No Code is way better than anyone gives it credit for. Binarual also got me into the band. different strokes for different folks. I got to those albums more often than any others.
No Code does get undeserved bad press. I didn’t like it as much as it’s predecessors at the time but I’m a big fan of a few tracks. However others are just plain bad.
Jason Stallings No Code was their first album that I ever owned. Their opening trilogy of albums are, no doubt, amazing; but, No Code was really when they braved out beyond their trademark sound. Sure, it was there in a smattering of songs, from Hail, Hail to Red Mosquito; but, the other songs are undoubtedly good. The album “hangs together” really well. For me, while I love many of the songs, Yield and Bianural are their worst; Riot Act is also super underrated, as it finds them dabbling with other forms of 90s and early 00s rock that had previously been outside of their purview. It wasn’t until their self-titled/avocado album that they “returned to form” from their No Code album.
Definitely agree though I think Binaural is a pretty solid album. It's what got me into the band. and generally the song writing is pretty high quality while I do get some people's mixed feelings on the mix of the album. It works for me but not for some people. Avocado only kinda works for me in the first half. the second half is kinda not that great.
I've listened to Ten, backspacer, Avocado and the rearviewmirror compilation. And I heard No Code was pretty scattershot, but i have to say there is one undeniably masterful moment: "Off he goes". A song about trying to be a better friend, i think from Eddie's point of review. To me it's a song about life reflection, i like playing it on the road on long drives trying to think about my life and how I could live it better, only to find the answers aren't always easy. One of the band's best introspective moments, and very relatable.
During the live performance of Bugs, the guy with the string instrument looks like he is laughing as Eddie Vedder sings. Also, maybe it's just me and the fact that my mom loves Eddie Vedder so much, but every single album cover of theirs is iconic and memorable for me.
I saw the video for "Jeremy" when I was 8 or 9 years old in a "25 Greatest Videos of All Time" countdown. The video's style of editing and visuals gave me nightmares, and after I had heard what the song was about from my parents, the nightmares only got worse. I couldn't listen to that song for years.
I’d say that they’re better than Yield, but definitely not No Code. For me, Yield certainly has a slew of great songs, but the album itself doesn’t hang together very well, imo. No Code, though, is the closest they’ll get to, say, a Sgt Pepper’s or Achtung Baby, I’m being a successful stylistic shift.

Agree with a lot as they’re hands down my favorite band. I differ a bit too on some stuff but that’s to be expected. As far as No Code... Red Mosquito and Hail, Hail are great when live. Probably not there “best” album, but I agree. No Code is a great album and so underrated. I think it deserves more than it gets. Songs like Hail, Hail, Smile, Who You Are, Off he Goes, Lukin, And Present Tense are great songs and I believe no code gets dealt a bad hand. Well not a bad one but not a great one. I love the album but it does have weak spots, but so does every album in the world.

No Code 9. Lightning bolt 8. Backspacer 7. Pearl jam 6. Riot act 5. Binaural 4. Vitalogy 3. Yield 2. Ten 1. Vs.
Good stuff as always man! :D Also, since the first part has Soundgarden references in it, HTGI Soundgarden in the future perhaps? (I already know where Superunknown would be, that album's a gad damn classic in my opinion).
Oh, the old Lightning Bolt review is from the "Crash is trying to be Yahtzee for music" era. That brings back memories. EDIT: And he mentions it himself, too. Yep.
Wish this video was around 6 or 7 years ago when I first dove into Pearl Jam, definitely would've helped. I started going in chronological order and was diggin' each album wanting more and then I got to No Code (and I believe also Yield at the same time) and was turned off from going any further. Like, No Code was so bad that I didn't really give Yield much of a chance and conceded that Pearl Jam's best work was in their beginning and that's all I needed to know. Now I feel like I should try to go back and give their other stuff a listen. Thanks for the great insight (as always).
No Code was really experimental, and Eddie was going through really bad writer's block at the time. Yield was the first album where Eddie let go of the creative reins, and the other members of the band took a greater role in the songwriting process (including writing lyrics, which Eddie had done 100% of up to this point.) The Jack Irons years were... we'll go with "transitional". No fault of Jack's; that's just where the band was at that point. But I do think some strong songs came out of it regardless... "Hail, Hail" off of No Code is a personal favorite, as is "Brain of J" from Yield. In listening to the entire discography back to front, I've learned two things: 1) Ten was a lightning bolt, and cannot -- and SHOULD not -- be recreated, and 2) none of their albums should be compared with any other album they did. They do weird stuff and experiment all the time, moreso as they got older and more confident (and ESPECIALLY after No Code.) So if you go into this looking for the first three albums, or ANY of their albums, you'll be disappointed. Just be open minded. :)
While I do think that Yield is an overall weak album, with a few decent songs on it (e.g., Given To Fly), I love love LOVE No Code, and have always thought that it was horribly underrated. I’ve generally thought that their Bianural album was also fairly weak (again, with a smattering of great songs), but that Riot Act was where they really hit gold again. In it, they dabble in other styles of 90s rock that hadn’t previously been in their purview. Their self-titled/avocado album was where they really played “their sound” again, imo. Their last three, Gigaton included, have all been overall great albums, especially being later in their long career.
Well, until that video comes out I would say the easiest route would be to listen their first 4 albums with couple of the songs from the eps and b sides of that era and then listen everything else
*Must Hears:* OK Computer, In Rainbows, Kid A *Next Steps:* The Bends, Hail to the Thief, A Moon Shaped Pool *Deep Digging:* Amnesiac + B-sides, The King of Limbs, OKNOTOK *Proceed with Caution:* Pablo Honey Might think later on Where some of the stuff from Thom would lad to
Awesome video! Very fair analysis on their discography too. I will say though, I do prefer "No Code" over "Riot Act". "BINAURAL" deserves more love too! Being outsold by Britney Spears the week it came out didn't help matters.
This type of album is what I like to call "The Pinkerton Effect" because it's an album that drastically changed careers for how negatively it was received initially, but in hindsight it's usually not a bad record at all. Other examples of this phenomenon are: One hot minute, pretty odd, warning, adore or machina I depending on who you ask and imho first impressions on earth
...I like "Bugs". I also like the sound collages on Vitalogy. Sure, it's all very uncharacteristic on the surface, but the anger and unease translates excellently all over that record both in the more conventional songs and the unnerving experiments, and I think skipping them loses some of that necessary bitterness even if they do make the album flow a bit strangely.
I remember when Luke made a video about Ten and I said I'd have to do a deeper dive into their discography... still only listened to Ten and Vitalogy at this point, lol. I agree, Vitalogy is really good and worth listening to.
hot take: if you can listen to the brendan o'brien mix of ten I recommend that over the original. the original mix is good, it just has way too much of an echo throughout it. the brendan o'brien mix is way tighter, and much more raw. even flow sounds so much better and the solo on alive is just incredible. the drums in why go sound dirtier, and those are just a few examples. it gives it an even edgier presentation and it sounds way less produced and way more real. I recommend it over the original, plus it has some bonus tracks on it as well I believe.
It's really funny looking back at your old video ''10 Ten Nu Metal Band'' where young Crash mocks who was once present Crash for his hat, and now even older Crash is doing it.
Thank you so much for this, I’ve been searching for an in-depth video about Pearl Jam like this for so long, and couldn’t believe I couldn’t find one. You made a lot of great points -versus is my all-time favorite -and your must listens were on point, but I think “no code” is an absolute must. Also, you missed the boat on sleight-of-hand from binaural. That song is incredible although slow as hell. Keep up the good work!
I really do appreciate you adding Temple of the Dog into this. I got really into Pearl Jam and saw this video not long after, but I had never heard of TotD till watching it. Immediately fell in love with their album after listening and easily one of my favorites of all time. I'm not sure when it would have came across my radar if you hadn't have added it into this vid
Damn Crash, I always knew I liked you. But now you're talking about one of my favorite grunge groups, and pulling out comic book references in the same episode? Hell yeah, man
What I love about Pearl Jam is that they have recorded a lot of, if not most of their live performances. And since the very beginning of the year 2000, they have recorded every single one of their live performances, directly off of their soundboards giving us amazing audio quality. I've seen Pearl Jam live 13 times and I have every single one of the shows that I went to on MP3/CD.
A little correction. You seem to imply that Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament originally played together in Mother Love Bone when in fact they already played together in Green River with Mark Arm and Steve Turner (later replaced by Bruce Fairweather). Mark Arm and Steve Turner later created Mudhoney while Stone, Jeff and Bruce created Mother Love Bone.
Crash saying that Eddie’s the one guy who made “yarling” right. You mention Tantric but don’t mention that Hugo Ferrera did it right? Tantric’s vocals on the first two albums are one of the best parts of them!
My personal ranking of Pearl Jam's albums worst to best!!! 11. No Code(1996) 10. Gigaton(2020) 9. Binaural(2000) 8. Lightning Bolt(2013) 7. BackSpacer(2009) 6. Riot Act(2002) 5. Vitalogy(1994) 4. Pearl Jam(Avocado Album)(2006) 3. Vs(1993) 2. Yield(1998) 1. Ten(1991)
Owned half of their discography in two thrift store trips. Trip #1: Temple of the Dog, Vs. and Vitalogy Trip #2: Yield, Binaural, Lost Dogs, S/T (Avocado).
Hey Crush can you do a prequel on this and talk about pearl jam before pearl jam and talk about mother love bone, malfunkesen( i f@ckin butchered it) and green river

I've noticed Get A Grip on your wall and I was wondering if you could do a HOW TO GET INTO on them. They are one of my all time favorite bands and they have a good discography throughout the years. Cobra Kai He’d most definitely put “Badmotorfinger” and “Superunknown” in his “Must Hear” list. I know I would!!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁
This was a fantastic birthday present. Don't know why but you've released videos on my birthday very often, and I always love them
Oh, the old Lightning Bolt review is from the "Crash is trying to be Yahtzee for music" era. That brings back memories. EDIT: And he mentions it himself, too. Yep.
holy crap i like binge watched their recent-ish concerts (3hours long each) for days now
i absolutely love it, can not recommend it enough
I would also recommend mirror ball from neil young. I mean, its a must
"This is a record that will offend your parents"
Tfw my parents actually bought a copy of this album on vinyl
Just a friendly suggestion not making you do anything :)
How about how to get into radiohead?
Well, until that video comes out I would say the easiest route would be to listen their first 4 albums with couple of the songs from the eps and b sides of that era and then listen everything else
*Must Hears:* OK Computer, In Rainbows, Kid A
*Next Steps:* The Bends, Hail to the Thief, A Moon Shaped Pool
*Deep Digging:* Amnesiac + B-sides, The King of Limbs, OKNOTOK
*Proceed with Caution:* Pablo Honey
Might think later on Where some of the stuff from Thom would lad to
I absolutely love the guitar tone from the No Code and Merkinball albumins.
Best rock critic intro yet
Guess you could say this band jams like a million beautiful pearls?
That metaphor sounded way better in my head.
Awesome video! Very fair analysis on their discography too. I will say though, I do prefer "No Code" over "Riot Act". "BINAURAL" deserves more love too! Being outsold by Britney Spears the week it came out didn't help matters.
So Binaural is the "Into the Unknown" of Pearl Jam?
Video didn't help. They still won't let me into the band.
I love Gordon Rhode's laptop sticker :)
Could you do one on Iron Maiden, Pixies or Smashing Pumpkins
You can laugh at me, but
Silverchair- Frogstomp was a great debut album
I have that one and it is great. Silverchair is much better than what most people said. I would like to buy freak show, rarities, and diorama.
hot take: if you can listen to the brendan o'brien mix of ten I recommend that over the original. the original mix is good, it just has way too much of an echo throughout it. the brendan o'brien mix is way tighter, and much more raw. even flow sounds so much better and the solo on alive is just incredible. the drums in why go sound dirtier, and those are just a few examples. it gives it an even edgier presentation and it sounds way less produced and way more real. I recommend it over the original, plus it has some bonus tracks on it as well I believe.
I agree. I have the deluxe edition. And its amazing.
I know you’ve said you want to, but I’d looooove for you to do HTGI: Iron Maiden
Section-based timestamps:
Must Hears: 1:49
Next Steps: 31:22
Deep Digging: 50:35
Proceed With Caution/Avoid: 1:03:24
My Mother still has the "Ten" album when it came on CD with all her other CD's with every other pearl Jam album minus "Sirens"
Tell the captain this boat is not save, we're drowning. Turns out he's the one making waves. Riot act is my favourite! After that... No code.
Great video Crash! Would love to see a HTGI on AFI
It's really funny looking back at your old video ''10 Ten Nu Metal Band'' where young Crash mocks who was once present Crash for his hat, and now even older Crash is doing it.
I would also like to add the Singles soundtrack alone for State of Love and Trust as well as an entry point for How to get into 90s Grunge.
Keep up the good work!
see now im just even more itching for you to talk about Soundgarden stuff
good video tho fam, PJ is pretty sik
I really do appreciate you adding Temple of the Dog into this. I got really into Pearl Jam and saw this video not long after, but I had never heard of TotD till watching it. Immediately fell in love with their album after listening and easily one of my favorites of all time. I'm not sure when it would have came across my radar if you hadn't have added it into this vid
would you do a how to get into the cure?
Damn Crash, I always knew I liked you. But now you're talking about one of my favorite grunge groups, and pulling out comic book references in the same episode? Hell yeah, man
One of my favorite bands, of any genre.
I bet Crash’s favorite song is Aye D.Va-nita...
No? I’ll see myself out.
I'll admit that was a good joke
Crash saying that Eddie’s the one guy who made “yarling” right. You mention Tantric but don’t mention that Hugo Ferrera did it right? Tantric’s vocals on the first two albums are one of the best parts of them!
My personal ranking of Pearl Jam's albums worst to best!!!
11. No Code(1996)
10. Gigaton(2020)
9. Binaural(2000)
8. Lightning Bolt(2013)
7. BackSpacer(2009)
6. Riot Act(2002)
5. Vitalogy(1994)
4. Pearl Jam(Avocado Album)(2006)
3. Vs(1993)
2. Yield(1998)
1. Ten(1991)
Is it me, or does bugs sound like that weird music in kid icarus when you wake up the reaper?🤔
Crash, that opening was *chef kisses*
You didn't mention "Porch" once and it's the best song on Ten.
Also PJ's Vs was the highest selling rock album in its first week until LB Chocolate Starfish album
another reason to be annoyed with Fred Durst, thanks
i don't think you're smoking enough weed to get the slow stuff. riot act and no code are 2 of there best albums!
Present tense is one of the best songs they've ever done. No Code had some outstanding music on it
I absolutely love No Code and Yield is cool too!
Owned half of their discography in two thrift store trips.
Trip #1: Temple of the Dog, Vs. and Vitalogy
Trip #2: Yield, Binaural, Lost Dogs, S/T (Avocado).
I really appreciate this series. Pearl Jam falls into my category of "bands I want to get into more" so I'm in the target audience for this. Thanks!
Also, Soundgarden was already around when Temple Of The Dog started.
Hey Crush can you do a prequel on this and talk about pearl jam before pearl jam and talk about mother love bone, malfunkesen( i f@ckin butchered it) and green river
Couple years later, Dark Matter is one of their best albums in my opinion!! Scared of Fear is so good, but I love every song on that album🔥
I would love to see a How To Get Into Alexisonfire video, especially since you seem to be the only music critic on UA-cam that’s actually heard their stuff, also I highly recommend that all of you check out Crisis, absolutely killer record 🤘Such a shame that they never crossed over to the states
Bring Back Kim Possible, Animated Obviously I’m an American who loves Alexisonfire and I knew a lot people who were fans. Never realize they were ignored by UA-cam critics and it’s a real shame. And yes Crisis is one of the best Emo/Post Hardcore albums of the 2000s.
Hey Crash. I've been watching for a while now and I haven't really heard your opinions on Aerosmith. I've noticed Get A Grip on your wall and I was wondering if you could do a HOW TO GET INTO on them. They are one of my all time favorite bands and they have a good discography throughout the years. Love they vids and keep on rocking!
To be fair to Riot Act, considering it came out after 9/11 & a majority of people were afraid to be caustic to the government. And I can only imagine what the record company was saying.
VS will always be my favourite.
"God I miss Chris Cornell so much..." 100%
