Raisin + Grape Poisoning in Dogs: How Many Will Kill?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 лют 2018
- Is it true? Are raisins poisonous for dogs? What about grapes? How many raisins or grapes will kill a dog and when should you be concerned?
There is no doubt about it, dogs can and do die after eating raisins and grapes. They definitely have the potential to be toxic and are common pet poisons you should definitely be aware of. There are two problems though. The first is that no-one knows exactly what it is in the grape that causes the problem, and the second is that not every animal is affected equally.
The bottom line is that we don't know how many grapes or raisins will kill an individual dog, for some it may be a very small number while others may eat a much larger amount and be completely fine. The only way to know would be to let you dog eat some and watch what happens - obviously not something I'd recommend.
For those dogs that are poisoned by raisins and grapes, kidney damage takes place and the dog goes on to develop kidney failure. If caught early this may be reversible and a full recovery can be made. The longer the damage is left untreated the harder this recovery will become. If left too long, or if the toxicity to that individual is too great, it may be the case that no treatment will be able to save the dog.
Some people will be happy to just watch their pet and if they show any signs or symptoms of poisoning such as vomiting, diarrhea, pain, weakness, wobbliness or if they go off their food to then seek treatment. The obvious problem with this approach is that if the kidneys are damaged then this may be irreversible and treatment may not be able to save them where more may have been able to have been done had they seen a vet straight away.
Because the consequences are so severe I would recommend a more risk averse approach. If your pet has eaten more than the lowest reported toxic dose then you should contact your vet straight away for advice. If they have eaten less than this amount then there is an argument that you should still contact your vet straight away. Prompt treatment is much more likely to be successful compared to treatment after your pet is already unwell.

A lot of people in the comments are saying their dogs are not showing signs of poisoning after eating a grape. The dog that I had when I was a toddler until the middle of high school was a beast for eating anything. She was a golden retriever/yellow lab mix, and she could handle anything that she could eat (I'm not saying that she ate everything, just normal food). Now I'm an adult trying to finish getting my associates, and my family had gotten an 8 week old puppy (chihuahua/dachsund/brussel griffon mix) over a month ago (she's 14 weeks now). I had given her a grape to her not knowing that they were poisonous. The next day, she had started vomiting every time she would try to eat or drink something. When I had googled to see if grapes were poisonous to dogs, I felt so bad because I wasn't sure what was gonna happen to her. There were 6 or 7 symptoms for grape poisoning, but she only had vomiting. It was kind of hilarious, because she would vomit and be like "Oh, that was kind of disgusting. Okay! Let's go back to playing!" She acted normal other than the vomiting. We had to feed her smaller amounts of food so that she could hold it down. She slowed down of vomiting after 3 days. After that, she would periodically just randomly puke after getting too excited or just dry heaves for no reason. But now, she hasn't puked at all in a while, and we're happy that she's all right.
Hey, I got a Yorkie and I think he might have eaten a radon or 2, how concerned should I be? I’m not sure cause he ate part of a raisin bagel, but what should I look for and when should I be scared
My Chihuahua pincher mix ate about 1.5 raisins she is about 8.9 pounds she used to eat a lot of grapes and dried grape juice will he be ok?
My dog ate about 1.6oz of raisins Sun-Maid brand. Hes about 55-60lbs. I don't know when he ate them as I was at work, but he hasn't shown any symptoms yet. His pee was normal, stool was normal. It's almost been 24hrs. I gave him around 1500mg of activated charcoal when I got home and 1040mg this morning since vomiting is not an option anymore (was 8hrs before finding he ate them) do you feel he'll be alright?
I'm not sure how many raisins that wound be. Check out the pinned comment for a calculator. It can take a couple of days for symptoms to become apparent

my dog (he's about 80-90 lbs) might have eaten grapes (5 at most, but i'm not sure if he ate any at all) about 2 hours ago. i couldn’t induce vomiting, and i can't take him to a vet since it's 2 am on a holiday. i also can't call poison control because it's very expensive. i'm really worried about him and have been keeping an eye on him. do y'all think he'll be okay?

My 30-35 pounds terrier/chinese sharpei mix ate 3 grapes, hope he's okay :-(. I fed them to him then forgot I couldn't because I haven't had them in years. Considering you said a ten pound dog would have to eat 17, i'm sure he will be fine eating 3.. I will monitor him tomorrow. Hoping for the best he's my buddy.

While I was out for a minute my dog snatched an entire bowl of grapes off the table and ate all of them (she is sneaky that way and she loves fruit) I had no clue that grapes were super toxic to animals and can cause kidney failure. Luckily I did a quick Google search just to be sure. A vet trip later (a 730 dollar vet trip) she is now a patient at the clinic for the next two nights. Great way to start my week 😑
I hope she's OK
How did your dog make out??

Hi - my dog is 48 lbs and this morning she snatched part of my rasin bagel off the counter. I think she only may have gotten only one. Should I be very worried?
technically he would be ok because one raisin wont be fatal (i am not saying anybody should give a dog one raisin) . did he have any symptoms ?
I accidentally gave my dog one raisin about 7 hours ago without realizing how toxic they are, he is acting normal with no symptoms I’m worried sick my family is laughing it off, I wanted to take him to the vet but my family said no. I called an animal hospital near me and they told me to monitor him and possibly bring him in for a blood test in the next few days to check but I’m still so worried. Should I be so worried?

Hi all worried dog parents. My dog ate one grape recently and I turned to this video for answers. It’s now three days later and there have been no noticeable problems whatsoever. My dog is a rescued 75 pound black lab pit bull mix. I believe that he’s large enough that one grape didn’t have much of an impact on him, it was diluted enough by his body weight and dog treats/food I gave him right after. If your dog is like 15 pounds, then there’s probably more reason for concern if they get a hold of a few grapes!

One of dobermans managed to get a hold of, and eat, a whole punnet full of grapes. They were not at my house at the time but a relatives and we had popped out of the their house breifly for apppx 20 mins to go to the shop. When we came back, noticed the empty grape box on the floor and I counted the empty grape stalks had what would have been approx 40 to 50 grapes on it. I have two dogs , one of the dogs Sam who is 41 kg (the dog who is the counter surfer and at the grapes) and the other Frodo is 45 kg. I was unsure which of the dogs ate the grapes or if they had both eaten the grapes between them. I took them to the vets within approx 2 hours of me noticing the grapes had been eaten. I was pretty sure that only sam had eaten the grapes as he is the one who steals of the kitchen counter surfaces! However as I was unsure they were both treated. The treatment involved giving a medicine called apomorphine (an emetic) to both of my dogs, which induced them to be sick. We had noticed from the vomit that sams was full of red grapes whilst Frodo's was justhis normal dog food and a bit of grass which he must have eaten on his walk earlier. We took the vets advice and put Sam on intravenous drip of fluids to help prevent any damage to his kidneys from any grape substance that may have been absorbed in his digestive system and into the blood stream. He had blood samples taken to check for any markers of kidney damage before he was put on IV fluid. He his currently at the vets now and we are due to collect him (cant wait neither can his best friend Frodo). We are told that Sam is doing well and his blood sample has been repeated and everything is well. Importantly, Sam did not show any signs of toxicity after he had eaten the grapes, but to be on the safe side we still took Sam to the vets as there was possibility of kidney damage and death which is entirely preventable if the treatment is started on time. It was expensive but I didnt want to risk the chance of serious problem. If you have any doubt then take them to the vets.
Naughty Sam! You're absolutely right that it's far better to play it safe, and do what you did, rather than risk kidney failure

My dog (30#) ate a whole bag of raisins. I was able to get her to the vet and induce throwing up within 3 hours. The vet was so shocked with the quantity that they advised that she get flushed with an IV. Even with IV at 48 hours her numbers were elevated. 72 hours of IV she was OK. I don't want to think what would have happened if I hadn't noticed and got her to emergency care. You guys may not believe it, but please monitor your dog and keep grapes, avocados, raisins, apple cores, etc away from them.

My Staffy (about 15kg) stole two Christmas pies last night. I was more worried about the tinfoil until I took her into the vet for a bit of advice on that. They scared the bejeezus out of me with their tales of toxicity and no lowest dose known etc. It's 15 hours later and she's not showing any symptoms at all. By my calculations she's eaten about 16g of raisins (14 raisins). The vet is wanting to keep her in over night and charge me £250 just to begin with. I can't really afford that, but obviously I will feel guilty forever if she dies or gets ill!
I hope she's one of those dogs who is unaffected
@@OurPetsHealth shes absolutely fine. Upon closer examination of the box the pies came in, there were long curly hairs on it, no short staffy hairs. I spent a lot of time research on this subject matter, but hardly could I find case where dog actually die from eating grapes or muscadine.
Not sure people make this such a serious issue/topic because the vet just want to make money from pet owners. Anything happen, go to vet. But what can people do to protect their pets on their own as well because not everyone is able to pay for the high pet fees.
Because why don’t there are more videos and information that talk about what to do if your dog eat grapes. Like you should get your dog to vomit before 2 hrs, etc. Things that the vet will do when you take the pet to the vet, like they going to try to get your dog vomit using xyz, take bloodwork, give fluid, etc.
I couldn’t even find any statistics that show how many dogs die from grapes. I couldn’t even find a single video on UA-cam that anyone talked about their dog die because of grapes. I only see videos that there are dogs that are eating grapes and muscadine.
So is this toxic from grape is similar to people who are allergic to certain things? Like some people can eat nuts/shrimps they okay, while a few may have severe reaction.
I am not sure what to trust. But I am just getting an impression that vet just want pet owner’s money. Not sure if they put this fear about grapes out there to get people take their pet to the vet so vet get paid big money.
If they are more concerned about the dogs, then there should be more educational videos of showing others of what to do themselves to save their dogs rather than everything take to the vet. I am just getting the impression that it is all about using “fear about grape” for promotion, for pet owner to take their dog to the vet.
If anyone have dogs that ate grape and were severely sick or died, please share to everyone so we know.
Amen.
I know someone whose dog suffered kidney problems after eating some raisins. Still recovering weeks later.
My little 20lbs dogs ate muscadine. They survived!
My 20lbs dogs ate muscadine about a year ago and they are still alive and super healthy. What I learned from this was that. If your dogs eat muscadine, then induce vomiting is essential (I forgot within how many hours after the dog eat muscadine). After a certain amount of time, it would be too late to attempt to induce vomiting; you don’t have much choice at this point because the muscadine is already digested into the dogs system. I took my dogs to the vet, and this place that I went to, they had ethical vet and charged us just about $200 for 2 dogs for exam and blood work. I don’t trust most of the other vet that I went to. It is unfortunate, but it seemed that almost all the vet are out there to get as much money from you as they can. It is very unethical. Maybe there should be health insurance for pet and pet owner just pay the co-pay and let the rest of the bills for the insurance company to take care of.
I feel that health of the dog's kidneys have a lot to do with how many it could eat before fatal kidney failure
It's certainly possible that that plays a role in some dogs, and I would definitely be more cautious if I know a dog had pre-existing kidney failure

I see no comments about someone's dog having a case of grape or raisin poisoning. Everyone's dog seemed just fine after ingesting a small quantity.
I know someone whose dog was fed raisins by a dog sitter. The dog has suffered kidney problems and hasn't recovered properly weeks later.
@@mcjs8640 Sad to hear that. The fact that it was a preventable thing.
My dogs ate raisins nothing

My dog ate 4 raisin cookies and 3 chocolate cookies please help will she die
All depends on size of dog and number of raisins or amount of chocolate eaten. Video has all the information you need and I have a chocolate poisoning video too
