Here's something to consider: if you throw that group set on a road bike (especially the Allez), you could make a video about major hill climbs/gradients on a road bike using a MTB cassette. I know a of people who have trouble getting into hills on road bikes because the gearing is so high - Perfect way to get people spinning.
The other thing you could do is see how big of a front chainring you can fit in combination with that cassette since the road bike frame should be able to take something much bigger than 40T.
I'm rocking a 44T front 1x with 11-50 in the rear and it's definitely the best of both worlds (speed/climb) but I'm limited by my gravel/MTB frame. Really curious how it might work on a road bike. Either way, great video and looking forward to more!
😂 I have no idea if you made a choice or changed to a whole different topic… I couldn’t keep up with your side tracking. You, my friend, have the gift of gab. World class level chatter. I’m sure you said ended on a good note. I’m sure you will do (or have done) the right thing with that set. Looking forward to the next video. I’ll watch again to figure out what I missed 😅🚴♂️
I like the idea of putting it on the road bike now that you have explained it. Methinks Munchkin should decide.
that cassette is the same one that came with my wifes eagle upgrade kit for her mtb, hg hub fitting for the older type hubs
Nice vídeo... I would really like to know the weight of each component... I have a gravel bike with this group and apparently it seems to be quite heavy... maybe it's not
Thank you. I think you should be able to find the weight online. The heavy part is the cassette.
I have apex on my cx bike and the gear lever does get caught on my bar's all the time.
They took that into account when designing this one…so it shouldn’t happen anymore.
Did we ever get an update on this groupset and a review?
It’s been built onto my winter bike and currently testing it out so far so good though.

That's supposed to say "Thanks Dave " ....but , tkona rovehanks to ya as well !
Where you live... I see the climbing you do. I live in a hilly place too, and I love 1x 42 11-42. We've seen Dylan and many others run very high tooth chainrings with MTB cogs, and for all intents those pros are roadies. I think if you regularly ride Golden ratio routes (1 mile with 100ft elevation),
1:1 gear ratio is perfect. Whether you play in the 42 tooth octave or the 50 tooth octave is preference and wallet. That drivetrain would be delectable if the trifox and apex crank set could take a 46-50T chainring. Seems like there is an aero looking Red or Force 1x that was in a Tour road race.
I'm all Shimano so far, but am considering an apex like that for drop bar XCM racing. Some Tour Divide HTs set up like that. Hot drivetrain. Nice looking brifters. Here's my address....
You can totally put a 50t chain ring on…I was just looking at a rival aero chainring for it.
Wonder how much they’ll charge for the the 12 speed Apex group set…..
Seems really complicated to me Dave.
Glad to see you haven't gone totally electric!
It’s not any more complicated that other groupsets…well the axs ones are dead easy to fit as they are wireless so less faff to put on.
I have just done the c2c in 1 day and could really have done with that cassette .11,868 ft of climbing . I have a 11-34 😅
It would be ideal for long hilly rides! Well so long as you weren’t wanting to ride fast.
Hi Dave, take the GRX off & replace with your new Sram kit. Then fit your GRX set up on tour Firefox frame to make a road/ light gravel bike 🙂
id say gravel for that groupset, only cos im thinking of getting it for my gravel bike
Canyona grizl 6 1by is better than grizl 8 1by ?
@@DaveNoakes canyona grizl 6 1by is model with 1x11 mechanical sram apex and grizl 8 1 by is 1x12 grx
Put it on the bike with the dropper and install a dropper post lever. I would like to see a review on the groupset and a lever. Gives you two subjects for video content.
I was thinking but a dropper lever on drop bars will be awkward to use…I can use my current set up on the hoods or drops…with a lever I’m restricted to one.
Should’ve asked for a new frame and forks to go with your group set 😂
Tkona rovehanks Dave....I think it should go on ......my 650B Kona rove , dude ! ......Selfish , I know , but...
Sram NX Cassette fits on a 9speed freehub, that is cool. Not the Apex for a 11s hub.
@@DaveNoakes MTB cassettes from 42 to52 Max.sprocket fitting ON 9speed Hubs. I bought a Sunrace Cassette 11-50 that fit ON old Shimano 9speed freehub. I
made 3 Videos ON my Channel from the Change 3by10 to 1by 12 and 1 for the cassette
SRAM makes an Apex lever that is designed for a dropper!
They do for the 11 speed Apex. These 12 speed levers look different though - so might not match?
@@markianross good point, I haven't seen both in person too see if they "match"
@@DaveNoakes 12sp doesn't matter unless the brake hood changed, which it might have!
Put the casette aside and don't let that monster dictate your decision.
Have Marin send you a Nicasio 2 to put the new groupset on….lol
@@DaveNoakes I’m a fan of the Nicasio, but either would solve your dilemma of not having to mess up your other bikes set up…
Road bike nice to see something a bit quirky!
Don’t take off the top tier GRX and put that bottom tier SRAM stuff on it. It’s a step backwards. Give me GRX 810 11 speed over anything SRAM has. I own SRAM AXS XPLR and it’s poor imo.
This is very good point, I love the GRX and was wondering if it would be a downgrade.
I vote for Apex + Trifox
Keep that fully sorted Marin as it is
