  • Today, I take you on a review tour of the BMW E60 M5. When the E60 M5 was released in 2005. The M5 instantly became legendary when BMW Motorsport decided to slap an F1-derived V10 in it. The E60 M5 was also the world's most powerful, the fastest, and one of the most unreliable sedans ever made that is a risk to own.

I have owned e60 M5 6 spd for 7 years. Put 60k miles on her, so there is a total of 135k miles on her. One of the most reliable cars I have ever owned. Bitch to work on her myself but with proper maintenance, there are no issues. My car is all original, including rod bearings

The issue with this model isn't so much the need for regular maintenance - not that it hurts - but rather, the issue is the tolerances are so fine within the engine the conrod bearings wear out when people beat on the car before the engine is fully warmed up. 10w60 motor oil is like syrup when it's cold and that's the viscosity which is specified for this engine. The consensus is owners should stay below 4000rpm for at least 7 minutes after doing a cold start on an e60 M5 V10 engine.

      Totally agree. Similar experience.

If you maintain them, they are solid. Many neglect them which is the reason why they have issues!

A fantastic car to own (late 2007 LCI model) nearly four years of ownership what a buzz , it’s been very reliable. 😎🇬🇧👍
Btw the top speed for this car is 204 mph some people have hit 210 mph , I’ve managed 175 mph with ease but ran out of road.
Any questions on what to look for when purchasing plus ownership cost etc I will answer any questions but anything to technical an M mechanic is needed as I’m not a mechanic, cheers.
PS: it’s only unreliable if the services and maintenance are not kept up plus people use cheap Chinese parts.

Some people say that the M5 can do over 200 mph but is your M5 engine bone stock though with just 500bhp?
Btw that's awesome that you found a well maintained one. It's an awesome car but always been unreliable and rare. Some of them are updated and more reliable than the other models.
BMW says that the E60 M5 estimated top speed is 190 mph but some can go over that.

@@christheradar …in the uk /Europe the top speed it definitely 204 mph , my engine is factory stock all I’ve done is fitted carbon fibre air intakes from evolve which sound amazing plus give the car a little more hp and it came with a switchable exhaust which deletes the rear box’s so it sounds awesome but not to loud , so it’s probably running around 530 bhp. 👍
The key to looking after these cars is warming the car to temperature and keeping below 3k revs in the process this also warms the gearbox and clutch at the Same time , for preventative maintenance I had the throttle actuators changed for upgraded ones and the circuit boards that go with them so these are now done for the life of the car costing only £620 which for a performance car is nothing , the only other problem I’ve had was the oil cooler which is positioned under the front bumper around £300 fitted including parts , I have to say I would never use this car as a daily runner it’s only a weekend toy plus it keeps the mileage low as these cars are rising in price quite quickly now.

If this car is properly maintained it is a reliable car, owned mine for 16 years now. The E60M5 hits easily 205 MPH and not 190 as you said. More than 330 km/h!!!

I know, I was told from someone else in the comments that the E60 M5 can do 204-205 mph in Europe. But the U.S version I believe is estimated around 190 mph the last time I researched. And yes that's if anyone has a lot of money to burn to keep maintaining the car.

@@christheradar Yeah, it’s a pitty not to have the Deutsche Autobahn, where you can overtake and pass with little throttle at 280 km/h a Police car that is cruising at 240, and than increasing to the horizont.
I disagree with you at the point of “burning” money, our other car from Zuffenhausen is a lot expensier :)

@@christheradar thanks for your response. Mine has reached 338 km/h with GPS measured and could go on and on, crazy, but traffic was my opponent.
Believe me that some other cars I own were heavier in maintenance costs than the M5

    Another fantastic video! Thank you.
A kind request; now that it's out of production, if you have the time, are you able to make a video on the brilliant F90 M5 CS? This one-off special truly is one of the all-time greats. With electrification now on the M5's doorstep and all the weight that comes with it, I doubt we'll be seeing another of its kind. The M5 CS is a great addition to a very successful bloodline and the very best the F90 generation has to offer. Long live the King!

I vividly remember when this E60 M5 was released. It was a huge deal! Its engine was more exotic than engines that powered exotics. No one to this day makes super sedans like the ///M division!

La cosa più affascinante di questo mondo è che gli ingegneri tedeschi sbandarono l angolo del motore di ben 52 gradi (il valore delle piramidi egizie)!

Step 1) Set a budget and buy the best condition unit you can find, and 2) Fix/replace the wear items . Then 3) Enjoy the thing for a very long time like the rest of us very happy owners.

1- 204-207 mph top speed with gov removed
    2- the seats in the e60 m5 have " active seats "
3- rod bearings can be upgraded and other goodies from failing
4- plz never talk about this car again lol....

I had one, clutch went at 30k cost £2500. I disliked the car, awful round town, awful gearbox. Only good when being driven hard. Hideous daily drive. Avoid .
