Exactly. It's the same nonsense with "African American", U can't just be an American when ur a minority, they have to constantly remind of ur race. Ugh!
They were trying to make it a "The Olympics are in China so it may be destiny" thing. They generally always mention that Nastia's dad comes from the Soviet era and that they're Russian, trying to draw a parallel between the powerhouse Russian gymnastics history. When Dominique Moceanu was in the scene, they did the same with her Romanian history. It's a way NBC likes to up the drama. Not that they do it well or in good taste, but that's just NBC and their generally terrible coverage.
Also, Chows were on the Chinese Olympic Team so they were playing into that Olympics are in China and since one of the leaders on the US team is trained by the Chows I think they were playing into that.
Yes and Shawn's coach is Chinese. Coaching the Chinese style. Valeri didn't work Nastia as hard as Bela would have worked her. He burned gymnasts out at 14. Her father called her a "delicate" gymnast...he knew he couldn't work her too hard. In fact he started coaching her because after her first gymnastic lesson she came home with a busted eye area and told him she busted it doing a skill Valeri considered her not ready to be doing yet. She never had another coach besides him after that calling the shots. She never would have became what she did if they had sent her to Bela or a similar coach. They would have broke her. She never would have won Olympic AA at 19 if he had overworked her. Ignored injuries and didn't give them time to heal or had not realized Nastia was a delicate athlete. Valeri was the perfect coach for her, IMO....afterall look what he helped her achieve and "over the hill" at 18 and 19, as well. Maybe Bela should take some notes. Stop letting kids vault on broken ankles for his own notoriety. 😁👌
The editing of this video's beginning is so dramatic lol. Doom and gloom for Nastia, then suddenly rainbow and sunshine for Shawn. Anyway, Nastia's team was fantastically strategic. There was so much intelligence in the way they planned all her routines: opting for an easier vault in favor of perfect execution, and making up for that with a ridiculous bar routine, taking full advantage of connection points.
I know, it was a shame. I think she kinda under rotated and knew it so she pulled extra hard but ended up landing on her heals because she just didn’t get the height to prepare for landing upright
Poor Nastia: I think she was worked too hard by her father coach. She always looked unhappy. And Ivana Hong! Such a talent despite the very unfortunate errors.
If you watch interviews, Nastia and her dad often point out that they didn't push her into gymnastics, nor did they really encourage it. She wanted it, and pushed herself. Part of that Western European public demeanor is stoicism. It doesn't mean unhappiness, it just often looks that way compared to the bubbly public personas of Western culture.
All his gymnasts looked that way. Rebecca Bross, Katelynn Ohashi, and Nastia. They were the saddest looking gymnasts. Pooor Rebecca blew out her knee doin skills she wasn't ready to perform. She was missing all week in practice and she still threw them.
Not as hard as Bela would have worked her. He burned gymnasts out at 14. Her father called her a "delicate" gymnast...he knew he couldn't work her too hard. I'm not sure about the announcers talking about the competitors the way that they do (not kindly and overly critical), and the competitors in a space where they can hear. I think that's not okay.
Gotta love the NBC coverage, showing all of Nastia's mistakes notwithstanding the poor kid couldn't properly work out for a year. 🙄 Poor Shawn was hit with the Christie Philliips/Kim Zmeskal curse, couldn't live up to the hype. Nastia to my mind was the best female gymnast the United States ever produced.
I believe she was turning 15 that year which meant she could compete it was the same reason why she could compete at the olympics because that year she was turning 16 making her eligible you don’t have to be the specific age in compete you just have to be turning that age at some point during the year
i think that he has to see that she doesn't have the numbers behind her and what can you think will happen if she has an injured ankle and she's doing all 4 events on an injured ankle
Elise Xiao actually.... no. Simone never falls. lol. Simone has none right on her tail like shawn and nastia. there were others in the world very competitive with both Shawn and nastia, while Simone is in a league all her own
@@jojox9791 I've seen Simone fall a few times...you really haven't? Kaitlyn Ohashi beat her at the World Championships one year but then Ohashi retired because she was tired of being called fat.
I think Shawn should have won that gold. Nastia won with her bar routine. Where Shawn was outstanding in every event. Nastia was not. She relied on her bars set
With her body type and injuries it was practically impossible to upgrade in certain areas. She used the code to her advantage and won with a healthy margin. Nastia still has strong routines across the board. She got a medal on every event excluding bars for a reason. If anything, SHE was the true all-around gymnast.
Maybe it's just more of a "Western Culture" thing & we tend to be pretty snarky, disrespectful little brats towards our parents in comparison to a lot of other countries lol. But, from my OWN relationship with MY parents & how irritated I EVER got when either of my parents ever tried putting a negative word in in regards to my horseback riding in my training & competitions... And also from seeing it in person- my trainers daughter rode too... I just can't imagine how you could handle one of your own parents being your COACH TOO!!! Maybe some people who have never been in that position think it would be a GOOD thing for your parent to also be your coach.... But... NOOO lol. My trainers daughter NEVER listened to her- when she turned 16& got her license, she sent her & get 2 horses off to be a full time working student all summer to instead train with the Olympic rider who SHE trained with, who didn't take ANY talking back or disrespect & who was honestly kind of scary?! Because she just couldn't take her own MOM seriously enough as her trainer too & always argued and talked back & tried to defy her... Whereas the rest of us- whether we were 12, 17, 25, or 45? We were TERRIFIED of her!!! (And honestly, once I'd been training with her over 20yrs & had spent SOOOO much time around her- she started feeling like a second mom to ME & I got so much more comfortable around her- but with that, I lost my fear of her & quite a bit of the respect that came with it & started developing my own opinions and style for ways to ride& I couldn't help it- I started arguing with her & talking back & questioning things she said to me & Straight up getting into screaming matches with her both in relative "privacy" at the barn and even in public at shows & eventually I had to leave that facility & find a new trainer... I saw the same problems with my soccer teams- I played on a low level public league from about age 6-11, then tried out to be placed on a FAR more competitive, exclusive, and expensive private "Select" team from about 11-15, then I made my 4A Public School's 12 straight year state championship varsity girls soccer team my sophomore year but had to quit before my senior year to focus on my horses instead and riding in the Western Hemisphere Junior Olympics... But I definitely remember the season when we'd have a girl on the team who's father was one of our coaches- and there was ALWAYS tension there- and it always caused tention between the rest of the team because u couldn't HELP but feel the coach was playing favorites by giving his daughter more time on the field than girls who were playing better and trying harder! So, you didn't see it as much when it got more serious like on my varsity team in High School! I think I personally kinda lucked out never really getting too mad about the "favoritism for the coach's daughter" thing though when we switxhed our team format & moved me from playing center defense/fullback to instead playing Sweeper- so instead of there being multiple defense positions & usually at least 2 or 3 of us who could be depended on to play CENTER defense- Sweeper was a ONE person position- and you were basically gonna be "1st string sweeper" aka that is YOUR POSITION AND YOUR POSITION ONLY- IF YOURE ABLE TO STAND, RUN FOR TWO 45MIN HALVES ACROSS THE ENTIRE FIELD, ABLE TO KICK THAT BALL & CLEAR IT- OR 'SWEEP IT' out of your team's half clear across to the other end of the field, or immediately sprint from doing THAT to the complete opposite end of the field to be prepared to take a shot on goal?" Well. There usually isn't a 2nd "sweeper," maybe someone who plays midfield and also has a powerful, field clearing kick& is dependable to be tough& play through every game start to finish- they might be your substitute if for SOME reason you can't play... But it wasn't really a position I had to FIGHT for- I basically got selected to PLAY that position... kind of like the Keeper/Goalie is, too. But I definitely saw some seriously pissy, bitchy cattiness amongst my own team mates when the "center forwards DAD was the assistnt coach& even though she wasn't as good as so & so, she got more time on the field than so& so usually!" And it DID piss off EVERYONE because it's a TEAM sport & you're not allowing the team to play with it's best players!!! I guess in that sense it's a lot different than horseback riding OR Gymnastics... But, heck... For one, Maybe Russian parents are like, WAYYYYY scarier than American parents and that's how Nastia could come so far with her dad as her coach?! Let's just be honest here.... say if YOU were coached under Valeri Luikin in the same gym at the same level at the same time as Nastia- how could u NOT always have the thought creeping throughout the back of your mind that of COURSE he's playing favorites WITH HIS OWN DAUGHTER!!! Especially when the elite world is SOOO small and athletes only have a small window of time to be at their peak! I just don't think the whole "child & parent coach" is a very wise or successful game plan in this day and age or in this country! (if you ask me!!!) Not for the athletes who's parents coach them in solo sports such gymnastic OR in team sports such as soccer! And So WITH THAT I think it IS pretty dang amazing how Incredible Nastia's career was with her own DAD being her long time coach! That in ITSELF is an impressive feat, if u ask me!!
I think it really depends on the kid. To me, Chellsie Memmel's dad is the perfect coach for her...both here AND now as she attempts to make a return to the 2021 Olympics or Worlds.
This meet is just one of the many examples why I think Shawn should've won the gold at the Olympics. She is just wayyyy more consistent and powerful. Love Nastia, but it pains me knowing she got the gold lol

Because the olympics are we're in Beijing, China and that is where her coach is from.
@@youngcontrarian8532. Thank the white people in charge.
I love Minaj (Alicia S coach). I think he is what the US needs right now. I always liked him with Alicia and Aly.
And I meant Mihai
The coaching for Nastia and Shawn is very different
Nastias father is Russian it is the Russian style.
The gymnastics starts at 2:45
omg wtf nastia did a fhs double front!!!! I can barley do a fhs layout!!!!!
She is an Olympic Champoin and 5 times olympic meadlist. Inculding a brozen on floor.
I love Shawn! 💜
okay but alicia NAILED that floor routine wow
Nastia pushes herself harder than her father does normally when training. He has said this repeatedly in interviews.
The editing of this video's beginning is so dramatic lol. Doom and gloom for Nastia, then suddenly rainbow and sunshine for Shawn. Anyway, Nastia's team was fantastically strategic. There was so much intelligence in the way they planned all her routines: opting for an easier vault in favor of perfect execution, and making up for that with a ridiculous bar routine, taking full advantage of connection points.
sacrament can really fly!
Ivana Hong screwed up her beam, it was stellar until that dismount, and she landed on her butt and rolled back. Poor Ivana.
In fact he started coaching her because after her first gymnastic lesson she came home with a busted eye area and told him she busted it doing a skill Valeri considered her not ready to be doing yet. @@Janellabelle it makes me mad that some people even have the nerve to say many gymnasts would be nothing if it weren't for Bela and Marta. Like it's already enough some were being "treated" by that disgusting monster but they were being physically pushed too hard. They are plenty of gymnasts that are successful without the karoyl's help
shawn is so awsome get it girl!
they always zoom in on there face when they present
shawn is amazing
I MISS SHAWN SO MUCH :( LOVE HER TO DEATH
Once a Day,5 hours say about Shawn Johnson Whoa. To me that a beast HOLY CRAP!!!
I love these Gymanastic meets even thought is 2018
It's my favorite sport
she means that Nastia's leotard was a bit crazy. I'm assuming because Nastia never wears black. :)
Ivana Hong, the first of the many GAGE athletes who doesn’t have a good enough ring leap form. GAGE- figure that out.
Shawn was awesome but I’ve never seen her stick a landing. Her floor landings were good though
She stuck her bars landing here at 33:00 :)
4:53 Shawn Beam
7:20 Nastia Floor
14:04 Shawn Floor
17:22 Nastia Vault
18:48 Alicia Floor
The comments are so bad for Nastia here, mean, she won at the end, poor Shawn.
Shawn won, not Nastia
I think they're talking about the olympics
A full twisting double!! That’s crazy!!
Nastia shouldn't have competed here- its blatantly obvious she wasn't ready, and was clearly still injured.
Did they get rid of the "no one touch warmup" rule that was such a big deal a couple years earlier? It was a shitty rule.
I despise every time Tim says "They're like a kid on a playground". Pick a different analogy that doesn't compare them to children, geez.
MissLilRedRooster, he’s not comparing them to children. Ffs
I hate it when the sports commentators always be bragging on nastia as long as she's doing perfect, and not making mistakes and putting her on a pedestal, but as soon as she start making mistakes they forgot about her and started focusing on and bragging on Shawn Johnson as if they're trying to make it seem like nastia and Shawn are against one another, and they're not friends because it seems like they're trying to make one gymnastic girl feel good and one feel bad
Holy that uneven bar d score
This was a great meet! Alicia Sacramone is really hot. All of the gymnasts like her, Samantha Peszek, Shawn Johnson, Chellsie Memmel, Simone Biles, and Nastia Liukin, are the best in my generation!😊😍😘🌹👊🏾
Good job Shawn
Al seems unusually obsessed with Nastia’s age. They set her up the whole time saying “she’s so tired n old” creeps
My phone was blurry who won
Помню её отца на ЧЕ в Москве ,в 1986г.
on 6:34 that's SHAWN JOHNSON!!!!!!!♡
Ivona should have got points for still flipping from the beam to floor. 😂
I really wish he would say Nastia’s name right 😒
Ikr!! They keep saying Nastia Leeookin...
Does anyone agree that Ivana hong is a beautiful dancer
Alicia's double arabian was so nice!
Alicia does her floor routine amazingly
Al: This looks like a different kid!
Tim: *Shoot. Why didn’t I say that.
Also Tim: Ya, different Alicia for sure.
It’s called a “cover-up,” guys! Per Elfie! Thank god she speaks gymnastics and can decode it for the rest of us.
I love her!
I love watchinc
I'm not sure about the announcers talking about the competitors the way that they do (not kindly and overly critical), and the competitors in a space where they can hear. I think that's not okay.
Gotta love the NBC coverage, showing all of Nastia's mistakes notwithstanding the poor kid couldn't properly work out for a year. 🙄 Poor Shawn was hit with the Christie Philliips/Kim Zmeskal curse, couldn't live up to the hype. Nastia to my mind was the best female gymnast the United States ever produced.
Wow Shayla Worley was fantastic
i want to give couch Jeff Wood a huge bear hug
0:10 won't that cut her circulation
bubblehumble baby no it wouldn't. The tape is tight so it stabilises her ankle, but not so tight that it cuts off the circulation
i dont think its out there at all..
Who won? What are the scores? Did I missed that in the video?
I'm sorry, but what are you talking about?
its a opinion. leave her alone.
Wow Nastia's leo is a little out there
Its beautiful
I think that Nastia is better
Still no explanation why Ivana Hong was able to compete in this meet , worlds etc. at 14🤔
I believe she was turning 15 that year which meant she could compete it was the same reason why she could compete at the olympics because that year she was turning 16 making her eligible you don’t have to be the specific age in compete you just have to be turning that age at some point during the year
I think Nastia's dad/coach is a bit hard on her
Of course he is!
i think that he has to see that she doesn't have the numbers behind her and what can you think will happen if she has an injured ankle and she's doing all 4 events on an injured ankle
the people yelling when the gymnast are on bars is so annoying, im sure it is a bit off putting to the gymnasts.
I didnt know he was her father 😳
TD Bank
TTT to 55
it's disgusting the way they are talking about nastia
17:23
Shawn is the Simone of 2008, Nadia of 2008.
Kaitlyn Ohashi beat her at the World Championships one year but then Ohashi retired because she was tired of being called fat.
maseratic boychik PERIOD POO PERIOD POP OFF THIS GIRL KNOWS NOTHING
I love Nastia but she is so inconsistent
LOL @21:20
I think Shawn should have won that gold. Nastia won with her bar routine. Where Shawn was outstanding in every event. Nastia was not. She relied on her bars set
With her body type and injuries it was practically impossible to upgrade in certain areas. She used the code to her advantage and won with a healthy margin. Nastia still has strong routines across the board. She got a medal on every event excluding bars for a reason. If anything, SHE was the true all-around gymnast.
Nastia stuck her vault, beam and floor. Shawn stuck her bars. Yet Nastia only won becuz of her bars? Lol.
Shawn always had the ugliest leos
I think that leo is beautiful
This meet is just one of the many examples why I think Shawn should've won the gold at the Olympics. She is just wayyyy more consistent and powerful. Love Nastia, but it pains me knowing she got the gold lol
It pains you knowing that she got the gold? No, she deserved that Olympic AA titled. What a ridiculous statement.
