Can Dogs Eat Grapes (or will one mouthful kill them)? - Dog Health Vet Advice
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 тра 2019
- Have you heard that grapes are poisonous for dogs? Can dogs eat grapes and raisins or is it true that they can kill?
The answer is not as straight forward as you might imagine. Different individuals have different susceptibilities.
Some dogs can cope with a belly full while others will develop acute kidney injury and die after eating only a handful of grapes. It really can be that varied.
There have been incidences of dogs being poisoned after eating significantly fewer grapes or raisins than the reported toxic dose, including an 18lb dog dying after eating 4-5 grapes. Any grape or raisin ingestion should prompt an immediate call to your veterinarian
There are some suggestions of what the toxic dose is, and you can find a calculator based on your dog's weight here: ourpetshealth.com/info/are-ra...
Time and again though, there are reports of dogs being poisoned after eating less than this and so my advice would be to always contact your veterinarian if your dog has eaten any grapes or raisins.
It's much better to be safe than sorry.

my dog has been eating grapes for years and she has never had any symptoms, i never knew they were dangerous for them, i freaked out so bad when i found out that grapes can kill dogs, i stopped giving her grapes after that... but i am very scared, i hope i havent caused too much harm... she seems fine but im not taking any chances...
Obviously don’t just go feeding dogs a bunch of grapes, but don’t self diagnose yourself or others using google it freaks you out at 99/100 times it’s not true. Always ask a doctor.
I fed my dog grapes whenever I was having fruit for... almost a decade (Dog ended up living to 18)
Friend of mine was over and was life "WTF are you doing?!!!" And that was the first time I'd ever heard of grapes killing dogs. And I mean, she'd have like 2 cupfuls of grapes each time
Your dog was lucky. It's a weird thing. Some dogs grapes are fine with, some dogs die easily eating grapes.
Imagine how long she would've loved if she never had grapes O-O
I'm right there with you man. My Siberian husky has eaten grapes like no tomorrow and hes healthy as an ox
Thank you so much for the information! Very practical and useful 👍
My pleasure!
My uncle had grape vines on his land and his great dane ate them like candy for 12 years. It's weird how some dogs react to them and some seemingly don't at all.
My grandparents’ dog also ate grapes every year when they grew in the garden and is doing fine, also around 12 year old now
It has to do with the diets.. grapes are fine.
My Yorkie ate like ten grapes once. He survived thankfully with no effects from what I saw
@Jack Sparrow yeah exactly, they have human diets where you eat only grapes for health, you must fast for 3 days before starting to clear out your body 1st.
@Jack Sparrow What's "V"?
I’ve got a Maltese poodle so he’s relatively small and I used to feed him grapes all the time before I knew the dangers of grapes. He loved them and every time I would open up a bag of grapes, I would here his little foot steps coming down the stairs and run up to me and wait for a grape.
Nothing ever happened to him. I would give some to him every day and I would witness him eat it and swallow it, but nothing ever happened to him. I don’t know if he is a special case where he’s immune to whatever it is about grapes or the entire thing is just bogus and we were lied to about grapes.
I don't think it's bogus. And by think, I mean I pretty much know. It's literally the same thing with chocolate. However, there is some truth to it. Grapes, chocolate, among other things, ARE NOT GOOD for dogs (and other creatures). For some reason, this factual information QUICKLY equates to one single grape, or one tiny bite of chocolate will nuke your dog dead within seconds. Even a lick, or a whiff of a grape or a piece of chocolate will have your dog puking blood and/or shitting their organs out their asshole. Sure, maybe a dog somewhere at some point in time, maybe the 1700's, maybe yesterday, died from eating 1 single grape. Maybe a dog died in the 1800's or 1900's from having 1 single bite of chocolate. Who knows? No one does, because its so rare it would be a special case with a special dog. Not all dogs are the same just like not all people are the same. Shocking, I know. A dog isn't going to die from ingesting a single grape, or from eating a chocolate bar. Does this mean feed dogs grapes and chocolate then? If they won't die from eating just one? NO! The stupidity and retardation of most people kills me more than a grape or chocolate candy bar could ever kill a dog however! That is 100% for sure!
Honestly I was about to start crying after other videos a d websites scared me. She ate half a grape as a 25 pound dog, honestly I was terrified and we can’t contact someone nor have hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting. You calmed me down and hopefully we can talk to the vet tomorrow

Can someone please let me know, I have the 8 puppies that are 4 green grapes.😊
My 6 month old puppy who weighs around 32kg ate 3 grapes. I was terrified, rushed her to the emergency vets. They took about 3 hours before they induced vomiting, the grapes came out in the vomit. It's the following day now and she seems fine, just very tired and sleepy. Going to my vet today to collect another dose of activated charcoal.
My 3kg yorkie had a grape by accident and I almost had an anxiety attack. Its been a day and she shows no symptoms yet. Will keep you posted.

My Chihuahua ate 3 pounds of red seedless grapes - vine and all. Should I be worried!? Six hours later he’s passed out asleep on his back snoring with his tongue hanging out of his mouth. The only thing out of the ordinary is his right leg keeps shaking violently. Idk for sure, by my guess is he’s just running from demons in his nightmares. He is a little bastard, serves him right.
Edit: (one month later) Banjo is fine 😁He took a big shit the next morning and the only thing noteworthy about it was the eye co tact he made with me while he did his business. It was focused and almost transcendent. He never broke his gaze from the moment he squatted til the last log hit the deck. I swear this is a damned sole snatching mongrel in a furry suit
You should start writing comedies....that was hilarious!!
Eye contact while he did his business..:))) Dogs can't hold our hands while shiting, that's why that look....it help them concentrate, you must have a calming face...

What I think the majority of the commenters to this post saying “I’ve fed my dog grapes for years with no I’ll effect” are missing is that Dr. Alex is saying it’s not *always* deadly for some dogs, but others *are* sensitive, for whatever reason.
It’s kinda like prostate cancer. Almost every male over the age of 75 will develop prostate cancer, but it’s entirely survivable for the vast majority with treatment. But there are some who get aggressive forms of prostate cancer and need more aggressive treatment than others to live longer.
What “I’ve fed my dog grapes for years with no I’ll effect” suggests is that no one should worry about their dog eating grapes, and that is flatly wrong.
Unfortunately, this comment section is suffering from self-selection bias because the owners of dogs who were sensitive to grapes and died are not likely needing to nor interested in revisiting the topic, about which they already know, so the number who are watching videos about the subject are much smaller than the survivors’ owners.
Just keep that in mind.
I couldn't have said it better myself!
Man I gave my dog like seven or eight grapes and in the middle of the night she started throwing up and bleeding and shaking and I told my mom so we took her to a friend who was a vet and she helped big time, I'm just happy my baby is still alive and well

my 6 month old pittie ate a whole bag of green grapes and nothing happened to him, we even took him to the vet and made him test for kidney and blood results turn out fine. I dont know why some dogs gets really ill
Great your dog was fine. There have been new insights into why this is which I have written about here - ourpetshealth.com/info/are-raisins-poisonous-for-dogs
I didn't know that raisins and grapes were harmful to dogs until just recently. I have fed grapes to my dog 4/2 years not on a daily or even a monthly basis just a few here and there as a treat because he loves them. He hasn't had any ill effects however I'm not going to feed them to him anymore JIC
This is part of the difficulty! It's impossible to know which dogs are more sensitive to poisoning and which will never have problems. I think your plan in sensible - better safe than sorry

I had no idea grapes were bad for dogs. I love grapes and have always kept some on hand. My wife’s 20 pound mutt was a shameless beggar and would always be there at grape time and working for a handout. He would sometimes eat 15 or 20 at a single sitting. I bet I tossed him a million grapes over his 14 years of life without a single grape-related health problem that I know of. He finally had to be put down because of terrible hip dysplasia.
Wait... OMG!! Are you telling me he would have lived to be 15 if I hadn’t fed him all those grapes?? Now I feel like an idiot.
Grapes are fine they heal
@@Deestroyer82 They sure didn't hurt Wifey's mutt.
Has this been clinically proven or just myth with no way to prove or disprove so people just take a better safe than sorry approach and treat it as truth? the vets have no incentives to disprove it since panic owners who accidentally give a grape to their dogs will pay thousands for emergency treatments just to be safe, and if your dog was fine after having grapes for years it can't be used as evidence since your dog being fine eating grape doesn't disprove grapes might be harmful to other dogs, very strange situation if you ask me especially after all these years they still haven't found out the mechanics of the poisoning or even identify the chemical that's responsible. how many dogs died of grape poisoning each year, any data?
@@user-px7wy4bg7u Once I was told by a son's girlfriend that grapes were "deadly" to dogs I did a little research online and decided to stop giving them to him. I'm still not sure it isn't total hogwash though. I know for sure our dog loved them, ate thousands of them, and lived to be really old and then died of something else. He was chihuahua mixed with something bigger.
@@ralphcantrell3214 The problem is the people are spending thousands of dollars because of their dogs ate 1 grape by accident. very suspicious to me that one grape can do that much damage and still no clinical trial to find out why, considered that the vets have the that much incentives to keep the lie going..
