  • My Unorthodox Life star Julia Haart is ANGRY. She is now a fashion mogul and reality star. But she grew up in an ultra orthodox extreme Jewish sect that forced her to be 'modest', and had to learn how to start again with her new life in the outside world. She went on to be CEO of fashion company Elite Model Management (EMM), and create and star in her own Netflix series My Unorthodox Life. Since escaping from the Haredi community, she has worked with Kendall Jenner and Naomi Campbell among other top models.
    #unorthodox #hasidic #judaism
    Get her book Brazen: brazenbook.com/
You'll have seen Julia Haart making appearances on The Ellen Show to discuss her Full Circle moment, and the Tamron Hall Show to talk about the root of her divorce, not to mention Family Feud, where she appeared with her family. Her kids include: Shlomo, Miriam, Batsheva and Aron.
It's like the Netflix Hasidic Jews documentary series Unorthodox or famous ex-Hasidic Jews Shloime Zionce and Lev Tahor (from the Lev Tahor documentary). This is like a look inside the home of an orthodox jews family - hanging with the hasidics.

A true religion supports both genders. But when it favors one gender above another, then it becomes a weapon of power, subjugation, and unquestioned abuse. This is not limited to any one religion.
My family was RCC on both sides. They told me I didn't need to be educated because I would get married and "some man" will take care of you. I put myself through college on a work-study program while carrying 18 credit hours per semester, and holding a weekend job waitressing. When I graduated, neither parent showed up or had anything nice to say like "congratulations".
As long as I lived under my father's roof, boyfriends were discouraged, and any male friend who came to see me was driven off with overt anger and abuse by my father. I never married until I was 35, and had moved from NY to Hawaii to get away from them to do it. They always preferred their religious dogma to being happy. I once wrote in my diary, "In this house, the only emotion you are allowed to feel is depression." This is something I saw throughout my whole Irish Catholic community.
Religion, at some point, no matter how good the initial intent, always seems to eventually fall into the wrong demanding hands that insists on winners and losers. Thus far, women, in general, are the ones who end up with the lion's share of responsibilities, work, burdens, subjugation, and oppression. This class of people are expected to mold themselves around whatever the other gender is doing, and sacrifice themselves and their dreams for the sake of the happiness of others.
I think this is changing, and there are those females who are off the rails, but they're not representative of the whole nor do they tell the story of the many who have and do suffer in silence.

The community Julia grew up in was not extreme. Maybe her family was but not her community. She was not honest.
Most orthodox Jews do not grow up the way she describes. Judiasm is extremely pro women and pretty much all of the garbage Julia puts out about the laws of judiasm are either straight up nonsense or lacking context.

Exactly! I am a Christian woman who has never married. Finding a man who understands the difference would be pretty challenging all right. Unfortunately a Christian guy might forget the rest of it: This husband should love his wife as he loves himself: he nourishes and cherished her as Christ loves his church. That’s how it is supposed to be but doesn’t often happen.

What a great interview! It's so wonderful that you were really able to discuss so many things in depth. I have a lot of extended family who are pretty extreme Christians, and there were many similarities to Julia's story. My cousin sewed a dress for her math exam at 16, and she's now 32 with seven kids. She married at 19 and never really had a choice about it. She's now raising her daughters the same way. Happiness is not important or even considered selfish. You should be happy with serving God and your husband because they always have to have a headship as a woman. They don't associate with anyone outside of their extreme ideas of Christianity unless it's a superficial conversation to try and convert you, but the pity that Julia talked about in her group towards non-religious Jews, I knew exactly what she was talking about just in a very different context. The beliefs are different, but the tactics are the same. It's so important to show the problems of fundamentalist groups. There are many beautiful and fulfilling ways to be Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Atheist etc. But religions or ethical systems can also be implemented in really harmful ways too, and it's important to talk about it because the people inside don't even know what choices and ways of thinking that are being taken away from them.

I was raised Catholic; my mother, especially, wanted me to be silent and subservient. I was to be her constant assistant and relieve her of many duties so she could focus on my brothers and an extremely active social life with my father. Strangely enough, she also wanted me to be financially independent from the family, about age 10. She stressed doing for myself and living a life of work, in the home as well as out. Needless to say, there was tremendous conflict.

How on God's green 🌎 did she expect a child of 10 years old to be financially independent? That's absolutely insane and cruel and horrible. I honestly hope that you do not have contact with her because she clearly doesn't deserve to have you as her child. My mother and her siblings were raised in a strict Catholic household until my grandparents divorced, my grandma's idea, and there were 2 girls and 3 boys and my oldest Aunt parented her siblings more than my grandmother did unfortunately and my grandfather traveled for work and was in the national guard and wasn't home a lot and everyone struggled being raised by them. My father's side was raised Catholic as well and strict but his parents stayed married for 63 years until my grandfather passed in 2014 and my grandparents from that side were very different to say the least and they both raised their 3 children.

This is heartbreaking. One of my best friends went the other way. She was brilliant and talented. After a year of college she emigrated to Israel, to a commune, with her parents’ blessing. She actually planned that as a way to get over there to stay, but they would not have supported the trip had they known her plan. She met and quickly married a man who was 3 weeks from his 20th birthday. In his sect, he was required to marry by that age. The men hold weekly prayers in the ancient hills. I don’t know if she was happy or if that word even remained in her vocabulary, but she felt she was doing what was right.

Our school pushed for us to go to college and those of us that chose to not go to college for whatever reason were looked at funny 😅 I chose to date and married who I wanted, who I loved and felt that we have the same interests for our futures. Her story about the blessings lacks context. The meaning behind the blessing, which is taught in kindergarten when the blessings are introduced, are not about men being better. Women are held with extremely high regard in judiasm and are considered to be more naturally spiritual and connected to God. Both men and women are unique and special and deserve respect. There is no gender that is better in judiasm but any man who grows up in a healthy Orthodox Jewish home will be taught to give his wife absolute respect and love. Marriage is about working together and their is no one person who is more important. Judiasm actually shows unusual sensitivity and respect towards women for those (unlike Julia) who actually bother to listen to and learn about Judiasm.

Then you have you actuaries, lawyers, private entrepreneurs, PTs, OTs, just to give a typical description. The info shes providing is not convoluted truth but bald face drop your chin to your chest lies.....just a drop of research (i dont even mean RESEARCH, I just mean like 'asking around' and its obvious). I was expected to 'get a Jewish man' and breed her a great-grandchild. It meant nothing to her that - due to illness I was born with and lifesaving operations I had to go through - I was infertile and would never be able to breed AT ALL. No. That wasn't important. She actually said to me, 'If you get with a Jewish man, then you'll get pregnant.' She hated the fact that my parents encouraged my independence, sending me up to college in London, far away from home. I was going to be in contact with lots of gentiles and learning stuff..... She ruined being Jewish for me. All the patriarchal pressure came from HER. I grew to hate her, and even hate being Jewish. I've had to unpack so much misery from my past. But her info is made up of complete falsehood and lie.....shes a smooth operator and i have a gut feeling that most of her interviews and filming is done during 'manic' phase....seems to me she gives that possessed vibe so must be thats what drives her, combined with extreme self esteem problems growing up that cause her to project her inadequacies on others. Girls/women in Jewish schools are given potentially top notch educations (and esp the schools shes attending)......most families have multiple mid/high level professionals making up much of the family. I and most other Jewish women have NO idea of what she describes. Your jaw drops just listening to her make this stuff up. And when you compare to any public school system (okay maybe if you can afford 30k a year tuition you can get something better ....most people cant) CERTAINLY the education is multiple notches better (and we NEVER have to worry about crime, drugs, pregnancy, and weapons either.....enriches the learning environs if ya know what i mean).

People that i know that know her from years ago tell me that they sort of befriended her but also tried to keep ber at arms length bec she was unstable. Most of the world knows her TRUE story. Its only bec of the limelight she seeks shes able to manipulate people naive or ignorant enough to be sucked in.

I grew up in Monsey and went to an even more conservative school than Julia did. I would say that some of the things she mentioned are accurate (for example my school didn’t have a chemistry lab at all, women are most valued as wives and mothers), however it’s really important to distinguish between her religious life and her family life. It seems like unfortunately her home life was very dysfunctional. The fact that she’s unsure if her mother ever loved her, or that her mom said “who said you have to be happy?” etc. those are NOT Jewish values. As well as her claim that she never got to choose the clothing she wore, or who she married, or her wedding dress (stated on the TV series) have NOTHING to do with Judaism. Every orthodox woman and girl I know can choose their husband, clothing and bridal gown, so if that did happen, it must have been family rules rather than Jewish rules.
By her description it seems her mom was a very cold person, which of course would make for an unhappy life.
Coming from a similar background, I went to college, I have a great career in medicine (yes, even though my first chemistry lesson was at the college level) and I still maintain strong Jewish values. My family supports me in all of this and I’m not considered rebellious. I did, however choose a bit of a more modern orthodox lifestyle for myself because I want my kids to have better opportunities in education etc.
My point is, Julia experienced dysfunctional home life, and since her home life was a strict religious one, the 2 became conflated and she abandoned both. There are many ways to be happy as an orthodox Jewish woman, there are many different lifestyles and choices even within orthodox life. I do feel sorry for her that she did not experience the joy that one can experience in an observant Jewish lifestyle, which is precisely what attracts so many who were raised secular to become observant.

I went to Bais Yaakovs in Boro Park for both elementary and high school, and I got into college without any problem. I got 90s+ on all my regents (government state tests) because they prepared me so well. They transferred my transcripts no problem. I’m currently in Pharmacy School with a 4.0. I know many people that were able to do this. She shouldn’t say that the whole orthodox community is against this.

Agreed. This is not all Beis Yaakov. While what she is described does exist, there is a range within the ultra Orthodox schooling system. In my town there are two Beis Yaakovs. One for the extra pious and one for girls who lean towards the arts.
Julia undermines her own experience by being ignorant about the extent of the stringent route. Clearly her parents picked a school that was not suited for her. Sounds like they were pretty strict and unsympathetic. Unfortunate for her. All my sympathy until she starts slandering and painting with a broad brush.

I watched her Netflix documentary & was amazed at her strength, intelligence, & joie de vivre given the circumstances of her life before she left her orthodox life behind! She has had some setbacks in her personal life, but she figures out how to overcome obstacles deliberately placed in her path & learns from her mistakes. She lives big & loves the same way & has had to recover from trusting people who lie & cheat! I love her story & I hope the Netflix documentary comes back for another season! Bravo to you for showcasing this extraordinary woman & allowing her to tell her story without getting in the way. She is a beautiful human being! ❤

First of all, she is NO LONGER religious, I may be mistaken, but I dont even think her second husband is Jewish (again if I am wrong, I apologize) Second (and more important), She DEFINITELY takes it out on the religion. If she is no longer religious, that is HER RIGHT and NO ONE may say anything, but she has done everything that she can to make Orthodox religion a bad thing. Being Orthodox is BEAUTIFUL for those who wish and for those who no longer wish to be religious, FINE, but DO NOT badmouth the perfect religion. @@majakatic4862

Julia's reaction after leaving is extreme, too. Autonomy depends on the relationship within the family, not on Juduism rules. My parents were modern orthodox. My father worshiped the ground my mother walked on. What a beautiful relationship. I was educated, including going to the university, and nobody chose my husband.Julia has a new religion. It is very modern and is called me.
