A Lange & Sohne Watches: The Top Eight Watches From Germany's Best Watchmaker
Вставка
- Опубліковано 11 гру 2024
- A Lange & Sohne is Germany's finest volume watchmaker. Although only re-founded in 1990, the reborn Lange has established itself as a worthy rival to Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, Audemars Piguet, and even high horology independents like Greubel Forsey. Tonight's show highlights eight watches -- eight landmarks -- that tell the story of A Lange & Sohne from 1990 to 2021. Below, find a review of the A Lange & Sohne Odysseus sports watch, the most prominent Lange watch of the moment.
More than any other model, the A Lange & Sohne Odysseus Datomatic, reference 363.038, reflects the values of the German watchmaker in 2021. Although clearly inspired by the popularity of watches like the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711, the Lange Odysseus breaks new group in the luxury sports watch segment with a unique design and movement detailing that surpasses the Swiss. At 40.5mm in stainless steel and bound to a matching steel bracelet, the Lange Odysseus isn't revolutionary at first glance.
Watch collectors who spend time with the Odysseus are bound to fall for its charms. The intricately detailed dial in blue (steel case) or grey (white gold case) sports a level of attention to nuance that Audemars, Patek, and even Vacheron do not achieve. Part of this is a product of Lange's innate ambition to challenge Swiss watchmakers in every segment, but Lange's historic design tropes also play a role. The unique day-date display draws inspiration from the "panoramadatum" of the Lange 1 dress watch and the digital time display of the Zeitwerk jump hour.
A Lange & Sohne watchmakers spare no detail and gild their dial with plenty of white gold hardware; the calendar frames, hour indices, and hands are 18-karat white gold brightened with rhodium. Legibility is excellent, and luminous paint ensures nighttime visibility matches that of daytime.
Prior to the Odysseus, very few Lange watches were constructed of stainless steel. For the sake of durability, the standard Odysseus includes a stainless steel case and an integrated bracelet to match. If there is any common thread to the objections lodged against the Odysseus, it's the reaction to Lange's proportioning of the case lugs relative to the bracelet. Watch buyers who seek a better balance of case and band have the option of buying the white gold Odysseus on a rubber strap. Those who do choose the steel Odysseus will find that the bracelet and clasp are highly adjustable.
A Lange & Sohne movement finish is legendary, and it prevails on the company's first sports watch. Each Odysseus is powered by an automatic winding Datomatic caliber L155.1. Based on the rotor automatic caliber L086, the L155.1 has been toughened for sports watch use thanks to a full balance bridge and an elevated beat rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour. Hand-engraved bridges, black polish, Glashutte stripes, engine-turned perlage, and mirrored anglage live up to the legend of Lange's Glashutte-based watch workshops. For security against water intrusion, the A Lange & Sohne Odysseus is water resistant to 120 meters.
This episode also contains reviews of the following watch models: Lange 1 191.025 and 191.028; Datograph Flyback 403.035; Tourbograph Pour le Merite 702.025; Zeitwerk 140.029; Richard Lange Tourbillon Pour le Merite Handwerkskunst 761.050; Richard Lange Perpetual Calendar Terraluna 180.026; Saxonia Thin Copper Blue 205.086.

My lord what a great ALS history lesson by the best person in the business. Thank you Sir. I could have listened to today’s lesson for hrs. All the best and good health to all who will watch today’s show. Zeitworks is my all time favorite.

@@the1916companywatchreviews no way, I’m pretty confident in saying that there are plenty among us that would love to see a lot more of this 👍
Well done Tim great vid. Picked up first Lange this week. Lange 1 Time Zone. Love it
We definitely need more Lange only episodes ❤️
Lange is the reason why the Stern family wants to keep producing their Nautilus like AP with their RO to go a little mass market
This show is so so good. Tim I don’t know how you do it so consistently, but the watch community continues to benefit.
Cheers
Here here
Great presentation of an Awesome brand!! There’s nothing like a Lange!
Probably my favorite show ever. Lange is my favorite manufacturer. I love my Rolex but will eventually get into an 1815 chronograph one day.
The 1815 chrono might just be my favorite watch of all time by any brand at any price point ❤️
@@dnlmoretti finally got one 4 months ago from Watchbox! Rose gold with black dial.
@@JB-xt3ly congratulations 🎉 wear it in good health! 😊
Missed this live , just catching up with the archives . Tim, your encyclopedic knowledge never fails to astound
For a brand with such a concentrated history and bevy of halo pieces , I can’t believe how perfectly you encapsulated the brands narrative history . It felt both exhaustive and succinct at the same time . Reminds me of the good old days when your JLC collection could be a standalone history for the modern house
Great Lange retrospective Tim.
I still remember when I acquired my first Lange from Govberg many years ago.
I thought it would be just a one of acquision but it became a one of my horology passions :)
Cheers
"baroque execution"...that is a perfect description to their movements
Have a 403.032, got it as my grail watch... Love the show.
thank you, Tim
I always look forward to 10pm GMT on Monday’s, Tim is going to educate me!
The format of tonight’s show was really good. The Lange history was fascinating. A succinct lesson featuring some beautiful watches inter dispersed with the usual wrist shots that didn’t disappoint.
Well done WatchBox Team for bringing the viewers such a quality program. ✊
The blue jacket looks terrific along with your excellence as a watch educator for all of us, exceptional work once again, the Lange for watch commentary. I have a Saxonia Moonphase, black dial, one of the best.
Would’ve liked a mention of the 1815 Chronograph. It has the wondrous movement of the Datograph in a manageable size for most wrists. Case thickness is the main sticking point with a few of the otherwise incredible Lange watches. Please find a way to make the Zeitwerk a thinner watch and you’ll have a multi-year waiting list and aftermarket prices over $100K.
Thats definitely Not a Genta rip-off. I can agree with that all day. Whatever else you would say(good or bad), they made the 'steel sports watch' their way and you can see it clear as day. Watch enthusiast or anyone else.
Can't say anything bad about the Zeitwerk. It deserves every compliment and more.
Always learn stuffs from the Guru of horology! Always looking forward for ur show. Thanks Tim.
@@the1916companywatchreviews Got to know more about Lange from ur show. I'm worry by the time I saved up for my grail, their price will be sky high. Love their detail works on their timepieces. Also was told they will assemble & stripped down & re-assemble the 2nd time?
Lange 1, the frontrunner watch I am debating on getting as my retirement watch in five years.
I'll trade a kidney for a Zeitwerk and a Chronograph-tourbillon.
Great videos Tim
Great update in typical fashion! Thank you kindly to Tim and the team at WB💪🏼
Say Tim, you do know that GP offers the 1966 with a starred blue aventurine dial, very similar to AL&S’s, and they make a steel version of it for under $10K, right? It’s called the “Orion”. My only critique of it is its brash white dial printing which I think they could have done in cosmo blue and left off the word “AUTOMATIC” off. But beyond that, it’s absolutely beautiful!
Thanks Tim and crew. Love the show. Trying to be better on the timing. Best wishes!
Very interesting and informative stream. Learned a lot as always. Thank you, Tim. Thank you, Watchbox. Thank you to everyone in the chat.
ALS is a great brand no doubt about it. Germany should be proud of them. They really did come out of left field with extreme talent in movement manufacturer. But I would like to see more case variations and in general the "rest of the watch" ,
The very notion of a "complete Lange collection" verges on the absurd. Maybe if you're a Saudi prince, it's a hobby to consider. The Odysseus is my primary just-out-of-reach grail: it pushes ALL of my buttons.
As ever, thanks for the entertainment Tim and Team
@@the1916companywatchreviews You sure educate us!
i can never seem to catch this live!!!!! lolol love the show i watch all keep up the good work
Great show Tim, Lange rocking it. 🥃
Damn whichever handsome gent bought the Breitling Premier B09 Pistachio towards the end of the video must be a really cool guy 😉.
Nicely done Tom and Crew... Very informative Sir. AARP 😅 Keep it coming! 🥃🥃🥃
Süpep!!! A.Lange❤❤❤
Bought that OMEGA Seamaster Diver 300M Chronograph with Sedna Gold & Tantalum today from watchbox! Kudos to Alex for being an awesome rep and a wealth of info to offer. Folks, if you want to work with someone that's quite direct and honest when answering questions, give him a ring!
Thanks for trusting our Company and for sharing the good experience you had with Alex! We appreciate your support!
hey! Just found your channel and WOW you are a fountain of knowledge! Subbed and excited as i'm about to make purchase myself
Welcome!!
Another informative and action packed show. Thanks Tim!
I'd be interested in having you do a similar recap of Sinn. I just took delivery of a 556 I RS on an H-link and it hasn't left my wrist. I may have to ditch a few other pieces from my collection because the Sinn is that nice and it's commandeering my wrist.
The jackets are a good look on you Tim.
Lange is the King in my humble opinion
1815 chrono, white gold case, black dial is the Lange I would want to get (next to many other models).
Tim Mosso: "I liked the watch so much, I bought the company!"
@@the1916companywatchreviews From your naval career to your current on-going success, you are an inspiration in so very many ways, and a model for all. May the wish-fulfillment scenario I vocalized (from an old razor commercial) indeed come true one day!
Fascinating show Tim, congratulations ⌚️👍
To buy an Odysseus one must first spend $26K+ on another Lange, and then you'll be on a wait list.
Yep. They playing the game now.
I was just told 55k min spend for the blue oddyseus. 40k for the white gold
I wish these were just a tad later so I could participate. Still, another great video chat Tim!
mindblowing stuff 😍…….i ll take a zeitwerk please
@@the1916companywatchreviews 😊😘
Lange Mmm..😘😘😘
Abdul R is such a boss-- that might be my favorite wrist shot of his yet.
Das ist gut.
Makes my mustache stand at attention.
Nice show Tim 👌🏻
wow... Breitling SuperOcean and the bank vault!
I would take the Odisseus 10 times out of 10 over any of the steel sports from the Trinity.... Genta designs are overated AF
WOW very interesting super kool ,1st class great info.,, AAAAAAAAAAA++++++++++++ again great video I liked it a lot ,keep up the great work.
Lange doesn’t make watches they make cities
i had to check the date on the video, because of the glasses!! haha
