    HOLY HECK, I was actually contacted by some researchers who study aphantasia (and apparently watch my stream), and they gave me a survey we can all take to help them gather more data about aphantasia! Check it out: www.psytoolkit.org/cgi-bin/psy2.5.2/survey?s=ctsPm
    I'm convinced my problems visualizing stuff is part of the reason why I'm so dang dumb about puzzles and trolls sometimes...

    Sometimes i can't sleep properly, because as soon as I close my eyes my brain just envisions the room in front of me as if i hadn't closed them in the first place. Imagine closing your eyes, but feeling like they are still open, you have the immediate urge to close them a second time.
    Twice twice IRL.

      That´s actually a Type of mild Hypnagogia and is extremely helpful when trying to learn how to lucid dream. I myself can sleep way easier after I realised it doesn´t actually matter if your eyes are open or closed when falling asleep, don´t ever try to forcefully close your eyes ,just relax your eyes and ignore the urge to try and find out if your eyes are closed or not(if you try to find that out you´re full awake again). If your interested in it I strongly suggest looking into Lucid dreaming techniques, especially the WILD Technique in your case

    The first time you asked everyone to visualize a star, I was easily able to just "Yep that's a star and it's red, got 5 points, pretty cool lookin' if I say so myself"... But as you continued talking about the logic of forming things in your head, I started doubting whether or not I was actually seeing a star or just visualizing a memory of a star I had seen in the past. I have always just assumed that our mind's eye is piecing together visual memories into something new (or at least how I do it), as in when you said star, I visualized red stars I've seen in the past, either on kindergarten whiteboard decorations, or mario stars, or whatever. I can't just visualize the shape of a star in and of itself by saying, "Imagine a red star." Kinda weird.

      There's a lot that's weird about the human mind. As a writer, and TTRPGer who tends to run games more than playing them I usually visualize how I think something is going to go down. A lot of the time I end up listening to conversations in my own head even though I can't actually hear them it sort of feels like they're there. "Being too loud to hear yourself think" really is a valid response to something if you're able to listen to convos that are only in your head. It gets pretty meta sometimes too where I become self aware of what I'm doing, and I "hear" my own voice say "you're listening to yourself in your head, you really have gone mad."

    Man, spot on with your personal description of aphantasia; I've never really pieced together that I can start doing it when I'm about to fall asleep! Picturing faces is next to impossible as well, even those I know very well such as my own mother. In those few cases where I can, it's always a brief line-drawing (like edge detection spits out) of a *photograph* of them, and not actually a particular memory or amalgamation of memories.
    The main thing I've noticed with my mental images is that while I can't, say, picture a square, but if I try and "rotate" it in 3D space like a cube, I can almost picture the 3D manipulation. I still can't see a cube, but I know which face is where. Probably because I've spent over a decade fiddling with 3D editing programs like Blender or CAD software.

    When you said that we should think of a red star, i imagined a red giant. So none of the 6 possibilities fit shapewise, but i think i can say 6 for the colour.
    Rotating, changing colour, making it bigger and smaller is very easy too. It may get less visible, down to 3/4 when rotating more complex things, down to 4/5 when changing colors, but when concentrating again, it will become very bright again. The reason you are so much better at visualizations right before you fall asleep is because you are starting to go into a dream state. Many lucid dreamers use this point as a stepping stone into a full lucid dream (myself included). I won't be the best to give concise details on this, I'm better at the practical applications than explaining it, but you can certainly find resources online.

      Weeeeeeell one thing that helps is trying to imagine yourself doing things. Like walking, getting out of bed, swimming(don't recommend that one cause sometimes it throws you in an ocean instead of a pool), driving, etc...
      Usually it helps suck you into the dream state with a bit of control

  • @Kingsly9802
    @Kingsly9802 5 років тому +5

    For the Aphasia stuff, when I picture things in my head it's kinda like holograms from sci-fi movies, there's an orientable shape that I can manipulate and parse in multiple dimensions, which I can also project into my actual vision and place in reality, but it's ... fuzzy? I guess is the best way to put it. Weirdly, I think there's some connection between being able to do this and a lack of oxygen. When I project stuff into reality it gets harder to breath and whenever I have an asthma attack my vision tends to color shift everything blue.
    The real problem that comes with it, though, is that I don't always have control of things I envision. In goofier cases, like lucid dreaming, characters tend to get crazy long giraffe necks where their heads spiral off into space. IRL stuff tends to be pretty unpleasant hallucinations.

    What if you wake up, and suddenly all of the colours you see are different (and you know they are different, that means you remember how things looked for you before that change)? You don't see blue anymore, you see yellow; red becomes brown; green becomes orange; such random switching.
    How would you feel? And what if i tell you that there is a person for whom this is normal? Someone who sees exactly like this, but their whole life?

    • @RyanDMoore
      @RyanDMoore 5 років тому

      I don't think one would know if the colors switched because to them, brown would look like what they had previously perceived as red, so it would be red still conceptually. Thus the inner sensation of "perceiving red" would be imperceptible to one's perception because one's brown is now one's red, ad infinitum. It would only be noticeable if one had knowledge that it had changed; anyone trying to say that your perception of red is brown and theirs is red would be having a different experience of external reality than you. I hope this makes sense. I can try to elaborate if that doesn't make sense.

    I was one of the ones who imagined a fleshed out solar system with a red star. Planets and everything. Other stars in the background too. For imagining how far you can get out of your room. I can do my full morning routine, driving to work, other cars on the road, shape of the key I use to unlock the door, etc. And can alter the environment at will (swap cars for all semis or Ferraris for example). I know for that level of detail it's probably uncommon. I've always been really good at visualizing objects and transforming / moving them in my head. And altering the colors of walls/doors/objects I'm actively looking at. Always an interesting topic. Thanks for bringing it up!

    Holy crap Carl. Genuinely curious, did you ever take Organic Chem in college? They make you rotate molecules around in 3D space, bend a straight chain compound into a ring and stuff like that. Also, I find it endlessly fascinating and amusing that because you're usually the person who has answers to people's questions, especially when it comes to biology, when you do find something that's outside of your scope of reality, you think they're trolling you.
    I'm only average when it comes to visualization, and it's the only reason I was able to pass Organic Chem since you have to do that a shit ton of times throughout the course. But it's always been within my scope of experience that people just do things better than I do. Immensely better than I do. Like those grandmasters that can visualize a chessboard and play blindfolded and still win. That completely boggles my mind. Anyway, it was really interesting to hear your perspective on this.

After this we went around doing tests like this with lots of people from the university and surprisingly most artists sucked at visualing stuff in their heads, while most game designers (the people working on creating game mechanics, balancing etc) were waaaay better at it. Our theory was that being really good at imagining stuff can actually stop people from becoming an artist, because it can be incredibly unfullfilling if you just start out and lack the mechanical skill to reproduce what you saw in your head :)

    In waking life, I find I can very vividly conceptualize ideas, most effectively when I'm alone. But in higher pressure situations, such as trying to dictate the idea to somebody, or even just put the idea on a page, it all goes away. When I lay in bed, with pure solitude and minimal sensory distractions, the ideas come flooding back, and it's like a movie in my head.
