Those bells tell what time it is every 1/4 hour. If you live in the country in southern Germany there is no escaping them but on the other hand you do not need a timepiece. Where I winced was when you used a steel hammer and chisel to rotate the tank assembly. Consider yourself very lucky. Hitting steel against steel in the presence of gas fumes can lead to severe burns due to sparking. Having worked in a hospital burn unit I know how bad it can get. Either use a special Volvo tool for this or use a brass hammer and brass punch as they do not spark. Please be careful in the future and this goes to all of you who watch this. All you need is one little spark to drastically alter your life. Sure, most of the time this does not happen but it is that one time that really is life altering.
Yes, bronze tools are generally a necessity in hazardous areas of petrochemical industry (as indeed are diesel vehicles rather than petrol IC vehicles)
you seem like such a calm natured and patient man. I don't want to sound mean but it made me chuckle a bit the way the bells we're getting to you, can't say I blame you to be honest. I think I'd be wearing ear plugs at that point.🤪 The tank will leak from the top of the seam eventually
I think changing a fuel pump sender unit on an old volvo while some over zealous campanologists wouldn't shut the fuck up, is what sent Jack Nicholson over the edge in The Shining. Well done buddy, well done 🎖️
there is an on board check system , the leds and button under the bonnet are to read faults , there is a diagnostic check you can do , cant recall the seqeunce but i used it regualr on my volvo 245 jetronic injection system
Get yourself one of those flexible picker-uppers. It's like a bendy cable with two pairs of retractible claws in the end. Almost like an ant's mandibles, but if there were two ants hugging. They are a life saver if you drop little things down an engine. The advantage over a pick-up magnet is that it doesn't stick to everything on the way down, and obviously you can pick up non-magnetic things like o-rings and gaskets and electric wire and brass mesh things.
Love the video, this was one of the first jobs I tackled on my new to me 89 Saloon. I only replaced the pump not the whole sender unit, and yes it's a tight squeeze. The trick was to pull the arm with the float ball on across more when removing and fitting as it has a bit of give and spring to it. If those bells were boinging when I was doing the job, I think I would have paid a visit to the church with my stanley knife and cut the ropes! Good work Sir.
@ I can usually talk over them. The bells era of Involvod is next level annoying. I went as far as looking up why they ring them so often. It would drive me absolutely mental.

Did you have a proper fire extinguisher at hand, by the way? Also, when derusting fuel tanks, it a good idea to have some JB weld nearby, don't ask me how I know 😂
Thanks! Good point, I was worried it was going to be a little thin on top! I've got a small fire extinguisher in the trunk, had a classic car go up in flames whilst driving before, if I'd had a small fire extinguisher I could have saved it, lesson learnt 😂

You were not joking about the hardest job - I replaced the fuel gauge sender unit on my 940 some time ago - It was easier to get at because the in-boot trapdoor was larger and rectangular - manipulating the assembly back into the tank was only made possible for me by watching the several UA-cam videos on this subject.

That's a faffy job for sure - my friend and I battled for hours trying to sort the fuel pump in his V70 D5 tank and that was an arse even with bigger access panels so you have done really well. I bet you don't miss those bloody bells 😂
Ah the Brit Expat found out what a pain in the arse those in tank pre pump/sending units are. Did it twice on my last 240 and once on my current 240. I also upgraded the electric pump motor to a much larger one. IPD in Portland Oregon USA sells them. They also sell the tool for the slip ring that holds the sending unit in place. It's actually called a Bung nut and Bung nut tool believe it or not. Installing a larger fuel pump will help the brick go faster when you can get more fuel to the engine of course.
Didn't the Volvo 240 originally come with a 25 year paint warranty ? There's nothing quite like the Volvo smell. When my dad bought a new 240 estate p reg the smell inside was heavenly. Even my 1st 740 still had remnants of it.
l had an identical 240 ('88) as yours featured, but it got older and older (and older). lt rusted very badly (underneath which is the killer). lt just became more problematic to fix. Twenty years ago l got a 5- speed Volvo v70, and have driven it since. lt is so much more modern, and after driving it, the old 240s seem a distant memory. Keep on it with those old birds, now v. rare indeed. But even now, officially the Volvo v70s (from 2001 to 2007) parts are no longer on-demand and need to be ordered from a New Jersey warehouse if living in Canada.
Hahaha, I would go all norwegian black metal on that bell after a few months of that soundtrack while I'm there bleeding and swearing and my back screaming in pain with my arms stuck deep into some engine room with a bolt that WONT FUCKING TURN!!!! 😂😂😂
Nice work. That bell would make me crazy. The fueltank looks as good as new on the inside. I would take a look if the fuelregulator is in good order and a bottle of injector-cleaner to see if it helps
You might have explained the continues ringing bell, bur WHY does it ring so often? And how on earth can they who lives there still want it to ring? What was the first purpose of this annoying bell?
That's a pig of a job. In my 850 and V70 classic this is much easier. Things just fit through the hole. In my C70 you have to lean into the boot during the whole job. What a pain.
Those bells are an intrusion. What % of locals are church attenders, I wonder? Given the strict laws on making any car noise on Sunday, the bells are doubly ridiculous.

I've owned 5 RWD Volvos and I've done this 5 times LOL! My last one needed a new tank which made it easier. I always enjoy your videos!

After a while you learn the volvo twist to remove and reassemble the sender units

just replaced the sender unit on my 1984 240 wagon, its a non-injected model so it was a lot easier.
I couldn't cope with those bells, would do my head in! Why are they ringing so much?
