Well, 3500 is more than my roadbike and my daily commuter bike together… so 600£ group set it is 😂
If 3500 is the value that manufacturers think this is worth, then they lost the plot, clearly.
If you are an amateur/recreational cyclist you are mad to go more than mid range components.. unless you are pro you just don’t need anything more.. 🤷🏼♂️
Regarding the two smallest gear ratios of the groupsets: Its not the teeth difference which defines the gear ratio. The ratio is defined by front teeth divided by rear teeth.
That means 30/34=0,88235 and 46/52=0,88461. The smaller ratio is the easier Gear which means that the grx400 has a very slightly lower gearing.
Was about to comment the same thing. You beat me to it. The difference is academic at worst And any perceived difference is bias in the presenters head rather than legs.
@@clickbait4820 yes riding the sram would be like riding the grx with 30 teeth in the front and 33,9 in the back (mathematically of course) 😬. My guess is that the ceramic bottom bracket saved at least 50 watts so they felt like the gearing was easier 😂😂😂

@@MRAlexzocktify I agree with your observation, good point! 👍 And want to add a thought to the discussion: As the groupsets are in the video the SRAM red has a faster top gear. We can use that extra range to put a smaller 42t chainring on and get an easier uphill gear instead of the faster downhill gear. The downhill gear with 42/10 is still the same as Shimano's 46/11.
But the uphill gear is much easier: 42/52 = 0.808.
I think many "normal" riders would benefit from this easier gear. But of course the needed gear ratios are highly personal and depend heavily on things like training status or terrain. Pro riders and strong enthusiasts/semi pros may decide to stay with the faster gears on Red - or they decide from race to race what to use. 😂 Somebody who is riding on flat roads or smooth gravel has different gearing needs to somebody riding in the mountains, sometimes on single tracks or is bike packing. :-)
One more point. I think this GRX groupset with 2x10 is still expensive - considering that many mountainbikes with a better prices have 12speed groupsets (with hydraulic brakes). And below GRX 10speed starts the entry level gravel market where bikes are much cheaper but the difference in gear ratios is not that big with 2x9. And we can always build a 3x9 setup. :-) Of course some compromises in other areas are appearing: As far as I know there are no hydraulic disc brakes for drop bars below 10speed (only mechanical discs or hybrid discs). E.g. there are 1x10 options from Microshift (Taiwan) with the same gear range as Shimano GRX 1x11.
Nice one, gents! RX400 user here. It's a workhorse of a groupset, and as you stated, the low replacement cost translates to less worry overall. I replaced the original cassette with a SunRace 11-40 and have all the low gear I need.
This. The 11-34 is a bit narrow for a 2x gravel bike (depending on the terrain of course), but the derailleur is capable of much more. Without modification I would go up to 11-38. 40 is certainly possible, but didn't feel great when I tried. I opted to use a RoadLink DM (30 bucks) and run 2 wheelsets: one with 11-40, one with 11-42. Totally fine.
Does 11-40 works witch default grx 400 derailleur ?
@@Milian89 RD RX400, whose tooth capacity is rated at 41T. My setup is 45T (48/32T Praxis rings with 11-40T cassette), so proceed at your own risk. I'm able to crosschain in a pinch but don't make a habit of it. The 32/40 low end is the feature.
I use an 11-42 cassette without a road link. Just needed 4 extra links for the chain. But it shifts well. Massive range.
Even if you'd go 11 speed. You can get the deore M5100 11-42t casette for like 50-60 quid.
GRX600 is also shockingly good value. And being 105 at it's core it just shifts better. It has the short throw of the last mechanical shimano top end groupsets.
You are so right to mention the ongoing costs of the groupset. Chainset, chain and cassette will need replacing from time to time. Unless you are racing and have money to burn, something like GRX 400 will do everything you need and you'll be able to afford to keep it in great nick!
4:48 - That is in fact, not accurate. The GRX has 475% of range, the SRAM setup has 520%, which is - in fact - wider.
HOWEVER
the bottom gear on both bikes works to about 0.88 and the top gear on the sram system - 46/10 is barely useful for anything other than spinning out downhill. For all intents and purposes those bike have equally useful gearing range.
I run 42/10-52 on my gravel bike, it is much better distribution in my opinion. You have a 1:1 ratio gear and a gear that saves you when you have a lot of bikepacking gear and going up offroad climbs. Top end is more than enough for me with 42/10 I believe it spins out at 65km/h.
I am mainly road bike but use 53/11 from lights and even up some hills, next bike be SRAM red axs with dropper and alloy frame be similar to their lightest bike on here, I am going 50t front as never found hills need compact gearing yet, might look to go off road a bit with tubular, at moment front 22mm and rear 25mm
30/34 is the same as 46/52. You will get exactly the same speed in those teeth. So I do not care about tooth difference between those, but the result is the same. Now on the other end it might be different, but for climbing on the lowest speed is exactly the same. And the only difference was the weight or just mindset.
My bike has the GRX Tiagra stuff, and I like it. Good to see you basically confirm its decent as well.
Your maths is wrong. The lowest gear with GRX is the 30t small front ring with 34t max on the cassette. 30÷34 = 0.882. With Sram Red it's 46t at the front and 52t on the cassette. 46÷52 = 0.885. So on the GRX, one revolution of the crank equals 0.882 complete revolutions of the wheel. On Sram Red, one revolution of the crank equals 0.885 revolutions of the wheel. So GRX has a slightly lower lowest gear than Sram Red.
Actually, you can get a 40 tooth chainring for Red.

I just built up my first gravel bike with the next step up to the shimano groupset here, RX600 11 speed but with a small tweak, I'm using a SRAM PG1130 11--36 cassette. Paired with the RX600 46/30 Crankset, it's basically perfect gearing imo. Shifting is not as silky smooth as I would expect if it were a shimano cassette but I feel like I just got a bent derailleur hanger out of the box. Ratios are perfect for the type of riding I do. The last 3 or 4 smallest cogs are basically the same as the 105 11-30 cassette on my road bike so on the flats I get nice tight spacing between gears with the 46T big ring. I'm basically just as fast on the flats as I am on my road bike, I spin out between 55-60 kph but realistically why would you wanna go any faster on a gravel bike. The 30T small ring with the 36T cog on the cassette also means I get easier gearing than Shimano's suggested max of 34T. The derailleur can handle it no problem.
Yeah Shimano is always conservative with their derailleurs. I'm running RX600 shifters with an 812RD and a Suntour 11-50 cassette. Works fine. I added a Goatlink11 to make the shifting smoother and make me less paranoid with the derailleur strain. Mullet gears I want (my bike doesn't take a front derailleur) and a fraction of the cost of eTap or Di2
Jimmy's math is dogshit. The 30/34 on the tiagra actually gives you a (very slightly, its pretty much the same - 0.884 vs 0.882 ratio) lower gear than the SRAM mullet. but SRAM will have a slightly faster top speed

Well this use case proves it's not always the case.
The GRX400 does have smaller more consistent pacing though.
With the GRX 812 rear mech you can use an 11-42t. With an 46-30 front you'd have plenty of small gears.
I’ve just converted a hybrid flat bar to drop bar gravel and left the Tourney TX groupset on it. It’s actually really smooth. I think for the vast majority of people, a lower end groupset is fine. If you’ve got £3.5k to spend, then have at it but I don’t think it makes that big a difference.

Producing an electronic shifter is actually much cheaper than a complicated mechanic one, less need for very small parts and very precise tolerances. So in actuality e-shifting should be and I think will be cheaper down the road.

It's time for 2024 bikes with grx 12 speed and the insane ratio. Today I was climbing with my ebike and had to do roughly 350 watts for an extended period of time with eco mode. I guess with a regular bike, bikepacking gear and my weight I will need the 51 on a gravel bike. Was very happy to have 11-51 today.
Lads lads lads. Solid video. Go 600 grouppo. Maintain with bike shop. Easy. Cheap chains cassettes. I have low mid and top end bikes. My bike steed just so nice. Mechanical 105. Job done.
Please bring more videos about people on bikes rather than just what bikes to buy.
Imo the bike is a tool to enjoy places and people rather and is more important than the bike itself
I’ve had GRX800/GRX600 and currently have Rival AXS and truth be told I prefer the GRX800. Great video as usual and also the build video!

I paid 900€ for my Rival AXS / GX AXS Eagle mix with Rotor powermeter crankset in 2021.This was a no brainer in a time when GRX 1x11 was going for 750€ and more.
I love riding in the New Forest. Report every single close pass in the hope of making it more enjoyable for other riders. The gravel trails are also epic.
Great video and good insight on the Sram Rival option. I converted to wireless Sram Rival from regular Sram Rival on my bike. Pure vanity purchase, but I absolutely love it!
Interesting test, me I go with the Shimano as it's what I'm used to and the thought of £450 for a cassette is bonkers.
A problem to notice about the GRX: You are very limited with big handlebar bags for bikepacking. The actuation of the lever can get in the way of your bag, inducing shifting issues...
I use tiagra 2x10’hydraulic.
It’s work flawlessly. Cheap part. Durable, and on gravel the 10 speed gap is better to shift since I just shifted to necessary gear.
I don’t even need 105’level.
My Grizl CF SL came with a 46/30 up front and a 11-34 cassette, but the GRX400 rear derailleur can take a 11-36 MTB cassette which is what I run. Can climb some very steep gravel roads now, so the cheaper groupset does have a very low gearing, the lowest that Shimano has actually.
Shimano for me. The repair costs would factor as well. Stark contract to the £350 decathlon bike...... 😅 How about a ride comparison on a trainer stand blindfolded? Use Jimmy as the rider. Francis can help him from one bike to the next. Everything would be based on feel. 👍🇮🇪

Shifted to the rival gx set and i love it. Had a wolftooth chainring On my crankset and it fits perfect together with my rival gx Mullet setup.

I’ve just ordered a Ribble bike with the GRX groupset cos it’s really hilly here, so to help myself out on the super hilly rides I also bought a shimano 11-36 cassette for £25! 😮
The electronic shifting is certainly premium but at the end of the day it's a luxury item for the guy who has everything and money is no object! He probably has a luxury Mercedes Benz he carries it around on. A good middle of the range mechanical group set will serve the same purpose extremely well.

I’ve got Tiagra on my road bike and it is flawless. I think roadies have a bit of snobbery towards cheaper group sets but I think you just pay more for weight and electronic shifting
Was going to same the same. Newer Tiagra on one of my road bikes. 105 and Ultegra on others and really it's a toss up if you throw out the weight differences.
Another little hack is to replace (when they're worn out obviously) your stock cables/housing for the nicer coated cables and compressionless housing. Makes an already good groupset that bit closer to feeling like the top-shelf stuff.

Now with sram upgrading their groupsets, the old d1 groupsets were sold cheap. So I snagged a force axs etap for so little money I didn't trust the website would send me anything but a brick before I had an unboxing experience I didn't expect from a groupset. Nice box, nice presentation.
I was very worried about going 1x until I noticed the big jumps were down the cassete and the road-related ones were tight. Which means I might be having a big jump when climbing but not when I'm chasing strava segments :P

Obviously being a bike tech nut I always drool over rival axs swapping my Grx 10x2 canyon grizl al, but as soon as I get out and ride it there is honestly nothing justifying even spending just 800-1100€ on a groupset upgrade.

4:40 hi jimmy, it's me again. what you are saying about 34:34 = 1:1 is correct, the negative 6 thing is not. gears are ratios, not differences. the easiest gear on the grx bike is 30/34 = 0.88 = 46/52, so the two bikes have about the same easiest gear. on the top end side, the sram bike has more top end, as 46/11 = 4.18 < 4.60 = 46/10. so yes, the sram bike has more range as 4.18/0.88 = 475% < 520% = 4.60/0.88

I work as a bike mechanic PT and I used to think Sram and Shimano were equal. But now, I think Shimano makes a better product throughout their range. Low end Sram is pretty junky. Low end Shimano is still quite good. Red vs Dura Ace is equal and out of reach for me.
Shimano just has engineering down. While they certainly have their issues (hollowforge cranks), overwhelmingly it all just works. You can find it in any country (something a lot of westerners under appreciate). And when you swap out the jockey wheel or whatever, its just going to work without issue.
I have GRX 800 one by 11speed mechanical and I would choose it again. If you’re doing adventure riding it’s one less thing to charge if you’re away from a power source for an extended period of time. If I were to go to electronic shifting I would probably buy SRAM but definitely not Red. Force works equally well with a small weight penalty but costing much less.

Sram brakes are the worst I’ve used! I have them on my bike and I totally agree with Francis.
For someone who doesn't race like me, GRX is fine. I don't even have proper hydraulic brakes, I have the juin tech f1s and the work fine with a rival 22 mechanical. As Francis said, I have tried and testes Shimano brakes and they are the best. But the shifting mechanism, even with mechanical I give it to SRAM
You can race with GRX400 which is what this video shows. It saves very little power and weight when going up.

I did this my canyon grail that I use for gravel races has GRX 800 but I realized this past winter after riding 1k miles on the trainer I was just wearing out my GRX parts. So I bought a canyon endurance tiagra for the trainer…and it’s a minimal difference slightly smoother shifting and obviously a 2 by compared to 1by but shimano has mechanical shifting figured out. I have no desire to go electronic because of the cost if it was cheaper for sure I would go.
I have a GRX400 groupset (with GRX600 cranks) bike and Sram Rival AXS bike. If I would buy again I won't spend the money on Rival AXS. The GRX400 with 46/30T chainring and 11/36T has a nice spread of gears and work flawless for less than half the money... And brakes are also great on the GRX.
I'm riding a GRX 800 Di2. For me it's not about the quality of the components or the reduced weight but simply about electronic shifting. It doesn't make me a better rider but a happier one. Electronic shifting is just so nice.
If in the next generation electronic shifting comes down to GRX 600 level I'll happily buy that instead of 800.

For aluminum frames, Shimano is the obvious choice over SRAM AXS mullet, which I ride. For my build, I chose Force shifters, paired with GX derailleur. I cannot understate how painful it was to shell out $750 for two shifters and two calipers.
agree. the grx brakes are great. i have some Sram Rival brakes on a RB, and I noticed the difference immediately.
Nice one. I set up GRX on my gravel/commute/everything bike over lock down so a mix of 600 and 800 bits as no complete group sets available. I have sram force on my road bike. Shia no GRX brakes are the business-definitely feel better than any other brakes I have ever used and outperform SRAM brakes wise. For bike packin my rear cassette on GRX group set is actually a SRAM 11-36 11 speeed with 46/30 chain rings up front but I use that bottom gear a lot going up hill off road with a load and would happily go smaller.Where SRAM beats shimano in my mind is the gear ratios available-especially if you are committed to 1x mullet-you can go 38 or 40 up front and 10-52 out back for a huge range and shimano 1x doesn’t compete. SRAM also does a great job with road ratios available on 2X and I do prefer the ease of the electronic shifting set up (I carry spare batteries -chinese mimics-for time away from home on road bike and easier to charge, no internal battery etc etc) but if SHimano could sort out a better range of ratios I’d go with them for the braking every time

Would go with a hybrid mix of parts of groupsets. Currently on a rival 1 build CX bike without the fd housing stop on down tube which limits choices. That is not geared the best for where I live. So changing groupsets I would go rival axs shifters and derailleurs for the range. Possibly apex axs if it ever comes out due to costs, Shimano grx brakes for better braking plus the grx cross top levers. Choose my own crankset which is the FSA K force on the bike now. Shimano chainrings/chain, cassttes for better shifting and still has the hg nearly universal freehub on wheels.
That is a small cassette for 10 speed nowadays. You can easily find 11-42 cassettes and larger like up to 51, but then you need to worry about derailleur capability, especially on a 2x system.
I don’t see any point in trashing a bike off-road when consumable parts costs that much.
It’s justifiable on a road bike as the parts will last longer if maintained and cleaned.
GRX 400 is pretty good, but GRX 600/800 are way better and are available with Di2, 1X and servo wave brakes, which in my view kick SRAM HRDs into the long grass..
Yep. Writing off a rear derailleur that costs several hundred when you get a stick caught in there or crash is ridiculous.

9 out of 10 people ride Deore SLX/XT mechanical or Sram equiv.
My Gravel bike has Tiagra or at least some of it, and no complaints regarding shifting or even gear ratios which is as wide as modern 12 speed systems what I do occasionally notice is the lack of a clutch on the rear mech. Though not enough to Replace with a GRX mech!
Just replace it. Your chainstay on your frame is worth more then 50 quid.

GRX. I ride SRAM Rival on my Argon 18 gravel bike. Not electric. Works great in 1X setup. Doesn’t cost more than my bike either.
Just a note, Stem length also can depend on Bike size. My XS Gravel bike came with a 60mm stem and feels perfectly balanced.

Do you know anyone with 120mm? I always used that so far but thinking to make trek Emonda ALR about 7.8kg with SRAM red axs and dropper with tubular 22mm front and 25mm rear but thinking to use off-road a bit
I found switching from a 2x 9speed to a 1x 12 speed was a great Change. I got tighter gear ratio and more range. But same could of been said if I got a 10 or 11 speed 2x. It just depends what you are comparing to and coming from.

The only thing in GRX400 that I was not happy with was crankset range - 46/30 - I changed it to Tiagra 48/34
Also, the Rival shifters are a newer design than the Red at the moment (they just updated Force) and the updated Rival/Force shifters are much more comfortable.

To be honest, the SRAM group set is what I would like, but the thought of the cost to replace parts is a real killer, especially for a person who is not a professional cyclist. And let’s be frank, I can save a lot of weight getting rid of the belly fat 😂

It is double what I paid for my Trek Domane with ultegra di2 just 5 years ago.
I think a groupset makes a big difference in how the bike feels. From hood ergonomics, braking and shifting. I have Sram Axs 2x on a bike and GRX Di2 2x on another and I prefer the Di2. Hoods feel better, shifting is more refined and braking is, yes better. With that said I am building up a new bike that will be 1x with Sram Eagle transmission(UDH) because I am curious. To be continued ...
I have tiagra and its great! basically the same as this grx 400 but with compact chainring on the front, super cheap replacement parts too

I have the Canyon Grail cf SL 7 all carbon with GRX 800/600 and paid under $3k, 500 less than the Sram red groupset. GRX is perfect for gravel - I only have electronic on my road bikes (and fair to Sram I like look of their Rival axs)
I dont know what 400 is like, but I know a mix of 600 and 800 11 speed 1x is very good and dont desire anything more, well a bigger cassette will by my next upgrade when this one wears out, but for a gravel bike its about right.
Nice comparison! I’m even cheaper with M4100 11-46 & RD m5120. Shifts fine with Microshift shifter.

I have done the responsible thing before, where I start with the low, mid, range groupset, to eventually upgrading it to the top tier. Spending more at the end of that journey.
I feel like the shimano groupset is kind of the sweet spot, it has enough gears for most people but i definitely feel like the gear spacing is more on the grx groupset instead of the price itself, most people say tigara is perfect
I’ve got an Orbea Terra with the GRX400. Seems great to me, but I’ve nothing other than a 10 year old cheap hybrid to compare it with :)
More and more channels are highlighting the less expensive bike parts and bikes and it's a pleasure. I find cycling and golf to be very similar in that they know they have an elitist audience, and they constantly try to convince you that if you spend thousands of dollars, you can golf or ride like the top pros. Now those among us with common sense know that's just not true, but it takes channels like yours and all the others to show us what cheaper gear is quality and which is just garbage. Speaking of which, I'd love to get your opinion on the Super Team carbone wheels. I have a pair that I've had for about 5 years now and many thousands of miles and they're still in great shape. Paid less than $300 US when they were on sale on Amazon for the 38mm. There's no reason you can't have a really quality bike for less than $2,000 including carbon wheels. The answer is grx 815di2 48/31 front and 11/36 rear (sunrace made this cassette)
You could get two identical wacky waving inflatable arm-flailing tubemen "tubes" and test different fans for indoor training. Although an idea probably for next year, or southern hemisphere.

Zero experience with Sram as never even ridden a bike with anything other than Shimano. That said i have two choices in my bikes

Ultegra Di2 on my road bike - this is simply the nuts.
For me when i can justify the expense i will go to Di2 on the gravel bike - its just so much nicer than mechanical.
Talking of expense the phrase i heard somewhere made me chuckle..... "If you have to buy Dura Ace yourself - you do not need it" - guess you could apply the same to Sram Red / Campag SR.

SRAM brakes are just not good at all.
It's the same on MTB. I riding Force and Guide Ultimate and I'm not happy with both.
As much as I like SRAM and consistency, I still consider mixing XTR and XX1 on the MTB.
On the gravel and road I will definitely try Trickstuff or Hope calipers.
Shimano GRX and a plane ticket to the States for some legendary gravel races.

I see most electronic groupsets as 1/2 aspirational & 1/2 frivolous. I'm currently rocking a single speed steel bike from Wabi Cycles, and I love it. I just don't have a need for more gears at the moment.

Definitely the Shimano grx just because of the replacement parts . How much to replace a rear derailleur on sram . The sram cassette is almost the same price as the entire Grx groupset .great content as always

The tooth count is a mistake. The ratio of front to back is what tells you how they are geared and the combinations are effectively identical a ratio of 0.88:1.00.
30:34 is actually ever so lightly lighter a gear than 46:52. If you feel a difference, it’s in your head

Replacement parts are a lot more expensive then Shimano though.
I would go with the lower level groupset and upgrade the cassette and chain when they wear out. Derailleurs and associated parts don't make that great a difference. And I could (and do) lose the weight difference on the Loo.
The Shimano "free stroke" or Sram's "Contact Point" adjustment is also price/model related, pros or people with an extra finger phalanx mutation don't need this anyway
I can compare my own GRX 800 mechanical vs SRAM Force AXS equipped bikes. Shimano Brakes 'feel' more powerful. SRAM have more adjustment with level reach and modulation which DOES make them feel a lot better when adjusted. I think lots of people DON'T do this or are not aware. SRAM are a lot quieter even going through a puddle the GRX grate and grind for a bit before clearing.
Shimano gearing isn't great when compared to AXS. GRX misses gears all of the time. I've had one missed gear on AXS and it corrected itself in a split second.
Rival is the sweet spot but with a 10-44 cassette.
I recently changed from force to rival xplr electronic (with force cranks). The shifting was great but the bike actually weighed more after ! However, it was about the shifting for me. Totally agree about how much better shimano brakes are. BUT..... have you tried the hope callipers ? there is a test for you !

I've watched many groupset videos. One question always remains: what about durability? Perhaps that's difficult to test? After how many kilometers do you need to replace a specific groupset? What's the price/kilometers ratio?
Probably nobody will ever do such a test because you would need a machine to ride a bike until it's worn out. (?)
