I obtained a personal style the day I decided to wear what I actually want and stopped listening to other people's opinions (especially family). In the beginning it feels weird to be "overdressed" but then you realize that you are not overdressed, the others are simply underdressed. Bitch, I'm fabulous...

I have relatives who push me to buy things I hate, and to pass on things I love, even though I repeatedly say “keep your opinions to yourself”. I do best, and have no stress, when shopping alone. I want to wear what I like, not what some else likes, plus they have different shapes and needs. I’m sick of everyone telling me not to wear white bottoms, for example. Yes, they’re bad for their huge hips and thighs, but great on my skinny ones.

For me, a big part of being sure of my style is asking myself: would my 9 year old self like it or not? I feel like as kids we are more unapologetically ourselves, we don't feel the need to follow trends or anything. We just like things!

Interesting you say that....I've been acquiring pieces that are modern takes on things I loved in my childhood/teen years when I had more fun and less worries and more confidence to be creative and experiment. It's been fun to do this and fun ro get creative and figure out how to incorporate the injection of youth and playfulness to my now more adult and practical side. Doing this has helped me completely get a real personal style back for myself, as I lost it for a couple years while going through some hardships of life.
Now I look forward to getting dressed because it feels like me...all versions of me.

      @@gorlgoyle Dear Paige, gladly!
First of all, therapy really helped, but not just therapy, but actually commuting with myself to be honest, to recognize about my shopping binges and how bad it made me feel… talking to anyone about what’s difficult or literally an addiction for you is the first step always, to getting better.
It helped me too to start having cash again for my weekend expenses instead of using my card like crazy, I deleted most of my shopping apps and unsubscribed for tempting emails for things I knew I absolutely did not *need* no matter how hard I liked something.
I also cleansed my closet taking into consideration all the points that Amy refers to, what’s really me? And what do I see myself wearing? And sold most of it. Letting go of all that felt like a weight lifted off of my shoulders and freed me a bit.
Sometimes seeing everything you have stored, or available to yourself makes you realize about the fact that some minor details like good friends and relationships are super worth more than getting 20 shirts on sale. It’s overwhelming, really, but it’s the punch of reality you may need to realize you may have “shopped too much”.
I hope this helps 🧡 sending you lots of good vibes and love wherever u are

I’m at a place where I’m pretty happy w/ my personal style, but if there’s anything I learned from that experience it’s that overt trend-chasing will literally kill any meaningful advancements in that area lol. Of course, experimentation is necessary, but being HYPER selective w/ the trends you choose to participate in is one of the smartest things you can do imo! Unfollow some influencers if you have to tbh 🤷🏽

Dare to look different! If you love dresses, wear them, instead of jeans, or vice-versa. I always loved silk scarves, for example, and wore them when they weren’t “in”. They’re just a frequent element in my style, hot or not. If it’s situation-appropriate, comfortable and makes you feel great, wear it, it doesn’t matter if anyone else does, this type of confidence grows!

I'm really drawn to skater/grunge aesthetic ( lately with lots of color). How do you make this style fit into work appropriate clothing? I want to feel like myself at work, but hate that I end up just buying clothes to fit the mold of what is traditionally deemed okay to wear. A video on personal style ~but make it professional~ would be so so helpful

For me personally, the skater grunge aesthetic is very relaxed but also kind of edgy at the same time. (It may mean something completely different to you. You decide based on your interpretation of the aesthetic.) Perhaps, try different textures such as adding in leather to your outfit (leather blazer? boots?) or a more relaxed fitting suit (boyfriend blazer) or try the same color scheme/palette or try more edgier accessories (chain necklaces, chunkier soles on shoes, raw hemmed scarf, bigger and bolder accessories). Those are some suggestions but please make sure to check the dress code first.

Funky rings can really make a difference. I have started to buy vintage and modern rings and the mix is super rock and roll to me. They don’t even have to be super crazy rings. Mixing metals with rings can be a really cool look.

Not all styles can be made work appropriate, grunge is one example. To a great extent, one has to conform to workplace standards. Two different wardrobes is the answer.

    • @ShauntelleHamlett
      @ShauntelleHamlett 3 роки тому +7

I think it depends on what the skater/grunge aesthetic means to you and what your work environment is like. For me (a person who graduated from high school in the early 90’s), skater/grunge was flannel shirts, vintage tees, and shag/Courtney Love type hair. So if I wanted to bring that look into my business casual office, I’d mix wider leg trousers in maybe a window plaid or a pinstripe with a graphic tee and top it with a school boy blazer in a coordinating color. Or, if you have a more business professional office, I’d have a more traditional single button pantsuit with a linen or silk slightly over side tee and some really cool shoes- like those thick sole oxfords that are popular now.

i think i’m pretty happy with my personal style atm. in middle school my style wasn’t really my own, just what everyone else was wearing so i fit in. skinny jeans, cropped sweatshirts, etc. and now i hate those things because they remind me of middle school and how it felt like torture because i couldn’t be myself and my mental health was extremely bad. but now, i’m in high school at a performing arts school where everybody wears what they want and can express themself unapologetically, which is what made me feel really comfortable in what i like to wear. i’ve been wearing outfits i wouldn’t dream of wearing at my old school or at any public school, and i feel so much more happy. so please, don’t follow trends just to fit in, it will make you miserable. wear what YOU and ONLY YOU want to wear

I’m in college and I’m comfortable wearing the leggings, biker shorts, and sweatshirts but I realize that I use them as a “comfort” and as a way to not step out and wear what I actually want. Even though my own personal style consists of wearing over-the-top and wacky pieces. I would sometimes put on an outfit that was really “extravagant” or “classy,” but then I would talk myself down out of wearing it thinking about how others would look at me or if it was too much or would draw too much attention to myself.

I think I've finally found my own style. But the main problem I've run into while I was trying to find my personal style is that I'm constantly on pinterest scrolling for hours looking for specific outfits. I've found very few that speak to me. I love tutus, plaid, dress, ruffles, puff sleeves, corsets, hardware items like chains and grommets, and I LOVE layering. Not Disney Channel layering, but korean girl group circa 2018 layering. I don't find a lot of things like that on the internet and trust me, I've tried. But now I know for a fact I don't have a certain "aesthetic", but I know who I am and I know what I like.

My three vibes have always been ultrafemme, goth and historically inspired (the 70s, the Victorian era, Renaissance, Tudor English fashion, medieval)
And I found it really easy to channel those into a style by breaking it down into core components that define them. The vast majority of my clothes being dresses and long skirts, dramatic sleeves, luxe fabrics, wide leg of flared trousers if I wear them at all - anything that really flows. Pointy toed footwear, massive hats. Endless maximalism.
I made it into a Pinterest board and reddit post years ago and to this day it's still me, even as it evolves.

I loved this video! And hearing you explain your style. This approach is much more sustainable in every way than mindless trend following. For me to find my style I first had to find by body type (using the Kibbe/McJimsey method) then my colour season (deep autumn) and then finally my personal essence (style thoughts by rita helped with this a bit!). I'd describe my style as "stormy modern fairy" which translates to dainty, feminine, youthful parts (fairy) mixed with sleek cuts and staple trends such as mom jeans (modern) as well as a lot of deeper colours, touches of edge such as leather, and makeup such as black cat eyeliner (stormy!).

EVER SINCE I WAS BORN, I ONLY WEAR CLOTHES THAT ARE BOUGHT BY MY MOM OR CLOTHES THAT ARE GIFTED TO ME. SO I NEVER REALLY CARED ABOUT MY APPEARANCE OR WHAT I WEAR. NOW THAT I'M IN MY 20'S, I'M STARTING TO SLOWLY BUILD MY DREAM WARDROBE AND DISCOVER MY PERSONAL STYLE. THIS YEAR, I BOUGHT 3 OUTFITS FROM A THRIFT STORE. AND I LOVE THESE 3 PIECES SO MUCH, I WOULD WEAR THEM EVERYTIME I GO OUT. I NOTICED, I LOVE WEARING LONG DRESSES. NEUTRAL COLORS. SLEEVES. LAYERS. TRENCH COAT. EVEN THOUGH THE WEATHER IS MOSTLY HOT HERE. I FEEL MORE CONFIDENT WHEN I GET TO WEAR MY FAVORITE CLOTHES. I EVEN CHOPPED MY HAIR SHORT AND I FEEL GREAT BECAUSE IT'S EXACTLY THE LOOK I HAVE ALWAYS WANTED EVEN THOUGH OTHER PEOPLE THINK I LOOK BETTER WITH LONG HAIR. WHEN I WEAR WHAT I WANT AND LOOK HOW I WANT, I FEEL LIKE A BADASS.

When I was in my teens and early twenties my style was very well defined! But now that I’m in the working world (a teacher) and that I’m starting my 30’s, it’s been a struggle 🥴 I don’t like the way I look in my old clothes even though they still fit me, I just don’t feel like myself anymore in those colorful clothes that I loved to wear!
Here I am, trying out the neutrals and rediscovering what makes me feel good! So far, I know that skater skirts and dresses that accentuate my waist, are very flattering. Still working on it!

I took the 7 universal styles to create my own style and I am:
-traditional, romantic with touches of creative.
I am an inverted triangle, so now is easier to buy, but I has taken me a lot of experimentation to find what I love.

It's so real! No joke, I had a roommate just like that... so passive aggressive. Back handed "compliments" about everything from my eating habits, to the colors I'd pair together with my outfits and then when I pull into the apartment complex parkinglot after winter break I see her getting out of her car in ALMOST exactly the same outfit I was wearing in that moment and I wanted to scream lol 😆 My hair is also naturally curly and I've always worn it as such. She started curling her hair and would tell people it was naturally curly when it was obviously not. I can't even hahahaha

True! When I was in class (no it is online) I went preppy-ish style/relaxed, but with my blowout done. No make up, cause it is hot more of the time here and I really didn't want to mess my oily face more 😅
and my female classmates were bad gossiping about me being over dressing and taking too much to just going to sit and listent in class.
when the year almost dijiste, they were wearing cute outfits, and beautiful hairstyles...
I wasn't jealous, just smiling inside like: girl, you just give me the reason ay the end.😂😂
I love cute things, so I really light up when see beautiful around me.
Yeah, they were exoecting I stop, bit I didn't. Being cute-femenine it is my style and I am not giving up. It si my podwer, I am not letting anyone bring me down as I allowed in the past.

i don’t wear every style out there but will participate in some. my friends always note my outfits like all the time. especially out of uniform days (if you have uniform yk). i try and love to express my fav colors, pieces, and myself through what i wear. i lean towards pastels/skirts/feminine yet put together outfits. i really have noticed myself tearing up in this video because i’ve always wanted to wear whatever since i was young but told i was overdressing by peers. yet recently (like past two years) i’ve been coming out of my shell and trying what i like even if it’s fancy. i remember my first out of uniform where i tried and i felt so good. now my grade has like doubled in size stepping into an older grade and i’m both nervous and excited for our first out of uniform. some of those comments and remarks still hurt me about being so extra, but i really want to show myself. i already know some ppl are gonna judge me and say remarks but i’m preparing to overcome it. (wish me luck!!!) i really just want to say ty because this video really captures what i feel and think being kinda known for style in my school and by my friends. i’m kinda considered “popular” by some ppl (they’ve told me that and it’s so awkward for me 👉👈) and lots of the girls have ummm… fashion but not style. i hope to be shown in a kind light (i’m not one for drama) with good style and just be friends with who i am because i like them. so ty for this video ❤️

I love this video so much-it’s such a reminder of owning what you KNOW you’re meant to wear and ignoring the fluff of overbuying and overconsumption just to keep up with what’s popular. I’ve paired down my clothing collection so much and am loving just being more honest with myself about what I love myself in, what looks make me feel beautiful and confident, and not spending money on anything unless is 100% represents who I am and what I stand for. I love fashion channels like yours that advocate for choosing personal style over fast trends. ❤️❤️

YES! I usually dress more on the vintage and preppy side which i think suits my work perfectly but people at work dress super casual and boring so I stand out a TON. I've been told to try not to call too much attention to myself because the area is a bit unsafe but tbh I don't think it matters what you wear for someone who wants to rob you. I love wearing midi skirts, block heels and I stand up tall because I know I look great

The most consistent element in my style is contrast. I like pairing opposites because it’s interesting and exciting to me. I also love whimsical pieces (metallics, layered sequins, texture, beading, and foils). The 1970s is my favorite fashion era. I love the prints and colors. Overall I’m pretty modest as far as being covered up though. My day-to-day style is different than when I “get dressed.” When I get dressed for an occasion, it’s all party party party.

I am absolutely in lovee with this video and your personality!! I followed the steps and was able to really captivate my whole style, personality and values when designing my moodboard which was interesting as i was focusing on fashion, but was able to see my personal style outside of fashion aswell, e.g- I realised that my value of loving to make others laugh was reflected in my love for colour in clothes and how it was also inspired by my jamaican heritage and many other things. I've been watching so many videos after realising I owned way too many statement pieces and was worried that I was following trends, but your video is the only one that really helped me to see me and what I actually like. It's so important within this generation; not saying that you can't take inspo from trends, but as you perfectly described, having your own personal flair is so important. THANK YOU AGAIN !! I've subscribed, God bless! xx

Unfortunately, being plus size still extremely limits your available options. Finally, this is beginning to change. I’m seeing more stylish options for everyone, not just black polyester skirts and pants! H&M has some great plus-sized styles now, but sadly, they’re still heavy on the synthetics (when I’m overweight, breathability is more important than ever!). I’ve always tried to stay in the normal BMI range, for my long-term health, but it does make shopping a lot easier, too. I’m looking forward to there being no separate “Plus Sizes”, just a range of sizes to fit everyone, in every garment offered. This was once the case, but the population is just heavier now, the US average woman is 5’4” and size 16, not 5’9” and size 6, as most clothes are designed for. I don’t know a single female who approaches that “ideal”, it’s just not realistic.

Clothes just "flow" better on clothes hanger bodies, that's why " skinny or outfit?" Is actually a thing. That is my problem. There are a lot of options now (the 80's and 90's were super hard) but the clothes don't fit or hang the same way they do on slimmer bodies. Buying larger clothes isn't the answer, then you just end up swallowed up by baggy clothes. I am at a loss as how to get that natural feel without buying bespoke clothes.

Excellent advice, Amy, thanks. I was also overly influenced by the Boho style, which was big in California, where I live. I took advantage of a significant weight loss and age milestone, to jettison this strained style. I’m so much more “me” in the more simple, sophisticated, classic styles I wore during most of my life, except for the Boho period. It’s funny, Boho is now a big trend in Europe and the UK. There will always be a remnant of this style, I think.
