In 1996 I visited my sick aunt in Slovenija (Koroska Bela) for ten days. The whole town was excited to see me and I visited at least 6 households every day. By the third or fourth visit, I could no longer even see food let alone eat any of it, so I started declining what was offered. People complained to my aunt, who told my mother, who in turn was super worried I wasn't eating. Not to go too much into my youth but this was not an unfounded concern. However by the end of my stay, I gained so much weight that I couldn't button my pants, only holding them up with my belt. After returning to Canada, my mother saw my chubby face and said in relief, "Oh thank God. You ate." Yes you will be fed.
An old Croat once told me, recalling the Slovenians in the Yugoslav army in the 1950's. "Slovenci su zajebani". Slovenians only cared about Slovenians.

And potatoes? On the first day of our most recent visit this summer we helped our cousin, & her whole family, harvest potatoes. Shoes off, toes in the mud, we helped gather hundreds of pounds of potatoes. The beautiful, friendly people are the most memorable thing about this wonderful country.

Slovenian landscapes are like walking in a fairytale. I loved visiting Slovenia. It is such a beautiful place! And the people were very nice. I will say that when I visited, I was in a rural area outside of Zuzemberk, and many of the locals did not speak English, especially older people. I clicked on the like button as soon as the video started, as I knew it would be good fun and i would learn something. But by the end of the video I missed something extra, like an applause button. UA-cam should definitely have an applause button for videos like this. You have just increased my desire to visit Slovenia. ¡Saludos from Spain!

Greetinga from Poland Barbara! I've never been to Slovenia but your description of homeland makes me wanna visit fellow slavic country. Maybe a honeymoon trip in near future :) Some thoughts about expression on Your face and tone of voice: We have literally the same situation in Poland ;D Everybody I pass by on the street has a depressed look by Western standards. It can be troubling for many visitors who are used to seeing happy people saying hello when met during a walk. Most people (like 99% of population) also use soft, monotonous voice or sound very tired. Imho it's a strange quirk that came in 1945 with communism. Basically an Eastern Bloc thing that can be fixed with alcohol and good food on the table among friends and loved ones. Contrary to most I tend to smile a lot without a reason and draw attention with my ginger hair resulting in many Poles thinking I am a tourist from Scandinavia or Ireland. I do not know really why I am in that smiling 1% that breaks the depressing impression but I try everyday to make someone smile or make their day better by being polite, small talk or simple gestures like a helping hand with carrying stuff in my job or holding a door for someone. Anyway I urge You to visit Poland someday, it's a beautiful country with colorful history and culture. Contrary to most EU countries we suffered no terrorist attacks ( we love our zeros), there are no "nogo zones", public transport and streets are safe and clean. Much love from Poland !!!
My wife from Medvode makes the coffee on our stovetop. My friend's and I always called this campfire coffee because we make it this way when hunting in the mountains
Poz iz Rhode Islanda! Croatian-American here with roots in Istra and Kvarner. Visited Ljubljana for the first time about a month ago and your video is spot on 😂😂😂 Made a new follower out of me 🤘
This video made me laugh, love your sense of humor 😂 being from Norway, another country with small population, we actually have quite a lot of similarities I learned.
Some older relatives went to Slovenia in the 1960s to see where our ancestors came from (a village near Cerknica), and they were told by people they met not to go there because “that’s where the witches are.” I hope to go there before I die…
You can also see witch Ursula every year at carneval in time of Pust - in the end of februar or first half of march. It is awsome and crazy. And Cerknica is one of interesting place in that time in Slovenia. 🙂
People of Slovenië are not only friendly but well educated , polite and modest too. I go to Austria and Slovenia this summer. Thank you for the nice video 👍🤗
Slovenians in my opinion have kept both good stuff from eastern as well as western Europe traditions and values. From professionalism, sports, government, values and personality its like a Scandinavian nation with slavic twist, a western type of democracy with strong firm base of socialism (equality for all). I was not born in Slovenia, but i kept visiting my relatives all my childhood and saw it as a wonderland in comparison to war torn Serbia. I moved to Slovenia as soon as i was old enough so my parents would let me live with my Grandmother at 14 years age. After 16 years its still wonderland for me and maybe even more so as i traveled around the world and saw how bad things look like everywhere else. USA and western Europe is consumed by greed, Asia is overcrowded and dirty, the rest of the world poor and unstable by war and crisis. Here we complain a lot, yeah salary is not as good as western Europe, but in reality i think we have the highest living standard and i have to agree with some Arab prince who visited Slovenia saying its the worlds biggest Oasis.
I moved away from Slo when i was like 18-19 and i came back like 10 yrs later. your videos are helping me heal my relationship with Slovenia. I hope that makes sense xD Love your content
What I heard on a few occasions is that Slovenians, just like us Czechs, are pretty liberal, especially when it comes to nudity. People from more prudish countries seem to be shocked by the relaxed attitude we've got to what must be hidden... Is that correct? I personally have a funny story from Lago di Garda, where some people scolded me for changing into my swimming speedos behind the tent. There was pretty much nobody in sight and I was perfectly well obscured by the tent and some bushes... And yet, I apparently caused a minor uproar just because I bared my ass for a couple of seconds... Something that would not raise a single eyebrow on any Czech river bank or lake beach is apparently just utterly unacceptable for---of all nations!---Italians... :-)
Thanks so much Barbara! ❤ I believe THIS is the new standard work for visitors to Slovenia. Gratitude after seeing you for the first time! Cheers from Germany, Stefan
I definitely want to go. I know that I have cousins on both grandparents sides. I have studied the language and I am researching immigration records and birth certificates. It is a matter of money. I do not drink coffee so I might have a problem, but on the other hand I can eat an amazing amount of food at one sitting. Luckily I was raised by second generation immigrants who kept a lot of their Slovene ways. The personality thing is something that even goes for my family. We are all assumed to be upset or sad while we’re just enjoying a little quiet time inside our heads.
When 4yo I was in Liliana in a house of lady, who had a parrot. Parrot seat on my sholder and told me: "Daj lubiczku" (or how you spell it in Slovenian?) and I did. The bird painfully pecked my lip and I ended up crying.
You forgot to say that Slovenians regularly visit Croatian coast at summer time. Besides doing same outdoor sporting activities, they also do that on the sea.
This video was AMAZING! You are hilarious and your sarcasm and subtle innuendos are awesome, especially since English is not your native language (I think anyway). You have definately mastered the English language. I'm traveling to your country in about 6 weeks and am very excited. Thanks for this fantastic video.
I'm Irish and they are more like Finns than Irish. I've lived in Finland for 30 years Finns are the world's biggest consumers of coffee ☕ 10-14 cups per day Your never more than 20 meters from a Finnsh metal band Potatoes. Its not a meal without Potatoes Finns only open up after 3,4 hrs of alcohol consumption Communal saunas are normal but not mixed. Only idiots like actually learnt Finnish 85% of Finns can speak English better than native speakers but choose not to... Finns always look see life as half empty except when they beat Sweden at winter sports.
I would love to visit, but I will have to settle for some authentic potato recipes. By the way, I support potatoes as a standalone food! Thanks for all your advice...
Gee what a lovely looking place is Slovenia and the people sound amazing....and you do look slightly annoyed with a bit of depression, but that's not the case, you being the warm hearted funny person I know from your videos, which always give me a smile and a nice feeling. Now in Australia we speak in a very nasal way hardly opening our mouth because an open mouth means swallowing a fly, we are always waving our hands shewing flies away so much it's called the Australian salute....that's our national look and feel.
I loved this!! I'm American.. But my grandparents are from Slovenia they came here in there's 20s. Everything you said is so true! I laughed so hard..love it!
Živjo Barbara!!! 👋 Greetings from yet another Slovenian soul “lost” in a foreign land. I love your videos. They make me miss Slovenia ❤️ but they also make me laugh and I can only nod to what you’ve been saying. Really nice job!
My father was born and raised in Ljubljana, I would really like to see where he grew up. I saw pictures, But back then it was communist and he fled to Germany at 20, then to the USA. I'm in my 50's now so Slovenia is way different now. From what you are saying my Father would be surprised what happened to his home land. Makes me want to visit more.
Dear Barbara, You would be fantastic in a comedy movie, but not à la Steve Martin, Jim Carrey, Woody Allen, or other well known comedians, but one that would be one with your unique sense of humor that is unexpected, light, and cute as a two month pup. Your facial expressions is an incredible asset that would make you a Hollywood star in an instant! Please don't disappoint us...
I am a macedonian guy and I first visited Slovenia in 2017 it was so cool and definetly the cleanest country I have ever been with the most polite people.I fell in love with the country at first site.
I started watching you because of your energy and quirkiness, and now I watch to learn about Slovenia. Curses! Now I'm tricked into learning new things! LOL
I absolutely LOVED this video! My grandmother and her parents moved to Eveleth, MN from Logatec during World War I because my great-grandfather wanted to avoid conscription. It’s interesting to see how these facts have survived to this day in my family (we make potica for Christmas and Easter still following the original recipe they brought with them). One day I’d love to go back there to meet all the family that stayed there because it’s such a beautiful country and I think I’d fit right in because as these facts are SO true even here with my family in the US! Najlepša Hvala!
What you say is true, and I love every bit of Slovenia. Luckily, I speak Czech, so I was always able to get by and actually conduct tours for Americans. Slovenians love their Nation, and I do not blame them. After a 1000 years of foreign domination, every man from 16 to 70 went to defend their freedom in 1991. Roasted potatoes with goat cheese is fantastic.
holy crap Slovenia looks like a great place to go, the roast potatoes was the sealer, and I'm not taking the piss. it looks like an awesome place ..... very cool .
Pro tips yo. Slovenia was amazing the first time I went - to Tolminator a couple of months ago. I enjoyed the mentality of the people I met, not just at the festival but also in Tolmin town. I also went to Serbia last spring. It was also nice, but the level of smoke at bars and restaurants was mad. Slovenia seems to be a less extreme variant of the balkan smoking situation. I'm kind of fed up with Sweden and modern society to a degree. I recently got my tickets to visit Slovenia for the second time in a few weeks. Doing Ljubljana this time around. Going to investigate if Slovenia could/should be my future home. I'm thinking something like a homestead on the Slovenian countryside.
That was fun to listen to so thank you for that! I liked your spirit and genuine advice! We are in France and looking to moving to Slovenia although still figuring out logistics and so on. We would like to seek a life where there is no Starbucks in sight! Or anything of that nature in fact!
😅My Maternal Grandparents immigrated from Slovenia to Cleveland, My Grandfather’s Sister’s family immigrated to Kanada. I have many cousins in Kanada. My Mother & Father were part of the Rebel Clan that escaped to the Great Republic of Texas. So I’m one of the few Slovenes who live in the Republic of Texas. I have many fond memories of spending the summers in Cleveland with my Grandparents. I enjoyed the homemade Kelbasa made by my Uncle Beanie & Grandmother’s Strudel & Poticia. Slovenians are the nicest & warmest people on the planet. You will gain weight when around the Slovenes. The beer & wine we shared with family were the greatest.
Looks all totaly fine to me. In Switzerland we also have a roasted potato only dish, it's called "Rösti" and we even have different regional variants of it, e.g. with cheese on top. Another typical Swiss dish would be "Gschwelti", where the main characters are boiled potatoes, often served with pickels and melted slices of cheese. So, except for the language I would probably feel right at home.
2:19 "fun" fact: Manner Neapolitaner have their first written mention in a document from 1898. And back then the hazelnuts came from Napoli (Neapel in german). (At a time where slovenes would have considered the place these delicious things come from, as the main capitol of their country) From all the athletes you mentioned i only knew the two ski ladies. There are famous slovene ski jumpers too that you didn't mention but i don't remember their name. And you got one of biggest fmaous ski jumping hills too in Planica.
Love your videos, your sense of irony is brilliantly portrayed, comic timing to perfection. I am learning Slovenian, because yes, I fell in love when I visited. Every time I ordered a drink, meal, or asked directions, I tried my best to talk in Slovenian. People were really great about the way I butchered your language which is beautifully complicated. Not giving up! Learning 1st and 4th Sklon, love declensions, irregular verbs, etc. Have subscribed to your channel, keep the videos coming 🤗
I visited Slovenia myself once and can confirm that it is a beautiful country that has everything to offer, from mountains (including impressive caves and gorges) to the sea with wonderful sandy beaches. One thing that surprised me and wasn't mentioned in this video was that not only do a lot of people speak English, which is quite rare in an Eastern European country, but to my great surprise, a huge number of people also spoke German. And not just a little bit, but a really almost perfect German, the likes of which I have personally never experienced outside of the German-speaking area. By the way: unfortunately, this unexpected fact has deprived the Slovenians of the (in my case probably not so sweet) "accent" :-D I was really willing and prepared and, as always when I visit another country, I brought my little dictionary with me so that I could at least order a roll or a beer in the local language, but... Unfortunately, even these basics were too difficult for me, and the Slovenians in turn surprised me with their surprising language skills.
Great videos just learned my closest relative was from Slovenia Dolge Njive 600 BC. how awesome is that now I'm learning all i can. so now ill have to make a pilgrimage and thank those ancestors.
@rajjzen, you should not only 'think' that Slovenians and Slovaks are similar; they are the same people, speaking different dialects. Many of the towns in both countries have the same names. Lately, many Slovak programs have been popping up on my UA-cam channel. I have to read the headlines several times to determine whether I am dealing with a Slovak or Slovenian program. (Greetings - living in Canada since 1952).
Nice job! I’m a huge cycling fan and watching Tadej win the Giro got me thinking about a cycling vacation. He seems like such a great guy. Your video reinforced that although I was fooled into worrying about what you were going to present initially. Thanks for your advice. I am definitely going to plan a trip!
Barbara Horvat. You are very entertaing, and I had many good laughs watching this video. Going back for my 4th trip in 1,5 years. Tandem paragliding from Vogel and been bitten by a dog in Ratece (self inflicted ) :-) :-) Hvala lepa

You have just described every visit I have ever had in Southern Ukraine - tell your friends to never empty a plate of food, because if you do a grandmother will immmediately fill it to overflowing.
My family participates in the roasted potatoes festival, it breaks our hearts when people throw away the dish right at our stand, at least walk out of sight to another if you don't like out stands potatoes. There are many stands with different recopies and it saves our feelings!
Vsekakor vam želim veliko krompirja v vsakem pomenu besede 😊.

And you're making a convincing argument to go visit indeed. I've been following your volleyball team at the moment who are killing it in the vnl even with Rok Možič injured
#7 Can confirm! I went to Metaldays in 2017, and it was glorious! 30 plus celsius outside, and the rivers at the festival site average 8 degrees and 3 degrees celsius respectively. Taking the plunge is initially like puberty in reverse with the sudden shock... There were many inflatable unicorns, swans and other things. We had a (Rock, or in this case Metal) lobster 😃
4:01 I'm reminded of the Lucky Luke recipe of coffee. Take a pound of coffee. Add a few drops of water. Boil for half an hour. Add a horseshoe. If the horseshoe doesn't float, add _more_ coffee.
I visited Ljubljana a few years ago and the thing that shocked me was the amount of people who speak Spanish fluently, beautiful and clear and every time I asked where they learned it they would reply "Esmeralda" 😅... Slovenia is beautiful and so are its people

OH MY GOSH, that's so sweet. I gotta recommend "applause button" to UA-cam 😂
@@TheBarbaraHorvat👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Omg I started watching you because I wanted to learn more about my heritage! Oh you deliver and soooo much more! Thank you! My grandparents came here from Slovenia and today you explained so much lol! People think I’m Italian cus I’m always cooking and feeding them! Lol! We enjoy our beverages lol now I know it’s in my blood😂
Come wisit SLOVENIJA ❤️
Hello! Very pleasant and funny presentation of Slovenia,a country I hope to visit in the near future
I was blown away our Slowenian waiter actually spoke german AND Austrian.😅 (He demonstrated it) you are a very multilingual nation.
My wife from Medvode speaks 7 languages and son 16 years old speaks 5
Austrians speak German, there's no austrian language.
@@aldxpachecovillalon132 i know that, since i‘m german. He could pull off a Perfect Austrian dialect (including vocab That’s only used in Austria) as well as perfect standard „Hochdeutsch“
Hey Barbara! I love your humour! My parents are from Primorska. I can’t wait to visit my relatives again. 😊
Greetinga from Poland Barbara!
I've never been to Slovenia but your description of homeland makes me wanna visit fellow slavic country.
Maybe a honeymoon trip in near future :)
Some thoughts about expression on Your face and tone of voice:
We have literally the same situation in Poland ;D Everybody I pass by on the street has a depressed look by Western standards.
My friend's and I always called this campfire coffee because we make it this way when hunting in the mountains
you are an inspiration for all American men
Poz iz Rhode Islanda!
Živjo Barbara! Kmalu se selim v Slovenijo. Slovenia is a wonderful country, every time I go there I am totally fascinated by nature.
Is the village Selšček? Cause that’s where my family is from and I’ve been told there’s witches around 😂
100% true. The witches gather at the top of mount Slivnica. Been there. It’s very magical.
People of Slovenië are not only friendly but well educated , polite and modest too. I go to Austria and Slovenia this summer. Thank you for the nice video 👍🤗
You can go to avstria in Vintar you will be soooooo happpy

Hungary is just as good
I moved away from Slo when i was like 18-19 and i came back like 10 yrs later. your videos are helping me heal my relationship with Slovenia.
Italians, Spaniards and others still have the Catholic prudery in them unlike those affected by Socialist or Capitalist mores.
Thanks so much Barbara! ❤
I believe THIS is the new standard work for visitors to Slovenia.
Love your sense of humor, thanks for making my day a little brighter!!
Oh boy,i have a 3 month work trip to slovenia(then again im croatian so not too far) coming up,that landscape is gonna be a joy to explore!
We've spent over 20 holidays in Slovenia. I fel in love at first sight and it still continues. With love from Czechia.
You forgot to say that Slovenians regularly visit Croatian coast at summer time. Besides doing same outdoor sporting activities, they also do that on the sea.
If only I could. Sounds like a good time. Imagine actually meeting the humans responsible for Barbara's presence on this planet.
One day you might!!
You dont want to meet her father ;)
This video was AMAZING! You are hilarious and your sarcasm and subtle innuendos are awesome, especially since English is not your native language (I think anyway). You have definately mastered the English language. I'm traveling to your country in about 6 weeks and am very excited. Thanks for this fantastic video.
Slovenia and its people sound a lot like Ireland and the Irish.
Except for the part about Olympic medals ...
Greetings from Cork!
True that. I was thinking the same thing.
I'm Irish and they are more like Finns than Irish. I've lived in Finland for 30 years
Finns are the world's biggest consumers of coffee ☕ 10-14 cups per day
Your never more than 20 meters from a Finnsh metal band
Potatoes. Its not a meal without Potatoes
Finns only open up after 3,4 hrs of alcohol consumption
Communal saunas are normal but not mixed.
Only idiots like actually learnt Finnish 85% of Finns can speak English better than native speakers but choose not to...
Finns always look see life as half empty except when they beat Sweden at winter sports.
Slovenia is a mixed culture of German/Austrian/Hungarian/Croatian & Italian. What is there Irish for you?
Slovenians have been here since prehistoric times. We’ve had other cultures in other times.
@@tonianzlovar7590 Most Slovenians are Hungarians, Croats & other Slaws.
I would love to visit, but I will have to settle for some authentic potato recipes. By the way, I support potatoes as a standalone food! Thanks for all your advice...
Let me know if you follow the official recipe!
In a Slovenian town Šenčur there is also a monument dedicated to a potato.
@@TheBarbaraHorvatcan i get to know you you beautiful?
Gee what a lovely looking place is Slovenia and the people sound amazing....and you do look slightly annoyed with a bit of depression, but that's not the case, you being the warm hearted funny person I know from your videos, which always give me a smile and a nice feeling. Now in Australia we speak in a very nasal way hardly opening our mouth because an open mouth means swallowing a fly, we are always waving our hands shewing flies away so much it's called the Australian salute....that's our national look and feel.
If you don't have a fatal heart attack after drinking your coffee, then it wasn't Slovenian.
I was trying to figure out how I found your channel. You were touring the USA when I signed up. So I guess it’s my turn to come to your country.
11:45 Does it count that I visited Graz in 1986?
Yes, I know, there is a frontier, but Steiermark has two languages ...
Gave my brother a coffee percolator.
In just four days he turned one serving of grounds into a heart attack in easy to swallow liquid form.
Punk Rock Holiday
? Some of those guys are my age. Old.
I wondered where they had gone to.
XD
Jedino što ne volim kod odlaska u Sloveniju je što moram da vozim 4h kroz Hrvatsku. Bilo bi mnogo lakše da ste bliže. 😆
What you say is true, and I love every bit of Slovenia. Luckily, I speak Czech, so I was
always able to get by and actually conduct tours for Americans. Slovenians love their
Nation, and I do not blame them. After a 1000 years of foreign domination, every
man from 16 to 70 went to defend their freedom in 1991. Roasted potatoes with
goat cheese is fantastic.
holy crap Slovenia looks like a great place to go, the roast potatoes was the sealer, and I'm not taking the piss. it looks like an awesome place ..... very cool .
roasted potatoes are lifeeeeee
Thanks for the warnings.
Sounds like I will be planning a visit on my next trip to Europe.
Your homeland is definitely on my bucket list Barb. The landscapes look so beautiful. Ansell Adams would’ve loved it there ❤
Punk rock, you say?! I now have a life goal: attend Punk Rock Holiday in Slovenia!!
LOL…. This is great! Loved it! So accurate
2:19 "fun" fact: Manner Neapolitaner have their first written mention in a document from 1898.
And back then the hazelnuts came from Napoli (Neapel in german).
(At a time where slovenes would have considered the place these delicious things come from, as the main capitol of their country)
From all the athletes you mentioned i only knew the two ski ladies.
Just have to say- this one had me laughing, always appreciate ypur creativity, but this was you on the top of your game. Loved it.
Very excited for two weeks of bikepacking through your country starting in the next few days.
Greetings from Slovakia :) . I watched the whole video and i think we are very similar nations.
Yea , actually you are. Both of you are ethnic Croats !
Absolute love Slovenia )so far :-) ) I go to Radovljica, which has been my base earlier. this weekend rgere is a chocolate festival. i have been to Kranska Gora, Planica, Bled, Bohinj, Lesce, Brezje, Jesenice, Mojstrana, Zelesniki, Kropa, Skofja Loka to mention some. Tandem paragliding from Vogel and been bitten by a dog in Ratece (self inflicted ) :-) :-) Hvala lepa
Everytime I go there for a day I feel like I could find a wife there I could live there , everybody is pretty nice and welcoming. Alright now I’ll watch the rest of your video just wanted to comment before I start
Barbara! Tell me something that I don't already know: I've been married to my Slovenian husband for 50 years! Love, love, love your view of the world! Born and raised in New York City... Somehow we made it work! (Am I using too many exclamation points?!). We watch your videos together and you make us laugh! Thank you!!
Roast potatoes, leftovers, coffee and amazing landscapes, on board for all that. Sounds great being Slovenian.
Love your videos Barbs, especially your sarcastic humour which i can relate too. Thank you for doing such a good publicity for our country... Like that we need even more crowd around Bled and Bohinj lake 🙄. Anyway, proud of you and keep up the great work. Oh yeah, 'support local'... Awesome mantra 👍.
Great humour (and info)
Slovenians bordered my heart ❤ You have a beautiful country ❤ Love the fact you do not have Starbucks 🎉
Vsekakor vam želim veliko krompirja v vsakem pomenu besede 😊.
you're hilarious!! thank you for this!
Welp...I already went there so it's a bit late for that haha. I had a fantastic time, love the country.
I love Slovenia, so many nice people and i half-understand slovenian❤
Nice?? Potem me še nisi srečal!! 🤪
Very informative.....and you make me laugh. Thank's Barbara.....i'm hoping to visit your country this year. David.
It's almost as if you're talking about Croatia. The only difference is that you're calmer than us and we don't like cold water 😊
I'm going back to europe next summer and always been intrigued by slovenia...especially since I learned about that park with the beer fontains. And you're making a convincing argument to go visit indeed. I've been following your volleyball team at the moment who are killing it in the vnl even with Rok Možič injured
As always love your informative, amusing video. Your manner is so engaging, I'd probably watch you read the back of a cereal box. 2 thumbs up
Slovenia State sponsored tourism websites should have a link to this video. Damn, Barb made me laugh, she made me cry, she made me check flight times.
Best ambassador around…. Just gotta love this lady and her vids!
Great post! Added to my must visit list!
