Trivium steadily raised its metal flag through the old-fashioned method-relentless touring. The band took any and all opening slots, priming crowds for Metallica, Iron Maiden, Killswitch Engage, Machine Head, DragonForce, Korn, and Megadeth before graduating to headliner status. That constant grind was fueled by 10 full-length releases that incorporate varying tints and tinges of their three core musical tenets: metalcore, melodic death metal, and thrash. (The band derives their name from a Latin word that means “three-way intersection,” describing their combination of these aggressive subgenres.)
And while tone dictates many decisions made by a guitarist, touring comes with a cost and might be the one thing that could trump a player’s desired setup or sound. Now, with elevated gas prices, venues fleecing bands for merch cuts, and overall hiked inflation, many artists are having to compromise and condense their live arsenal. Thankfully, digital modelers like the Fractal Axe-Fx and Kemper Profiler have made that decision easier (or harder, depending where one sits on the digital-versus-analog debate). Trivium embraced the future in the early 2010s, when they shifted towards the Axe-Fx II and then pivoted to the Kemper Profiler.
“We were one of the first bands to use Axe-Fx and Kemper, and both those things rule,” says Matt Heafy. So, it’s rare to see a hard-charging, globetrotting force like Trivium-who were rocking Kempers during our 2014 Rig Rundown-return to their roots, blasting through furious 5150-style heads after nearly a decade on the digital dial.
“In 2019, when we were in the studio recording What the Dead Men Say, we didn’t have any amps and it was a bummer. We had to scramble to find somebody who had tube amps that we could use to track, so after we finished that album, I never wanted to be stuck in that situation again. I scoured Reverb and bought all my favorite amps and everything we used for all our past albums. Through that process, I really got back into messing with gear,” explains Corey Beaulieu.
Onstage, the return of the stacks enhanced their performance. “The modelers had a slight latency-I don’t think the crowd noticed the difference-and I felt that if we could shave off a little bit of that by bringing back the amps, reducing the response even closer to zero, we’d be better for it. We’ve just really loved returning to live tube heads.”
The afternoon ahead of Trivium’s headlining performance at Nashville’s Marathon Music Works on October 14, guitarists Beaulieu and Heafy joined PG’s Chris Kies to cover the pair’s smorgasbord of signature gear-they know what they like, and brands are eager to hit their high standards-and why they transitioned back to traditional tube-drenched tone.

And they’re both very knowledgable, but have their own unique personalities.. Corey is a more laid back, and maybe a bit timid/reserved, but there was a two way conversation that showed he’s a really chill, nice guy… with Matt, he plowed through his part of the rundown, and you can tell he is a bit more comfortable in front of the camera than Corey-his Twitch channel is probably the main reason why (on top of being a frontman, and having a more “commanding” personality)…his Twitch channel is really entertaining

@@kodychesire I had a discussion with a friend about why trivium isnt that big. We made a conclusion that if "selling your soul to the devil" thing is true, then Trivium for sure just didnt sold theirs yet because they checks a lot of boxes to be bigger than they are but yeah.... something is missing hahah
On more realistic side tho, they unfortunately were that band that was cool to hate during their early years and I guess that stained them till today. Also its just how metal work... A 20 years old band is considered as a "young" band cuz we are so stuck in the past.

I was introduced to Trivium at my very first metal show in November 2005, when they toured with Amon Amarth and Children of Bodom. Saw them again with In Flames in 2007. Got all of their signatures on the ticket stub, still have it 15 years later. Huge inspiration for me when I was first starting out on guitar. @@DavidOakesMusic read my comment again, “my favorite”. I don’t give a fuck what you think of their Metallica and Tool albums, the newer albums didn’t have the life to the music that Ember and Ascendency had. Better production? Yeah. Bigger budget means better production. Better guitarists? Year. Practicing and touring and playing together for 20 years makes for better guitar players and a rotation of drummers. But the vocals weren’t pleasing to me, and the songs just sounded like the best album Metallica never made or the best album Tool never made. They became radio rock. I want the Hessian Headrolls from the “In the fire” track. Dusk dismantled? Ewe.

    Matt is a freaking LEGEND!
Has literally every guitar at his disposal and chooses to make something affordable for us plebs. As a South African, let me put it in our perspective. A Gibson Les Paul Custom is R90K give or take, That is 20 x the minimum wage in the country. That is 3 months salary for me, as a Developer who earns a decent living here.
Think about that. a $2000-$3500 guitar which is around a monthly salary for someone in the states that makes $30-40K a year is still a feasible option. But Matt. No! He wants it lower. If you see the Epiphone Prophecies now, I mean - phenomenal guitars and I give Matt credit for making the stand that you do not need a Gibson to sound incredible.
Thank you Matt for looking out for your fans. Seriously - you made both Gibson and Epiphone think a bit. Especially Epiphone. Their quality now is literally on par and often times exceeding Gibson, even their standards. It was you that made them take note. They are now their own brand, and do not stand in the shadow of Gibson.

21:06 - Why not push/push-knobs??... You can just stomp them both ways, with the only downside that you don't know what it's on by feel (but you can make a habit of switching only when necessary, so you just know what it's on). - But I know of those knobs because of an old Ibanez Roadstar I got, which has pickup-splitting push/push-knobs. But when I wanted to go and find more of them to put on other guitars, that was actually quite hard, cause they're kind of rare and I kept ending up on push/pulls. - So I feel like they're just not popular, but probably because they're so uncommon and people just don't know it's a thing.

I met Matt Cory and Paulo at a metal dinner they hosted 5 years ago. Matt and Corey were literally talking and chilling with me, my bro, and my best friend like we knew them for years. It was surreal because I’ve been a huge fan for 17 years and seen them live 15 times since 2006. Paulo was very to himself and didn’t say much. He was kind of off putting to be honest. Wasn’t super friendly or approachable but it wasn’t like he was a sick or anything. Just something I noticed. Cory and Matt kind of hung with us like me and my crew were the only people there. It was very cool

Ever tunes require nearly as big or bigger routes than FR , the part you see on top is just the actual bridge and saddles the part in the body looks like a piece of an old type writer or so it’s a hunk of metal.

    • @MStriewski
      @MStriewski Рік тому +1

The point is they don't go out of tune (it's user configurable how much "give" the unit has). To do that they route a trem shaped but larger cavity for the mechanical device that maintains whatever string tension you set. They're kind of amazing, mechanically, but yeah. Big hunk of wood to cut out.
I remember seeing a video when they were first released about setting one up and the presenter was adjusting the range of tension held so that he could bend without the unit fighting against it. Could be wrong, that was a long time ago.

@@MStriewski watched a rig rundown of Chad from New found glory and he had the evertune that just replaces your bridge. He had the wound strings locked so no matter how hard he would bend the evertune did some sort of compensation and kept the guitar in key. He kept the other strings unlocked so he could bend leads. There must be some added mojo to the one they have to chamber for. I'm seriously considering putting one in my custom.

I still never understood the latency Matt talks about with the Kemper. I have never felt that when using mine. Another thing is why not mic the cabs if you're using a real head? Using the TNT going DI is literally the same as using the Kemper that way. I'm also absolutely not bashing *trivium is like my 2nd favorite band. Even have a Kiichi fretwrap lol* but it's just odd to me. The Kemper is solid, tube amps have a lot of variables and I feel like it adds for unnecessary variables too the mix. Just my thoughts..

5:34 - Thank fkn god!... I got tired of the homogenization of every band just switching to modeling. - Yeye, I get it, they do sound great and it's extremely convenient. - But at the same time, for some reason, you can hear it. Not that it's bad, but like it falls flat. Even outside of Kempers, you can just hear (or probably rather feel) it's modeling. - I can't explain it, but everything just sounds kinda "flat" or "lifeless" whenever it's digitally processed. - Well, actually, I think the reason is often that they don't mic speakers anymore, so it might sound great on stage, when they still use cabinets and even wedges for the energy, but as a consumer at home, or even out on the field in front of the PA, you basically get the DI-sound without the sound of a speaker blowing at a microphone. And even though they model that as well, I don't think you can ever capture that actual physical energy and the sound of it.
But anyway, I've never understood why BIG acts, who drag massive stages along anyway, such as MetallicA and the like, had to switch to modeling with the argument that "it's easier and more reliable". - Really??... Who cares in that case??... That's why they have money and technicians. Get backups and let the technicians work for their money. - Angus Young has stubbornly always gotten the AC/DC-crew drag along his ridiculous and unreliable Marshall-heads, which I believe was even shown in a Rig Rundown. - That's Rock 'n' Roll and who cares if it breaks down??... Fix it and use it!
