    NASA JPL's RoboSimian robot stood out at the DARPA Robotics Challenge as one of the few non-humanoid designs. The use of four versatile limbs allows it to adapt to the test scenario in ways that would be difficult for a bipedal robot. We chat with Katie Byl of the UC Santa Barbara Robotics Lab, whose team programmed RoboSimian, to learn about the advantages of a quadruped design and how RoboSimian may be utilized in complex environments like being underground or even in space!

Norm always shows his passion for not just subjects he already knows about, he clearly loves learning more about those he's perhaps less well versed on.

    3:20 is really interesting. The leg actually scrapes against the blocks while it takes a rather odd trajectory. I can't help wonder whether that collision was planned and accounted for, or whether it was just lucky that it didn't destabilize the robot.

  • @CorneliusSneedley
    @CorneliusSneedley 9 років тому +7

    A good example of thinking "outside the box," but nothing about this seems "ape-like" to me. It's more like a spider that is missing half its legs.
    Regarding over-torquing the fingers and breaking them, it seems to me that a simple solution can be found on a lot of drill motors, where you have a simple clutch mechanism that releases at a given torque setting. Then it would just be a matter of recalibrating for zero rotation, which should be quite easy.

    • @freedomfighter0011
      @freedomfighter0011 6 років тому +2

      Thats not really the issue. You can easily downgrade the strength or add a clutch (good idea), it's the robots ability to know when to use say,a small force to open a door handle, or alot of force to rip open a jammed car door or something similar. Thats the A.I. part that's hard to programme as its a very human feature.

    I love the wheels. Limbs are great for certain situations but pretty inefficient for flat ground.
    I didn't notice her voice at all, the robot was too awesome and she did a really good job of talking about it. Going back and listening again, it sounds like she was probably straining her voice to be louder over the crowd noise.

    the situation with the door handle could be solved with a spill valve which doesn't allow it to pass max torque that triggers an error message. you could trigger a push pull on the door to test if it would open at that point,

    This design could have some real practical applications in some areas. I am imagining it on a much larger scale handling some heavy duty work with implements each limb. Its ability to handle uneven terrain is huge. It is not practical for any general consumer application that I can see. Very cool regardless.
