That Tasha fluff was heartbreaking to watch. The way her mother talked about her and how she talked about herself. Not to mention that NBC thought it was okay to broadcast that on national television? I’ll never understand why peoples personal struggles are used to make tv.
A lot of NBC's fluff has not aged well unfortunately. (And Andrea Joyce has needed sensitivity training for many years; if she doesn't find an incredibly tone deaf question to ask at every televised meet, it's probably because she wasn't there!) They don't have a great track record with this.
I saw that piece as very abusive!!! What’s the reason to do gymnastics if you’re not going to give 100 percent??? Uh maybe to have fun???? Maybe she’s been training 40 hours a week for 13 years and she wants to relax and have a life??
Yeah, what a bunch of crap. Her mother comes across as bona fide trailor trash, shades of Tonya Harding's old lady. Tasha was superhuman considering what she came from. It's the same BS they spouted about poor Kristi Phillips in 1988. Poor kid didn't stand a chance.
Such a great quad. So many great gymnasts and also the broadcast was better in terms of showing many more routines. I was actually surprised how many they showed instead of spending 5 minutes watching gymnasts prepare for the next rotation or wait for their scores.
Her story was amazing when you think about it. She kinda came out of nowhere here. Gotta give her credit for the self-belief when she was off everyone's radar, and had her best results at 25!
Tired of internet trollers and the removal of the music. Let us watch old videos like this without removing the music. The floor exercise music is so important and any artist should be flattered their music was used so other people in a different format can hear it and appreciate it. I’m tired of videos on UA-cam being flagged because of music. If the music isn’t being illegally obtained then what harm is it to hear it on UA-cam videos?
@@mht4908 Yeah, I agree! Hollie would have been a great selection because she’s an awesome gymnast too. Both Liz and Hollie are beasts! If I was in the committee, I would have pick both girls, especially Liz!!
@@ljcovey5266 Yeah I agree. Carly and Liz are awesome too! But I know how tough the selections are for the Olympics every year. Both girls are incredible though! Merry Christmas!😊😍😍😘💍👊🏾🎄
I grew up in the 80s and 90s. We all knew the Károlyis were abusive. *Decades ago.* Watching videos like this, where they glorify the abuse of girls - where they actually show girls in tears while they train - and they say it's great? The way the world now acts like it's a surprise it happened disgusts me.
And they credit Karoly with all the success, instead of the gymnasts themselves and all the other coaches who were as influential as Karolyi. I don't think it can be over stated what part NBC played in the narrative, and in how much the narrative drove the reality.
@@carolynrabbani6469 yesss I agree. It pisses me off hearing the commentators constantly say, "they need to impress Marta if they want to make the team" or always bragging on how "great" the karolys are. It's honestly a bit painful to watch gymnastics sometimes because there's no telling how many of these girls were abused by the karolys and that monster nassar. I grew up with modern gymnastics but I love watching old routines and it's painful to see these girls compete with so many injuries too
I still get goosebumps whenever I see Kerry Strugg land that vault for the team. Talk about intense pressure...AND on an injury no less! The girl’s got so much heart! Don’t sleep on “lil squeaky” Big stuff comes in small packages! ❤️
The part on Tasha’s personal life… weird and cringey, who green-lit that and was like “yeah let’s broadcast this” ?! And the comments Al would make here and in all of the other competitions this same year… weird AF 🥴
All these gymnasts were fantastic and the FORM was impeccable! That Tasha fluff is cringeworthy though. It's sad that NBC thought it was appropriate to portray her so negatively on national TV.
I agree but even the way her mother spoke about her like why would you even say that about your child like that’s her daughter and she getting on national tv and saying well they don’t even need her like that’s so wrong
Sonya Heaney If you’re taught poor technique like most of the Russian’s are with Amanar’s. They screw them into the ground. I’ve yet to seen one Russian gymnast who completes the twist in preparation for landing. They seem like they land and carry on turning.
@@mht4908really not. In this latest quad not a single Amanar has been performed yet by any elite gymnast around the world but several Chengs thrown. So Amanar is as difficult as ever.
@@deepeshmathuria It could also be because the difference between an extra 1/2 twist for the yurchenko families in the 2017-21 quad was only 0.4 instead of 0.5-0.7 in past quads, that means that for most non-vault specialists, they're better off doing a clean DTY instead of trying to land an Amanar and have it being messy. Of course, what you suggested is valid as well
This is an old video, but man, this is gross. It's obvious that the announcers knew who was going regardless of performance (listen to them talk about Allyse Ishino vs Courtney Kupets in the first round, despite similar routines and similar mistakes). None of this was necessary. They just hazed these kids.
Even though this was like a national championship but with the gymnasts' skill level it feels like this competition is already the olympics. Just like in nba when the top two teams faced each other in the semis or the conference finals, we can say that its already the nba finals. Lol
Yes. From what I remember, the ones in these trials who later came out publicly were Tasha Schwikert and Terin Humphrey. Unfortunately, they probably weren't the only ones.
I'm sorry. Everyone says marta and bela abused the girls. Whatever. If that happened, I blame the parents. I fault them for putting up with it. That is what I find disgusting. If these children were injured, it was the parents job, to but let them compete. That's the job of a parent.
The thing is a lot of parents didn’t know their kids were injured many of the victims have come out said parents had no clue some injuries were hidden especially in cases where they thought they needed that athlete
At least they didn't quit on their team cuz she wasn't being scored like she thought she deserved. I'd rather someone choke instead of quit. Nowadays if you quit on your team you're called the "gost" 🙄
It is possible, and it interesting to wonder how difficult it was for the black gymnasts in the sport who were contenders before Simone Biles. However as someone who followed the sport closely at the time she definitely was a rebel figure in her later years. Even her Mom spoke about it and complained about, as well as her coach who was sort of a second motherly figure. I don't think that aspect was based on race but more reality. Her mother called her the Charles Barkley of gymnastics.
@Nunovurbznzsodontask Yes, and when you look at Gabby Douglas and Simone Biles both are adored and worshipped and in Douglas's case probably overscored at times. I don't think there was racism involved, except in Dawes and her being underscored at times in comparision to the white as snow Shannon Miller, but that is it. Tasha just had a crummy attitude in 2003 and 2004, and gave up almost, before finally deciding to really give it a go for the Olympics. I do think she should have still made the team but she wasn't left off due to racism but stupid Marta's ridiculous insistence on having 2 vault specialists who could only do double yurchenkos anyway rather than focusing on other events too. Plus the overhyped flop that was Courtney McCool.
@@robdurdain5912 I agree, I don't think it was racism either but they definitely did her dirty with that vault score. She did it better than previous meets but was scored lower than a time she messed up on the landing. I feel like she would have been a force to be reckoned with if she spent more time training. I agree with you on dawes too. She was well liked but they underscored her HEAVILY at times when she had more difficulty than Shannon, especially on floor. Shannon was amazing too no doubt but they definitely had favoritism because Tim literally said that Dawes shouldn't have beat her on floor when her floor was harder smh
@@murasakino101 Yes it was pretty clear to me the powers that be didn't want her on the team. Likely since she had defied Marta at some point, probably during the period she wasn't training as hard, and we know Marta had a drill sargeant approach with all the girls by then.
That Tasha fluff was heartbreaking to watch. The way her mother talked about her and how she talked about herself. Not to mention that NBC thought it was okay to broadcast that on national television? I’ll never understand why peoples personal struggles are used to make tv.
Right like why was her mom treating her like some work horse that has to make the Olympics for her like…
