    Here in England it is really cold, but I keep the room where myself and my two spiders reside at 75 degrees farenheight. This has kept them and me for a number of years.

    Hi and thanks for your video. I live in central Arizona at about 3800ft elevation. Winter's here are mild with overnight lows at 18F and day temps currently in the 50's, pushing 60. I was landscaping yesterday and when I moved a large boulder that was half submerged in the earth, to my surprise, a beautiful tarantula started creeping out from beneath! It was moving extremely slowly so I brought it out because there was no putting the boulder back due to the ground having been already disturbed. I put it in a medium sized box and closed the lid to moderate the temperature and kept it in my enclosed truck bed in the garage overnight thinking it would be well above freezing and maybe somewhat close to what the temp that the ground below the boulder would have been. I was relieved to find it alive this morning because I didn't know if it had been somewhat squished during the boulder moving.
    .....So, Now what? Where is the best place to put this beautiful creature for the rest of the Winter? I'm assuming it was hibernating? The area is not desert, but rather in a treed zone along a creek so there are plenty of downed somewhat decomposing logs and leaves about. Would it fair ok in a cavity below one of the larger ones? And, would it be able to dig its way out later or does there need to be a tunnel out as well? Also, does it need anything right NOW like food and water? It's only been a day.

    I got hit by a storm this year about a month ago and my power went out for 2 and a half days. I actually had to end up sleeping with my tarantulas in the bed. In their enclosures of course. I’m lucky I’m only an owner of two which made this possible to do by regulating my body heat to them which helped them survive.

    Oh Patricia! I’m sorry to hear you were struck down for a second time with Covid. One could say you are over achieving in the wrong direction. Hope you get back in the game soon. Great video too. Feel better see you in a week. You know if you need a rest we understand. We would rather miss you for a short time. Than to not have you about for a long time. Hugs.

    So sorry to hear your not well. Thought you got the vaccine and boosters etc?? Anyway, great advice. Here's a massive tip. When you put the heating on in winter it reduces the humidity. Spray down a lot..

    My internalized sexism is showing here: I literally never clicked on a video before (from the email list) because I just assumed it would be a man talking. The relief and gladness I felt when I clicked this and saw it was another gal in the hobby! We need more women's voices in creepy crawly circles. Insta subscribe.

    I was told to use a heat mat, but to put it on the back of the enclosure, I'm still unsure tho,bcoz of the horror stories I've also heard. x

      I think it's right to be careful with the heat mats bc a lot can go wrong. You want to make sure they can't get too hot or too close to the spider.

    At one point this winter here in the Chicagoland area the temps dipped to below zero and my apartment was under 55 degrees, so I put one T in the closet and the other I wrapped a blanket around half his enclosure. But my question is....the UA-cam tarantula experts from the UK suggest using only top soil as a substrate. Well we did that when we rehoused my curly hair a few months ago, but not sure if it was the temperature here but the topsoil now has big gaps and cracks and even around the sides has sunk in leaving gaps. Would you suggest a mixture of top soil and coconut fiber?..... Or something else? It looks like Spidey has good ground there.

    • @TarantulaHeaven
      @TarantulaHeaven  Рік тому +1

      Wow I am so glad you were able to think fast and save your Ts (and yourself lol). I actually only use Zoo Med loose coconut fibre for Spidey and she LOVES it. My little sling Blinky tended to like it, too - when I tried to mix other substrates in it they didn't want to burrow as much. And that spider LOVED to burrow lol

      @@TarantulaHeaven ha! Yes luckily I was able to throw a blanket on and walk around the apartment like Darth Vader, too bad we can't slip sweaters in our tarantulas. =) Thanks for the zoo med idea!

    I'm living in a place where the weather is 15°c to 20°c all year round, i'm getting a Chaco Golden Knee Tarantula, should I get a heather pad to put under my tarantula tank ?

    • @TarantulaHeaven

      Hmmm I would say that you probably want to use some heating source but it doesn't have to be a heating pad as sometimes that is risky. If your home is at least warm or you are comfortable, that should be good enough. If your home is cold, you can try to use a room heater to heat just the room it's in. I think indirect heat is the safest.
