I may be in the minority here but my favorite Tool album is 10,000 days. It's heavy, it's pure, it's emotional, and it's totally honest. Love it!

Lmao my first few tool albums were Lateralus and 10,000 days and they remain my favourites. I just find them particularly innovative and for me personally, they hold more of a spark than the previous albums (that's purely subjective). I don't think I would've got into Tool if I started with opiate or aenima. ( I am however incredibly fond of undertow. My preferences are a little strange)

It's weird really, I came about them when a character in fan fiction I was reading was blasting parabola in the shower lmao. Thank God for sub par fan fiction, without it I may never have discovered the beauty that is Tool.

100% correct on Lateralus. I have listened to this album literally weekly for 15 plus years and it has not gotten old.

It doesn't does it? I haven't quite listened to it as "religiously" as you. But when I DO sit down n put it on. I certainly never disappointed. Nor do I believe that I've ever skipped a track. Good stuff for sure.
I was still digesting la ta ra lus when 10,000 days was released. No kidding--I was barely ready for it. If I am being honest, I am still on it. 10,000 days hit me off balance and took me a minute to absorb completely. Fear inocullam is blowing me away. I really love this band and understand the hype around them---there music TRULY IS a tool. It can get through anything if you use it and keep an open mind. "Remember--ignorance is the enemy, that's the fight" (M.J.K) So true Mr. Keenan....so true.
When you do ultimately review Fear Inoculum, call back to this video and tell us which section it would go in.

I once thoroughly chewed up and swallowed 2 carolina reaper peppers and a ghost pepper while listening to salivial pushit. Spent a good 20 mins in agony and in darkness enjoying that song and enduring hell.
Now i have taken a lot of drug$, but that was one helluva a trip. Ever since then, that song is my favorite. And I question my existence more than ever.

The salival version of pushit is literally missing most of the content (riffs, grooves) from the original song. And it also sounds like it really is trying hard to sound epic. I will never understand why people prefer it over the original.

Tool are brilliant at making scary soundscapes out of really minor things. Like "Mantra" on Lateralus, which sounds like reverberant whalesong, but is actually just slowed down audio of Maynard annoying his cat.
Disgustipated is another example of a pretty minimalist song that can be pretty terrifying to people.
I am completely convinced that Viginti Tres was created using an old audio mulching program called thOnk_0+2, or possibly some derivative thereof. I've got no proof, but I used to make very similar clustered soundscapes all the time.

To get into Tool, you need to avoid all the opinion, review and silly 'reaction' videos on UA-cam and general comment sections. One of Tool's many messages is 'Think for yourself..". You don't need a stranger to hold your hand and tell you want is good or what isn't.

I like those videos. As a long time fan, it isn’t about trying to figure out what’s happening within a certain song. I just like seeing people enjoying it for the first time. I could agree with what you’re saying if they were used as a primer.
Ppl think Maynard is a god. Then other ppl hear that, listen to radio cuts, and they think the band is pretentious. But, the WHOLE point is that we need to take back our own personal power over our lives, and TOOL want to be a.....tool, to help you find that ability. I know ppl that I'm POSITIVE would like the music who won't try to get in to it because of the fAnDoM

That's how I do all great bands anyway. Listened to eulogy first. Went to opiate next.
When I was 13, my brother bought me Aenima. Bring a simple Green Day fan, it was just too much. He insisted I keep listening and bought me Opiate in hopes that it would be a catalyst into “modern” Tool. When I heard Cold and Ugly for the first time, I was immediately hooked. I bought Undetow which was my catalyst to Aenima and now I’m now an astounding 35 years old and Tool is still my fav band.
What I love about TOOL let me count the ways, Maynard James Keenan's hypnotic voice, the bombastic drums of Danny Carey, the deep melodic basslines mixed with Adam Jones' guitar, the esoteric lyrics and themes and those creepy as hell music videos.

TOOL is the only band that has never disappointed me with a new album. I've liked every new release as much or more than the previous.
I wouldn't say disappointing, but I can't bring myself to keep listening to 10000 days too much. Considering I would wear out every other album. High hopes for the new release though

Literally the most important suite they've released I think, maybe after Parabol/Parabola. Seriously though Reflection has over time become a top contender for my favorite Tool tracks

Reflection is one of the greatest Tool songs ever, and also written following Maynard's mother's death. It was the start of the slow deconstruction of the impermiable enigma.

I think Jambi is one of the most beautiful songs ever composed, its a statement of completely selfless love toward another person, and a willingness to sacrifice anything to stay with them till the end, easily my favourite Tool song.
That song live is a fucking banger. When that breakdown hits, it hits hard. And then right into Adam's talkbox solo. Completely mindblowing.
So I am 41. Tool has been my #1 band since Undertow hit. Saying that, I may be biased because I essentially heard each album as it came out. I feel like in order of release is the best way to do Tool. Opiate, Undertow, AEnima, Lateralus, 10,000 Days. I believe this because you have a chance to hear the evolution of Tool from something raw to something very refined. I believe that it would be very hard to love Opiate (my favorite Tool recording) once you have heard Lateralus. They came so far between those recordings. Just my two cents. As you said, there is no bad Tool, and anything that gets more people hearing them is great.

As far as Salival goes, I don't know if I ever listened to the whole thing, but the live re-imagining of Pushit and the cover of No Quarter are totally with checking out.

New listeners to the genre should wait to listen to Lateralus. Everything else will just sound like a disappointment otherwise
The best thing to do would be to listen to like the two most "popular" tracks from each album. Then afterwards just start from undertow or aenima onward then revisit the older stuff after. For me, undertow is their first real album, and Aenima is their first REAL album. Aside from that, my album ranks are: 1)10,000 days, 2)Lateralus, 3)Aenima, 4)Fear Inoculum.

Taylor Gibson I burned the album to a CD-R when I was first getting into them and the version that I got off Limewire or Kazaa was the Zack live version and that’s been my preferred version ever since

Comparing undertow to other tool albums the criticism that it’s too “simple” is somewhat understandable. However when comparing undertow to other bands “simple” is absolutely absurd.

I very recently bought all of Tool's studio albums, I didn't get _Opiate_ yet. Being into the bass guitar, I took a listen to the band because of how bass focused the band is. Rocked indirectly got me to listen to the band thanks to his Regretting the Past video on Good Charlotte.
Salival is my 2nd or 3rd favorite Tool thing. It's so great! Every song builds so crazily. You Lied might be my favorite, it goes on and on and then Maynard blows the top off!
I remember being in high school in the early 2000s and having to track Salival down track by track on Kazaa because of its rarity and risking my computer getting peer to peer STDs but it was all worth it. “You Lied” was the track I heard first that led me down that rabbit hole and it’s still one of the best things they ever recorded. Not to mention you get to hear what Tool sounds like with two guitarists. I’m also in the camp that prefers the live versions of “Third Eye” and “Pushit” over their studio versions even though those are great too. And “No Quarter” was covered to perfection. I look at that album almost like what would be included in an Aenema deluxe edition.
I feel like Undertow and Aenima are the 2 albums to listen to first. Then start backwards and forwards at the same time.

I’ve got the warm-ish take that 10,000 Days is the best record. I love how it takes the weirdness of Lateralus and the energy of the first two and smashes them together. And it’s so emotional.
I think Lateralus is their apex, both as a statement and as an esperience since it's so mysterious and monolithic, but 10000 Days is a complete masterpiece in songwriting and execution. It's the one i listen to the most too.

It's easier to get into slipknot than it is to tool. I grew up to slipknot and after exploring all metal genre's, tool barely was able to fit into my listening taste buds.

I remember the first time I heard tool was in guitar hero when I was 14 or 15. But I didn't start listening to them till I was around 19. Dont know why I waited so long. I could have been enjoying them much earlier
You have pretty much my same ranking of the studio albums, and it was weirdly enough the order I had listened to them.
The way I got into them was kind of interesting. I had found a PDF of the results of a voting poll for songs to appear in Guitar Hero 3, because I was interested if there was a leak of the soundtrack list. And this PDF had a huge list of bands that people were voting for songs from (basically any popular rock and metal band you could think of), and I made it a mission to listen to them all. Among these names was Tool. And when the creator of the PDF listed his own list of songs he wanted to see in GH3, he listed a BUNCH of Tool songs and said and I quote “If you don’t know Tool, don’t listen to the music you’re listening to.” So I knew I had to get my hands on their music somehow. They weren’t on iTunes and this was before I learned how to torrent. So my drum teacher gave me a copy of Lateralus in hopes that I would try to learn a song or two from it (I didn’t), and from there, I bought the other 3 albums whenever I went CD shopping. I might even keep the tradition going with Fear Inocolum, who knows?

Lateralus and physical graffiti are probably my two favorite albums of all time
I started when 10000 days came out, with this album, and it was a perfect beginning for one simple reason - two starting tracks are heavy, catchy, and have just the perfect combination of tool's unconventional ways and being still pretty grounded to standard paridigms in music.
What happened later is history.

Anyway, I actually needed this when they dropped some of their discography on Spotify because all I knew was the “iconic” bassline of “schism” and that’s that. So this will come in handy when I’ll give the albums a spin next weekend. So thanks Crash, you’re the best when it comes to this and other stuff. 🤘🔥

I just started listening to Tool about a year and a half ago.
-first heard 46 & 2
-Then Schism and Jambi
-And then The Pot and Parabol/Parabola
Then from there I started listening to their albums start to finish.
The first 40 minutes or so of 10,000 days (from the start to the pot) is one of my favorites to listen to all together.

I haven't really appreciated Tool's work until very recently. Yes, I liked a lot of the songs I heard before listening to the albums, but I honestly thought they were overrated. But now, after going back and listening to all of their stuff, I can definitely say they deserve every last bit of praise they've gotten over the years. As for my favorite Tool album, I'd probably go with Aenima (just a hair above Lateralus). The title track and Pushit are two of my absolute favorite songs out of any band (especially the title track omg I fucking love that song) Wow I'm rambling a lot, so I guess I'll end this by saying thank you, Crash, for another absolutely stellar video.
I agree with literally all of this, except swap pushit with Eulogy for me.
I never got into them much until a few years ago. Always had the utmost respect for their musicianship etc but the songs never really appealed to me at the time.
Then I decided to jam the wifes Ænima CD in the car one day and I was totally blown away. You know the moment when you think to yourself "How did I not like this?"

I think there should have been more of a recommendation made for the pot, that got me into Tool heavily and it's still their best song in my opinion. Different and really good!
They tried drugs way more in the early days more so than during Lateralus but they do keep very quiet about those things so there's no way to confirm unless you ask them. More likely to get an answer from Danny imo. He's more talkative. 😁

Good timing (and great video). My personal favourite Tool album is 10 000 Days. I love everything Tool have done, but this one just resonates the most for me.
This is easy. Just go backwards from 10,000 Days. They have gotten better every album, so start with the most mature and go backwards to the more aggressive and vulgar.

@@devinberry8361 Well, that's where you and I disagree. I think 10,000 Days has some of their best work. I'm OGT( sorry, I had to) and have been amazed at the growth in every album. I love all the albums (he's right-there are no bad Tool albums) but so far my favorite overall album is 10,000 Days.

Every Tool album is solid as a diamond. Even Opiate EP (damn good Ep)
I place Aenima above lateralus. However, Aenima is the first album by TOOL I listened to.

Lateralus was the very first song ive heard from Tool. That was a year and a half ago, I am now a gigafan.

Now that we finally are getting a new Tool album... We need System of a Down to release a new album, since they haven't released an album since 2005 (14 years! Almost as long as Tool!)
