apologies for the obnoxious red lighting! it was an experiment gone wrong. i filmed this back in september of 2018 as i began prep for this new ~era~ of videos, hence why there's not an updated intro or outro lol. regardless, i hope you guys enjoy this! it took f o r e v e r, but it was fun!

I quite liked the red light. It wasn't harsh, but felt warm and inviting and gave it a noir-ish feel. I would be here for that red lighting as a recurring feature on this channel, if not a starring feature.

Artist tip: when using tape on paper, even if it's washi(decorating paper tape) stick the length of tape to your jeans first to remove some stickiness. This reduces the chance of tearing the art paper surface. Also good on you for mixing your colors. By using the same hues you already worked with, you created consistency in you project!

Idk how Jesse did it, but you could probably do it with split screen. He'd film himself talking, and then make sure the camera is in the exact same spot and place the books one by one, then edit it together, and then edit both clips together, one on the right and one on the left, and make sure there's no line, and it looks like it's all one frame.

One thing to note is that metallic paints typically are thinner than your average acrylic, so that’s probably why you had issues separating the yellow pages. It looked like you were applying a lot of paint all at once to get even coverage, rather than a few thin coats. Not an issue, as it still worked out, but just something to think about if you ever changed your mind and did this again

  • @piscesgaming869
    @piscesgaming869 5 років тому +42

Artist tip if you want to do this again, or anyone else.
    SWATCHES, SWATCHES, SWATCHES
ANY art supplies you use for art you must swatch it, especially paint. If it's student or cheap paint it will not look like the packaging, especially once it dries. Swatches are your friend.
Especially with yellow cause that is a really hard color, especially to find a good one. Their usually transparent or really bright like that.
And be careful what paper you use, paint can cause the paper to lift and do this buckling, so this should be great to use on thick paper in books and not that really thin pages I sometimes see, that will just ruin it.
But this is really cool, I never knew you could do this so thank you for sharing this, Jesse!

I've done DIY sprayed edges a lot! Painting them doesn't take me very long, but separating the pages takes a while. I've done lots of different colors and they all have turned out very well. I think for people wanting to try this, use a book you don't care too much about to start out, that way if it gets destroyed, it's not a big deal. Also, while you can do paperback books, I have found that hardcover is easier. Also, keep in mind, you don't want to use that much paint because it'll be harder to separate the pages at the end. I think yours turned out great though!

I just started trying to do this this very week. Your thoughts at the end are really helpful! Like you, I started out by practicing on books I had multiple copies of and such. I found that it helped to do the first layer of paint very thin, let it dry completely and then doing a second layer to cover the holes, since it didn’t get the pages as wet as one thick layer would 🎨

When you use tape for things like protecting the covers, you should "de-tack" the tape by sticking it on fabric and ripping it off a few times. This reduces the stickiness just enough to be able to stay in place while still removing smoothly. :) Also, the metallic paint has shimmer particles in it that probably are what made it easier to separate the pages afterward, it was already more separated consistency if that makes sense. lol.

Never done this before, but would like to in the future, so here's some tips I've picked up that I would recommend for anyone wanting to try this:
    1) Don't stop with painter's tape. Trim a piece of regular printer paper (or whatever you have on hand) to protect the ENTIRE cover. This will provide extra protection to help make sure little splatters don't ruin the cover (something Jesse would've had if he hadn't noticed the splatter immediately and carefully wiped the paint off)
    2) Weight is super-important, as it keeps the paint from seeping into the pages and looking awful (we're trying to paint the paper side of the book block, not the edges of all the pages). You can use clamps, a heavy weight as shown in the video, or a book press. I've seen someone use a heavy cookbook and a weight. Make sure to keep the weight on the book while the first layer of paint dries or the paint may have time to seep into the pages, which could lead to warping and goopy spots on the pages
    3) If you're mixing colors, ditch the red and blue and replace them with magenta and cyan. This is a very common amateur artist mistake. Using red, yellow, and blue as your primary colors in paint mixing will yield some muddy colors. Your colors will be much cleaner and brighter if you use the real primaries (magenta, yellow, and cyan). Think of printer ink if you're having trouble picturing the colors.
    4) Use opaque paint. If it's transparent then you're going to end up needing to paint a lot more layers. When it comes to painting the edges of the book block, the fewer layers, the better. For this reason you may want to use a sponge applicator like Jesse used for the red paint. If the paint starts building up, dab at it with a paper towel.
    5) Wipe off any dust that may be on the pages before you start. Just use a regular tissue or dust cloth. Nothing fancy needed.
    6) Make some paint swatches. Get a piece of paper, swipe a little bit of the paints you plan to use on them, wait for them to dry, and see how they look. A little extra? Yes. Worth it to make sure your books won't look horrible with no way to reverse or fix it? Absolutely.
    7) After you've waited for the paint to completely dry, bend sections of the book block back and forth to help break up the pages, because they will stick.
Hope this helps anyone who wants to do this!

  • @Sarah-tm2fz

11:38 I paint the edges of my paperbacks and they always turn out pretty good! I don't do the whole tape thing because I know they can ruin my books so I actually take 2 pieces of copy paper and stick them in the front & back of the book. I then fold the excess paper over (I don't cut them to size so I can reuse them for different sized books!) and make sure the cover edges are covered. Just like in this video, I do recommend using a weight to hold the books down so that way the papers don't shift and cause paint to get into the book. As for the actual painting process, I use quick dry acrylic paint & paint ONE SIDE at a time. After I paint one side, I flip through the pages and allow the paint to dry as I'm flipping so I can try to not have many pages that need to be separated! Once that side is dry, paint the next side and then repeat the drying & flipping process. Once all sides are done, you can then go through and see if there are any pages that do need separating. If pages need to be separated, I recommend using a mail/letter opener (not the kind with blades, though).

Just some tips from a seasoned crafter if anyone else is considering doing this! Put the painters tape on your jeans /shirt first that way it's stickiness is dulled and it won't take any paper with it when you peel it off, and when painting the edges make sure to use thin coats (no globs of paint!) that will make the drying time quicker. You could also tape paper over the covers to really protect every inch of the book from unwanted paint stains.

i'd never have the guts to do something like this. yOU'RE SO BRAVE JESSE also i appreciate the effort to try out new lighting! it doesn't look bad tbh! it just doesn't feel like it fits the "aesthetic"/mood for this kinda video. looking forward to your other videos with experimental editing!

If you did want to do paperbacks again, I would recommend cutting paper to the size of the cover and sticking them together to make a cover. That way you don't damage the book with masking tape. Apart from that, good job! The books look really cool

If you mix any basic color with silver, it makes that color metallic!
