Nightfire if the game had better advertising.
Yup! I think it had multiple disadvantages against it, coming out pretty much at the end of a consoles life definitely didn’t help
My highlight was the gadget watch. You never know if or when it will be needed on any given mission, felt authentically Bond.
The music from the night watch level is a "childhood memory unlocked" for me. I probably spent a lot of time on it because I sucked at stealth levels
10:25 Roger Moore's voice coming out of 64bit Pierce Brosnan is jarring.
The versus part of this game was so much fun.
I really wish I’d had this as a kid to play with friends. I think it might have even taken over GoldenEye for us!
I'm glad you reviewed this game. I got the N64 version as a Christmas present way back when. I had an utter blast with it!
