That was an awesome moment for sure. Especially when he had been teased to appear in the opening song of DBZ, and stood along witht the Z fighters. Had to wait for Trunks to appear after the Garlic Jr filler.
Future Trunks is without a doubt my favourite DBZ character. He's badass, no nonsense, and gets shit done when it comes to fighting and it's always so entertaining watching him have a mental breakdown when the other Saiyans can't help themselves but let their enemies power up for a good fight.
The dynamic of him being efficient in contrast to all the other saiyans is so good
@@gallenberger1 its worth noting too as you stated in your video Trunks' Vegeta shows when he plays with his enemies like with Frieza or King Cold, but the important difference is that his cockiness shows when fighting his opponents he knows he'll easily dispatch that have no hope of winning even if they do power up, but when it comes to the androids and especially Cell, his whole world crumbled to ruins and life became an endless struggle for survival because of them, he knew he couldn't afford to take them lightly and to take any chance he can get to destroy them before they become too much. It really adds depth to his character when you see him be extremely confident only to be so cautious and outright terrified of an enemy he came to the past to warn the Z Fighters about despite the FACT that he JUST straight up deleted the most powerful emperor of the universe and his father without so much as btraking a sweat. You have to understand that Toriyama was already fascinated with the concept of Time Travel and was already well acquainted with such works as Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest series.

@Xurreal-wc9he He was one of a kind no doubt. Glad you pointed that out, cool to learn!

Amazing video. One of the most epic scenes in all of DBZ is future Trunks showing up out of nowhere and destroying Frieza and King Cold.
It really is
I don't think I've seen anyone mentioned this but 3:34 that hand motion is what android 18 does whenever she successfully beats someone or is taunting them. As a psyc major, this level of PTSD is what fascinates me to no end. He's associating this gesture as a sign of power, something that he seldom feels he has in his future. And then he goes back in time and for the first time fight someone who's so far beneath him, yet he doesn't gloat (too much), doesn't prolonged the fight (not as long as prince of saiyin-alot and son "I don't want to kill you because i want to fight you again" Goku) to revel in the power he has over his opponents. Just that one hand gesture that has basically been ingrained into him, whether he realizes it or not, that proves he has power over his opponents.
That's a crazy catch. Holy shit, that's awesome.
Akira Toriyama was definitely watching some American 80s action movies when he came up with Trunks
@picxal1948 Glad he was!
Inspired by Terminator 😎
@@domc192 James Cameron
The reason why Toriyama's work is so groundbreaking is because he created a certain formula for action anime that guarantees to give consistent entertainment to an audience. I like to call it "the EDM (electronic dance music)" effect.
In EDM music, there's a "build-up" and a "drop". Tension is created through different forms of amplitude, then we have the intense climax moment, and the song transforms into a new, more intense, song. This formula manipulates the brain's dopamine system to create a very satisfying outcome. The pleasure from the second half of the song is enhanced not only because it's more intense, but because we were made to wait for it. The added anticipation made things more dramatic, and thus, more pleasurable when we finally got it.
What Toriyama would do with his writing is similar. He would constantly make Goku incapacitated ON PURPOSE. In the Saiyan arc, Goku is stuck in heaven. In the Namek arc, Goku is stuck in a spaceship. Same arc, Goku is stuck in a healing pod. Android arc, Goku is fighting heart disease. Cell arc, Goku is in the hyperbolic time chamber. We are constantly WAITING for Goku to join the fight.
In the meantime, we see his new enemies showing off their crazy power and we see his allies struggling and coming closer and closer to defeat by the new enemies. All of this is done to build TENSION. Then when Goku finally joins the fight, the tension is released and we get our epic battle.
Originally, we thought the Saiyans were the biggest threat. Then, the galactic emperor. Then, robots from the future.
Immediately after one threat is resolved, Toriyama introduces a new threat. A guy from the future kills the galactic emperor. The tension is released, but IMMEDIATELY we have a new, "stronger", tension being created. Because Trunks needs help!!
I hope you get what I'm saying here lol. Basically, Toriyama's writing is constant tension build and release- and he finds cool ways to create it. Whether it's with strongs aliens or strong future robots! Any anime with a "training arc" now, which is ALL of them, is using the same formula.
Tension building = (Goku being unavailable and everyone else proving to be too weak)
Release = (Goku finally shows up and fights the bad guy)
@@dantepatel This is a great breakdown of why DBZ works so well

Future Trunks really stands out like a sore thumb amongst other dbz characters.
Think about it, all the other "z warriors" at the time when trunks was introduced were all big burly men with the exception of gohan (and maybe krillin).
But then trunks appeared out of nowhere- this high school age pretty boy with the coolest 90s' drip and a sword. Also his whole personality was so different from the others- he was quiet, shy, introverted, soft-spokean and way less macho than the other z warriors. ....I don't think time travel is the craziest concept for comic book readers.
Hell, aren't the androids directly inspired by Terminator? The go-to Sci fi film about someone coming to the past to save the future?
@citizenlame246 It's not time travel by itself. It's adding time travel into a show with no basis for it hundreds of episodes in and making it work perfectly.
@gallenberger1 I do agree that Toriyama is impressive as a storyteller, I'd also argue that sci-fi had been a big part of DragonBall from the beginning what with Capsule Corp itself, and then introducing Saiyans and Freeza solidified that. And what's a staple of sci-fi if not time travel? So it didn't really come out of nowhere, just the end result of a long trip towards sci-fi.
Which is impressive! But not really anything new for comic books. Superheroes do time travel out of nowhere all the time, look at Superboy and The Legion of Superheroes.

Dragon Ball first R&R arc: Terminator 1 without the time travel. There is even an Arnold Schwarzawhoseits looking robot in DB.
DBZ Android arc: Terminator 2. Trunks is John Connor but he is coming back the past to fix things. Hairstyle kind of resembles John. Future Gohan has a scar like old John Connor (but so does Yamcha lol). Both stories with futures destroyed by robots/android aka sentient being made by humans.
Also, on May 12th when the Androids attacked in DBZ, that is the same date Arnold(terminator) came back to 1984 to kill Sarah Connor.

I disagree with your assertion that it was risky bringing time travel into the show. If anything, it was the easiest decision. At that time, people were more invested in space and the future. The space race between the US and USSR had just ended. Sci fi was the most successful genre. Star Wars, Terminator, Back to The Future had all been box office hits. Star Trek TNG was one of the biggest tv shows. And part of Trunks story is reminiscent of the Terminator. I think you got that completely wrong.
Toriyama was certainly a fan of Terminator. That doesn't really change that adding time travel almost 300 episodes into an action/adventure series is pretty ambitious. This is an interesting way to look at it though, and I don't really disagree
Basically Toriyama was lazy AF. But also a true genius. I will always love and admire him. ❤
I have to disagree about Trunks being the one to introduce time travel in Dragon Ball, if I remember correctly in the original series while training at the Kami lookout with Popo he was send back in time to meet Mutaito.

I love me some Trunks, but it seems like you're suggesting Akira Toriyama invented the science fiction trope of time travel, which is not the case. I mean the first Terminator film is practically the same plot as the Android Saga and it came out almost 10 years prior.
The novel part of what he did was how he included time travel, not that he invented it.
History of Trunks movie was my favorite DBZ film back in the day I knew it word for word.
@@Halfwronggames It was incredible
I'm on the fence about Trunks, personally. In my youth I thought he was cool and I still do love his design, and he goes back in time for good reasons. He shows up, mercs Frieza in front of his own dad in the most disrespectful way we ever see up to that point, then mercs the dad, along with all of his soldiers, with barely a strand of hair out of place. But when push comes to shove, when it really counts, he fumbles on purpose.
You go into Trunks' history around 2:18 and list all these elements that make his character great. And later on you go on about how he clearly has PTSD through being raised in such a horrible environment, not being raised to be a warrior or a fighter, but just tying to survive.
Yet when it matters most, he lets everyone down. He is 1:1 responsible for everything bad that happens after Cell absorbs Android 17. He could have, and should have, powered up to his state above Vegeta and killed Cell. It wouldn't have to be that much higher, just enough to do the job by being above Vegeta who is above Cell, because historically Vegeta wouldn't be able to cope and would just sit there dumbfounded while Trunks gets the job done. And then he could have vaporized Cell or Android 18, either one solves the problem. But he chooses not to, purely to let Vegeta feel like he's in the big leagues, and only steps it up after Vegeta is out of the way in order to spare his feelings. Although its an anime-only moment, he comes face to face with 18 and instead of annihilating her on the spot, he tells her to run away.
You would think that after the absolute hellscape Trunks grew up in, he would have his eyes on the prize when he finally has the power required to take it. He knows what it's like to be barely surviving, knowing that he or his loved ones can be vaporized at any second. He lived that way for years, and his weakness cost him his best friend and mentor. But he instead allows Vegeta of all people to dictate his actions, even though Vegeta has done nothing but belittle and berate Trunks up to that point, until the introduction scene. Vegeta is guilty as hell for what happened by allowing Cell permission to go absorb 18, but we all expect that of him. Krillin is guilty for not pushing the button, we all know this. But Trunks on the other hand is just as guilty (silence is compliance right??) because he had the power, the drive, and the cause to end all the bad things on BOTH timelines and just threw it away for Vegeta's ungrateful ass, knowing what was on the line. Trunks had seen it all. Bodies in the streets, buildings collapsing, the whole world cowering in fear over an enemy impossible for humanity to overcome, and just goes "nah, daddy's feelings are more important." If Trunks had taken action, Goku would have lived, Gohan and Goten would have had cushy family lives, Krillin would find another girlfriend, and Trunks gets to go back home and tell his mom how he helped save Goku like she wanted. He gets to be a spotless hero.
But nope. Vegeta's feelings mattered more. They never mattered for his entire life, and now that he's at the finish line with every tool necessary to complete his mission, he just throws it away. Disgraceful.
One can argue, "well if Goku lived, the Red Ribbon Army would get out of hand! Goku was right, it's a good thing for him to be gone! It's about the greater good!" But do you really believe that Vegeta would sit there and be okay with another entity trying to take Goku out before he can? Do you honestly believe that? Vegeta would have the Red Ribbon Army in shambles in an afternoon and feel no remorse doing it. Or Goku himself could waltz in and deal with them himself for the disrespect factor. Either way, the Red Ribbon Army absolutely would not be a problem at this point in time. Goku not getting the training in otherworld would be questionable for the Buu saga, but he would also be training Gohan and Goten when they weren't studying, which would in turn make him stronger so I think it's a mixed bag here. He himself would be weaker but everyone else would be stronger with him pushing them.
I don't know, man. I do like Trunks, but I definitely don't think he deserves so much praise. He's cool aesthetically but he's flawed in some major ways in his writing, and gets too much mileage off of his introduction.

@@Averrrrrnuee 🤣 appreciate you
I thought he just got the idea from the Terminator
Growing up the only home media I had of Dragon Ball was the original Funimation DVD of Trunks’ arrival, and you’d better believe I watched that countless times. And I actually really loved his return in Super (aside from a needlessly tragic twist for his world) and you’re absolutely right about his growth in that arc.
Glad you enjoyed the video!
Because as they say, he's got the dawg in him

I always liked future trunks way more than young trunks and it was only later i discovered why that was. Future trunks is nice, young one is like vegeta
@@Cyrath89 The difference of having a father turned on its head 🤣
Trunks is by far my favourite DB character
The creator of DB was inspired by The Terminator, its what i heard before.
@selso101 Heard that too!
Great video! The only thing I can add is a nitpick, that I even hate myself for inserting. I don't think the Androids were stronger in the present timeline, Trunks just never saw them put much effort into a fight before seeing Vegeta take 18 on. Gohan had a similar reaction when fighting the Androids, right before his death, they started to move just a bit more seriously, and he instantly recognised the shift in their moves, leading to him attempting to fly away moments after. We know from the manga that Gohan and Trunks had absolutely zero clue how strong the Androids truly were because right before 17 and 18 kill him, they reveal to Gohan that they've never even used half of their true power against him, and he's shocked.
Ahhh, the dub switched things up again then. With that avi, you should stick around...next few weeks should have stuff up your ally
@@gallenberger1 regardless though man, again, great video. Don't let my nerd comment detract from that compliment, because I mean it.
I've never thought about the fact that the instance where Trunks most acts like his father is right before the reveal of that information, that's a great observation.
@@NimbusTM I didn't take it personally. I appreciate the kind words 👊
i hope u explain the timelines of the show how trunks made changes in the timelines and beerus eliminating zamasu caused another new timeline etc... if u have any data regarding this timelines stuff pls do a video from cell saga to black saga in super... what are all the changes happened in the show with the things Future trunks done in the show...
Fav character in anime and perhaps all fiction. Well done!
Nice taste!
