    For me, Remo drumheads get me to the sounds I hear in my head more than the other brands. I was an Evans fan when I was a kid though and they do have some standout products.

      I agree guys. I was evans for a long time but I went back to remo and haven’t looked back. For me with my old school kit they just make it soo much better, I couldn’t get the sound I was hearing in my head with evans, and I’ve found the durability with remo to be better than some of the evans range.

      I'm a bit split on the Remo/Evans debate. Grew up with Remo in the 90s. Mid 00s I went to Aquarian. Now on my main kit I run ebony pinstripes and powerstroke pros on the kicks. On my other kit I used coated g2s and I love them on that kit.

    Evans makes great heads and even as someone who exclusively played remo, when I was in sales I'd sell the Evans because they were easier to tune by a mile. I told every newer player buy a set of ec2s. even if you fuck up they'll sounds great. but I've always found that when tuned proper Remo sounds better and can't be beat, especially in studio applications. but tuning is hard lol

    I play EVANS cause of versatility, durability, and also something unique...a great near-field sound from behind the kit! I played some Ambassadors Clears, and from an "at the kit" perspective, Ambassadors just did not have as much tone as my personal EC2 Clears. Also ease of tuning is important when messing with a couple of lugs, when tuning lower, or higher for certain songs, Evans seem to be more receptive to different muffling devices as well!

    • @WavesByWayne
      @WavesByWayne 2 роки тому +5

      Well to be fair, an Ambassador is a Single ply head vs the EC2 Clear being more similar to the Remo Pinstripe. So naturally a Double ply head will give more tone. But, I see your point.

    • @GusOnDrums

    Great video. Like you I played Remo pretty exclusively for a number of years. They were nice heads and all, but kind of like you were saying, it always seemed like there'd always be that one head out of the whole set that just wouldn't quite tune up right the way I wanted it. So about 10 years ago or so I tried a set of Evans heads based on the recommendations of some other drummers and they sounded great and had no issues tuning up. Ever since then, I've exclusively used Evans. For my rock kit, I like the emad 2 for my bass drum, g14s for my rack toms, hydraulics for my floor toms, a coated hd genera for my maple snare, a power center reverse dot for my brass snare, and for my little bop kit I like the calftone heads.

    I switched to Evans years ago. One of the biggest things I noticed is that the evans heads sit flat on the bearing edge and dont slide around like Remo heads do. I believe this is one of the reasons Evans heads are easier to tune. Have had nothing but great luck with Evans heads.

    Remo are awesome and produces alot of tone but I don’t like the Remo drumheads Collar design because of how exposed the glue overtime the glue will rip out solid from the Rim of the head itself where the glue is poured in and that just makes me constantly changing out drum heads for my snare drum and then I switched to EVANS because of the collar design it don’t rip out that easy and it’s also Durable I love specially their Heavyweight heads and the Onyx and G2’s and I also love how it feels to play evans drum heads it gives me more of that not too soft not too hard of a feeling but still also produces a lot of tone and for me Evans is my number 1 choice of head.

    The Evans '56 Calftone heads are the best 'faux calf' heads in my opinion..the top bonded layer doesn't 'bubble up' like the other major 'fake calf' head manufacturer heads do. I put Evans G2 white coated batter heads on the toms on one of my kits and they really woke the toms up. I also have an Evans HD Genera Dry batter head on a 4 x 13" acrylic shell snare drum that I made and it took out a lot of the excessive ring in that drum. Altogether I'm quite pleased with my experiments with Evans heads.

    Tuning is one of many drumming skills. It takes knowledge and repetition to develop any drumming skill, and tuning is no exception. Your sound is everything so putting some time into learning about the mechanics in physics Involved in the product you output (which is your sound) is a very wise investment. When comparing drumhead options, one should be comparing the drumheads, not any of your own excuses. The two main factors for consideration are build quality and sound quality. They are your drums, and if they make you happy, you made the right choice.

    Those ISS mounts make tuning very difficult. You can tune off the stand, but when you pick the drum up and mount it by that hoop-gripping mount, the hoop will twist under the torque created by the weight of the drum, affecting the pressure on the head collar at that point. Consider a different mounting system for your next tuning improvement

    Evans has the best quality control of any of the companies. I've only seen one Evans head ever that shipped with a messed up collar. Remo, 1 in 7 heads is un-useable. So you can't order Remo heads online, because you have to check each collar since they so often are warped out of the factory. Also, Evans heads hold their tuning a LOT better than Remo and are more durable that Remo. However, Remo heads do record better in the studio. For some reason, the attack on Remo heads is a bit clearer, there's no doubt about it. If I can figure out how to get the attack from Evans that I get from Remo, I would LOVE to never ever have to use Remo again, except for my beloved Clear Powerstroke 3s on kick batter.

    🤷‍♂️ I think most people start evans because of school programs. Just like they use Pearl drums, Zildjian and Evans lol Its the go to for most school bands. But eventually, Remo just has that special sauce when accompanied with well made drums. Evans have active social media marketing. And Promark is a nice addition to the brand for endorsees. But I went Remo after using Evans in school back in 05’ lol. Sabian over Zildjian. And Tama over Pearl. However, I do like Pearl’s manufacturing decisions better.
