  • This time we are stoked to search for tarantulas in areas full of snow!
    DOCUMENTED on camera and video for the FIRST TIME EVER. Euathlus species are known to life a harsh life in Chile, so take that into consideration when keeping them back at your place.
    Follow us on our adventure through the country of Chile in search for known and unknown species of tarantula spiders.
    Tarantulas from the genus Euathlus are quite common in this area, but they differ in color every few hundred kilometers.
    The more south we are heading, the more green and lush gets the vegetation. As a trade off, the temperature of course also drop accordingly... so vibrantly green colored forests come hand in hand with chilly temperatures!
    Watch us on how we search for the "Elusive Snow Tarantula" (that's just how we called it during our roadtrip :-) )

    That is Euathlus manicata 👍🏻 specimens in the south zone are green, in the north they are generally more gold-yellow, and in the premountain they are darker :)

      Premountain zone, near to the Andes

      Well just because there is a described species known from Chile, does not mean that everything there is is that species ;-) I will wait for a proper genus revision and then I'll do a "species name calling" for this Euathlus group

    I just subscribed. Been watching a lot of your videos, and they are amazing!
    Sadly we don't have any tarantulas in the wild here in Sweden, but i'd love to go abroad someday to see them in their natural habitats!

      thanks a lot buddy! One day you will find your first tarantula in the wild, look forward to it! cheers :)

    i didn't know tarantulas lived in cold snowy areas. they don't even seem bothered by the cold. cool video

    • @birdspiders

      they certainly do, thanks James! But it's rarely documented, since these habitats are visited in spring/summer for spider research

    Crazy the T walking through the ice. The undefined species was beautiful and hairy maybe for the snow? Bummer with the audio. Hope you get it worked out. Keep the videos coming. Very lucky what you are doing traveling and studying T's in their natural habitats.

      Yeah, looked like the mic input jack was not fully in the camera... what a bummer. But we learn something new everyday while filming, so in the future there should be no more user errors from our side :-) Sure thing, every week there will be a new video coming... actually we are working on a "2 videos a week" plan, to get even more informational content out!

    You really are doing an amazing job for the hobby. Keep it up as always!
    If I may ask, how do you fund expeditions into all these different countries to showcase tarantula habitats? Is it all funded privately or do you get support from local arachnid societies and universities you guys work for?

    • @birdspiders
      @birdspiders  6 років тому +6

      Thank you! Great to read comments like this!
      Yes, all funded privately 100%. I work fulltime and save most of my money to be able to travel to such countries in my free/vacation time. This time I took several months of from work (unpaid) to do a longer trip and finish some research overseas. We do collab with universities and local arachnid societies everytime when it's possible, but there is no money involved at all.

    was waiting for this since you posted the photo on fb!! glad you found those beautiful tarantulas! its interesting that you found many exuvias and hatched eggsac but no big female. is it possible that they move somewhere warmer because of yesterdays snow? like deep burrow or up/inside the trees? are there any record of these behavior perhaps?

    • @birdspiders
      @birdspiders  6 років тому +1

      thats what we were thinking aswell! They do sense such differences for sure... but all in all, we just don't know and can't tell. Also there are no studies regarding these aspects. Tarantula ecology and behaviour is almost completely unstudied

    The reflective mirror patch that Euathlus, Phryxotrichus, Thrixopelma, Grammostola, Chromatopelma, Davus, Bonnetina, Hapalopus, Hapalotremus, Homoeomma, Magnacarina, Plesiopelma, Munduruku, Kochiana, Cyriocosmus, Schizopelma, Bistriopelma, and some Hemirrhagus have is...........pretty interesting lol

  • @aracnoloco

    Cool video, however, why don't you use a tripod for the close-up shots? Have you tried an endoscope camera to inspect the deeper parts of the burrows?

    • @birdspiders
      @birdspiders  6 років тому

      there is no need for endoscope for tarantulas in Chile, as the burrows are normally not that deep, especially for Euathlus which live right underneath the rocks itself. Tripod is not suitable if you want moving shots, not ideal. I had one with me and tried, it's a way different look which I dont like :)

    New subscriber. Great videos. I have a Eusthlus sp. Red, (Homoeomma) sling that I love. Chilean Flame is the common name. Can they survive those conditions also? What are their temp. limits? I live in the Eastern United States.

  • @iandavies7991
    @iandavies7991 4 роки тому

    First thing I thought. This species could probably populate quite nicely in the U.K in some of our natural forests 😆
    Habitat anyway. I guess the switch from Southern to northern hemisphere wouldn't work too well

  • @iandavies7991
    @iandavies7991 4 роки тому

    Do you ever collect specimens for yourself or to send to aracnolagists studying those genus? For example, that undescribed species in this video.

    • @birdspiders
      @birdspiders  4 роки тому

      if the country law allows it or we have permits, then yes of course!

  • @TarantulaswithShanti
    @TarantulaswithShanti 6 років тому +4

    Magnificent! Does this mean that they could survive in the northern hemisphere in places like Canada?

    • @birdspiders
      @birdspiders  6 років тому +3

      It depends, certain parts of Canada do have a harsh winter. They would not survive temperatures like -25 degree celsius. But I always tend to think that these Chilenean species would easily make their way in countries like Switzerland for example

    I wonder if the larger specimens maybe have the body weight to "hibernate" away from the cold weather?

    • @birdspiders
      @birdspiders  5 років тому

      hmmm difficult to say. They for sure slow down their metabolism.

  • @user-c1uyz

    do you ever bring some tarantulas home or is it forbidden to do so??

  • @SuperLoops
    @SuperLoops 4 роки тому

    oh but the poor little shpooters they must be so cold 😭😭 I would bring them inside to warm up and make them some hot cockroach soup or something 😍
    but also seriously I am surprised that spiders in this habitat dont have a deep burrow where they can retreat and shelter from frost and low temperatures

  • @bugsnstuff

    Good stuff. Male moults maybe?

    • @birdspiders
      @birdspiders  6 років тому +1

      Thanks mate! Actually no, all molts were females - we could tell by the spermathecae. Also some had eggsacks lately as they were laying in the same retreat.... really strange! Makes us believing the whole genus is not very stationary at all, happened to us on several occasions here in Chile

    • @bugsnstuff
      @bugsnstuff 6 років тому +3

      Yep, we're discovering that many species are nomadic in nature, holding up to either moult or lay eggs and then moving on.

    • @birdspiders
      @birdspiders  6 років тому +2

      good we are not the only ones observing that. But still not really much published about this behaviour. Interesting topic for sure! Many questions still unanswered

    This is very interesting. Isn't Chile like super duper hot in the summer?? That would mean they go from one extreme to another. You wouldn't think God would pack all of that hardiness into such a small beautiful creature. If the adult female looks any prettier than the ones you've shown, they would be something to see. I sure hope you find some. Tyfs God bless you

    • @birdspiders
      @birdspiders  6 років тому +1

      They sure have hot days in summer here for sure, so quite a big range in temperature compared to tropical species. Thank you!
