Hey Dan! Thanks for taking the time to put Penny under the microscope... Or onto the 'light table'! I had a bunch of fun animating her and spent a lot of time studying footage of Olympic gymnasts, dancers and trampolinists to get the feel of her performative actions just right.
Shout out to Remi and Kieran who handled other characters like the Penguins, and the bosses too! They're bursting with so much personality.
It shows man, the energy of Penny's is so grounded that it makes her immensely believable. It feels like she moves *just right*, her movements are so respectful of the physics of her world, it's a joy to watch her move. Also, her expressions are just priceless.
yoooo awesome work dude!! you and the rest of the team did amazing on this
Oh fab! Thank you for the insight! Truly, Penny is an absolute joy to watch as she moves, and as you said, all the characters in the game are brimming with characterful animations, sterling work my friend!
my fav bit the is way Penny balances on the yoyo while it's zooming around on the ground, the way the weight shifts back to hold her centre of gravity, and then to the sides as she makes turns, like it just works so well at helping sell the sense of speed, like she's only barely in control, but really she only _looks_ like she's barely in control, like a proper performer exaggerates their movements to sell the idea but the reality is that they know what they're doing, just fantastic work
glad that you took a look at our game! been a big fan for a while so this is so cool!
Oh cool did you work on this??
oh wait you worked on this too???? thats awesome!
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy yup, did gameplay programming!
@@AurumVGI bet you guys all have Worked Hard on creating *Penny's Big Breakaway* Game right here! This game is Absolutely Incredible, Stunning, Marvelous, Elegant, Amazing and Fantabulous! Kudos! 😄😁👍👌
Amazing, thanks for commenting, I think a few of you have commented on the video, which is great, I'm glad it's getting some reach! You've done brilliant work here my friend.
The color palette of this game is just stunning!
It really is
Getting Penny's Big Breakaway as a gift for my birthday was the best birthday gift ever and I love everything about Penny's Big Breakaway from the gameplay and characters even the story would highly recommend this game a lot it's that great.
The most majestic jump gaming has ever seen!
I just noticed in this video that, even though it's not clear which way Penny's body is facing, her shadow is literally shaped like an arrow!
That is a great observation!
This game reminds me of spark the electric jester and yes that dude was also a sonic fan game developer that worked on before the sequel. Seems a lot of indie game developers have been influenced by sonic in some way shape or form
I didn't know about this game before, thanks for making this video, it looks incredible and I just bought it.
id love more videos like this covering indie titles.
"penny in a pinch" was composed by Sean Bialo!
Woops! Thank you
Amazing video! I’m also VERY excited for BLUD. Oh + I spotted a wild Berserk Boy! 💪 … which is out now 😏
Thanks for the kind words, and well done on the release of your brilliant game!!
goddd i love everything abt this game, all of what you mentioned is so just like good and fluid and well constructed and thought out and words LMAO, this is def my goty for this year rn lol, its so damn good dude
also i was literally listening to the credits theme from this as i got the notif and i literally screamed LOL
Check out old games from a developer called Treasure, like Dynomite Heady, for an appreciation for the color pallet and geometry of this game!
Bloody love that game!
And Sin & Punishment and Radiant Silvergun and Alien Soldier. Just a few of my absolute all-time faves 😂
@TomFry Oh my goodness, what a pleasure! I'll never forget stumbling onto the absolute gem that is Major Magnet. What a smart game designed for its platform. First time I heard Tee as well. Thank you guys for remembering the past but writing your own future.
It's crazy to me that this game didn't make a bigger splash. Literal 9/10 at worst. Just wish there was more content
It's surprising to me. Sonic Mania was such a moment I'm kinda surprised the cred from that didn't take Penny to more success.
1:13 I've actually seen that effect on the PS5 version too, maybe on the switch it's more noticable lol
Huh, well maybe it _is_ an intended effect!
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy It does that on PC too, so I'm gonna say it's definitely intended.
It’s an intended effect that is made to look painterly, though I guess the lower resolution on Switch makes it harder to tell
PC player reporting in. The background post-processing is there on the PC version. Evening Star did raise the possibility of adding a post-processing toggle (likely to decrease GPU strain) in a patch, however.
True, her jump looks amazing
That jump is truly majestic!
The townsfolk look like the bonanza bros. I don’t know if it’s a reference or not but I think it’s pretty funny
Oh yeah I think you're right. I wouldn't be surprised if that was an inspiration.
I was waiting for you to mention her jump animation. It’s the gayest little jump I’ve ever seen in any platformer and It’s a joy to watch. I never noticed how her back foot seems to stretch rather long on he way up.
I've been hoping this video would be made
I really hope you make a video about the animation in Pizza Tower, that game has a old cartoon style but made in pixel art, great video btw!
Yes, I totally want to do one!
also this is probably just personal preference but feel free to freeform whenever you want :) i like the rawness of freeform videos.
5:30 I'm fairly sure it's not just to maintain orientation and focus, but to literally keep from becoming extremely dizzy
Disorientation / dizziness
Such a great game
Currently on sale on the psn store too; good timing and just bought it 👏
You should look at the animations in Nickelodeon All Star Brawl 2. The characters have a lot of personality and there movesets are on point.
If I had a nickel for everytime a platformer mechanic I wanted to prototype/have prototyped already had a game out, I'd have >10 nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened > 10 times. Guess I'm never making a normal platformer.
Jokes aside, the game looks great. A big part of nailing good feeling character controls is the animation. Looking forward to the followup vid.
Just because something has been done before doesn't mean you can't do it too 🙂
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy Definitely. Different devs will interpret/utilize the same mechanic differently. Even for my last game, Control:Override, there was a game with the same core mechanic. But the actual games were very different because they focus on different things.
That said, it's quite funny that there have been two two games utilizing yoyos these past few weeks.
I really need to sit down and play this game.
Yes you do
This is Amazing! I would definitely love to know about the Brilliant Animation Works of *Penny's Big Breakaway* Game right here! I must know!
I really gotta get this game and go through it
Good video as always!
I was honestly surprised when i scrolled down to like and see the view count under 10k in 2 days. Its actually still super high quality! But i did look into all your videos that did and didnt do well and i think i found a theme. And since you read all your comments i might aswell give my 2 cents incase an outsiders perspective helps. Since i do personally love hearing constructive criticism myself because it does improve my work! Or feel free to completely ignore! xP
Scrolling down your vids, every thumbnail that attracted my attention was specifically the ones that did well. And i will admit, i watched this video because im interested in the topic and you always make excellent videos. I do have the bell ticked after all so i didn't need convincing. But the thumbnail feels busy and using too many similar colours, when zoomed out the necessaries dont pop out as much. Take Fluid Motion, Animation of Samus and The Animation of Mario Wander for example. Simple saturated backgrounds, high quality render and a bold title! You typically do stick to this formula but some feel more busy than others. Like the Megman Battle Network video follows this formula, but involves multiple characters, multiple colours behind the characters making it look more busy, plus the green hue isnt eye catching. The latest Kirby one is 100% eyecatching but doesnt entirely feel like it reflects the quality of the video since its legit just PNG of Kirby's face xD
From this video specifically: The title of the game feels like unnecessary detail since the character shows what game its from, the background has a lot of noise and the thick white outline does feel a tad messy. From the recommendations of this video i see "A Critique on Penny's Big Breakaway" and its very simple and eye catching, but lacking any title making it feel less effort. When there's not much detail, our eyes search for the details in something, seeing the depth in that. So super simple but with subtle depth and bold colours will attract attention but still be a work of art. Plus contrasts all the stuff all over the website's screen xD
Thumbnail is the first thing anyone sees, only reading the title and creator if their interest is already peaked. And there are millions of other videos on the platform. I do hear people talking about your videos, its usually by specifically game animators and people that are fans of the games you talk about (which is why the fighting game ones did so well, FGC watch every video under the sun on fighting games). It doesn't help that most of people that subscribe like content but never tick the bell, so only keep coming back through video recommendations, meaning it only takes a couple videos with bad engagement or lengthy time between content to entirely lose that engagement. Iunno, I'm not entirely sure if this is effecting your views or if the algorithm just hates ya for some reason, but I hope any of this helps. If you're confused at what I'm saying I'm happy to create examples! Keep up the excellent work, I really do want to see this channel succeed! :)
Man, i really just hyperfocused! Spent like 45 mins on this! xD
ADHD go brrrr
Totally agree, thanks for the feedback! I wasn't sure on the thumbnail, but you've convinced me to change it! Thanks
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy Woah that was fast! I was about to mention a TLDR version xD
I think for the Kirby video example, if you just grab the Mario Wanders thumbnail, replace Elephant Mario with Carby, move em to the right because the render is left facing, then turn the blue into a contrasting aqua-green. Video woulda been hard not to click on when in recommendations xP This character though, maybe something purple or blue? Contrasting the yellow without blending in with the highlights of their clothes. I actually like the colours used in the critique video i mentioned xP
Edit: Oops forgot the kirby one wasnt just the latest game, maybe Carby wouldnt be good, something like Smash's "haai" taunt might be good render.
Thats muuuuch more eye catching!
Good video
Babe babe video game animation study released a video ❤
The sound design is also goated. Easy goty.
The quality of the animation is great but there's an odd effect that makes it kind of hard to look at. Something like a low shutter angle that makes the motion look like a fast strobe
Not sure how nice a floppy follow-through is...
Ha..
1:13 uh... I play on PC and still see that painterly background effect (Skyward Sword was ALSO my first thought lol)
I was at 1080p though... Maybe it scales with resolution? Or it's in the settings?
E: oh my bad, a dozen people have already mentioned this hours ago
Analyze the Animation of Sonic Frontiers, it’ll leave you weeping haha.
Didn't he cover it already?
New Frame Plus has covered it
@@titanic_monarch796 It wasn’t that Good of an Analysis imo. Pretty much said, “Looks Pretty Good but has a few setbacks.” No one seems to acknowledge how bad it’s animation can really be so I guess I’ll have to do it myself.
Please do! I want to see more people talk about video game animation!
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy I’ll try, I’m not that knowledgeable on the technical stuff like you guys (Which is why I wanted you to analyze it) but I do know what looks good and what looks bad.
Are my headphones busted or is the audio heavily leaning left in this video?
Hopefully when Epic Mickey Rebrushed came, I personally hope you will talk about its animation.
I didn't play that one
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy Oh, you simply OUGHT to! Whilst, yes, the gameplay may not be that special to you, you simply GOT to play it for its story, art direction, music and animation.
Very nice looking game that I disagreed on a lot of the design decisions with. Nevertheless, very glad Evening Star games is making their own stuff now.
In one of the intro cutscenes, the audio is desynced with the animations.
I don't quite like the DOF like effect...
In the PS1 what you saw was a combination of very low res textures and very low vertex coordinate accuracy, that made 3D objects woobly amd inaccurate.
In this game you just see a frozen glass effect, they create some gausian noise and they displace the background based on it.
The animation of Street fighter 3rd strike plz plz plz plz plz

Can you do a break down of the beloved & broken Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines, by Troika Games.
Haven't heard of that one, I'll have to look into it
When is odin sphere video?
Ahh not for a while
Could you do the animation of PIZZA TOWER
One day
The name of the game...just say it out loud. Sounds like P..s Big Break-away
6:51
That looks like a Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island reference.

Great video! Just be careful with your recording setup/audio processing. Your voice stereo is a bit off-centre and tends to lean into the left speaker.
Thanks for the feedback
SuicSquad a good game???! Explain!
Did I say it was a good game?
@@VideoGameAnimationStudy Then what you was talking on the begining!?
I said the animation was good.
1:04 what? That's not a retro effect, it looks nothing like a pixellated PS1 game. If it is an artistic choice (like Skyward Sword) then I guess I can see it but it looks more like broken upscaling (which is fine if that's exactly what they're going for).
I did say "feel to this world" - not a 1-for-1 likeness.
all those good animations wasted on an ugly character design
What do you find ugly about it?
I don't get what's good about Suicide Squad's animations/style? I'm not talking about the gameplay, but to me it just looks like every other generic 3rd person big world game these days.
It's good in the sense that it captures the actor's performances really well. Just because it's generic doesn't necessarily mean it hasn't been well produced.
