  • This realistic robot arm and hand was one of the coolest things we saw at the DARPA Robotics Challenge event--it's a technology that's already being field tested on patients. We chat with Michael McLoughlin, Chief Engineer at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab to learn more about the challenges of building a modular prosthetic limb that has the same dexterity as a human hand, and its potential applications.
    Find out more about the Modular Prosthetic Limb at www.jhuapl.edu/...

    Very natural and stable design. It's really impressive. The control method is something to be concerned, though, but some amazing research has already decoded that too to the most natural level of control. The following years will sure be amazing.

    if its humanlike, can the ringfinger be extended from a fist like the middlefinger can? or does it behave like a human hand via programming, ie. limiting its movement.
    if i were to have such an arm, i would not necessarily want to have an exact analog of the arm i have now. i could have anything i wanted to imagine, make a fist backwards, have a lighter in my indexfinger or all sorts of other crazy stuff... two thumbs opposing each other on each side of the hand? why create an exact replica if i may think or want something completely different potentially better?

    So with the chip that's implanted into the brain, what would happen if said person had a seizure? Would the robotic arm also react? My understanding is that the brain itself remains fine, it can't communicate to the body, so because this thing is tapping straight into the brain, wouldn't that mean that they could still control the arm? Really interested in this.

    cool, but likely very expensive with custom BLDC motors.
    so, possible design using stepper motors (fairly common / affordable):
    fingers, 6x NEMA-14;
    wrist, 2x NEMA-17;
    curl/shoulder, 3x NEMA-23.
    weight: approx 6 lbs (for motors, for 5-fingers)
    ( leaving out most intermediate calculations, etc... ).
    strength:
    approx 35lbs grip (with a 1s open/close time);
    approx 50lbs wrist turn/deflection (2s);
    approx 40lbs curl and lift strength (4s over full range).
    cost: approx $187 for motors for 5 fingers, approx $175 for 4 fingers.
    cost would be lower if motors are bought at bulk prices (approx $130 for the motors).
    other materials, probably would need a frame for the arm (likely plastic and/or aluminum), and likely some pulleys and thin steel cable (these motors would not fit in the joints, so would need to work via pulleys).
    power required: probably around 200W peak (all motors going at the same time at full power, assuming motors running at 12v at rated values).
    or such...

    • @TowerCrisis
      @TowerCrisis 9 років тому

      Brendan Bohannon Yeah, i'm assuming you can also get a TON more power out of a stepper too.

    • @BGBTech
      @BGBTech 9 років тому

      ***** vs BLDC? overall wattage vs size and weight is likely fairly comparable (it mostly has to do with heat), and these aren't particularly large steppers (the finger steppers are more like what would be found in a printer, and the larger ones are more like what would be found in a bench-top CNC).
      typically, BLDC motors are designed for high-RPM low-torque (so are "weak" in this sense), whereas steppers are typically designed for lower-RPM high torque (so, they turn a lot harder but tend to be slower).
      commodity steppers mostly are likely to be a fair bit cheaper than custom-made high-torque BLDC motors.
      ultimately, how quickly and with how much power a load can be moved comes down to wattage. more watts means more power.
      some of the larger motors listed could peak about 100W, or about 1/8 HP, so probably pretty good. rated power is closer to about 36W though (generally, the area between rated and peak is ok for short bursts, but above rated the motors will get very hot).
      of course, a lot of watts also means needing a good power-source, so this would need some fairly powerful batteries (random thought of someone sticking in multiple cordless power-tool batteries).

    • @TowerCrisis
      @TowerCrisis 9 років тому

      Brendan Bohannon Haha, I appreciate the great explanation but I don't really need it (I do a lot of robotics). But yeah, I guess i'm just influenced by cnc steppers and over estimate steppers in general. We take a lot of caution around cncs, there's too many stories of people having their hands crushed.

    • @BGBTech
      @BGBTech 9 років тому

      ***** yeah. big steppers are pretty powerful, and can easily do some damage. little ones are not quite as powerful, and most of the types I had listed are not all that big.

    Goddamn guys hold your horses this is still a WIP. There are many other sensors there that we haven't mapped out or have functionality to, those being: proprioceptors and nociceptors (including thermoreceptors). Despite having motor functionality down like it ain't no thang, the sensory stuff needs some work. We still have the problem of phantom limpane, plus the person can't tell how their arm is oriented if they don't look at it. Once we have both of those sensory modalities communicating with the PNS (or CNS via microelectrode patch) then we gotta figure out how to prevent the immune response and glial scarring from occuring, otherwise the patient has to either get multiple surgeries over their lifespan or have to deal with always having a weak immune system. Once that is done the next step is figuring out portable power. It may seem simple the way this arm was presented in this video but goddamn it's a huge complicated project but major leaps were made in the field of robotic prosthetics thanks to APL's work.

    This is cool. and with it being compact, it will eventually be applicable.
    But I believe the real breakthrough (and possible Nobel Prize winner) is going to be with the interface between Brain and prosthetic. If one can find a way to directly translate neuron firings to mechanical-electronic binary instructions and vice versa, in a near 1-to-1 performance (minimal lag) then we could be in the age of Deus Ex (video game) by then. Hopefully it comes within our lifetimes.

      surft direct nervous tissue connection has already been done, and the brain implant option the guy was talking about involves implanting a silicon chip into the parts of your brain associated with movement. so yea already done.
      that's not to say the the chip is the best way. its actually 15 years old and the brain develops calluses over time, reducing its effectiveness. newer designs include a very promising silicon dust that will capture a more accurate picture as well as not suffering the degradation.
