I just got my 8 lug black beauty. I found it to be more open and lively. I hear those same things here. Both are great drums but there is a clear difference. I have always used this rule. I can make a live drum more dead but I can't make a dead drum more live. Hence my choice to go with the 8 lug version.
Wow! I played 10-lug snares for a long time and never really thought about it. After seeing this video to my ears there is a BIG difference and I am now all about the 8-lug snare!! Thanks so much for posting!
My 10 lug Supraphonic of the Green and Turqois badge Era is super loud. I switced to a mahogany snare when I left heavy metal/hard rock scene for classic rock, jazz and r&b. Recently scored big venue outdoor gigs so the Supraphonic is coming back out!
I have the 90s Galaxy Blacrolite with 8 Imperial lugs, MIA & Black/Gray/White badge... falls exactly in line with the 'vanilla bean' 8-lug $upraphonic. I love that drum! I lucked out that that the factory ran outta bow ties ;)
I prefer a slightly dry snare sound, but the 10-lug sounds a little too dry compared to the 8-lug. However, there's a big difference between a recorded sound and an up-close acoustic sound, and I've heard and played some great 10-lug Supras. It wouldn't surprise me if I find the 8-lug too ringy in person.
I think the 10 lug overall sound is much more pleasing when it comes to the overtones. I never dampen my snare drums, I want to hear the shell sing. The 10 lug drum has more control over the overtones.
I've never heard of an 8 lug Supraphonic. Are you sure that's not an Acrolite that someone Chrome plated? There was never any 8 lug Supraphonic in any catalog. If Ludwig offered an 8 lug Supraphonic they would advertise it in their catalog.
I sold my very first acrolite thinking the same thing. Later on I found myself regretting it so now I own 2 acrolites (black galaxy and the 70s powder coated one) a Ludwig standard aluminum, Ludwig universal 2 piece brass with 6 lug, and a 6.5 x 14 pioneer. Back when those drums were made there wasn't a difference in quality. Only lug count. Thanks for watching.
That 10 lug cracks!! But, the 8 lug is "kushier". Hard to decide, really... I guess you could always mute up the 8 lug a little if you wanted to make a "denser" sound a la 10 lug??
@@boobo3763 i bought an old ludwig roker for $30 got a 1/8 thick sheet of rubber from amazon took appart all the lugs and instaled the rubber under each lug cutted the excess with an exactonlnife and it did take out a little of the cushy sound and maybe its just me but muffles de shell too so i get a little more attack out of it not too bad for $35 bucks

I surprised myself that I actually like the 8 lug better. It sounds throatier.
I really love the way the 8 lug drum sounds. I'm also really getting into the 6 lug pioneers. Thank you for watching!
That's what gives an Acro it's character,it has a bark
I like the 8 lug more, but what I use and have in my collection at this time is a 10 lug from 1976.
I really loved the range that the 10” has but you’re right, BOTH are such great drums! Really great video!
What surprised me most is that the 8-lug Supraphonic never sounded like an Acrolite.
True! I really want to make a comparison between the acrolite and the 8 lug supra.
@@destination_percussion Oh I can't wait

I think the 8 lug sounds better, more open and complex.

I think 10 takes it overall. But I think that the high tuned 8 sounds nicer than the 10.

The 8 lugger sounded its best at low tuning. The 10 lugger sounded best at medium & high tuning. No surprise at all.
I have a 10 lug '68 Supra. amazing. but I'm usually partial to 8 lug snares, even 6 if they're vintage-y.
The 8 lugs Is more open and has more sustain.

The 8 lug has bit more ring. Call it whatever you like. You can make it sound more like the 10 lug if you wanted
I find the eight lugs one more tasty. Bought one and waiting to the magic moment, Cheers, good video
Both are amazing, I like the 10 though.

I think just about everybody in the world has bought that Pearl hi hat clutch in the last three years 😄
No rubber gaskets!!!!!
I’d like to see a comparison between a Slingerland Radio King and Slingerland Artist Model…
Both are great snare drums..
Both of those drums are incredible! If I had both of them I would do a comparison of them! Thank you for watching, Roy!!!!!!
10 lugs 👍
I recently discovered Remo Emperor Smooth for snare batter side. Crackity crack crack!
Are those sizzle rivets on bottom hat?

Much better with 10 lugs.
i was told all my old 8 lug snares were worthless student crap. including a shallow 67 maple slingerland. blue to silver burst. wish i never sold it.🍻

@@destination_percussion they may of been 6 lugs not 8...now that i think about it...🤔🍻
どちらも良いですが、10ラグの方が音に芯がある印象です👍

Great comparison. Dollar for dollar I’ll take an acrolite any day over a supraphonic. Way over priced for being a dime a dozen.
I love a good Acro, too.
8 lugs not even close for me!
The Supra is slightly bigger ( width ) than the acro. Put them next to each other and take a picture. I'm not sure about the same aluminum shell.
10 lug no doubt

rim shots on every note? y tho?
The whole world seems to think it's the only way to play drums nowadays. Don't quite get it, myself...
