18 when he wrote on it, 19 when it was released... and he had an album and some demos before that even younger :D glad to see my fav death metal band showing Trivium and my metal roots some love!
AND he joined Trivium around 12/13 and they put out their first album Ember To Inferno when he was 17 which also has lots of crazy riffs on it.
It’s like Mario Duplantier of Gojira playing Terra Incognita drums at 16.

This quickly became 4 Levels of Metal. Can't say I'm surprised. They wanna do other bands with this but it isn't even 4 Levels of Death Metal anymore

@DP 91 I don't hate it, I just don't like that non death metal will be featured on a series called 4 Levels of DEATH Metal. That's why I said it turned into 4 Levels of Metal or it should be considered as such, as a general rule of thumb, but if it isn't, eh. I don't watch this channel much anymore so whatever. Plus, I like all sorts of non death metal. Scatman John, Primus, Slayer, Meshuggah, Animals as Leaders, and Tigran Hamasyan. I'm sorta widened in my horizons, to be fair

Yea, the album Ascendancy, which all these riffs are from, came out 16 years ago. And Matt just had twins in 2018 I believe! Time flies.

Matt just flexed so hard lol "oh you want 4 levels of Trivium? LOL how about four levels of songs I wrote when I was in High School?" All of these songs are from Ascendancy, aka an album that came out in 2005... Matt was 19. Level 1 is actually originally from Ember to Inferno, which is even older.
Pretty crazy...
So basically, what makes Matt's riffs hard, are the FUCKING. INSANE. Gallops and DP's at FUCKING. INSANE. Speeds.
I'm trying to learn Kiriste Gomen and the main riff is so fucking hard to play at full speed
I literally use Into The Mouth of Hell We March’s riff that pedals off the first fret and the main riff from Scylla and Charybdis to tighten up my rhythm playing whenever I fall into a period of crappy playing.

Suffocating Sight is one of my all-time favorite riffs and introduced me to Trivium.

Not a big fan of Trivium but cannot deny he's a fantastic guitar player and Heafy is a legend.

@@MurryFBM how is it generic if he did it before most everybody? He was doing that 20 years ago. Trust me I remember because I love metalcore and when embers to inferno came out there was hardly a scene at all for metal core for his style to ever be considered generic. You can't be generic when you're the four runner of a style.
That attitude toward trivium has mostly died out especially since they hit a winning streak with The Sin and the Sentence, What the Dead Men Say, and In the Court of the Dragon. Not to mention the neckbeard gatekeepers also love to hate Archsipre so it's unlikely they'd be here.
Not surprising that Metallica is one of Matt Heafy's biggest influences with all that down picking.

No fucking way!!! My favorite band!!! The first song was the first metal song I've ever learned on guitar, Rain solidified my picking hand whilst annoying my mom. Suffocating Sight I still struggle with, that pre chorus riff is sexy. Please do a song together, that would be godly

Pretty crazy when you realize these riffs are from their second album. I tried to learn suffocating sight in high school after one of the first big youtube guitar heroes, Killrbuckeye covered it. Was truly the golden age of metalcore, I spent my whole time trying to learn trivium, all that remains and killswitch engage riffs.

brought me back to high school playing these songs (and most of ascendancy) with my old band. Just riffing in the garage in the summer, no jobs, no worries, just jams. love and respect.
Seen Trivium live 2009 and all riffs front row center with the original line up and they where the main band so had clear sound balanced and tone . Great video .

Trivium is my favorite band, so this was an awesome and slightly unexpected collab! Heafy's riffs are no joke at all, him, Hetfield, and Schuldiner were my main inspirations to start writing music. Great video, this was very fun! Now ima go play some old Trivium! 🤘

This was such a big boost to my confidence to see Dean struggle for once and with something I can play. I can't nail it though don't get my wrong and suffocating site is the only song I've ever had to do the yngwie pick arm flail, if you do the yngiwe pick hand flail in the pre chorus it stretches your arm and rejuvenates it slightly so you can torture it again in the next verse
So glad he played a ton from Ascendancy. My favorite album of all time.
My band old band played suffocating sight at a show back in school, that third riff is crazy hard to play good every time. Wierdly the pre chorus feels alot easier to me. :)

Love Matt he was my guitar idol when I was a teenager and starting to learn guitar.
I came to love Trivium from a movie. In the movie Smoking Aces, the scene where the Tremor Brothers roll up on Ben Affleck and lay him down with machine guns, "Like light to the flies" is blasting from the dark interior of the old muscle car they are driving as the windows drop and they open fire. They've been in my archive ever since. Perfect scream with melody integration. I love it.
