"Please check your egos at the door." Prince was asked to participate by Lionel Ritchie. Prince asked if he could perform in a separate room, which Lionel couldn't do. Lionel Richie's voice like butter... This was truly a masterpiece, all of these spectacular people showed up only a few minutes to go over the script and get their turn and tune. Micheal left and recorded his voice later. No one understands why he left, some say it was due to a spat. I can name them all... learn their names and listen to their music. 💜🙌🏽

You are 100% correct when you say "the world stopped and listened". I was 20 years old in 1985 and an exchange student from England. A friend of mine and I were at a McDonalds in New York City, and we met a Canadian couple who had to go back to Toronto the next day. So they gave us a couple of tickets to the "Live Aid" concert at the JFK Stadium in Philadelphia, PA, which was taking place in a few days. My friend and I were not just appreciative, but blown away!!
We took the Greyhound bus a couple of days later to Philly. I still remember the date: July 13th, 1985 (don't remember the day though). The JFK Stadium held around 100,000 people (it was demolished in 1992). When we got there, it was packed! They let us in the gates at around 5pm Eastern time. As the stadium was filling up, we could see the concert at Wembley Stadium in England on the big screen. It was amazing!! Freddie Mercury and Queen, Sir Elton John, Phil Collins and many more on the screen "live" from London.
After about 4 hours, Sir Bob Geldof came on the screen and said "thank you Wembley, we now hand it over to Philadelphia, thank you!". And then before we knew it Lionel Richie stepped onto the stage, and all 100,000 of us went nuts!
The highlight of the performances at the JFK Stadium, had to be Phil Collins - hands down. He was at Wembley Stadium, and performed "One more Night". So we saw him on the big screen. But unbeknown to us, he got on the supersonic "Concorde" plane, and flew to NYC (in 3 hours from London), and caught a private jet to Philly to be with us live. When he appeared on stage, most of us thought he was a "body double", as we had just seen him on the screen in London, 4 hours ago! It took us a couple of minutes to realize it was him on stage in front of us! He also mentioned he had a great flight on the Concorde. That's when we "got it" and believed. He played "In the Air Tonight". It was amazing, and an evening I will never forget. One of those moments, where the event was truly "lightning in a bottle".
Lastly, a big thank you to Harry Belafonte and music manager Ken Kragen (RIP) who got all those artists (on the American side), for the "We Are The World" recording, and the Live Aid simulcast on July 13th, 1985 at the JFK Stadium. I am glad to have been a witness to musical history!
Thanks for reading my post. Enjoy!
      Cheers, Sam.

The message in this song is VERY timely right now. Seriously, ya'll, there's a lot us "boomers" don't get (like the latest cell phone or wireless ear buds) but we DID get some of the more important things we worked hard for since we were young: and that is that people need to work at getting along. There is no "agenda" here. It's just deciding to get along. No giving up of anyone's ideas, popular or not popular, you just love people, man! So glad you guys did this one.

After nearly 4 decades this song still brings me to tears. It was such a labor of love, but more than that it was SUCH an important project. In the mid-1980s a terrible famine was ravaging Ethiopia and people were dying by the thousands. By the time it finally ended over a million people had died. Those images, especially the ones of the sick and emaciated children, have never left me. It was absolutely heartbreaking. This project raised over $60 million for famine relief and this song is still earning money. I doubt we will ever see a collaboration of this magnitude again and I’m glad I was alive for it.

When Quincy Jones invited all those mega super star musical artists to participate in making this recording for a good cause, he specifically noted in the invitation "check your egos at the door". One superstar who was invited at the time failed to participate was Prince, because of a selfish personal reason. Another superstar who did not participate was Madonna, who would have a conflict with her scheduled concert date at the time of the recording session. Can you imagine what further impact on the recording should both Prince and Madonna contributed?

This was special. They did it after an award show and stayed all night to get it done. You won’t see the most talented voices from all eras come together. It was beautiful. One more thing is this doesn’t get done without Michael and Quincey they both were top in the business with that much influence and pull.

"We Are the World" was recorded 30 years ago today in 1985. The single was created and written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie and sold more than 20 million copies for charity. The album later won three Grammys and raised more than $60 million for work in Africa and the states. Jan 28, 2015

I may feel old, but was blessed to be a teen in the 80’s. I knew them all. Little tidbit about me. I live in Valparaiso, Indiana and was born in Gary just like the Jackson’s. My dad and Joe Jackson both worked at Gary Steel. May they RIP.

Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson wrote the song but Quincy Jones brought it all together. They recorded this after the AMA’s after midnight into early morning till like 8am. Quincy put a sign “check your egos at the door” and All these great artists just made it happen. They skipped the after parties at the AMA’s to do this. Stevie Wonderful and the Boss were asked back after 8am to re-record their duet at the ending when everyone else went home. Everyone had limos and bodyguards the Boss Bruce Springsteen showed up in a pickup truck he drove himself!❤

It was Harry Belafonte's idea; he wanted to raise money for the victims of the famine in Ethiopia in 1984-1985. He commissioned Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson to write the song and the producer Ken Collar to do everything else... without Harry Belafonte this song wouldn't exist...Harry Belafonte Singer, actor, producer and civil rights activist... A hero in so many ways!!!! ...Rip Harry Belafonte.

They recorded this after the American Music Awards, so all of the talent was in Hollywood that night. They went to the studio in L.A. (Capitol or AnM, I cant remember?) and knocked it out in FIVE hours. It was Michaels idea and he was inspired by the UK song collab.
He called Lionel Ritchie and they met at some restaurant , and thats where the actual documentary picks up. Michael already had most of the lyrics written when they got together. And then they called Stevie Wonder and met with him and he called Quincy Jones and thats how it all started.
His Purpleness was invited, but declined, reasons unknown.
The documentary on here about it is very good and just under an hour long.
    Peace!
